2015-03-27 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
It's been a few years, but we never touched 'em until the bike was sold.
Most were supplied with an appropriate set of spacers so you didn't have
to. IIRC, if there was more than an inch or so left to spacer-ize, that
was rare. They were generally supplied with a specific tube length from
the manufacturer. They weren't supplied "full" length as you would find
with a fork only.

I haven't touched either in person, so, I can't say with confidence. But, I
keep calculating out the geometries on these too, and I think the only
thing that really makes the Clem seem more laid back and cruiserish is just
that it's how they keep building them. The frame angles are pretty much
identical. The head tube might be just a bit more slack, but it's hard to
tell since the margin for error when calculating these things from
measurements is outside the .5 degree range that matters. The biggest
difference is that the Clem has a 1-2cm longer top tube and the longer
chainstays. Those don't have to mean cruiser/town. Heck, it looks like the
reach from the sit point of the saddle to the stem on the 52cm demo bike
built as a townie is exactly the same as on my current camping bike
converted from an old road frame with a standard touring stance, despite
the old bike I'm using having a much, much shorter top tube. So, I think
just looking at the geometries on the frame it ought to be plenty flexible
for uses outside just being a cruiser/townie style. Probably still a little
more laid back about it, but with a short reach stem and saddle forwards I
don't think it'll be that much different. Mostly it just seems like a
longer, cheaper Hunq. Heck, that's how I've started thinking about it as I
compare the geometries. The poor man's Hunq.

I did the best I could to compare the Hunq and Clems at similar sizes. If
both of them are running the same size cranks (and since they have the same
pedals and /those/ sized to match correctly, I feel they are), this should
be a mostly accurate comparison of the two geometries at roughly comparable
sizes. It's closer than you'd think seeing them built up as differently as
they are.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-27 Thread ian m
The Hunqapillar is an off-road tourer meets mountain bike. To me the Clem
seems like the perfect budget/production version of the same concept. Long
chainstays/wheelbases have been popular on off road bikes since their
inception and are good for stability on descents and, depending on who you
ask, just fine for climbing. In my opinion the Hunq is the early Breezer or
Ritchey to the Clem's early Stumpjumper. I for one fully plan on riding my
Clem with bullmoose bars and rock & road tires and not as an upright townie

if so, what were your impressions?

How do you determine where to cut the steerer tubes on your threadless floor
model road bikes when assembling?

Is there a standard human bar height that works for everyone shops go by? Do
you cut them higher for LHTruckers and other touring models?

My local shops cut low but sometimes they do some a little higher than usual.
Was wondering. With RBW bikes, we have slot of options with quill stems.

"For some reason I was able to make myself pay for it for a school project,

You've got your priorities straight. An admirable school project, focusing
on a single problem (corrosion). Bike drivetrains have a lot more going on
that can also cause wear, i.e., lubrication, cleanliness, riding
environment, etc. A highly corrosion resistant chain may not outlast a
less resistant one if for instance lubrication & cleanliness control life.
I've never even thought about corrosion but I don't live where they salt
the roads. Heck, it doesn't even rain enough around here.

"Peroxide, salt & vinegar". That sounds pretty nasty without thinking
about the chemical reactions. That's must have been a fun project for
her.

[RBW] Re: Ram as a light tourer-your experiences?

2015-03-27 Thread Fullylugged
The Mark's rack with P clamps lets you put a small bag on the front of a
Ram. It's really not designed for a heavy bag so a bar tube is usually what
I put there. It's long chainstays and low BB make it a comfy rider and it
has very stable handling. A very good all day light tourer or brevet bike.
Mine has 12k miles on it and I rode it in the hills of NW GA twice this
week.

Re: [RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?

2015-03-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
My daughter did her 5th grade science project on rust proofed bike chains.
We bought her a bunch of new chains (including a Wipperman) and cut them
into lengths for her to do all kinds of mean things to them. The coated
4NRTH brand did pretty well. The Wipperman was also excellent. The worst
stuff we came up with was a mix of peroxide, salt and vinegar. I've still
never ridden with a Wipperman. For some reason I was able to make myself
pay for it for a school project, but can't pull the trigger for riding.

2015-03-27 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Now that sounds like fun. I'm mostly an in city commuter skirting broken
glass, joggers, and folks using their cellphones while driving. Thankfully
I do get out of the city every so often (and really, it isn't so bad living
Hawaii...I mean someone's got to do it, right?).

I'll be out by the dried horse print divots next the first weekend in April
when I go for my first camping trip of the year.

To keep this on track I'm deciding between a 32 and 36 spokes for the ride,
and the frame the comes with them. :-)

Oh, I cheat big time with a 32/19 and a 32/22 bail out. The 32/22 will be
the Pikes Peak gear should I go that route. It's all paved, and the
Hunqapillar's Smart Sams are just not fun on pavement while the QB's MSO's
are fantastic. I'm just concerned what happens with wind and altitude above
treeline. That last 2,000 feet is the hardest part of the 7,000 foot climb.
I need to put in more climbs and longer rides first, then I'll see. I'm not
cocky yet. Grin.

[RBW] Re: Tips for Quick beam for long, mountain rides

2015-03-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
I cheated and it was nearly all paved, but I did 70 miles on the Quickbeam
today, to Deckers, then 6 miles North along the Platte (back to where we
camped a few night ago). Just using basic math I averaged 11-12 mph, which
is pretty good given the climbing involved. The section along the Platte
river is dreamy. Just meandering along with the river realitively flat
either way. What a blast! I haven't felt this good on that ride ever, so I
must be doing something right. Grin. Perhaps I'll get cocky and give Pikes
Peak another go on the QB later this year. Grin.

Photos start here and go for a total of four progressing
left: https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/16741137817/

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Velo Orange "Yard" Sale 3/28

2015-03-27 Thread Minh
Details here, http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2015/03/yard-sale-preview.html

For those in the DC area, from my experience the heavily discounted stuff
goes right away (i.e. you need to be in line when they open). They also
sometimes sell non-VO items, the last one i went to there was a full set of
Nitto touring racks (i guess these are things they use to prototype their
own products). Of course each one is hit and miss on items, though they
are also giving 15% off on in-person, in-stock purchases too if you need to
pick up something.

I've missed the last few ones, but they have some pictures up, and at a
minimum it's a nice excuse to get out to Annapolis. A little too early to
visit Cantler's for crabs but you have a few options downtown.

Let us know if you pick up something good! Not as amazing as an RBW garage
sale, but no plane flight to California either!

Re: [RBW] The aftermath of my recent car vs. bike hit and run.

2015-03-27 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
That's truly horrible; both your experience in being hit and the bad
actor's behavior after the collision. I expect that (assuming the driver
was insured) there should be no problems in your being fully compensated to
the limit of his policy--but I do not know the company or the locale, so
don't take my word for it. Document absolutely everything insofar as you
can. Every cut, scrape, and bruise. The hospital records are important,
but so is whatever you can produce. And (like a zillion people haven't
already told you this!) take your time getting back to work and riding.

Re: [RBW] The aftermath of my recent car vs. bike hit and run.

2015-03-27 Thread David Spranger
I was riding to work early on last Friday morning. My usual route. Nothing
unusual at all precipitating the event. I have no memory of the event
itself. What I know I have pieced together from eyewitness reports and
police reports.

I was traveling around ten mph up a hill on a arterial road that is labeled
at 35mph. A Ford Winstar came up behind me moving higher than 55 mph.
Though there was a clear lane he could have moved into, he instead plowed
through me as if I was not there. Eyewitnesses state he carried my body on
his hood and partially embedded in his windshield approximately 90 feet
before coming to a stop and allowing my body to fall off his vehicle. This
was directly in front of a very busy city bus stop with eyewitnesses that
are used to seeing me every day pass this bus stop on my bicycle. He then
changed lanes to not run me directly over as he sped away.

He later reported an incident in which he said the damages to his car were
caused by boxes falling off a truck. Of course modern forensics and
on-the-ball police officers knew better and immediately arrested him.

[RBW] WTT: Atlantis 61 CM for Rambouillet 60 or 58 CM

2015-03-27 Thread Dave C
I am have a 2003/2004-era Toyo-built Atlantis with a fairly standard build
(Sugino XD triple crank, Shimano barcons, 46 cm Noodle, Mavic 719
wheelset). I can't tour anytime soon, I really just need a road bike with
some decent tire clearance. So I am interested in swapping with someone's
Rambouillet (or Roadeo, I suppose). The bike is in great shape, with
scratches on the right chainstay from a couple chain-suck incidents and a
few scratches on the top tube. No dents, no problems. I can furnish
pictures.

If you yearn to tour, or you want a bike with wider tire clearances, and
you are up for considering a trade, let me know. I can get far more
specific about components and other matters in a private conversation.

chainrings a few years ago, and it was widely reported to wear off quickly.

I properly lubricated chain should be able to resist corrosion well enough.
They all wear out at about the same rate, in my experience.

[RBW] Re: My Winter Projects

Thanks Clayton and Soren... yeah the large ones are indeed hard to find.
Varusteleka has some nice medium-sized surplus bags, which should make for
nicely-sized overnighters, or possibly front panniers. These remind me of
the Carradice C bags.

Hugh, thanks. And, I would love to tour in your part of the country.
Anne, you summed it up well,
Chris, thanks and enjoy your S24O. I will be looking for the usually array of

Edwin, we found that adding the kids friends make the trips more enjoyable for
them and reduces some sibling friction as well. The bandannas were to cut the
wind on their face and transitioned to gangster/bandit fun. It certainly added

Re: [RBW] WTB (or trade for): rear hub

2015-03-27 Thread Tim Gavin
No, thank you. They're attractive hubs but their noise bothers me like few
things do. Seriously, I'm a very chill person but I find noisy hubs very
irritating.

Also for trade:
Phil Wood freewheel / Synergy wheel set, or just the hubs (new bearings all
around). Rear wheel has a small dent in the sidewall (as mentioned) that
I'm going to try to carefully straighten. Handbuilt by me with DT
revolution spokes. OC rear rim + Phil FW hub = less than 1 mm of dish.

[RBW] WTB (or trade for): rear hub

2015-03-27 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm looking for a rear hub. Let me know what spares you have, or if you
know of a great deal.

130 mm OLD
8/9/10 speed cassette freehub
36 hole
Silver body
Quiet pawls (no loud "angry bee" hubs)

I'd like something high quality; I'm currently riding the Phil freewheel
hub original to my '97 Riv and it's butter-smooth (with new bearings).

I will build it up with a new Pacenti PL23 rim. I keep denting Synergy OC
rims (2 since September, the cheapo ZAC19 I had before was dent free).

I see my new options as:
White Industries T11 or MI5 ~$325
Paul RHUB ~$325 (noisy?)
Phil Wood ~$410
Velo Orange Grand Cru Touring ~$110
Ultegra 6700 ~$100
105 5500 ~$55

Any other good options? What do I gain (besides MUSA) by going with the
Paul or White Industries vs. the Ultegra or Grand Cru? Are any of the ones
I listed noisy, and I don't know it yet? Also, anyone know a great price
for spokes? Best I see is ~$.80 per (in quantities of 50 or 100).

Items I offer in trade:
Nitto Big Front rack (excellent condition)
Sackville Trunksack Large Olive (good condition)
Revelate Tangle frame bag, Large (brand new)
Nitto Moustache bars, Dirt Drop 8 stem, and Dia-compe non-aero brake levers
Campagnolo Athena 9-speed (old) Ergo brake/shifters -- good hoods, work
great, come with free Race Triple RD if wanted (free b/c it has a crack in
the mount knuckle). These index shift 9 speed Campy or 7 speed whatever
(set up on a freewheel currently). Works fine with a triple, Race Triple
FD also available.

Thanks!

[RBW] Reasonably priced rust-resistant chain?

2015-03-27 Thread Jim Bronson
Anyone tried one of these?

http://kmcchain.us/chain/x9ept-eco-proteq/

Claims to withstand 650 hours of salt spray. Which, is about what my
chains have to deal with because I sweat on the chain and front derailer
quite a lot, living in Austin, Texas, in the summertime. Some might say
the surface rust is harmless but I don't care for the rusty chain aesthetic.

This particular more than the standard 9 speed XMC X9.93 or SRAM 951 chains
that I normally use, but not exorbitantly so. Found online starting at $23
through a Google Shopping search.

There is also the Wippermann stainless, but those things are pretty dear,
even online. This seems more reasonable. That is, if it works.

[RBW] The aftermath of my recent car vs. bike hit and run.

2015-03-27 Thread Paul
David, adding my well wishes and prayers for a complete recovery.

It's sounding pretty positive for that happening from what you shared.
I hope your pain during recovery is minimal.

I expect most if us think about something like this could happen to us.

Riding defensively is on my mind a lot as I am sure on all you folks minds as
well.

Even with that mindset the inattentive, distracted or impaired driver's are out
there and sometimes even all our precautions do not prevent something like this
from happening.

I also hope this person is discovered and held accountable for what they have
done.

God bless and enable you to heal quickly.

[RBW] Re: Alternative Frame Pump Mounting.

2015-03-27 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
I had always carried frame pumps either under the top tube or along the
front of the seat tube, but my most recent build involved DT shifters and a
shortish head tube, so under the TT seemed inadvisable. But I wanted to
keep the second bottle cage (I hardly ever use it, but on events, it's
worth having). Fortunately, there was *just* enough room between the rear
fender and the seat tube to an hPX. Initially, I cobbled together an
umbrella clip to hold the end of the handle and put the pump head down on
the chainstays just aft of the BB. Last year, I picked up an old campy
"arrow" type clip, that is more secure for the top. And I'm considering
putting some kind of padding down on the stays, though I expect anything
down there will get filthy, and I should just use a rubber bag of some sort
to cover the pump head.

I'm glad you're mostly intact. If you recall the details of the hit and
run, I would be interested in hearing them. I have been hit several times,
but never H&R'd.

Take it easy with the recovery. I had a hip replaced a few years ago due
an incident, and it took me significantly longer to get full recovery than
was typical for scheduled hip replacement surgery. I don't know if that's
common, due to the trauma, or what, but it was my experience (I was
fortunate in that it was a relatively low-speed event, and the rest of the
damage was confined to my ankle and elbow.).
