[RBW] Google Photos

2015-05-30 Thread ascpgh
Wow. I just read an article about some features of the new and improved
Google Photos and took a look at my pictures.

Search "bike" and it will sort through pictures and display any with a bike
in the image or bike related stuff, the latter from tagging information.
Same for noteworthy enough images able to be identified geographically like
the Eiffel tower, or Amsterdam canals. Again with or without geographic
tagging or titling.

The experiment begins...

Re: [RBW] Bag for Front Rack

2015-05-30 Thread Ron Mc
Acorn once made a mini rando bag and you might find a used one on the
forum. I carry a fold-up spare plus the rest in my small Sackville
trunksack. A couple of leather straps (or toe straps) through the top
D-rings will let you roll up and stow a jacket.

[RBW] Your Boulder and Rivendell compare/contrast.

2015-05-30 Thread Clayton.sf

I have had an OS Boulder all road

.7/.4/.7 top tube
.8/.5/.8 down tube

Now I have a standard tubed Boulder all road

.8/.5/.8 top tube
.9/.6/.9 down tube.

Both are 61cm center to top. Both are as light a tubeset as Mike was
comfortable going with for the frame size and the rider (me ~170 lb.).

Both ride amazingly well. Yes, the plane ;-).

There are some possible subtle differences that might just be in my head since
I never rode them back to back so take this with a grain of salt.

The OS bike felt just a little more sure footed and maybe just a smidge
harsher. Not in a bad way. the standard bike feels a bit smoother and the
"flex" a bit more gradual. Hard to really describe. It still feels sure footed
but in a "lighter touch" sort of way that might take some brief getting used
to. Both are fantastic. I'd likely go standard tubed again in the same gauges
(not lighter) if I had to do it over, but you won't go wrong with either. Key
thing is to talk to Mike. He knows what he is doing and will steer you right.

Re: [RBW] Brilliant Bicycle Company

2015-05-30 Thread Jason Hartman
I just read the assembly instructions. Indeed these guys are brilliant.
They have managed to make a bicycle where you can get the front wheel nuts
and pedals tight enough with what looks like a four inch wrench. Even
better, no grease is needed on the stem, seatpost or pedal threads. As an
added bonus the brakes are apparently perfectly adjusted right out of the
box.

have a decent bike, a good rack, nice panniers, a Hoss seatbag, so
some combination of the above should work!!!

[RBW] Re: loaded handling question

2015-05-30 Thread dougP
This is interesting, and illustrates the difficulty of dealing with
shimmy. I use the Tubus Duo low rider (no hoop, just 2 loose pieces) and
have loaded it with Ortleib large panniers (10-12 lbs each). Above that is
a Nitto small front rack supporting an Acorn boxy rando bag (the early,
smaller one), usually stuffed full if traveling. No rear bag, just a seat
wedge with small tools, tube, etc.. This set-up has never shimmied.

A couple of possible variables from Clayton's set-up: my Atlantis has a 40
mm trail fork (stock is around 65 mm) and the IRD roller bearing headset.
Depending on who you believe, lowering trail either magnifies or reduces
the tendency to shimmy (helpful, no?) but consensus is the roller bearing
headset has more drag & so may dampen oscillation, helping reduce shimmy.

I agree with Clayton's hypothesis about rack wiggle & fork twist. Since
shimmy is an oscillation, minor movements could set up major reactions.
Like Clayton, my ride was more stable once I started loading the front,
even with my old junky, definitely flexy aluminum low rider, stock fork &
headset. I did still encounter shimmy. The randomness of it spurred me on
to look for a reliable solution.

[RBW] New, skinny, 26"/559 X 1" tires free for postage

2015-05-30 Thread Patrick Moore
2, 2 1/2, perhaps even 3 pr Specialized Turbos, NIB, 26" X 1" -- actually
very nice tires that ride softly for their width. If they were 571 I'd keep
them for sure, but for the 559 Riv I prefer 32s.

1 Specialized "All Conditions Pro" 26" X 1", unused.

I should think they will fit into a Medium priority box for $12.65.

Please send *POSTAGE* AND self addressed label to me at:

(address provided to taker).

(FWIW, I commuted ~20-30 miles rt across town on the Turbos for a couple of
years and even use them for the usual grocery loads. I had no problems, nor
any more flats than with 32 mm Paselas -- fewer, I think, since Paselas
seem to attract goatheads. I did take to breaking rear spokes under heavy
loads, which may have been due to the aluminum nipples instead of the
tires.)

Re: [RBW] Bag for Front Rack

2015-05-30 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a black Acorn Boxy Rando bag for sale, $150 shipped.
Interior dimensions are 9.5 x 5.5 x 7 inches plus two rider-facing pockets
plus side sleeves.
http://acorn-bag.myshopify.com/products/boxy-rando-bag

Mine was used for two summers and a winter and has been dormant in the
basement for too long.
It was only replaced for the larger Acorn Tall Rando Bag.
Four pictures starting
here
https://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/18093289568/in/dateposted-public/

It has a bit of sun fade and honest road dust, but it ran on an Nitto M12
rack with fenders below it, and is in perfect working order.

Magically categorizes your photos. I have 722 pictures of bicycles. Go
figure.

[RBW] Wanted: 54 Rambouillet or (maybe) a 51 San Marcos or Roadeo

2015-05-30 Thread Johnny Alien
Just like the title says I am looking for a 54 Rambouillet. Probably a
long shot but I had one awhile ago and would love to replace it. I might
be interested in a San Marcos or Roadeo as well. Just looking to get
something to be my "slightly faster" road bike. Rambouillet is my top
search.

[RBW] Another prototype bag design

2015-05-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
I've got a nice new Nitto front rack. It has fun removable lowrider racks,
but all the normal sized panniers are too narrow and too tall to fit it
well. The bags that will fit well I can order from Japan, but I wanted to
scope it out a little bit for free, before I commit to it. So, I took a
few chunks of corroplast, a few yards of gaffer tape and threw together
some DIY panniers. This is like the 5th or 6th bag prototype I've made.
This one is unique because it has kind of a burrito wrap thing. Local
frame builder Cameron Falconer does these plastic sheet burritos on all his
camping bikes, and I wanted to kind of incorporate it into my design. I
can throw two or three stuff sacks into each, wrap it with the plastic
flap, and then strap it down. I'm really eager to try different loading
methods to make sure the bike handles well. Anyway, it's fun to prototype
stuff for free before you go throw a bunch of money at something.

Have a look if you like:

[RBW] Re: Question about knife sharpening device

2015-05-30 Thread bo richardson
the steel is mostly for taking the burr off the blade
after using a stone or stones.
however a lot of the kitchen professionals i know
give their knives a couple of swipes with the steel
ofter using the knife.
