[RBW] WTB Non-black Medium MUSA Pants

2014-12-08 Thread Michael Ullmer
I've been wearing a pair of black MUSA pants on my commute everyday to work
and I'm loving them. Unfortunately, I've found that I tend to be wearing
these same pair of pants during non-work hours nearly every day of the
week, much to my wife's dismay. I thought I would switch it up a bit and
see if anyone had an older pair in another color in medium they want to get
rid of. Riv is out of stock on their website of other colors unfortunately.
Message me off the list if you have a pair that needs a home, thanks!

Sierra Trading Post usually has a good selection of wool/merino "tall"
socks. Many of them snowboard socks, so they can be on the warm side.
Filter the selection by "over the calf" to see the tall sock selection.

Manny, you guys would have fit right in on our San Diego S24O. We even
added the random element of darkness, pushing our bikes up a long muddy

everything got glopped up just like your photos. I had clods falling off
my brakes onto my bags. No pictures to prove anything happened,
unfortunately, and a lot fell off riding home the next day. Loads of good

Re: [RBW] Re: Mudfest

2014-12-08 Thread Johan Larsson
Yes, I thought of the Albastache but couldn't quite get the shape to fit. I
guess it can be because of distortion due to the lens and angle it's shot
at in the flickr picture. I was about to order an Albastache bar last
winter, but while I was waiting for reply on availability, the old
Bridgestone poster I wanted to order at the same time sold out :'( and I
couldn't justify the shipping costs for a small order.

[RBW] knicker socks

2014-12-08 Thread Ron Mc
people who have asked about merino wool socks to wear with their knickers,
sierratradingpost has Falke Tiago in stock. With today's coupon code,
they're $14. CPR65516
They are lightweight, but just right for knickers and a brisk above
freezing ride.
I usually start off morning rides, and take shorty socks for when I warm
up, but Sunday's ride, high 40s, humid and overcast, I kept mine on for 25
fast miles and they were perfect.

Like a moustache, put possibly an albastache. Riv discontinued the
moustache, but the albastache is available from them:
http://www.rivbike.com/Nitto-Handlebars-s/107.htm

Here they are directly compared:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/13768392265/in/photolist-n31Bt9-nBtfqh-n2YQmZ-mYEARB-nDdYDD-mUZTJa-mYEBkx-nnRWEt-n15htR-n15n9v-n174pu-n173Vd

I love the albastache. The moustache is narrower than I like, but it's
great too.

[RBW] Re: Speaking of Stem Shifters...

2014-12-08 Thread Johan Larsson
Uh, just came to think of something... those old Sun Tour shifters have a
rather coarse ratchet mechanism. Many times the stepping in between stops
in the ratchet does not allow for a good enough fine tuning of the position
of the chain for a nine-speed system, and you can't get the chain in line
of the cog just right. That can happen with the new and modern ratchet
shifters as well, but rarely.

I guess you'll need something like a moped throttle cable for those
shifters, it looks like they are made for some small barrel nipples that
are not used nowadays on bikes. Moped/motorcycle parts shops could possibly
also have loose slip-over barrels that could fit "good enough" on a
standard bike shifter cable.

And they probably do pull enough cable for a nine-speed Shimano derailer.
If you have a bike with a nine-speed shifter, it easy to measure how much
cable is moving in between gears 1-9 - remove the rear wheel, shift to 9
and then just pull any end of the outer cable and measure how much it
moves. I think it's about 20 mm. Then you can just use a piece of string to
see how much pull your old shifters manage.

So, BB cups always (on British threaded BBs) unscrew toward the FRONT of

And crank bolts are always lefty-loosey? Wrench rotates toward the back of

Scott,

As an aside, do you have pics of how you mounted the edelux upside-down on
the Nitto Big Rack?

[RBW] Re: Help our SOs! Gift Ideas

2014-12-08 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Another set of tires? Maybe you need knobbies for the bike or expensive
Compass offering?
On a less pricey level, maybe try the ultralight Schwalbe inner tubes?

Soaps and goops good-- Kookabura (sp?), shave cream is nice, clove and/or
anise soaps. Phil hand cleaner works magically.

Maybe a nice wrench (Eldi or Y-wrench)?

Riv's organic long sleeve shirts feel nice. I got the BBH cheapo
logo-mistake, and what a deal! My SO's borrowed it, so there's that. The
"Rivendell" one is nice, too.

I love me some clean bars. I tend to migrate all over 'em.

Except that you should insert the left side ring before you tighten the
right side, but not insert it so much that the BB bottoms out at
tightening, then tighten the left.

And if they're chasing the threads why not spend a minute to face the shell
also? It's a matter of seconds to put on the facing cutters and continue
when the threads have been chased. It's pretty easy to remove paint in the
BB threads which in practice is what they're doing in the video, but I
personally would really appreciate the shell being faced since it takes a
specialized and expensive tool to do that. It's so little more work, but a
huge quality gain. I don't get it.
