Och! I'm sorry, Doug.Thank you, for the great details!

I'll write Surly and WI and ask what chains work with their stuff and
report back.

How is the SX3 working for you? How much use, on what type of roads/trails?

The SRAM 8 sp. chain works okay.
I recall, somewhere on the interwebs, a blogger saying they used 1/8th
inch chain with the Dingle, I *seriously* doubt that would work.
I stuck with the 9sp chain. No worries.
Pulled the WI freewheel and replaced with an ACS not Dicta freewheel.
Longevity? You can buy a lot of ACS freewheels for the price of the WI
 ones.
 And it hardly got used!

To me it feels easier to push a higher gear fixed.
And use the freewheel side for the rough stuff or the spent ride
 out/home!
In my experience the nine speed chain Surly suggests does not play well
 with the WI freewheels.
For a bike that was doing roughly what you propose, the setup I finally
landed on was 42/40 in front and 17/19t dingle with a Dicta(?) 20t
freewheel on the flip A gear to get there, a couple of choices to ride
there, and a gear to drag my tired carcass home.
Yup, I walked up some hills but this spread worked for me.
Now the bike sports a Sturmey S3X.
I concur with Phillip, as I got stronger the free side went untouched
 for years!
Don't forget to factor dropout length in your tooth calculations..

Fascinating stuff. When I zoom in I can see kinds of interesting thing.
One is a popular craft brewery in a Western Chicago suburb and the route
that cyclists took to get there is the exact same route that I've taken
many times. But I have a question: I've search all over the Strava web
site and I can't find any info on the colors, which are either red or blue
(after you click on cyclists only). Is the blue just a less densely
traveled route and the red a more heavily traveled one?

Pretty fascinating the time and energy the company puts into what is

This is probably based on some degree of due concern that their employers
could see the data, and use it punitively.

[RBW] Attractive front derailers

I need to buy a front derailer for my build that's going on. I was willing
to do an ugly derailer in the back because it was already on hand. I'll
switch it out later as budget allows. However, if I'm going to buy the
front, I would prefer that it was attractive.

The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go along
with front derailers. Top pull, bottom pull, dual pull, top swing, bottom
swing, traditional, etc, etc.

So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are
not available in 28.6, only 31.8. Is this workable with a shim?

good enough for me. 28.6 fronts have joined the Dodo bird pretty much.
Shimano supplies shims that will usually make the big ones fit on small
tubes. Hate the shims.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations

2014-05-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
No, I'll be trying the noodles that come with it and see how I like them
for the type of riding I do, and if not going with Albastache. It's a 66
cm, so the fit is nearly identical on paper to my Hunqapillar, with
identical stand over height and TT length, so I've got a good reference for
how it will fit already. I'll just have a bit less seat post showing
because of the 2˚ upslope vs. 6˚ on the Hunqapillar.

Re: [RBW] Attractive front derailers

2014-05-01 Thread Dan McNamara
The Shimano 443 is a nice front der that is available in 28.6. All silver.
Shifts well on a Riv-type triple.

It is a non-group piece so it falls thru the cracks. Mike at Black Mountain
Cycles usually has them.

The CX-70 is decent looking if you are using a double.

The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go along

So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are
not available in 28.6, only 31.8. Is this workable with a shim?

I came across a set of used 700x35 pasela speedblends at a friend's shop
the other day; after a very short conversation about them they were gifted
to me and ended up in my basket.

I've become my special event tires. Birthday parties, big social overnight
camping trips, ALL OF PEDALPALOOZA, etc.

They actually match Hilsen Pearl Blue really well. And they're original
pasela comfy and wide too.

I just put a Suntour Cyclone FD on my Riv, simple and classic.

But, I had to make the switch from the IRD Alpina FD when I put on the
Stronglight 99 crank. The Stronglight crankarm is so close to the big ring
that a FD with a flat outer plate is required, no modern sculpting.

Shifts the Stronglight triple 52/40/30 just fine, via Silver bar-ends.

[RBW] in praise of the chambray shirt

2014-05-01 Thread Matthew Snyder
I almost never buy expensive clothes. Spending $82 on a shirt is
generally way out of my price range, and thankfully my job allows me to
wear whatever I want. But I took a chance on the black-gray chambray shirt
Rivendell sells, because it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for
in terms of style and material. I'm a tall slender guy but I don't like
large clothes, because often as clothes get taller, they get wider too, and
I prefer a slim silhouette on my shirts. I was on the fence about ordering
a large or a medium, but I flipped a coin and went for the large.

Initially I was disappointed because the shirt was too wide or billowy on
me, and I almost returned it. But I decided to throw it in the wash
instead, and now, after a few washes and wears, it's shrunk down to
basically a perfect fit. It lost some of its length, but the shrinking in
the profile was more significant. The material is the right weight for
this Seattle spring weather, and the slightly extended shirt tail makes it
a good riding shirt. I don't have many shirts that are good for the awkward
situations that arise if I'm biking to a place where I have to look
presentable but I can't easily change my clothes when I get there. This
shirt fills that niche quite well.

Was it worth $82? I don't own enough $82 shirts to compare it to, so
it's hard to say. But I'm very happy with it and would probably buy
another one if this one were lost.

 https://imgur.com/a/InORH

o Phil Wood Fixed/SS Wheelset: Phil Wood high flange 36H (Front Rear)
track hubs with 120mm rear hub that is flip/flop with fixed and freewheel
threadings. Built in 2010 by a local wheelbuilder. Mavic A719 rims and DT
 Swiss spokes. Asking $180 + $25 s/h per wheel = [$230].

o Nitto Lugged Seatpost: Bought in 2011 and has some “wear” on finish.
 [$140]

o Berthoud Men’s ‘Aspin’ Saddle: Bought in July 2013 and ridden about
500 miles. Conservatively treated with Obenauf’s and protected from
rain/sweat with a cover. This particular saddle has been a little unusual
with how the grain color has changed unevenly, but the saddle is in good
 shape. [$130]

o Paul ‘Flatbed’ front basket with stem clamp extension. This rack is
in good condition and includes the extra stem clamp which was long enough
 for my 64cm Sam. [$85]

o SKF 113mm Bottom Bracket: Bought from Compass in November and only
used about 500 mi. because I ordered the wrong spindle length. The red cup
has some chipping from multiple installs, but the BB works like new. Can
 include 2.5mm spacer. [$100 shipped]

o New Schwalbe 700X35Marathon Supreme tires: Bought as extra but
changed tire allegiance, $60 each shipped or $110 for both shipped.

o Sackville Tweed Trunksack: Bought in 2012 and used for a year, in
 pretty nice shape. [$70]

o Sackville Saddlesack Medium: I have lost the 2 saddle and 1 seatpost
leather straps and the main compartment closure straps got ripped off after
getting caught in my spokes. Contacted Grant and he said the bag could be
sent to the CT factory for repair, but I don’t want to deal with that. I
used zipties for the attachment points and found the bag more stable, and
one could improvise or repair the main straps. The finish could use a bit
of wax in places, which I’d be happy to apply for the buyer. Asking $80
 shipped.

 o Grid-Gray Shopsack, small: [$15 shipped]

o VP-001 or ‘Thin Gripster’ pedals in black: Bought a few months ago
 and used sparingly. [$45 shipped]

o Nitto Moustache Bar: Mounted on my QB since 2009 and never ever
crashed. Only marks are from sliding brake levers off. Will also throw in
my other scraped up moustache bar for free (with ½ tape still on) if you’d
 like. [$48 shipped]

o Shimano XT Rear Derailer: Used lots and only replaced because I
wanted a shiny new one. Works just fine. [$25]

o Campagnalo “Mirage” Front Derailer: Bought from Riv, also works
 really well. [$20]

o Cygolite Expillion Headlights: One is from 2013 [$30] and has a
fresher battery, the other is from 2012 [$25].

o Cygolite MityCross Headlight w/ battery pack: Very bright (if bulky)
headlight that was used sparingly and works well. [$15].

o New Cateye Strada Wireless Computer. [$35]

 o VO Threadless Stem w/ 25.4mm clamp, 17º rise, 120mm: [$15]

o Pletscher TwinLegger Kickstand in black: Used a bunch and should last
 forever [$20]

o New Pletscher “rat trap” front/rear rack in black: [$20]

o New Adidas Samba shoes in black, men’s 13: Bought in 2012 and never
 bothered to return, NOS. [$30]

 o HATCHETS: I was into homesteading/farming for a while and bought a
bunch of Grandsfors Bruks axes without really having a use for them. They
were bought in 2011 and hardly ever used. Developed some surface rust in
 storage that I’ve cleaned off.

It's a colorway people. It's not trademarked by Riv or anyone as far as I

could contest the issue). As previously stated it appears to be an
inspiration point for a company trying to push cycling as a lifestyle

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Saddle Bag Grip R50

2014-05-01 Thread Jason Ferrier
I was planning to make my own, but came to the realization that I want to
use my saddle bag sooner than I'll actually motivate to get to the hardware
store and make one.

I don't need the quick release if you want to keep it and save me some cash.

I'm in Oakland, CA and will just pick up a new one from Riv next week if
nobody has a used one.

Thanks.
Jason

[RBW] Re: Attractive front derailers

2014-05-01 Thread Dennis Hogan
Hi Jim

I contacted Mark at Riv regarding upgrading the crankset on my Homer to a
Sugino triple and he recommended a Shimano Claris FD-2403-B front derailer.
They stock them for builds at Riv World Headquarters but don't have them in
the catalog. It is not totally silver - the clamp is gray (lighter to my
eye than in the attached pic). I believe it was only $27.00 and Mark spoke
highly of them.

http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/nl/index/components/road/claris/product.-code-FD-2403-B.-type-.fd_road.html

It was easy to install especially after a call to Mark who refreshed my
memory as to the correct procedure - something to do with not running the
chain before adjusting the hi-lo screws Duh! LOL

Regards Dennis in PDX

the front, I would prefer that it was attractive.

The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go
along with front derailers. Top pull, bottom pull, dual pull, top swing,
 bottom swing, traditional, etc, etc.

So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are
not available in 28.6, only 31.8. Is this workable with a shim?

length. 38x16 is my high gear and 35x19 is my low gear. A flashy
highlight is another harlequin wrap job.

brakes! I'm going to have this up for sale at the Harding Elementary
School fundraiser this Saturday for $600. If it doesn't sell, I'll keep it
 for myself. It's a 22 (56cm) frame, with a 75.5cm Saddle Height in the
photo. I took a page out of Pudge's book in that I bought the bike for
$400, did the overhaul, added about $400 worth of parts and am selling it
for $600. Fiscal responsibility isn't my strong suit.

 None.

That is right. No bike issues, with frame (Atlantis), racks (Nitto front

(Ortlieb), wheels (40 spoke w/Phil Wood hubs), or tires (Schwalbe Marathon).

I have gone about 2,200 miles from Key West, FL to Oklahoma City, OK, and
apart from putting some lube on the chain after it rained and adding air to

By purely random chance, the bike also visited what must be a Rivendell

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations

2014-05-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
After email Grant and talking with Mark and Kevin at Rivendell today I've
decided on a more conservative approach to fixed gear:

-- Get used to the bike and its pedal clearance with SS.
-- Try fixed after a while, once I know pedal clearance will work where I'm
riding.

Basic message from both of them is: The QB is designed as a SS bike, not a
fixed. If it was designed as a fixed, especially for rougher terrain, it
would have bigger tires and higher BB to prevent pedal crashes in turns and
on rocks/roots, etc.

While I'm curious to test how fixed and vertigo get along, I want to do so
as safely as possible. This seems the prudent way to accomplish this.

With abandon,

Interesting idea, especially considering the abandoned cog is an 11 or 12.
That's an idea worth looking into. OTOH, if the cassette is not the
aforementioned oddball design (would Shimano do such a thing?) there's
plenty of nicely spaced wide range 7 speeds with usable tooth counts.
You've got choices.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations

2014-05-01 Thread Patrick Moore
That sounds a very reasonable approach to me, given the QB's lower bb. Note
that if you decide you like fixed off road, nice mtbs from the immediately
pre suspension era are still relatively available and cheap, and with an
ENO hub'd wheel and some 60 mm tires, you'd be all set. One of the nicest
handling (of its kind, of course) bikes that I've owned is that very early
'90s Diamond Back Axis Team that I blather on about so much, converted to
fixed with Eno hub and sporting 60 mm Big Apples, a 64 gear, and Noodles.

Tho' I have to admit that while I love ss off road, I hated fixed off road.

As for gearing, you may well find that you develop a penchant for gears
higher than you now anticipate. I know I'd rather stand, or walk, than
twiddle futilely and despairingly in too low a gear on the flats.

[RBW] Re: 7 speed cassette question

2014-05-01 Thread Zack
So I have some stuff going on that makes working on the bike less of an
option, took it into local shop that helped me out by grinding down the
spacer on the first swap.

First experience was awesome, dude was chill and helped.

This time:

Me: I want to swap this cassette out for a 7 speed...

Bike Shop Guy: Why do you want to do that?

Me: I have had continuous problems with friction shifting the 8

Bike Shop Guy: The spacing is the same on 7 speed and 8 speed cassettes,
so it's going to be exactly the same.

Me: No, it actually isn't the same. I have researched it and decided to
do this.

Bike Shop Guy: Well, it's the same, but I can still help you.

Solid.

Regarding the Young: the clamp diameter as I measure it is 25.4 mm. The

The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go

I have one of the extra large that was on closeout and I love it. Because
it is a wide fit, I, too, was a little concerned by the sizing (though I
knew I needed a Large, was just swayed by the cost). What I've found is
that the generous fit lets it act like a nice overshirt to dress up a
hoodie, or by itself it's a nice light jacket. Not high on my priority, but
sometimes I imagine picking up another in Large.
One button broke this week, and that's after only two or three washes, so
I'll be a little more delicate with the dryer, etc. in the future, but the
fact is that it lends itself easily to the fun mending aesthetic Patrick
uses. (Notable exception follows: I have a four-year-old daughter, and for
her enjoyment, I would not disallow rainbows nor unicorns.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations

2014-05-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
I've been riding various short rides and their hills in poser ss mode
that are shorter than many of the hills I ride on trails (that are still
snow locked, so inaccessible), so they are a good analog for at least
benchmarking where I am at the moment. My test gear is 46.8 (36-21) and
I'm climbing them but barely (that no doubt will improve as I strengthen
and learn). They're about as steep but shorter as the trails I ride.
Sheldon recommends 35 inches for mountain biking SS, so I'm also using that
as a benchmark, but my initial gearing will be:

32/40 front
17, 20/22 rear

That's a low of 39.7 and a high of 64.3. That should give me a lot of
options for learning on this highly varied terrain around here, but I'm
always open to suggestions. When I get stronger I can always reassess. But
the reality also is you can only go so fast on the stuff I ride due to its
technical nature, especially with 40mm tires.

With abandon,
Patrick

On Thursday, May 1, 2014 5:56:01 PM UTC-6, Patrick Moore wrote:

That sounds a very reasonable approach to me, given the QB's lower bb.
Note that if you decide you like fixed off road, nice mtbs from the
immediately pre suspension era are still relatively available and cheap,
and with an ENO hub'd wheel and some 60 mm tires, you'd be all set. One of
the nicest handling (of its kind, of course) bikes that I've owned is that
very early '90s Diamond Back Axis Team that I blather on about so much,
converted to fixed with Eno hub and sporting 60 mm Big Apples, a 64 gear,
 and Noodles.

Tho' I have to admit that while I love ss off road, I hated fixed off road.

As for gearing, you may well find that you develop a penchant for gears
higher than you now anticipate. I know I'd rather stand, or walk, than
twiddle futilely and despairingly in too low a gear on the flats.

On Thu, May 1, 2014 at 5:37 PM, Deacon Patrick lamon...@mac.comjavascript:

After email Grant and talking with Mark and Kevin at Rivendell today I've

-- Get used to the bike and its pedal clearance with SS.
-- Try fixed after a while, once I know pedal clearance will work where
 I'm riding.

Basic message from both of them is: The QB is designed as a SS bike, not
a fixed. If it was designed as a fixed, especially for rougher terrain, it
would have bigger tires and higher BB to prevent pedal crashes in turns and
 on rocks/roots, etc.

While I'm curious to test how fixed and vertigo get along, I want to do
so as safely as possible. This seems the prudent way to accomplish this.

For comparison, my low gear on my Hunqapillar is 19.5, though I now have

The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go

So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are
not available in 28.6, only 31.8. Is this workable with a shim?

Hi all,

Sorry for being late in responding to some of your emails, it's been quite
a flurry of sales. I can say for certain that the Saddlesack, Thin
Gripsters, Shopsack, Tweed Trunksack and GB Felling Axe are all sold. I am
awaiting responses on many other items and will post an updated PDF of what
remains tomorrow.

I would also like to add two additional items into the mix, which could be
someone's badass Dynamo system:

1) 36H Schmidt SON Classic dynamo hub (hub only). Ridden about 15,000 miles
and still in perfect working order. It is covered under warranty with Peter
White until November 2014. Will clean, polish and post a picture tomorrow.
Asking $120 shipped.
2) Schmidt Edelux headlight. Purchased along with the hub in 2009 and in
very good condition, with just some surface wear. Will polish and post a
picture tomorrow too. Also includes RM handlebar mount, asking $100
shipped.
OR get both of these for $210 shipped.

o Phil Wood Fixed/SS Wheelset: Phil Wood high flange 36H (Front

freewheel threadings. Built in 2010 by a local wheelbuilder. Mavic A719
 rims and DT Swiss spokes.

 o VO Threadless Stem w/ 25.4mm clamp, 17º rise, 120mm: [$15]

o Pletscher TwinLegger Kickstand in black: Used a bunch and should
 last forever [$20]

o New Pletscher “rat trap” front/rear rack in black: [$20]

o New Adidas Samba shoes in black, men’s 13: Bought in 2012 and never
 bothered to return, NOS. [$30]

 o HATCHETS: I was into homesteading/farming for a while and bought a
bunch of Grandsfors Bruks axes without really having a use for them. They
were bought in 2011 and hardly ever used. Developed some surface rust in
 storage that I’ve cleaned off.

 1) Grandsfors Bruks Small Forest axe: 19” handle, see pictures and a

[RBW] Long shot: WTT DA 7400 7 sp shifters for 8

I just came into a nice 7400 crank to replace the ultra compact TA, and I'd
like to run, and index, 8 instead of 7 cogs to regain some of the range lost by
going to considerably larger cogs (say 17-28 with the 53/39 vs 13-23 for the
44/30). The gaps in back diminish as the cogs get bigger.

Don't worry, I know what I am doing.

Poss may have a 7400 fd or rd to swap, too.

OR, could use a set of Retrofrictions and simply abandon the indexing.

Thanks.

leather straps and the main compartment closure straps got ripped off after
getting caught in my spokes.

 1) Grandsfors Bruks Small Forest axe: 19” handle, see pictures and a
 description here [$70]:

 2) Grandsfors Bruks American Felling Axe [$70]: 31” handle,

Absolutely. Wonderful.

Seth's A.H.H., which I tweaked for, er, emergency purposes. :)

And I meant it when I said thanks for the ride reports. I couldn't imagine
riding a bike post-death, and when I could two months later, it was a
relief. But your ride reports created an itch so bad I had to absolutely
scratch it, fears and grief be darned. My morning coffee rides are really a
 thing of joy.

Anyway, thank you again and keep writing those ride reports. I'll keep
