Fascinating stuff. When I zoom in I can see kinds of interesting thing. One is a popular craft brewery in a Western Chicago suburb and the route that cyclists took to get there is the exact same route that I've taken many times. But I have a question: I've search all over the Strava web site and I can't find any info on the colors, which are either red or blue (after you click on cyclists only). Is the blue just a less densely traveled route and the red a more heavily traveled one? On Wednesday, April 30, 2014 11:06:01 PM UTC-5, cyclot...@gmail.com wrote: You have the basic idea. The Shimano 443 is a nice front der that is available in 28.6. All silver. Shifts well on a Riv-type triple. It is a non-group piece so it falls thru the cracks. Mike at Black Mountain Cycles usually has them. The CX-70 is decent looking if you are using a double. I was willing to do an ugly derailer in the back because it was already on hand. I'll switch it out later as budget allows. However, if I'm going to buy the front, I would prefer that it was attractive. The first problem though was wading through the list of terms that go along with front derailers. Top pull, bottom pull, dual pull, top swing, bottom swing, traditional, etc, etc. So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are not available in 28.6, only 31.8. Re: [RBW] Re: Attractive front derailers
I just put a Suntour Cyclone FD on my Riv, simple and classic. But, I had to make the switch from the IRD Alpina FD when I put on the Stronglight 99 crank. The Stronglight crankarm is so close to the big ring that a FD with a flat outer plate is required, no modern sculpting. Shifts the Stronglight triple 52/40/30 just fine, via Silver bar-ends. [RBW] in praise of the chambray shirt
I almost never buy expensive clothes. Spending $82 on a shirt is generally way out of my price range, and thankfully my job allows me to wear whatever I want. But I took a chance on the black-gray chambray shirt Rivendell sells, because it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for in terms of style and material. I'm a tall slender guy but I don't like large clothes, because often as clothes get taller, they get wider too, and I prefer a slim silhouette on my shirts. I was on the fence about ordering a large or a medium, but I flipped a coin and went for the large. Initially I was disappointed because the shirt was too wide or billowy on me, and I almost returned it. But I decided to throw it in the wash instead, and now, after a few washes and wears, it's shrunk down to basically a perfect fit. It lost some of its length, but the shrinking in the profile was more significant. The material is the right weight for this Seattle spring weather, and the slightly extended shirt tail makes it a good riding shirt. I don't have many shirts that are good for the awkward situations that arise if I'm biking to a place where I have to look presentable but I can't easily change my clothes when I get there. This shirt fills that niche quite well. Was it worth $82? I don't own enough $82 shirts to compare it to, so it's hard to say. But I'm very happy with it and would probably buy another one if this one were lost. [RBW] Re: Attractive front derailers
Hi Jim I contacted Mark at Riv regarding upgrading the crankset on my Homer to a Sugino triple and he recommended a Shimano Claris FD-2403-B front derailer. They stock them for builds at Riv World Headquarters but don't have them in the catalog. It is not totally silver - the clamp is gray (lighter to my eye than in the attached pic). I believe it was only $27.00 and Mark spoke highly of them. http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/nl/index/components/road/claris/product.-code-FD-2403-B.-type-.fd_road.html It was easy to install especially after a call to Mark who refreshed my memory as to the correct procedure - something to do with not running the chain before adjusting the hi-lo screws Duh! [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations
After email Grant and talking with Mark and Kevin at Rivendell today I've decided on a more conservative approach to fixed gear: -- Get used to the bike and its pedal clearance with SS. -- Try fixed after a while, once I know pedal clearance will work where I'm riding. Basic message from both of them is: The QB is designed as a SS bike, not a fixed. If it was designed as a fixed, especially for rougher terrain, it would have bigger tires and higher BB to prevent pedal crashes in turns and on rocks/roots, etc. While I'm curious to test how fixed and vertigo get along, I want to do so as safely as possible. This seems the prudent way to accomplish this. With abandon, Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Interesting idea, especially considering the abandoned cog is an 11 or 12. That's an idea worth looking into. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations
That sounds a very reasonable approach to me, given the QB's lower bb. Note that if you decide you like fixed off road, nice mtbs from the immediately pre suspension era are still relatively available and cheap, and with an ENO hub'd wheel and some 60 mm tires, you'd be all set. One of the nicest handling (of its kind, of course) bikes that I've owned is that very early '90s Diamond Back Axis Team that I blather on about so much, converted to fixed with Eno hub and sporting 60 mm Big Apples, a 64 gear, and Noodles. Tho' I have to admit that while I love ss off road, I hated fixed off road. As for gearing, you may well find that you develop a penchant for gears higher than you now anticipate. Funny. When I was younger I read a novel called MIG Pilot* which was the story of Victor Belenko, the guy who defected to the U.S.A. via Tokyo with a MIG-25 back in the 1970's. I have one of the extra large that was on closeout and I love it. Because it is a wide fit, I, too, was a little concerned by the sizing (though I knew I needed a Large, was just swayed by the cost). What I've found is that the generous fit lets it act like a nice overshirt to dress up a hoodie, or by itself it's a nice light jacket. Not high on my priority, but sometimes I imagine picking up another in Large. One button broke this week, and that's after only two or three washes, so I'll be a little more delicate with the dryer, etc. in the future, but the fact is that it lends itself easily to the fun mending aesthetic Patrick uses. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations
I've been riding various short rides and their hills in poser ss mode that are shorter than many of the hills I ride on trails (that are still snow locked, so inaccessible), so they are a good analog for at least benchmarking where I am at the moment. My test gear is 46.8 (36-21) and I'm climbing them but barely (that no doubt will improve as I strengthen and learn). They're about as steep but shorter as the trails I ride. Sheldon recommends 35 inches for mountain biking SS, so I'm also using that as a benchmark, but my initial gearing will be: 32/40 front 17, 20/22 rear That's a low of 39.7 and a high of 64.3. That should give me a lot of options for learning on this highly varied terrain around here, but I'm always open to suggestions. When I get stronger I can always reassess. But the reality also is you can only go so fast on the stuff I ride due to its technical nature, especially with 40mm tires. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Tire and Gearing Recommendations
For comparison, my low gear on my Hunqapillar is 19.5, though I now have an 18.4 low since switching to a 9-speed cassette (but I'll likely not use that much -- I switched cassette to lower the range of the middle ring, a conversion which worked spectacularly). But I load the Hunqapillar down for all day or overnight and multi-day trips, which will no doubt be easier after riding the QB. Grin. I actually just changed a 9sp cassette for a 7sp, and the shifting got way worse. Hi all, Sorry for being late in responding to some of your emails, it's been quite a flurry of sales. I can say for certain that the Saddlesack, Thin Gripsters, Shopsack, Tweed Trunksack and GB Felling Axe are all sold. I am awaiting responses on many other items and will post an updated PDF of what remains tomorrow. I would also like to add two additional items into the mix, which could be someone's badass Dynamo system: 1) 36H Schmidt SON Classic dynamo hub (hub only). Ridden about 15,000 miles and still in perfect working order. It is covered under warranty with Peter White until November 2014. Will clean, polish and post a picture tomorrow. Asking $120 shipped. 2) Schmidt Edelux headlight. Purchased along with the hub in 2009 and in very good condition, with just some surface wear. Will polish and post a picture tomorrow too. Also includes RM handlebar mount, asking $100 shipped. OR get both of these for $210 shipped. On Thursday, May 1, 2014 3:43:15 PM UTC-4, Jim Bronson wrote: Is the trunk sack small or large? [$25] o Campagnalo “Mirage” Front Derailer: Bought from Riv, also works really well. The finish could use a bit of wax in places, which I’d be happy to apply for the buyer. Asking $80 shipped. o Grid-Gray Shopsack, small: [$15 shipped] o VP-001 or ‘Thin Gripster’ pedals in black: Bought a few months ago and used sparingly. [$45 shipped] o Nitto Moustache Bar: Mounted on my QB since 2009 and never ever crashed. Only marks are from sliding brake levers off. Will also throw in my other scraped up moustache bar for free (with ½ tape still on) if you’d like. [$48 shipped] o Shimano XT Rear Derailer: Used lots and only replaced because I wanted a shiny new one. Works just fine. [$25] o Campagnalo “Mirage” Front Derailer: Bought from Riv, also works really well. [$20] o Cygolite Expillion Headlights: One is from 2013 [$30] and has a fresher battery, the other is from 2012 [$25]. o Cygolite MityCross Headlight w/ battery pack: Very bright (if bulky) headlight that was used sparingly and works well. [$15]. o New Cateye Strada Wireless Computer. [$35] o VO Threadless Stem w/ 25.4mm clamp, 17º rise, 120mm: [$15] o Pletscher TwinLegger Kickstand in black: Used a bunch and should last forever [$20] o New Pletscher “rat trap” front/rear rack in black: [$20] o New Adidas Samba shoes in black, men’s 13: Bought in 2012 and never bothered
Re: [RBW] Re: Attractive front derailers
The microshift FD on that Blue Della Santa is branded and sold as a Sun XCD. I should have mentioned that, sorry. I got mine from Soma Fab, the somafab.com website still lists them for sale. [RBW] Long shot: WTT DA 7400 7 sp shifters for 8
I just came into a nice 7400 crank to replace the ultra compact TA, and I'd like to run, and index, 8 instead of 7 cogs to regain some of the range lost by going to considerably larger cogs (say 17-28 with the 53/39 vs 13-23 for the 44/30). The gaps in back diminish as the cogs get bigger. Don't worry, I know what I am doing. Poss may have a 7400 fd or rd to swap, too. OR, could use a set of Retrofrictions and simply abandon the indexing. Thanks. [RBW] Re: FS: Paul, Phil Wood,Nitto, Berthoud, Schwalbe, Sackville, Grandsfors Bruks et. al.
Mike - my apologies if this is the incorrect method of response, but I'm down for the paul flatbed. I have included shipping cost for some items and will add a reasonable s/h for others. Pictures for items can be found in this album (will upload all shortly): https://imgur.com/a/InORH o Phil Wood Fixed/SS Wheelset: Phil Wood high flange 36H (Front Rear) track hubs with 120mm rear hub that is flip/flop with fixed and freewheel threadings. Built in 2010 by a local wheelbuilder. Mavic A719 rims and DT Swiss spokes. Asking $180 + $25 s/h per wheel = [$230]. o Nitto Lugged Seatpost: Bought in 2011 and has some “wear” on finish. [$140] o Berthoud Men’s ‘Aspin’ Saddle: Bought in July 2013 and ridden about 500 miles. Conservatively treated with Obenauf’s and protected from rain/sweat with a cover. This particular saddle has been a little unusual with how the grain color has changed unevenly, but the saddle is in good shape. [$130] o Paul ‘Flatbed’ front basket with stem clamp extension. This rack is in good condition and includes the extra stem clamp which was long enough for my 64cm Sam. [$85] o SKF 113mm Bottom Bracket: Bought from Compass in November and only used about 500 mi. because I ordered the wrong spindle length. The red cup has some chipping from multiple installs, but the BB works like new. Can include 2.5mm spacer. [$100 shipped] o New Schwalbe 700X35Marathon Supreme tires: Bought as extra but changed tire allegiance, $60 each shipped or $110 for both shipped. o Sackville Tweed Trunksack: Bought in 2012 and used for a year, in pretty nice shape. [$70] o Sackville Saddlesack Medium: I have lost the 2 saddle and 1 seatpost leather straps and the main compartment closure straps got ripped off after getting caught in my spokes. Eunice, thank you so much for sharing this. So touching. So sad.
