I like their philosophy statement. We've heard it before but I think it

Love this line from their "About" section: "July 1st, 2011 We are

[RBW] Re: Canti-Rom

2015-04-10 Thread Dave Johnston
The Rom's and Rams are awesome they have a nice sport touring geometry so
they feel like a nice neutral road bike. It's hard to find a canti equiped
bike that can handle 35mm tires that doesn't feel like a hybrid or Touring
bike. I wish my Ram had come with canti's, I like the power and feel better
and there is more clearance for fenders.

[RBW] Where is Clem?

2015-04-10 Thread Edwin W
Where is Clem?
Why is this bike hard to find?
Does Rivendell REALLY want to pre-sell it?

Because if you go to the website, you will not see it, unless you type,
"Clem" into the search box.
It is not on the homepage.
It is not under Bike Models.
It is not under New and Good.
It is not under web specials.
It is not under promotional.

So if you are on this list or a friend of someone on this list, you may
have heard of it and go to the site and type in "Clem" and find it and
pre-buy it, otherwise, how would you?

Maybe through BB&H?

It is a cool business model, if you take "cool" to mean: not many people
know about it, under-the-radar kind of thing. And we all like those, don't
we.

Yours in the Clem-shibboleth,

Edwin

[RBW] Coolest cycling cap?

2015-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Idle subject, but when I walked into the library to pick up my daughter
just now, as she was chatting with a friend, she started weighing in about
the Rivendell cap (cycling, please, I don't wear baseball caps) and how
dorky it is. (Her friend said it was "cool".) She also publicly denigrated
the cute li'l yellow custom caps I have from LittlePacketdotcom, with their
custom-attenuated brims (can't see out under regular cycling cap brims
unless I fold them back by half an inch). I had been thinking about my
favorite caps, and I have to say that my own personal favorites have been
the ever-on-sale "retro" caps sold by Nashbar -- I have Molteni, BP, and
one other I can't now remember; it advertises "chrome cassettes" --
remember those?) and, of course the coolest of the cool is the Molteni one.
(The only cooler one would be a Teve Blad cap; alas, I outgrew my Teve Blad
jersey. $1 to the first one to identify this name in its current context.)

Can anyone beat this coolness?

The Nashbar caps are indeed well made and, if I fold up the brim and add
elastic, they work well.

Patrick Moore, idling away this Orthodox Good Friday afternoon in ABQ, NM,
who long ago swore he'd never use the word "cool" again.

Three out of four peddlers will be peddling Rivendells. Only three out of
six riders will be on Rivendells though, as the two wee ones will be on my
wife's Bike Friday. But, yes, we'll post pictures when the herd is brought
together in its new home. Bike Friday arrives early June. It is a cargo/kid
bike that fits on a roof bike rack and weighs 44 pounds with all the
accessories for kids and cargo. Made the in USA, lifetime warrantee on the
frame. That ain't bad!

With abandon,

Patrick, you might also want to take a look at the cycletrucks.com

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for cycling video cameras?

2015-04-10 Thread lungimsam
I would like to start taking some vids of rides because everything looks so
beautiful and would be fun to show others.

What can be helmet mounted that works good? Nice color, clarity, and loads
easily onto your desktop. Lightweight. No distortion.
I am guessing that helmet mounting makes for the smoothest, less jarring
videos.

Thanks for your ideas.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for helmet mounted rear view mirrors?

2015-04-10 Thread lungimsam
I use one of those small mirrors that sticks to the inside of the glasses
lens. I like them a lot but sometimes a little fussy to adjust.

Was wondering what works good helmet mounted and has a nice mirror, not
something that looks like a sheet of sticky-backed silver duct tape, but an
actual mirror.

Thanks for your ideas.

[RBW] xd2 triple to double/bb question

2015-04-10 Thread drew beckmeyer
thinking about buying Christian's wide low xd2 to replace a perfectly fine
triple xd2 (featuring an unused big ring) on my hunqapillar that is
currently set up with a 113 bottom bracket. were i to do this, would i
need a different length bb? i think this would work, but i just want to
make sure that going from a 36t middle to a 40t on in the same spot on the
widelow wont be too close to the chainstay.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for cycling video cameras?

2015-04-10 Thread Eric Norris
I use the Garmin VIRB for my videos. Very nice camera that provides for a
variety of mounts, including helmet-mounted.

A word of caution regarding helmet-mounted cameras: You have to train yourself
to use them. It’s normal to move your head around as you’re riding—see
something to your right, and your head will turn that way. Recorded by a video
camera, all of that movement is quite distracting. That’s why I prefer a bike
mount (on the handlebars) or handheld. You *can* do helmet-mounted video, but
you have to concentrate on keeping your head pointed in more or less the same
direction while you’re filming (or moving it very slowly). Try it sometime—it’s
harder than you think.

Lots of bike-mounted and handheld video in my latest offering:

Re: [RBW] xd2 triple to double/bb question

2015-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I swapped my Fargo's X2D 46/36/24 rings for Guard/38/24, keeping the same
113 mm Phil. The new outer, formerly the middle, was in the --- middle! So
it remained where it ought to be.

I didn't even change the position of the FD; it works fine -- tho' the
entire point of the exercise was to have a drivetrain that needs shifting
to the granny only in emergencies; iow, I don't shift the ring hardly a
tall.

That said, I could probably get by with a 108 but then, the 46/36/24 could
have gotten by with a 108, too.

For the record, the 113 Phil came off the Sam Hill, which first had the
XD2; the Phil replaced another, less chi chi bb that was also a 113. A 108
would work with X2D on both frames.

Off the record, but in case it's of interest: the triple pulled a compact
(small cog = 16) 7 with the 46 being the principal ring, while the double
pulls a closer ratio 9 (small cog 13).

[RBW] xd2 triple to double/bb question

2015-04-10 Thread Joe Bernard
You should be able to eyeball it by estimating how much larger a ring with 4
more teeth would be. If there's plenty of distance now, I wouldn't worry, but
if you're already cutting it close with the 36 then you'll need a 115 BB. I
would buy the cranks first and ease it onto the spindle to see if it's going to
be an issue. You'll know right away if cranking down on the bolt is going to
push it too close to the chainstay.

Go to the Blug first, then click Shop. This takes you to the newest items in
descending chronological order. There's probably another way to get there, but
this had been my habit with rivbike.com for ages: Check for new comments on the
Blug, then click over to see if there's any new items. The Complete Clem
Pre-Sale (and a lovely used Atlantis in my size!) is there.

[RBW] Re: Where is Clem?

2015-04-10 Thread Zed Martinez
They're in the Clem Smith section. But, they still say to check back on
4/6. They haven't reopened them after asking the first-wavers if they
wanted to upgrade to a full build or not. So, right now, you still can't
preorder one again. They're supposed to be back up... sometime soon. They
were also on the homepage last time. I don't think they're in the bike
models yet because it's a weird way before they expected to be ready
pre-announcement. Will probably be there eventually, but yes, as it is the
preorder kinda is really aimed at the regulars who follow the Blug and get
the emails more so than the casual site browsers it seems.
