[RBW] Re: Winter Welcome Wagon [Share Your Pics]

2015-02-08 Thread Takashi
I have been super lazy for months, but finally got around to installing a
new pair of fenders on my Hunqapillar.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/sets/72157650693988781/

With my winter tires (Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro 29 x 2.25), clearances are
small, so I had to file off some bits from front fender, and also cut the
rear fender into two.
I am pretty much satisfied with the result, but maybe I will have to ride
slow at first to make sure that it's safe to ride with knobby tires and
fenders.

[RBW] Re: Winter Welcome Wagon [Share Your Pics]

2015-02-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Takashi that Hunq looks great! I love that grey-red color scheme and the
fenders really set it off. So far my XO3's readiness had exceeded my own
willingness with the winter commuting. Lots of 30ish degree with mixed
precipitation... I've got work travel over the next couple weeks to so by the
time I get back I think the studded tires will be coming off. (Or maybe I'm too
optimistic!)

[RBW] Re: Front end shimmy.

2015-02-08 Thread Andy.M
Doug and I have talked about shimmy a bit involving our respective Atlanti
(mine is a 56cm with 26" wheels) and it seemed that in both our experience
that a high rear load equates to a shimmy. To me, when loaded, the
Atlantis rides the most stable with a low front load. For overnighters I
usually keep the big saddle bag on the rear rack (which is there
permanently and I deal with the slight shimmy if I make a big market trip)
and front paniers. With more low weight in the front the ride is smooth as
glass.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front end shimmy.

2015-02-08 Thread Richard
A needle bearing headset seems to help with shimmy but isn't a cure all. I
experienced a violent shimmy even with this headset. I was riding downhill and
hit a patch of sand on the asphalt. It was a OMG, I sure I'm gonna wreck,
experience.

I was lucky and rode out the shimmy. Afterwards I stopped to compose myself and
to check the bike out.I was sure something was seriously wrong, but couldn't
find anything. While it was happening I thought for sure a tire had blown out,
but my tire pressure seemed fine. I tightened the headset a little, counted my
blessings, and rode home.

The bike I was riding has standard diameter, thin-walled tubing and is
optimized for carrying a load up front. My Acorn Boxy Rando bag was carrying
about 6lb.

I haven't experienced front end shimmy since. Hope I never do.

+1. That has been my experience, too, on Heron Road bikes (700C as spec'd
and 650B converted), Quickbeam, and Bleriot Protovelo. I recently mounted a
Tubus Targa low rider rack on my Protovelo and did my usual commute with
front panniers instead of my typical Lowsaddle Longflap / Boxy Bag
handlebar combo (most the weight in the saddle bag). The handling was
remarkably improved. The very shallow head angle of the Bleriot creates a
large amount of wheel flop. Low mounted panniers had an amazing dampening
effect.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around the notion that 10-20 extra pounds
on the saddle could induce shimmy. If it was just that, then someone 10-20
pounds heavier than I am should create the same effect. So, I hypothesize
it has something to do with the saddlebag load not being firmly attached.
Physicists feel free to pile on.

[RBW] Minor Handlebar Obsession

2015-02-08 Thread Jay Norman
After eagerly awaiting the possible arrival of the Clem Smith, a beautiful,
lightly used, lugged '93 XO2 frame materialized before my eyes on a popular
online auction site. So I put our resident on-line bidder expert to work on
the job (wife) and before it knew it, the frame was in our living room!
Great job honey! Anyway I've been gathering parts slowly, dirt drop stem,
Albastache bars, new synergy/vintage xt wheels, brooks B17, etc and it's
almost ready for the buildup, but I've been back and forth on the H bars.
Original mustache then Albastache, then back again trying by costing up
and down the street crankless etc. After not being totally sold on either
at this point I'm now thinking Albatross. Only thing is I'm not ready to
give up my road levers on the bends as i road original mustache for many
years but want elevate my position. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if /
how the mountings of road break levers can be modified to fit onto an
Albatross bar and / or if the bend of the Albatross is even large enough to
make them workable? I was thinking if the mounting ring on the levers are
too large for the bars, i can shim them and make them work. if the
mountings are too small?? Anyway there is my obsession...has anyone tried
or explored this or am i over the bars on this? Would welcome any
thoughts. Thanks!

[RBW] Drilling head tube lug for internal wiring?

2015-02-08 Thread William!
I'm interested in running internal dynamo wiring, front to back, on my
Atlantis. There's already a good size hole in the BB shell, so I'm thinking
all I need to do is drill a hole in the downtube in the head tube lug.
Wiring would go up fork (the outside, held with twine or something), into
the new hole, down the downtube, out the BB shell and through a hole in the
rear fender, all the way around the fender inside it to a fender-mounted
light at the rear of the bike. That's the thinking, anyway.

Yes, I'm really thinking bout putting a hole in my beloved Atlantis. Anyone
done this and care to advise? Or perhaps you have a better idea?

[RBW] Drilling head tube lug for internal wiring?

2015-02-08 Thread lungimsam
Call RBW. They would know if it is safe or not.
You also may be voiding your frame's "un-warranty". So talk to RBW.

Idea: ask if it is ok to drill and braze on a tail light hole mount in the
seat tube. You could run a wire there and use the Compass Cycles tail light
they make for just that purpose.

If you see a Ram for sure, I would recommend having the police go with you to
the house, and have your proof of purchase receipt in hand, or some other proof
of ownership, or the "owner" might contest ownership.

Just go with the cops. Don't go knockin on the door or jumpin fences to steal
it back. I'm sure you know this already but just thought I'd put it out there
in case you didn't.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking of going with a raw clear powdercoat

2015-02-08 Thread Eric Norris
Downside would be that powdercoating doesn't protect against rust, unless you
apply a paint primer first.
Does Powder Coating prevent rust?

Powder Coating is durable and very long-lasting depending on its environment
and how the items are used. It is not, however, a rust prevention.
Pre-treatment and/or primer coating is required for longer coating life. All
exterior items should be primered and coated to fight corrosion.
http://www.commpowder.com/pages/faq%20page/faq_page.htm/

Your frame may rust under the clear powdercoat.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front end shimmy.

2015-02-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't have an Atlantis, but I've experienced shimmy on 2 of my Riv
customs (not on a 3d), both times starting to appear after years/miles of
riding them without a sign of the problem.

I have no idea what caused it, but among things that I did change " the
problem appeared were tires: from Turbos to Kojaks on the '03; from Paellas
to Turbos on the '94.

Other things that changed: Saddle ('94; Pro to Flite); fenders ('94, none
to some, Berthoud); drivetrain (both; free to fixed); dyne hubs ('94: none
to SON 28 to none; '03: non to SON 20R); and so on and so on.

Point being that, IME, any of a myriad of apparently little and apparently
very tenuously related things can cause it. I don't have shimmy on the
gofast.

It's not a huge problem for me, since I rarely ride no-hands.

What *I* want to know is how to stop cold weather squealing on salmon pads

[RBW] Shimano Shifters Serviceable ?

2015-02-08 Thread jandrews_nyc
Hi
I have some 8 speed Shimano Bar-End Shifters that have seen some pretty
rough usage.
They are currently mounted on Paul Thumbies.
I'd like to re-use them on my fresh S.H. build with Albas however, the rear
shifter isn't cooperating.
I can't really get the unit to switch over into index mode...it's sort of
stuck between that and friction.
As you can see from the photo, the plastic cover is cracked and gives way
when the wing nut is twisted.
Is there a way to completely break these down and rebuild them ..or are
they designed to not be serviceable?
Does anyone know if that plastic cover is replaceable? I can't find any
info about it online. Would love to not spend $80 or $90 on shifters.

Thanks
Jason

[RBW] Singletrack on the Fargo: el Pueblo de Corrales, nr ABQ, NM. No photos, sorry.

2015-02-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Nice, short (always!) ride in the Corrales (NM; bucolic incorporation
adjacent to ABQ with faux horse ranches and old adobes and singlewides
strung out along the bosque) -- in the Corrales, NM bosque singletrack. I'd
not ridden this for 8 years or so, and it was great fun.

70*F -- global warming, 'cuz that's very high for this time of year; the
cottonwoods don't drop all their leaves -- the leaves turn brown but stay
on the trees -- so the woods was less stark in appearance.

I rode behind my brother Peter, who is a more agressive handler than I, and
who also was on a 26-er, more nimble; I on the Fargo.

Tight, curling, brush-beset trails in the cottonwood forest; the sand,
thankfully, mostly packed due to our recent precipitation. Perfectly flat,
as the trail parallels the Big River, but tightly turning.

Lotsa horse shit. And horses -- some riders nice, one rider in particular a
b*tc*. We stopped and invited her to proceed; she went by muttering
epithets, and we replied in kind.

Peter, brother, not paying attention, came around a corner at speed and
bumped front wheels with another rider -- P slammed on his front brake and
did a very worthy save; his rear wheel flinging itself into the air some 3
feet. No one, nor no bike, hurt.

Sorry, no photos -- was too busy keeping up with P. But -- and here's my
point -- I was very very pleased with the balance and feel of the Fargo.
I've complained about it: on pavement, at least with fat, soft tires, the
turn-in is less than ideal: hesitation, then dive. It's not horrible, but
it is noticeable, especially when you are used to the seamless turn-in that
is a Rivendell signature.

But, despite my poor handling skills, I was very pleased to find that the
Fargo tracked corners very, very well and felt perfectly balanced -- much
more so than on pavement. I found myself braking in turns so as not to
overrun Peter.

I bumped pedals twice; the Fargo has a lower bb. But that apart, wonderful.

Duh! After all, the Fargo is meant to be a dirt road bike; but nonetheless
I was pleasantly surprised.

Fargo: set up with 44 cm B 135s ~2-3 cm above saddle; 38/24 X
13-14-15-16-17-18-20-23-27 and a LX fd and a road Microshift rd pulled by
Silver shifters.

Well, I had planned to run these 8-speed shifters on the Paul
thumbies...which lets me switch between index and fiction.
I'm usually in friction.
But since they aren't working, I've mounted some cheapie Falcon shifters
that I bought from Riv years ago. Haven't run the cables yet, but they
actually feel pretty good.
Still, I'd prefer to not just chuck the Shimano's in the trash...but it
looks like that may be the end result.

Thanks!

RE: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback

2015-02-08 Thread Noah Deuce
Two points:
1. Definitely use Orange Seal. I've had much better results for initial setup
with it than Stans; also, doesn't create boogers in your tires after time
(unlike Stans).

2. HED Belgium C2+ is another wide, rim braking rim that works well. More
expensive than the Pacentis, but I've had great results with, both tubed and
tubeless.

[RBW] 700C Tire suggestion for mixed terrain 200K on Redwood?

2015-02-08 Thread Noah Deuce
I'm another vote for the Gravel Grinder 700x38s. I've got a few hundred miles
of pavement and mixed surface on mine, they're still going strong. (I'll be
running a new pair at Dirty Kanza this year.)

[RBW] Re: Drilling head tube lug for internal wiring?

2015-02-08 Thread dougP
The Atlantis has 4 factory drilled holes on the DT for the water bottle
bosses. Surely the lugged HT area is pretty stout, and the wire doesn't
have be very big. I would assume any customer modifications like this void
any warranty.

As a point of reference and not to encourage you in any way, I performed
all manner of ham fisted butchery to my Atlantis fork, included TIG
welding, drilling, brazing & grinding things off to move them, and it
survived just fine (the metal, not the paint). Rivendells are not
delicate. YMMV.

[RBW] Re: Drilling head tube lug for internal wiring?

2015-02-08 Thread Jan Heine
Drilling a hole for a lighting wire should only void the warranty if that
is what causes the problem. So if your frame fails, and the crack clearly
started at the hole, you wouldn't want to make a warranty claim. But if
your frame fails where the downtube enters the bottom bracket shell, no
reputable company will claim that drilling a hole in the headlug somehow
caused that failure... (And Rivendell is a reputable company.)

It's interesting when I show around people who've never been inside a frame
shop. They are shocked at what they see – all the frame parts are
discolored from soaking off the flux. After brazing the frames get aligned
by yanking on them with brute force. To the untrained eye, it all looks
very rough. Yet the frames are stronger than what you could make in an
aseptically clean factory... So drilling a tiny hole in the headlug (away
from any stressed areas, of course) isn't a big deal.

Speaking of not aseptically clean factories, during a recent visit to
Panaracer, we got to meet quite a few of the engineers. It was very
encouraging to see that many had rubber stains on their shirts, indicating
that they actually made prototype tires and were involved in the making of
things! Same thing at Nitto... If you only get to meet the guys in suits
with clean hands, it always a bad sign!

[RBW] Re: Brake pads question.

2015-02-08 Thread Surlyprof
Last time I was at Rivendell, I bought the Yokozunas they sell in both
smooth and threaded (I needed threaded). Their spacers and cupped washers
were really easy to set up and adjust. When I was there, I noticed all the
brake pads were toed in to the front to keep them from squealing which is
the opposite from what I had always done in the past. Keven suggested that
I take a piece of sandpaper, fold it in half, place it in the back and
compress the brakes to get the angle. I combined that tip with Grant's
bike geek tip on the Blug about using a section of inner tube as a parking
brake. It was just the right pressure so I could align everything with the
brakes engaged and then crank them tight in position. I can't speak to
longevity of the pads but I have had no problems with squealing brakes
since.
