I'm not sure taking a bike to outer space would be such a good idea.
There's nothing to ride on up there.

[RBW] Re: 650b wheel building question

2014-08-01 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Has spokes changed that much? According to a chart in Jobst's book, the
yield strength of spokes was something like twice or thrice the tension
typically applied in a normal wheel. The spokes are typically not any
thinner than are currently available to mitigate spoke windup from to low
torsional strength. I actually have some experience with this as building
with 2.0/1.5 spokes, especially on the rear drive side, is a bit of a pain.

[RBW] Re: Paul Thumbies or IRD stem mounted shifters?

2014-08-01 Thread dougP
I've been using thumbies on my Atlantis since changing over to flat bars.
I like them a lot (levers came from my bar ends). Other riders speak
highly of the stem shifters & they really are a clean installation. I
think if most of your riding is on roads & good trails, stems would be fine
on drop bars. However, thumbies have the advantage of easy access in
rougher off-road situations.

Since you've got them, try them both. Be prepared for a bit of screwing
around with cable housings & cables when changing. Not bad once you've
done it a few times but not fun either.

For a couple of years? To me, that suggests the "different things" must be

I have *ridden* from 0 to 7000 feet quite a few times, without doing
anything to my tires. So have lots of other people on this list. Our tires
didn't explode off the rims.

Riding up mountains on one's bike is not a rare occurrence, and tires don't
explode when you get to the top. This is not a real problem.

Pedant here. They are *not* at 0psi. They are at ambient air pressure. :)

No, yogurt containers bulge and water bottles do too. They are at 0 psi
when they are sealed, so the change in ambient pressure results in a large
percentage change. Not so for a tire already under pressure.

On the other hand, I've met some know-it-all mechanics who aren't very good.

Yogurt containers bulging has more to do with the live cultures and natural
bacteria in it than elevation. You can often see containers of yogurt at
any level as they near the expiration date may bulge. Not to mention a host

[RBW] Re: Deflate bike tires before ascent in car?

2014-08-01 Thread dougP
Professional race team support vehicles carry loads of spare wheels, fully
inflated & ready to ride, up to significant altitudes, often multiple times
during the day, with no concern about exploding tires. My guess is these
tires are a good deal lighter in construction than a typical touring tire.

I've seen that with food & beverage containers. Always point them away
from yourself when opening to avoid splatters. Even happens on pressurized
airplanes.

All rallying and riding will be centered at Hiawatha Cyclery, 4313 E 54th
St, Minneapolis, MN 55417. It's inside the corner formed by the junction of
Highways 55 and 62 in South Minneapolis. There is plenty of free parking on
adjacent residential streets.

HC is just a few blocks from two different light rail stations (50th
Street, and VA Medical Center), which means convenience from any lodging
located near downtown Minneapolis, MSP airport, or Mall of America.
Minneapolis is arguably the most bike-accommodated city in the USA, so
you'll have no problem pedaling from one side of town to the other on
high-quality bicycle infrastructure. Downtown Saint Paul is also a
reasonable option.

Marc's campsite at Lebanon Hills is roughly 17 bike-able miles away.

[RBW] FS/WTT: Nitto Technomic and Moustache

2014-08-01 Thread Mike K.
I have a Nitto Technomic stem, 26mm clamp. 225mm quill length. Only 50mm
reach. Great alternative to a Dirt Drop if you need something high and
tight.
Also, a Nitto Moustache bar. I will have to check when I get home if it's
25.4mm or 26mm clamp area. I bought it locally and don't remember.

Looking for a Technomic Stem with 70 or 80mm reach, or one of them new
Albastache bars if anyone has a pair that hasn't worked out to your liking.

If you're just looking to just buy the stem or bars from me, I'll take $50
for either item, shipped CONUS. I'll put up pictures this evening after
work.

Feel free to pm me off the list.

[RBW] RBWHQ Spy Photos!!

2014-08-01 Thread Bill Lindsay

I went to RBW HQ this morning to pick up some Olive HA Panniers. Grant
posted on here that they'd give me a deal that made up for the fact that I
overpaid a bit for my HA Rack. He promised I'd be happy and I am.

While I was there, I saw two (TWO!) of the Clem prototypes hanging on
hooks. It was fun to see them. One looked like a size SMALL, and the
other looked like a size LARGE. I did not photograph them, because they
looked to me like early prototypes. The front end was definitely not
final. I have kind of a reputation with the Riv staff for taking spy
photos, and so now I generally ask permission or wait for encouragement to
do so. I will confirm the curvy seatstays were the solution so that every
size can use the Clem seat lug. Grant handed me a long time ago a lug that
looked like a napkin ring with RBW cast into it. I was happy to see that
lug as a head tube reinforcing ring on the topside of the Clem Headtube.
The bottom side was not reinforced, which is why I say the front end was
not final, and is why I didn't photograph it. It looks like a cool bike.
There was no fork in the prototypes.

The thing that Dave at Riv did encourage me to photograph was a mature
Appaloosa Prototype. They had three sizes of the Appaloosa hanging up, all
painted and apparently build-ready. Vince mounted the headbadge on the
Medium and had me take a couple photos. The Appaloosa looks terrific. The
Biggun of the three Appaloosa even had FOUR (count em four!) sets of water
bottle braze ons, and was (is) an incredible metallic barfo green. The
Appaloosas and the Clems both had that really slick read dropout that Grant
showed off the other day.

Anyway, locals, if you visit, they are hanging there in the showroom.
Non-locals, sorry, you'll have to keep speculating, or ask if you have
questions.

Anyhow, here are two Appaloosa Spy shots:

Headtube and Badge, freshly installed

Slightly evolved seat tube cluster area. Note the tentacular stays connect
in front (tigged) with a simpler lug joint at the Seat Tube. Framed with
horsey poster in the background. Note the H2O bosses on the diagatube and
the downtube

It was definitely an entertaining visit to HQ.

Re: [RBW] Re: Deflate bike tires before ascent in car?

2014-08-01 Thread Anne Paulson
If your tire is going to explode if its pressure increases by 5 psi, you
should not deflate it when you go to altitude. Rather, you should get a new
tire at once, because you are riding on a dangerous tire.

You post the right chart but are interpreting it incorrectly. At sea
level atmospheric pressure is ~15psi, and at 7000 ft it's ~11psi. His tire
pressure will increase by that same 4 psi. When you measure tire pressure
you measure the difference between the pressure inside the tire and the
difference outside the tire. A 40 psi taken into the vacuum of outer space
would then measure 55psi. 55psi absolute pressure inside the tire.

Your potato chips bag bulges but it's still a really low pressure.
 Probably less than 1psi.

That's true, only if you start with 0psi in your tires. The ambient
pressure has dropped, but this does not proportionally increase the tire
pressure, it simply adds a few psi to the pressure. It's easy to conduct a
thought experiment to verify this. Imagine a tire taken to space (or vacuum
environment). The pressure goes up by 14.7psi, which is the original
ambient pressure no longer counteracting the pressure from the air in the
tires. If the pressure were to be scaled, it would increase by an infinite
ratio!

Re: [RBW] Re: silver shifters question

2014-08-01 Thread Tim Gavin
I cut a spring from a cheap retractable ball-point pen in half, and used
that for the two shifters. Works just fine.

My original springs jumped ("geronimo!") from the shifters when I opened
them up. They were quickly assimilated by the dust bunnies in my house.

Re: [RBW] Re: Deflate bike tires before ascent in car?

2014-08-01 Thread Anne Paulson
No, no, no, and you don't need to deflate them when you put your bike in an
unpressurized airplane cargo hold either.

Steve says, you don't need to do it but would it hurt? Well, yeah, it
could. Your pressurized tire nicely protects your rim. Your flat tire
doesn't.

Re: [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon

2014-08-01 Thread Anne Paulson
I've been happy staying at Oak Street Station B&B. I've stayed there three
times now, and always felt welcomed and fed. I just happened on it the
first time; I arrived in Ashland looking for a place to stay, got a
recommendation from the lodging recommendation place, called up Oak Street
Station, and they said, "I'm just baking cookies, what kind would you
like?"

Sue and John, the proprietors, are also good about play recommendations.
When I follow their recommendations, I like the plays. The one time I saw a
play they didn't think too highly of, I didn't like it much either.

They are perfectly happy to host touring cyclists, and they give you indoor
storage for the bike.

I know this is a bit of a moot point now since Kurt is going to do a car
rental, but for anyone else thinking about using Amtrak (Coast Starlight)
for a tour in this area: Currently all bikes must be boxed and can only
board/unboard at a station with baggage service. Dunsmuir doesn't have
baggage. North of Sacramento the first stop to have baggage service is
Klamath Falls, then Eugene.

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

2014-08-01 Thread justinaugust
Squats!
Squats helped to rid me of my chronic knee pain that I blamed on:
- Low Q
- High Q
- Crank length
- Saddle setback
- Foot on pedal position

Squats stretch out that whole system. I would also advise trying the "Couch
Stretch" from Becoming a Supple Leopard, cobra pose, child pose and many
other olympic weightlifting type stretches.

My two cents after you get the saddle in place.

In summary: do you /need/ to do this? No. Would it hurt? No. That's
probably the same answer for tubulars; but traditionalists would always
bleed the air out of their tubulars after a ride anyway, although I
don't know why. (I know this still goes on, saw it after a ride last
week.) I'm not even sure it matters: there's so much ritual magic
associated with tubulars and their use that defies logical explanation,
kind of like thuribles. Explaining it away wouldn't enhance the experience.

pressure you measure the difference between the pressure inside the

pressure inside the tire.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! I was feeling a little frustrated with my
planning when I originally posted but after getting all this great advice I
came up with a route last night that I am super exited about and feel is
just right distance wise for me to do in a week.

The plan now is to do a one way car rental to Eureka or Crescent city then
ride the coast back and hit a little of the lost coast on the way. I had
not thought of a one way rental but it solves all my logistic problems I
was running into. Doesn't look to bad price-wise either.

Sorry for my replies being slow, they still have to be approved before
showing up.

I'm off for a ride now, happy friday everyone!

Tires are built to withstand twice the rated maximum pressure. You won't
get anywhere near that from a 7,000-ft ascent.

Re: [RBW] 3D lugs?

2014-08-01 Thread Mathew Greiner
I think Riv should build up a super straightforward Cheviot (or Clem
Smith,Jr.?) to enter next year. They'd have the best music of the informational
videos.

The Portland design, if I remember correctly is entirely 3D printed from
titanium.

This is a pretty neat challenge, and I'm glad for the extra visibility it gives
to bike commuting. Still, the entries in this rarely address the simple issues
that are important to commuting with pleasure: comfort, drivetrain and brakes
that are low maintenance and geared well for your terrain, durable tires…

Instead they add spring loaded collapsible racks (why, exactly?) and elaborate
electrical gee-gaws. It's gee whiz marketing, but it doesn't automatically make
for a good bike, and most all of the designs are set with proprietary racks and
accessories. Adherence to standards may limit the design process, but it also
comes with a boatload of flexibility.

[RBW] Re: Deflate bike tires before ascent in car?

2014-08-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
Ron

You post the right chart but are interpreting it incorrectly. At sea level
atmospheric pressure is ~15psi, and at 7000 ft it's ~11psi. His tire
pressure will increase by that same 4 psi.

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

2014-08-01 Thread Kevin M
Hi Liesl,

It's not just a saddle height thing, it's also a saddle setback thing.

If I recall correctly, you're riding a Riv with some major setback from a
really slack seat tube. Is that right? A common metric for measuring
correct saddle position puts the front of the knee directly above the pedal
spindle while the spindle is horizontal. I would suggest you make sure
you're coming close to conforming to this standard.

If you're having major pain, you need to go see a pro. Ask around locally
and find a well trusted bike fitter who works with all types of cyclists,
not just racers. This stuff is hard to diagnose online or by yourself. I
got a pro fit a few years back when I was riding my Bruce Gordon Rock 'n
Road. We changed the crank length, saddle height, and saddle setback. I was
surprised by how far "off" I was using the best advice I had gathered from
the internet. A couple millimeters can make a huge difference!

I am laughing because I played viola in my youth; no slight intended, I assure

Pasela 32's = violins
Soma Xpress 38's=violas

Big bens 55=basses

This might support my totally unfounded theory about the tone. Spoke length or

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

2014-08-01 Thread Mark Reimer
I had the same thing happen to me two seasons ago and it kept me off the
bike for nearly 3 months in a knee brace.

I was going on my first s240, maybe 160km round trip, and decided to put my
brooks on my cross bike, which had a zero setback post. I should note, up
until this date I had never had any knee pain at all, ever. Either the
change in saddle position front-to-back, or a slightly off saddle height
(or both!) caused some problems and by the next day I couldn't even put
weight on the dumb thing. I had x-rays and went to a physiotherapist for
three months before it finally cleared up.

For me, it was the fact that I don't do any exercise other than riding
bike. Just riding bike all day every day. Turns out that's a bad idea. Only
riding a bike will result in some pretty skewed muscle growth, and if you
don't stretch a lot, a tightened IT Band. The pain was the result of my
knee cap being pulled over to one side as a result of imbalanced muscle
development and a tight it band. A combination of selected leg stretches,
simple leg exercises (a few different squats, lunges, planks, a few others)
and some time on an IT band roller (akin to the 7th level of hell) and I've
never had pain again.

At times I'll sense that the pain is starting to come back, but 15 minutes
of stretches and a few squats and it's gone.

[RBW] Re: 650b wheel building question

2014-08-01 Thread Anton Tutter
The idea is that you want the spokes to be in the "sweet spot" between
always being tensioned yet never reaching the limit of their elastic
modulus. Too much tension will stress the eyelets and hub flanges, and you
also approach the limit of the spoke elastic modulus; Too little tension
and the spokes will not maintain enough tension as the wheel deflects.
