Re: [RBW] Re: New Bike Day - Lavendar Saluki!

2014-03-22 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks everyone! I'll definitely give the color a thorough trial period
never fear... And even then I may have an opportunity to straight trade
with an identical but different color Saluki as an option.

Hey Michael I'm sure you'll get to see it soon. I'll set up a ride for
April if I can nail down a good day for it!

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day - Lavendar Saluki!

2014-03-22 Thread David Spranger
That is one standout bike. I bought a Rambouillet from a list member a few
years back. Though the color was described as a dark purple/blue, to my
eyes and on my monitor the color looked navy. When I unpacked the bike, in
person the color is very purple and not blue at all. I have always liked
purple as a pleasing color, but never saw myself owning a purple bike. I
get more compliments on the color of this bike than all my other bikes
combined. Five or so years later, the bike needs a repaint and the only
paint scheme I am considering is the same purple with creme details it has
now:

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2014-03-22 Thread James P
I went for a Thule Helium (hanging rack) to fit my Outback. It's selling
points were that it is light, and easy to put on and remove.

It works very well for "standard" frames (i.e. regular top-tubes), but it
needs an adapter bar for curved or "dropped" top-tubes, which is a pain.

If I was going to do it again - I'd seriously consider going with the Kuat
platform rack. Silly expensive, but a little less so when you wait for
those "XX% off" sales at the bigger box bike stores - just make sure you
check the "exclusions".

I found a great site with videos that show how different racks look/fit on
various cars - it is
here: http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Bike-Racks/Kuat/N101-103.html - I hope
that helps...

That color rocks. Calls just enough attention to itself.

Of course, it will look perfect with a bit of road and trail dust on it.

enjoy!

2014-03-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
Purple, gold, and black are classic. I'd wrap the handlebars in a brilliant
yellow, golden shellac, with the same for chain guard. If you fender it,
golden wood fenders. With a tan saddlebag ... wow. But then it's not mine
and whatever you do will be fantastic too.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Increasing chainstay clearance to run wider tires

2014-03-22 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
When RBW started making 650B/584 frames there really weren't that many
tires to choose from - and Col de Vie's were on the wider end of things.
It's been wonderful to see the profusion of tires now supported, but it
does make the early 650B/584 spacing seem limiting. But, then, there was a
time when 700C/622 tires larger than 25 mm seemed "big"...

I know some folks who have crimped their own chainstays. It's mentally a
bit overwhelming to consider, and you want to proceed carefully, with a way
to confirm rear triangle and dropout alignment. But, it's not sensei-level
work.

Peter's point about checking for clearances at all angles is important.
You don't want to crimp and then discover it's not the true limiting
factor.

Done right, it should not weaken things. It's one of the reasons steel is
a superb material.

Ride buddy JimG worked his way through this - well documented as usual.
Here's a little of his investigation process:

http://sfcyclotouring.blogspot.com/2007/07/denting-chainstays-for-tire-clearance.html

Any competent frame builder or a shop that does frame alignment on steel
frames should be able to do this if you don't want the project yourself.

hope that helps,

2014-03-22 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Patrick I love the golden yellow suggestion for the bar tape!

I did a 30miler this morning out on the C&O Canal Towpath, I figured a new bike
deserved some new to me miles as well and the bike performed brilliantly. I
left the CdlV 32's on it for today's ride but will swap out to the Hetres
tomorrow. The top tube length and the over all stability are the two most
stand out characteristics so far. I think I've been riding with 7-10cm more
reach than I should have because the saluki us so much more comfortable with
the noodles than I've experienced on my trek. I'll do some sort of measurement
comparison on the blog sometime soon.

Tomorrow I'm planning for a slightly shorter morning ride with Erl, go to get
out and enjoy the great weather!!!

Thanks for all the comments!!

Cool bikes! I'm a big fan of the Big Apples, and found them happily fast, with
the Liteskin version on the rear. The Big Apples wouldn't go tubeless on my

build another bike).

I know what you mean about motoring along. It's very satisfying to get in the
groove on a big bike with fat tires. And the fact that your friends think
they're a DISadvantage is also fun...

I don't know if the bead affects performance, my suspicions would be that
it doesn't, but I don't like wire beads because I find them harder to get
onto a rim and I find them harder to pack for a spare. On longer rides and
tours I often bring a spare tire and tube...wire beaded tires just don't
work for that.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-22 Thread jimmy johnsen
Maybe we should ask Graham Obree about tires. At 50 years young isn't he still
trying to break land speed records?Have you ever tried folding a wire bead? It
can be done but it's easy to bend/crimp the wire. Can't see how that would sit
straight after it's been crimped. On the other hand tubulars are cemented to a
rim creating a solid bond! Track riders also solder their spokes together
creating a very stiff wheel. They are high maintenance but are making a come
back. Try changing a tubular in 15 degree weather. It's a bitch. Folding tires
come closer to tubulars without the work involved. If your a pro and have
someone changing tires for you it's a no brainer. But the market is driven by
amateurs so folding bead rules.

[RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-22 Thread Jim
To join in Peter M' s point, Rivendell bikes (particularly the Atlantis)
have excellent resale, at least in the US. So if you decide to sell the
bike later (unlikely) you most likely will get a good part of your
investment back without much difficulty. I think what is at risk is $500 to
$700 and not $4000.

Back in the day, that's all we had; and there definitely is a way to

Well it was a very nice ride that meandered through Walnut Creek and
Lafayette on street, MUP, and dirt. Liesl's new bike is awesome. The ride
included a couple of gates to climb over, one re-routing because of too
much poison oak, a side trip to Grant's childhood home, and a glimpse of
the new proto-Hunqapillar. Weather was about 70 degrees. I ran out of
camera memory at the turnaround but here are some snaps:

Hi,

The bike listed for sale is mine. I posted it while trying to figure out
what I was going to do with it. The frame is to small for me as you can
probably tell from the amount of seat post showing. I have actually
decided to tear the bike down and use the parts on a Chevoit I am eagerly
awaiting the arrival of. The frame will be up for sale shortly if anyone
is interested I am looking to get 900$ for it plus shipping but if you are
local pick up is no problemo. Frame is a 52cm and is pretty much in like
new condition other than normal assembly marks. Message me off list if
interested, also if you are curious about condition and local we can set a
time up for you to check the frame out in person.

Thanks,
Richard

Re: [RBW] Re: New Bike Day - Lavendar Saluki!

2014-03-22 Thread Tony DeFilippo
http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/03/new-bike-new-ride.html

- Ride report and pics from this morning's ride. Tonight I mounted the EL
Hetres from my 650B Trek, I took the opportunity to 'rotate' the rear tire
forward and hopefully extend the life of the pair. Can't wait to check out
the ride tomorrow. I also have new-to-me Nifty Swifty 32.8mm(~) tires now
on the Trek, I'm hoping they help with the wicked shimmy I have, for now
they make the massive hetre sized fenders look ridiculous though!

Kevin - were you on the 2TT Sam I saw? There was a slug of #FMCC folks
that came through just as I broke off from the VASA ride at Fletchers. I
hope you had a great ride in any case!

Minh - what direction would you go w/ the tape/housing... I've been holding
colors up to the bike this evening thinking it through. Patricks 'golden
yellow' suggestion is an excellent one, I'm intrigued a bit by going dark
blue w/ the 'bits of flare', and also green might be nice.

[RBW] Re: Nanoreview, Barlow Pass 700x38C on Dyad

2014-03-22 Thread Rod Holland
Took my first ride on the 700cx38mm Barlow Pass Extra Light tires today, a
little 14-mile shakedown. They remind me, a lot, of the GB Cypres EL tires
I ran last year, especially the way they roll fast and beg for
acceleration. But the extra air volume is noticeable, and I was able to run
them at somewhat lower pressure. Happy!

At the end of this first ride, the tires measured 36.27 mm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Chica Warrior Ride. Tomorrow! (3/22)

2014-03-22 Thread James Warren

And of course, I don't mean bad-cheap.

The bike rides dreamy. It is certainly Hunq-inspired with Appaloosa influences
as well, but it seemed more Hunq to me. Since it's still a prototype, it's hard
to tell what the precise final form will be. For now, it's a great-riding bike
and suggests a future cool model.
I wouldn't know what kind of price it would have. That part was joking.
