[RBW] Re: Great ride and failure to help
Patrick, Good for you for trying to help, it's not surprising that you did! I managed to ride for several years in similar kit, but did know to carry a spare tube In Addition to CO2. It's amazing how much stuff fits into those jersey pockets. Sometimes felt kind of bulky back there, though. I was lucky to have few flats. I now prefer my Kevin's bag and frame pump. Joe, try a Miata. Pretty much the best of both (automotive) worlds. You get in, drive, have a blast. No worries. [RBW] Re: VO Sabot pedal reviews needed, please.
I tried two pair of Sabot pedals on my QB when I first got it. Both pair began creaking after just a few rides. I can't remember what VO said the issue was, but their customer service was great! (they refunded my money -- Mike, I'd definitely contact them and tell them of your experience). I got them because they look like an ideal barefoot pedal, and they weren't bad. The VP Vice pedal is thinner and thus gives greater road and trail obstacle clearance and feels the same underfoot as the Sabot -- a bit of a surprise to me. The Sabot pins are rounded on top, which does not give aggressive grip on the pin side (I remove the pins on the barefoot side). When I'm shod it's often because it is wet/cold and the extra grip is fantastic and roughly equal to the feel of the grip of being barefoot (being barefoot provides a lot of grip, and amazing pedal feel/connection). All in all, I'm so happy with the VP Vice I do not see a reason to pursue the search further. [RBW] Re: 2015 JBL Haleiwa Metric Century
So I did the Haleiwa Metric Century this past Sunday and I had a great ride. I used my Quickbeam again as it's the perfect bike for the ride. I'm pretty pleased with how things turned out. The day was a bit overcast and rain was forecasted for later in day, but the word was that it would be dry during the ride. I'd opted to take the charted bus to the ride as I don't have car to drive there and this year I wasn't going with anyone. I woke up at 3:30 AM (which isn't a big stretch, I'm up at 4:30 AM most days) and had a nice little ride a couple of miles to the pickup point at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park. That at least got my blood moving a bit. Getting on the yellow school buses with our bikes was a lesson in applied geometry. We more or less failed on the way out and did great on the way back. Figures. I hadn't eaten breakfast other than some fatty coffee and I was packing a few hard boiled eggs and string cheese, no carbs today thank you. We arrived at Kaiaka Bay Beach park some time later, the sun was up, and there was a line for the kibos. Seems the restroom were under renovation. Having done a couple of RAGBRAIS this is situation normal. I saw a couple of fun bikes including a new Bike Friday Haul-a-Day, a folding longtail. I own a New World Tourist (and it's been RBW, twice), so that was fun. Mostly the bikes were mix of carbon fiber racy things and more comfortable flat barred bikes, mountain bikes, a couple of fixies, and not another Riv in site. It was time to go and off we went. This ride, like many, was broken in groups, fast first, slow last. I was somewhere in the middle. I left at a good clip, one that felt comfortable and maintainable. The Quickbeam was in good tune, tires just right, nothing much creaking or clicking. I've got two time lapse videos, one out, one back. I took them with a little HTC Re camera on my bars. It's not a great camera by any means, but as I got it for half price it's okay. The time lapses are set for one every five minutes. Out: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/17294741335/in/set-72157652232821875 Back: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/17106979568/in/set-72157652232821875 All Stuff: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157652232821875/with/17106979568/ Okay, here's the scoop on my ride. Last time I did this ride, in April of 2013, I probably weighed 260 pounds and I had a bad hip. The hip would be replaced in April of 2014, actually the day after the 2014 version of this ride - though I didn't ride. This Sunday when I rode, I was 197. In 2013 the ride took about 5.5 hours, this time it took just under 4 hours. I really don't think I was putting out more energy, I just didn't have to move as much mass. As long as I'm on the subject, I should note that besides the coffee I didn't eat anything. I rode the first half of the ride non-stop (not something I would normally do, I like to stop and chat, and such when I ride). I ate a couple of hard boiled eggs at the halfway point, but honestly, I wasn't hungry nor did I feel like I was bonking at any point. Then it was time for the ride back. This half was a few minutes slower as the wind had picked up a bit and until I turned the corner from the windward side to the north shore. I did take a pit stop this time about halfway to the finish. After Waimea Bay the weather started socking in a bit and I could see showers in the distance, but it was still very pleasant. I began to watch the clock a bit and saw that there was a chance I'd be in before noon. I figured it was not going to happen, but I kept pedaling. At fifteen minutes to noon I had a feeling I might make it if there was no traffic in Haleiwa. There wasn't. That left just the road to Kaiaka Park...it was longer than I recalled and I was sure I'd missed the mark. Nope, I made it in 2 minutes before noon. That was by far the fastest I've ever done this many miles. Actually I'll take that back, I rode down Haleakala last year, about 36 miles downhill (there is one short, very minor climb, but the rest is down, down down). That was faster. The day wasn't over as it turned out. As I was hydrating a bit and wiping off the salt a woman approached me and said she'd seen me come in. She was pleased, she said, to see me as I was dressed in 'normal' clothes and my bike, the Quickbeam with Albas, fenders, a dynohub, and front and rear olive TrunkSacks, was definitely comfortable looking. Turns out she's read Just Ride. Her bike ethic is pretty similar and she, like me is a daily commuter. We ended up chatting till it was time for the bus, chatted on the bus, and went for coffee when we got back to Honolulu. After a two hour coffee break we rode partway home together till it was time to go our separate ways. Thanks Riv! Many folks have commented on how nice my Quickbeam and my Hunq look, but this was the first time they'd ever gotten me an afternoon coffee and riding date. :-) So that's my 2015 JBK Haleiwa Metric Century. I had a great time.

[RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost
I found out by sheer accident that Frame Saver in the seat tube in contact with the seatpost make it very difficult to move ! I have Salsa Shaft(matte finish black) on the Bombadil and it is really long , so long that it came in contact with the Frame Saver I had applied in the ST . I could barely get in . I immediately checked the post to make sure it really was 27.2 , and it was . The seat tube is 27.2 for sure, as I had a Campy seatpost in it prior. I squirted some Boeshield on a rag and rubbed it around the top part of the tube to diminish to stickiness of the Frame Save and now I can at least move the post a bit easier . So Frame Saver may work for someone looking for a anti friction kind of solution while still preserving and protecting the steel . -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: VO Sabot pedal reviews needed, please.
I recall seeing a photo somehwere of the thin gripsters and the VP-001 and some other pedals . Thin Gripsters are not wide at all, just long fore/aft . In looking at pedals recently . . . I have noticed that pedals measurements vary . The fore/aft is for the whole platform, so BMX style paralleogram type the actual will be much less than listed. The width however is a free-for-all. Some measure it from the crank arm, from inside the axle threads to the outside body. Others measure the body alone. So is the VO Sabot 100mm width for just the platform, or from the inside axle(the total width from the inside crank arm when installed) ? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. more than twice I've loaned my pump to roadies on the roadside. It's always a pleasant conversation. If we get back to the original problem it becomes a question of people buying into an image that's being sold, compounded by peer pressure, since the lion's share of group rides are built around the bike shops doing the selling. Re: [RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost
My Sam's post did the same thing. I used a snap punch to create a grid of punches about a centimeter wide in the area of the clamp. Punches were about 2-3 mm apart. After a bit of sanding with some fine sandpaper the fit got just about perfect. I wound up with some of the scratching exposed, not real attractive but functional. I spent about an hour on this. Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Road Standard, whole bike or f/f - Near-New
Hi Erl, Thanks for your comments. Yes, as we all know, part of the fun of bicycles is in selecting parts, which is one reason why I prefer to sell the whole Rivendell and not just the frame and fork. Re: [RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost
My Gunnars are three for three on slipping seat posts (and also 3/3 on chipping paint). I'm not overwhelmed by Waterford's quality. Dear Eric, Interesting. I've not messed with Gunnars, but I've built up/owned eight waterford-built products since 1998 (a Heron, two lugged road bikes, four TIG-welded Boulder Bicycle prototypes, and one production TIG welded Allroad (on the stand right now). I've never had a slipping seatpost. Their paint has gotten better. My Waterfords chipped badly and with little provocation. My road-going Boulder Bicycle has done well (other than the chip at the top tube dent, but that had a metal beam dropped on it--not its fault). My Allroad is pretty chipped up, but it lives a hard life. The 1998 Heron, finished by waterford, has tough paint. Their frames have been straight on the frame table and have ridden fine. Two of the prototypes had oddities in the braze-ons (one had a visually crooked cantilever post, which would have been a rebuild in a production bike), another had an off-axis set of downtube bottle bosses, and I know they added a fork crown restraint to their fork fixtures practice back in 2001, when they had a run of properly-aligned forks (i.e. the wheel sat right wrt the frame) with with twisted crown orientation (plays hell with caliper brake adjustment). I got one of the special forks from that era, and complained to my dealer, who got them to tighten up their spec. there. I keep going back to ye olde Adidas Samba. I was particularly into them when I still rode with clips 'n straps, as the aero profile of the shoe worked well in that regard. I'm sticking with them on platform pedals cause they're just great, comfy, minimal shoes. I've been trying out the Evolv Cruzer lately too, also nice so far - albeit more flexible in the sole but likely will be cooler than the Sambas once the summa heat comes. Certainly not enough of an improvement in either comfort or speed to give up the flat resistance afforded by the Supremes, especially on a commuter. The Supreme's went back on tonight. Not to rob Bill of his possible tire purchase from you, but you may be running the Barlows too high. I weigh 200 and run my tires at 30-40 PSI. Smooth as butter. The suppler the casing the less the need for pressure and the greater the tire's ability to conform to the road, making it faster. Yes, 50mm fenders are preferable to the 45mm Longboards. Hetres and Loups fit nicely under my Honjo H-50 fenders. The Longboards are just barely wide enough. Fender clearance depends on the frame/fork construction and their fenderable limits. Narrower (and thus shorter) tires will help with clearance, too. hmm. i have barlow passes on my sam. i am not sure they make me a whole lot faster. i sure do think they are more comfortable to ride, and i feel like i can ride much longer, and the bike rolls better. i replaced some marathons as well. i think it's like running in hiking boots and then putting sneakers on. i may not be way faster in sneakers than i am in boots, but it sure is more comfortable to run. (just wanted to say this in case someone came across this thread and was somehow dissuaded from trying some new tires, the barlow passes are the single biggest improvement i have made to my bike since i actually bought a riv that fits) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Most would probably think it is ok, and it has been great, but I like lots of clearance. I also have a Bleriot that I have used Hetres as well as Loups on. The Loups feel plenty cushy at 45psi. Allows much more clearance under the fenders than the Hetres did. I think the Hetres get me 1cm all around, the Loups get me a lot more. *So, I think both tires have a comparable ride quality at these pressures, but just decide if you like more clearance under fenders or not. Disclaimer: I weigh about 175lbs. I don't know how they will feel in another weight class and at different pressures.* The Cypress will allow massive overkill fender clearance. I had them on my Sam for a short time, and they were nice at 50 or 55 psi, if I remember right. But you won't get as good ability to road through cracked roads with tires that narrow, from my experience But again, all these tires are great. [RBW] Re: L'Eroica California (Oh how I wish I went)
The event, course, people and food were tons of fun. I rode my '71 Raleigh International, updated with silver shifters, silver dual-pivot brakes, and modern 10 Campy record hubs (with free hub body). The hubs were laced to 32 hole silver Pacenti PL23 700c box rims, and therefore looked somewhat correct. My bike technically met the most critical regulations (pre-1987 frame, friction dt shifters, non-aero brakes, toe clips, and wheels with 32 spokes), but because I acquired my bike as a frame only, my parts were not period correct. I didn't have the time/money to hunt down all the period parts so I built it with what I had on hand in my parts bins. From what I saw, enforcement of regulations was on the honor system and I felt like my bike build was in the spirit of the event. I did see a couple of Rivendells with modern parts. I'll for sure be back next year. Great riding, company, and food. Wes did a great job IMO. I'm also itching to do the Japan Eroica. I rode with the Japanese organizers for a bit in California and I have a 1973 Fuji Finest that is ready to ride around Mt. Fuji. [RBW] Brooks Saddle Repair - Broken Tension Shackle
As I was heading out the door for my bike ride yesterday afternoon I realized that there was a problem with my much loved Brooks Swift (titanium) saddle. I put my hand on the top of the saddle and noticed an unusual amount of flex. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious that something was wrong. It turns out that part of the tension shackle, the part that connects the nose of the saddle to the saddle frame, had broken. Bummer. The saddle has at least 12,000 miles, and the leather is in great shape, so I want to have this problem fixed. A new tension shackle can be obtained very inexpensively (only $3.50 for the chromed steel version). However, as I have never carried out this repair, I am looking for some guidance / encouragement / advice. A quick internet search turned up a few good tidbits, but I'm hoping for some help here from the experts. Is this a relatively easy repair that a mechanic with limited skills can complete or would I be much better off shipping the saddle to a qualified repair expert? If this is not a home mechanic job, I would appreciate advice on where to have it fixed - ideally in the USA. [RBW] 51cm Sam Hillborne build: advice?
Greetings Riv-owning folks, Today my new Sam Hillborne frameset arrived, and I'm beyond stoked to start building 'er up. I opted for only the frameset because I work for a local bike shop and am able to get some pretty sweet deals on components. However, I'm new to the shop and this will be my first build from scratch, so I'm open to advice. I'd like the Sam set up with mid-weight touring in mind, with some flexibility to maintain a comfortable and reasonably speedy unloaded ride, and will definitely be going drop-bar style with Noodles. My question for you folks is what are some key upgrades I might consider over the standard build kit suggested on Riv's website? What have you learned from outfitting your own Rivs? [RBW] Re: VO Sabot pedal reviews needed, please.
I love the sabots. No creaking issues. Very comfortable (the most I ride anymore is 70 miles, tops). Rode 40 miles in the rain once with an old pair of Keen sandals and had no issues with slippage. Highly recommended from my point of view. [RBW] Re: VO Sabot pedal reviews needed, please.
So far I'm loving the Sabots! Didn't care for the Grip Kings. Love the MKS touring but, yeah, wanted something bigger. I own the VP Thin Gripsters and like them, however I prefer toe cages, so the VO Sabot was the next logical step. Call me crazy. I do a lot of touring, gravel, dirt, etc. on a number of different Rivs. At the end of the day street shoes + cages/straps feel the best to me. However- I have not logged too many miles on the VO Sabot w/ or w/o toe cage, so my input may not be of much use. Just wanted to chime in and let you know that I'm pretty happy thus far. I am delighted to hear about your riding and health improvements! Fantastic ride, Bob! Your weight difference is similar to mine. I dropped from 280 to 190 four years ago when I shifted to paleo (and now ketogenic). I'm at 200 now, I suspect because of increased leg muscle (I'm actually leaner round the waist). For rides longer than 50 miles, I take a block of cheese, but almost never touch it. That may change as I head for 200K distances. I don't eat breakfast and often don't even have a creamed coffee or tea before I ride, so I'm riding fasted from dinner the night before and feel great the entire ride. Re: [RBW] Hunq's Slipping Seatpost
Just had the same problem with a bike that I built for my son. Brought the bike into an LBS and discovered that the seat tube was out of spec. It was 27.4 instead of 27.2. They cut a shim for me as a temporary fix and it didn't work, even though it was the right thickness of .2 mm. Fortunately, they make 27.4 seat posts and I got a hold of one but that even slipped. Then I changed the seat post collar from a fancy thin titanium type to a wider one and cinched it tight. Voila, finally the seat post didn't budge. On Mon, Apr 27, 2015 at 7:17 AM, Kevin Lindsey lindsey.ke...@gmail.com wrote: Just finished building my Hunqapillar over the weekend and rode it 20+ miles to work this morning. Although still too early to tell, it has my very favorite bike stamped all over it. With one possible exception: I can't get the seatpost to stop slipping down. Despite tightening the bolt to so hard that the allen hole is starting to strip, it still inches down as I ride, and we had to stop six times on the ride in this morning to raise the seat back up. Very frustrating. I had thought that maybe the brake cable hanger was interfering with the seat tube somehow, but I don't see how that can be avoided, given the shape of the hanger and the fact that it has to remain attached to the seatpost bolt. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Best to all, Kevin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. No offense, Matt outdoor weathering neglect is the only thing that will fuse a seatpost and seat tube by corrosion. They definitely feel lively and plush, like walking barefoot on a nice rug. Based on my experience with the Stampede Pass (also regular weight) on my Romulus, I expected them to be significantly faster than the Marathon Supremes that they replaced, but I was disappointed in this regard. Certainly not enough of an improvement in either comfort or speed to give up the flat resistance afforded by the Supremes, especially on a commuter. The Supreme's went back on tonight. [RBW] Re: Great ride and failure to help
Riding around other people was a new experience for me. I'll see folks out on the remote roads and trails, but if they are stopped fixing something they are prepared, because being remote demands self sufficiency -- all the more because cell reception is spotty at best in many of those places. This was my first ride into population and preparedness is less a perceived consideration (I suppose) because there is always cell signal and help nearby. This felt like encountering a tourist in trouble when trail running. I am recovering some today, but not nearly as much as I thought I might before this boundary pushing experiment. I have no desire to ride there often, but it sure is amazing to know that I am now able to when I choose to. Horizons keep slowly expanding! I have been running the smaller Acorn on a 63cm Saluki with no problems, but have not pushed the weight up to that level. I also go with a Carradice Barley bag SQR when I do grocery shopping. Don, I am running large Acorn bag on my 61 cm Hilsen. I am guessing my regular weight comes in between 5-7lbs. I use mine for commuting to work. Clothes, lunch, repair kit, wallet, phone etc. No real issue handling. I have a descent on the way, that drops about 500+feet over 3/4 of a mile. I have hit speeds (not trying) of around 35 mph. No handling issues to speak of. I am in S.E PA. and the roads are in pretty bad shape overall. Tough couple of winters back to back have left things pretty broke up. [RBW] WTB 700c tourish wheels
ok, gonna come at this wheel issue another way. previously i was looking for an ultra cheap pair to put on a bike im selling. nothing was really happening below the 75$ mark, so now im thinking i might want to put my most so-so/used up wheels on that bike as part of the sale and dedicate the money to a new-to-me wheelset for a sam h. i'd like to spend between 150$-200$. maybe you've got something you don't need anymore. maybe, like me, you want to upgrade to something better than what you've got, but what you've got would be good for me. *ideally, looking for* -something good for light touring and occassional dirt. strong like. -36 spoke or 32fx36r, 135 rear spacing -room for 38-50mm tires. -7-9speed cassette -dynamo might be cool. ive never had a dynamo set up. might not be in the budget though, and definitely not a necessity. -low miles also, i guess if you have just one wheel, i wouldn't mind mixing and matching, though that can sometimes jack up the cost in the long run. i have an xd2-600 triple crank and some cromo albatross bars, if you want to do a partial trade too. thanks! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Rondo bags on a Hilsen
I don't know about the Tall Rando bag, but I have the regular one and rode a 600k with it. I filled it with food and clothes around the 5-7 lb range and had no handling issues. I did feel like I overloaded the front once with too much food and had to redistribute some of the heavy things to my rear saddle bag. It kind of felt like it was really hard to control the bike when it was stopped. Once I swapped some food for clothes it felt fine. [RBW] 51cm Sam Hillborne build: advice?
1. RBW Silver bar end shifters are tops if you are into friction shifting only. Run an 8-speed cassette for better friction shifting. 2. Brand Bois Hetre tires, if your bike is 650b 3. Compass Loup Loup Pass tires, if bike is 650b 4. Get curent black label Grand Bois 650b 36 hole rims laced to LX hubs because mounting Hetres on 650b Synergy rims is a bear to do. They pretty much auto-seat on Grand Bois rims, though. Put any Dynamo hub you like on the front wheel so you can run a dyno headlight. 5. Definitely replace the stock black Tektro R559 brake pads with a salmon pad for better wet weather braking. 6. If you like your bars below saddle height, get a Nitto Pearl Stem. Tallux and Technomics will bottom out at saddle height. Their rise is too high. Pearls have a shorter rise to get bars lower than saddle height. At least on my 52 Blue Sam it is that way. But if you don't upgrade anything, you will still have one of the finest bikes on the planet. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Broken Crank (Quickbeam)
First let me say...no injuries, no accident, didn't even fall over. Having said that, it was a bit unexpected and I'm terribly grateful it didn't happen this weekend when I rode the 2015 JBK Haleiwa Metric Century on my Quickbeam (and had a great time as documented in another email and at: http://www.statrix.com/2015/04/2015_jbk_ride_report/) Anyway, I left work today, hopped on my bike and was going to run a few errands and maybe put in an extra mile or two (and I do mean just a mile or two - but still fun, eh?) I was at a light and when stood and pushed off when the light turned green my foot sort of kept going to the ground. Luckily I didn't fall and stopped, though it probably looked clumsy. I couldn't figure out how I'd missed the pedal. I hadn't. My Sugino XD2-QB double 40/32 175mm and come undone. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157652254822642/ I didn't take an image in place. I got the hell off the road. :-) I bought the bike in December 2009 and have ridden the heck out of it. I've also mostly been a lot heavier than I am today (also documented in other emails around here). I've gone from 275 to 197, mostly since November 2014. If you do the math, the crank mostly got me at my heaviest. If you look at the break it seems pretty clear it'd been a while coming. There are definite differences from one side of the break to the other. As I said, I'm really just grateful that it didn't happen on the century this weekend, or in heaving traffic (could have too). It was pretty much a non-event. For those who wonder, I have a Hunq that'll be ridden a bit more now. If I'm annoyed with anything it's that I just, and I mean just, ordered some new cork grips from Riv and now will have to order a new crank - twice the shipping charge. If I'd have waited a day or two on the cork grips it could all be one box. Sigh. Luxury problem. Anyway I ride the bike almost exclusively in 42x16 mode and figure I'll get new chainrings and a new single speed cassette - all contingent on taking the chain off and actually seeing what things look like - I might be okay. As for the Hunq I just had a new dynohub wheel made for it and when I got home instead of playing around the with disassembly the QB I put on the new Eyc light, Top Line rear light, and wired it all up. Tomorrow I have a late ride 'date' and until now only the QB had that much light going for it. :-) Aloha, Bob -- Robert Harrison Honolulu, HI rfharri...@gmail.com statrix.com Wu Name: Tha Eurythmic King of Nowhere -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Babyshoe Pass or Loup Loup Pass for my Sam
Ted - Great advice, those are all points that were making me lean towards 38s originally. Plus I didn't think of the brake thing (they are calipers). I go back on forth on fenders all the time, I hardly ever ride in the rain, and it hardly ever rains out here, but even then I previously had fenders with the fatty rumpkins and it was fine, mostly. I think it'll be a decision b/w the 38 and 42's. Thanks for the offer on the Cypres, I do have some on my 700c road bike and love them (which is maybe another reason I kind of want to go wide as possible, to differntiate more b/w the other road bike). [RBW] Re: Compass Barlow Pass Tires
I hope I didn't dissuade someone from trying something new. The reality is the compass tires were more comfortable than the marathons but didn't improve the performance enough in my calculus to be worth trading for the flat-resistance the marathons offer. This is a commuter bike and I don't think the Barlow Pass is a great choice for me for that application. Perhaps my expectations were too high after my experience with the Stampede Pass on my Rom. My buddy is building up a Hillborne with the Barlow Pass XL tires and I'm looking forward to taking that for a spin. Maybe I was just having a bad day or the tires couldn't overcome the inherent sluggishness of my heavy wheels, or maybe the Atlantis is simply a beast that will never float like my Rom no matter what tire I put on it. Many variables. Also, on a populaire/brevet I rode several weeks ago there was a guy on an old Raleigh with the EL Barlow Pass tires and he swore they were creme brûlée. He finished the 200k with the fastest time of the day. He would have been fast on a tricycle, but clearly the tire was working for him. Re: [RBW] Re: Babyshoe Pass or Loup Loup Pass for my Sam
The Cypres are a great tire - had them on my Ram. If there was room for a wider 700c tire I would have gone for it, though. I do think that 38 seems like a sweet spot for a go-fast setup and there are a few options out there. The Pari-Moto is a great event tire and the Soma B-side for those who like a Pasela tread. Plus the Compass Loup Pass. Cypres EL are cheap out of Japan at the moment. As are Pari-Motos out of Boulder. Maybe too many choices? I will disent from the likely majority opinion and suggest you go with the 38 mm tires. I found the 32 mm tires to be excellent for all the roads around me, and I also rode them on local trails and fire roads with no problems. So I am inclined to think 32 mm is wide enough. That said they did look a bit lost in all that clearance, whereas the larger tires fill up the space nicely, and there is no significant down side to going a bit wider. I suggest the 38s over the 42s because they will pass the brakes inflated more easily than the 42s (assuming your Sam doesn't have cantilever brakes). Also if you want fenders come next fall, clearance and coverage will be easier with the 38s. When I changed from 32 to 40+ tires I noticed differences but they were modest enough that I doubt I would notice much difference between 38 and 42. I suspect that 38 is the goldilocks size for bikes like ours, particularly for virtually all paved road use. If you are in the SF Bay area and we can work out the transfer, you can try out my Cypres tires if you like. One has a small casing cut that should probably be booted but otherwise they are fine. My other wheelset has Soma Cazaderos. Should I go as wide as I can fit wit the 42mm Babyshoes (are there wider that can fit the sam)? Or stay a little narrower with the 38M Loup Loups? Or even more narrower with they 32m Cypres? This will be used 97% of the time on decent to well paved roads. Also, if anyone has a lightly used set of any of these for sale let me know ;) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Great ride and failure to help
A few years ago a friend bought a brand spanking new LaPierre carbon fiber frame and fitted his parts from his Serotta onto it, 54T chain ring and all. The first day out, the top tube cracked. After he got the frame replaced from the shop he bought it, we went for a ride on the Burke-Gilman. Not to brag, but he had a hard time keeping up on that 54T; not that I'm all that fast on my Atlantis (average speed around 16 - 18 mph). He bought the bike after watching the Tour de France on TV, which he does every year. I don't know, I guess after 65 years, it never sank in that there's a big difference between romance and reality.
