[RBW] Re: Brisk November Ride

2014-11-13 Thread ascpgh
Some of that traffic you met may be there for elk season.

A friend sent me a shot of the snow front coming over the divide at sunset
with the Papoose burn and Trout Mountain in the background the other
afternoon. They are at Spar City, Mineral County, west of Creede, on foot in
the Weminuche Wilderness area, hiking and scouting ahead of the season.
Content related because in the primordial days of bikes ridden off roads,
we used to ride in there (on the lunar surface created by pack animals'
6-8" deep hoof craters) to fly fish and camp at the encouragement of
managers. We would be treated quite harshly for such a deviant incursion
now.

I'm pretty sure it's a Mt-Campee. I have one just like yours, and it has
plenty of clearance on a 700c Riv. It's a bit lighter than the ones Riv
designed, but still fits full size panniers. A nice medium size rack, with
Nitto's lovely fillet brazing and nickel plating.

[RBW] Re: Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?

2014-11-13 Thread Wildcat96
FYI, I run Fatty Rumpkins (they measure a true 41mm) under SKS P50
Longboards on my Sam. The P50's were a pretty tight fit when I first
installed them, but I was able to get at least a couple of mm of additional
clearance under the front sidepull by using Sheldon's Fender Nuts and
mounting the fender behind the crown. They pull the fender up a little
higher behind the crown. I now have at least 1cm clearance all around.
Not sure how well they would work with the Honjo's however.

Tiny thing, petty I'm sure, but "Waterford Atlantis" sort of hands off our
hand in the bike to Waterford. We're happy and proud that Wford builds some
models for us, but the things that make an Atlantis an Atlantis all came
from us...so "USA-built Atlantis" goes down much easier here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?

2014-11-13 Thread Tim Gavin
I also used a Sheldon's nut to mount the tab to the back of the fork. It
resulted in better clearance than with the daruma. I also bent both front
and rear tabs to effectively shorten them and bring the fender as close to
the bridge as possible.

I'm running 45 mm VO fenders over 38 mm tires, so the extra clearance is
welcome. As is the extra clearance from using Paul Racers instead of
sidepulls that push on the fender.

Likewise, the tightest clearance is at the bolts for the stays.

I hear pebbles rattle through pretty often. Yet I've ridden it, with
fenders, on rural gravel in Iowa (.5-1" crushed limestone) and never got
anything stuck in the fender. A good reason to keep the fender clearance
even, or maybe increasing, towards the front of the bike. You'd hate to
have it narrow towards the front and trap debris.

I believe Honjos, like VO fenders, use 5 mm stays with no quick release.
The FMF Safety Tabs
 from PDW fit
these stays and add quick release safety to your fenders.

I took a stick in my rear (non QR) P45 fender, and it folded it under the
brake bridge at ruined the fender. So I put these QR's on the front AND
the rear fenders now. One additional advantage of the FMF Safety Tabs is
they use a grub/set screw to attach the stay to the safety tab, which makes
it much, much easier to finely adjust the length of the stay. The standard
Honjo/VO tabs are attractive in their simplicity, but they were a real pain
to adjust when my rack and fenders are on the same bolt (single eyelet
Campy 1010s on my Riv).

Cheers,
Tim

You make a valid point Grant. I think a "USA-built Atlantis" is a more
fair description and I'll try to refer to it that way in the future. It is
my understanding that the "Japan-built Atlantis" is every bit as good and I
am sure I would be every bit as happy with one, as long as it fits me.
I love my Sam and it's quality is certainly up there with the Atlantis.
Thank you and the folks at Rivendell for designing such great bikes, no
matter where they are built!

[RBW] Re: Wheel Stabilizer or no?

2014-11-13 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cecily, I read your post and designed a simple contraption for my Atlantis.
I recently bought a Nitto big front rack from Riv and it flops! It was
easy to make. I had a frame bag that I made, so I used that to anchor and
store the elastic backed strap when not in use. Mine is anchored on one
end, but you could make it with hooks on each end. The first one I made was
just a cord with hooks. I found it tangled in my bike bag, so I sewed a
strap to stretched out, weak elastic. It shrinks it in half when not
attached, less tangles. Watch the video attached all the way until it stops
for a demo. It's cheap, fast, light and unbreakable. Perfect for touring
and daily use. We must banish wheel flop!

Re: [RBW] FS: Nitto Campee Medium Rear Rack - Used

2014-11-13 Thread dougP
A while back I had one of these on my 58 cm Atlantis with 700 x 45 Schwalbe
Marathon Plus tires. Clearance with the tire was minimal but sufficient.
There was interference with some of my panniers mounting hooks but others
had clearance. That's the only limitation I know of to mounting this on a
larger frame. IIRC correctly, Riv says up to 54 or so but that's
conservative, and narrower tires would give more clearance.

The difference between this one and the Rivendell version is the triangle
gussets at the corners where the vertical struts meet the platform on the
Riv version. Personally, I think this is a cleaner design, and the gussets
are over-kill. The gussets also limit pannier mounting options.

Your strong defense and quick handling skills have caused a turnover and
you are now driving to the hoop.

SALE PENDING.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it.

Hi All,

If Gabe's awesome used 58 Atlantis can sell, I hope this awesome new 56
Atlantis can also find a home here. I don't know Wildcat or anything; I
just hate to see an Atlantis go unclaimed. Hence this bump!

Thighs and knees seem to complain after 30-50 miles. I don't know what to
use for windstopping so the old legs will stay protected and warm.
Thinking of windstopper tights, but I feel there must be a cheaper
home-made, reliable remedy for this besides 75$-and-up cycling gear.

Maybe thicker wool long johns.

The gray/blue MUSA long pants would be great if they had some windstopping
stuff on the front, but then they would probably be over 100$ then.

Re: [RBW] For Sale-58cm Atlantis Frame/Fork/Headset

2014-11-13 Thread Aaron Young
RE: the 56 vs 58 Atlantis. I recently bought a used Atlantis. My PBH put
me right between both sizes and since there is a significant difference in
wheel size I waited till I had ridden both sizes before choosing. As far
as standover height, there really wasn't much difference (of course tires
could affect this a bit), but as expected there was just a little less on
the 58 with 700c wheels. Tire size there was "fattish", but not 50's or
anything. The 56 on the other hand had 2.15" 26ers and still had a bit
more standover.

Honestly, I think I would be happy on either frame size, but went for a 56
because in my imaginations I saw myself using the Atlantis more off road
than on and even doing some light single track. So went for 26er and more
standover. I'm happy with my decision, but with how much riding I have
been doing lately (more like haven't been doing) the frame size is really
moot! :)

Congrats to Bill it seems are in order.
