[RBW] Re: Entmoot tire recs
I'm bringing a fixed wheelset with Soma C-Lines, and an S3X (FW)/generator set with very worn Mythos CX knibblies. I may just do the C-Lines, and trade the 44t ring for a 42/39 chainring setup. I'm more concerned with Quickbeam gearing than tires. Philip www.biketinker.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Anyone using a Saddlesack on a porteur rack?
Yes - medium SaddleSack on haulin Colin rack. It wasn't ideal, but it worked out fine for a few months of commuting detail. I used a strap to hold the dowel up. I find the shopsack basket a more versatile and aesthetic solution. At this point it is back on the saddle where it belongs. [RBW] Re: How many of your bikes will take the HAR?
Single eyelets on our Hillbornes is definitely not a mistake. These details change over time, that's all. I can't comment on why a small load on the front of your Hillborne handles poorly while a 30 pound human near the front doesn't. I've run15-20 pounds on the Nitto Mini+platrack on multiple s24Os on my Hillborne and it was great for me. I've always assumed that was a Wisconsin thing and not a mistake specific to my frame alone. Right? Anyways, I put a mini front rack on it and wasn't happy with how it felt with anything more than a couple bags of chips, been considering trying out a lowrider to see the difference. I guess that low rider won't be the HAR without some rigging to get it comfortable sharing the lower with my fender struts. I've thought about brazing some eyelets on but my skills aren't up to the challenge yet, something about compromising my fork's strength... Can anyone tell me approximately how much better a lowrider would feel with a few pounds on it compared to the mini front? I ride with my 2.75 year old on a stem mounted seat which sits his 30 some odd pounds behind the stem. It feels fine apart from knocking my knees on his seat, I assume mounting the load behind the axle as a lowrider does has a similar stabilizing effect? -Kai Vierstra, Brooklyn NY -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. For sure the HAR will connect to the lower eyelets. It just won't be level, most likely. Not being level won't cause any problem besides looking tilted. Re: [RBW] How many of your bikes will take the HAR?
It shouldn't be all *that *hard to create a small L-shaped fitting that screws to the lower eyelets and provides upper eyelets *and* replacement lowers. It would take about 1.5 sq inches of sheet metal, max, a saw, and a drill. You could also make it out of aluminum and thread it it. Lots of options. Granted, they're all kind of hackish, but then so are band-on front derailers. ;-) On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 10:38:56 AM UTC-4, Bill Lindsay wrote: For sure the HAR will connect to the lower eyelets. [RBW] 20th Anniversary/Entmoot Friday afternoon/Sat AM Plans?
Dav, Contrary to popular belief I make for a great ride leader when I know where I'm going.Im pretty sure I know where I'm going for this ride. All seriousness though. Friday for those coming early theres a s240 near RivHQ that day. Some Northerns were planning to get here sometime early morning or afternoon. Ill be bold enough to say meet at RivHq around 12ish Friday. If you get there early or late no biggie. Maybe a ramble around Grants hills or maybe just hang out and talk maybe get coffee. 430ish after all closing at the shop we leave for the hills of Shell Ridge. This is true Riv style. No reservations needed. 15 minutes of riding Saturday 9ish am at the Ferry building for the hard ride to china camp. If you climbed diablo before you should be fine. Lots of breaks and picture taking. Maybe even a secret watering hole. Expect walking and carrying your bike over fences.. [RBW] Official Entmoot Ride, Sunday July 13th
The website has officially singled me out as a ride leader for Sunday. Seeing as my only real Riv is a Quickbeam, I thought I'd make this the official Entmoot ride, built around the capabilities of the Quickbeam. Don't have a specific route laid yet, but I have sought the wisdom of the local sage known as Cyclofiend Steelenframe. Rest assured that this will be a comparatively chill ride, with much more minimal climbing than Manny's gruelfest epic the day before, good for anyone with a singlespeed, those looking for a more mild ride, or those looking to recover from Manny's ride. It is an Entmoot, but any creature of the forest will be welcome (read: open to all bikes, not just Quickbeams, singlespeeds, or even Rivs for that matter). Expect a good amount of gear gawking and arguing about ideal gear ratios and which color of QB was best (the answer is orange, obviously). There will probably be a stop for beer at somepoint, if I have anything to say about it. I have to work on Saturday so I'll be driving over to China Camp from Berkeley on Sunday morning. Good trick, making an eyelet-doubler. Careful with loading and angles, don't want it moving around. RivHQ told me my Sam wasn't designed for substantial front loads therefore recommended Nitto mini+small basket not Nitto BFR+big basket. Seen a lot of big ones since, so might as well save $ and get the BFR. It's a shame to hide the beauty of fork bends, tips, dropouts, and SON hub behind bags anyway. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Entmoot bike decision
Life always presents options, what makes it interesting is how we choose. For me, it's a decision over which bike to ride to the Entmooot, between the very logical and nicely-appointed LongLow Custom, and the much more spartan QuickBeam (orange!), which is where my gut is pointing. I think with the front rack, and a borrowed rear rack basket, the QB will do nicely. Then, the next decision is whether to ride from the Ferry Building, over the bridge, or look up at the bridge from the ferry, and ride from Larkspur. [RBW] Re: Official Entmoot Ride, Sunday July 13th
Mild sounds like my type of ride. [RBW] Re: Ram versus Roadeo; trade?
A couple other things to consider. 1) When I switched from a slightly too big 58cm Ram to a slightly too small 56cm Ram, I noticed that the smaller frame was noticeably more responsive, at all speed ranges. Not a huge change though. (I actually prefered the 58 but got used to the 56 pretty quickly) 2) For the past 10 yrs I've been running the 56cm Ram with 28mm tires and I recently switched to 31mm tires and those tires create more high speed stability, but I don't notice a low speed difference. If you want light steel, you might consider welded as lugs add a half pound or so and Riv's aren't really going for light weight to begin with. -Dave J On Sunday, July 6, 2014 4:15:27 PM UTC-4, Patrick Moore wrote: I love the Ram; it just feels right -- in the sense that it encourages hard pedaling, while some bikes just feel as if they drain your effort. But it feels slightly more sedate than my customs -- slower to turn in; while the customs seem to have most of the Ram's straight line stability. That is to say, it's not as spritely as the ideal bike. Also, I really, reeely want a light, steel gofast. I really don't need the Ram as another commuter/errand bike, which is what it gets used as, since my '03 handles those duties. I am aiming for the moon, but just in case: would anyone care to discuss trading a 57 cm Roadeo frame for a 58 cm Ram? Ultegra headset included; and I could add things to the Ram side of the scale until the swap is fair. In particular, I have a SP dynohub that I'd not include in any Roadeo build. My other option is to buy (cheap) the 60X57 very early '80s Bertin -- long stays, short front-center, tres leger, Vitus IIRC, that I sold my brother back circa 1998 and that he now is selling. [RBW] Homer's first proper, if not long, ride
Mounted the Mark's Rack with upside-down EDelux yesterday. Took advantage this morning of beautiful weather for twenty-some miles of rolling Iowa for Homer's first real ride. I must admit I wore padded shorts. Brooks, my English butler (see what I did there?), is simply not adequately accustomed to my posterior yet. The bike lives up to the hype. It is ride is smooth, responsive, easy uphill and into the wind. It handles superbly in gravel, even fresh post-flooding dumps of dusty white boulders (thanks Johnson County!). The Marathon Supremes (700C x 40 mm nominal; about 37 mm right now) are characteristically Schwalbe-ish, but at 40-45 psi are cushy enough for the time being. There is plenty of clearance for 40 mm tires, even with fenders, and more without. I remain unsure about Noodles, though. I'm used to narrower bars with a rando bend (the LHT has the VO Chris's Rando Bar) and a longer ramp. Not that the Noodles are uncomfortable, but when I hopped on the LHT later to head into the office, the rando ramps felt downright luxurious in comparison. Time will tell. I'm interested in reading comments from those who might have used Noodles then switched to a rando bar, or vice versa, or have one of each on different bikes. Pictures show that Iowa is not flat. And that we do indeed have cattle (and hogs, too, but I can't post odors): https://www.flickr.com/photos/125863173@N06/sets/72157645186309248/ -- Bob -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Good luck! Baggy beats the heck out of too snug, and Riv is the only place I've found (short of making our own, which I haven't asked my wife to yet) that is baggy enough and too even a bit more than I'd like. We added 6 of fabric to one company's knickers to make them work and they are fantastic. Just opened up the seam on the inside of the crotch all the way through to the cuff and added in one piece 6 wide. Seamless crotch and plenty of room for the bits and bobs. Hmm. Having gone out and bought a Marin bike map, I notice that instead of riding around the peninsula from San Rafael to China Camp, it's possible to go through the peninsula. Climbing, of course, on dirt, I need hardly say. So I'm thinking that maybe the Ferry option ride won't be quite as super-easy as originally advertised. Re: [RBW] knicker recommendations?
Try Aerotech Designs. The urban pedal pushers are pretty good. Less baggy than the MUSA not as tight as swerve. And they have lots of places to stash things. Left hand entry takes getting used to. But doable. Chrome telegraph are good as well not sure if they are current production. Heavier weight and more $ than Aerotech Designs. Fewer places to stash stuff. Nice photos! Those of us in the western part of the country are envious of the green. Sounds like the bike is mostly working well. It looks great. dougP On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 6:31:53 PM UTC-7, Bob Cook wrote: Mounted the Mark's Rack with upside-down EDelux yesterday. Re: [RBW] How many of your bikes will take the HAR?
Tying this HAR thread with the Enmoot bike thread. IF I was able to go to the Entmoot, I'd be tempted to bring my double-double, since so many of you will be on your Quickbeams. My double-double has double fork tip eyelets and mid fork braze-ons, so I went ahead and set it up with my HAR. Of course I need to bag-match and wait for the olive HAR panniers, but this is going to be a sweet stripped down S24O setup. I used the trick of running a bolt from the inside of the eyelet and a nylock nut holding the rack onto that post from the outside https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aJYGK52a7js/U74QpYj7UWI/B9s/AkcULL73iDI/s1600/IMG_3490.JPG More Photos of the setup https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157642798847383/ On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 7:38:56 AM UTC-7, Bill Lindsay wrote: For sure the HAR will connect to the lower eyelets. On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 1:07 PM, Bill Lindsay tape...@gmail.com wrote: The Hub Area Rack fits best on an eyelet above the fork tip and on mid-fork braze ons. Will it fit your bike? Most current Riv models have fork tips with double eyelets. If you buy a brand new A Homer Hilsen, Hunqapillar, Cheviut, Hillborne, or Atlantis, you are going to get double eyelet fork tips. If you buy a Roadeo or a San Marcos, you'll get single eyelets. I have a Hub Area Rack, have had it for a while. It was an early prototype that I talked them into letting me buy. For what it's worth, I paid a fair bit more for mine that you guys are paying now, but I share that as a reason for you to be happy, not as a reason for me to be sad. Anyhow, now that there are bags for it, I've pulled it back out. Only now do I realize that my old (2009) Hillborne does not have the upper eyelets and my old (2010) Hilsen also doesn't have them. Only my Bombadil and my Gunnar doublespeed has upper eyelets and mid fork braze ons. I wish I could snap my fingers and have upper eyelets appear on my Hilsen and my Hillborne so I could run this rack on those bikes as well. Oh well. Anyhow, as a workaround, it looks like it would be possible to run the HAR on the lower eyelets, but it might have a tilt to it. Not the end of the world but not ideal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
