Re: [RBW] 650b Rim: Dyad or A23

2015-06-12 Thread David Banzer
I'd be using 36h rim/hub, so I think the A23 should be sufficient. Leaning
towards that getting them through my LBS so I can build up wheels one at a
time and not have to worry about shipping. First the rear, then a dynamo
front to replace a Synergy-rim front wheel.
Though I'll more than likely start with tubes, it would be nice to try
tubeless and have rims ready to try that out.

[RBW] Car Racks Rivs

2015-06-12 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have been riding bikes with fenders for about 15 years now and have only
found one downside - they often don't play well with racks, neither locking
racks nor car racks.

We have a Saris TBones Hitch rack on our Prius and I found it worked well
with both my Saluki or Ram and Pat's Sequoia. However I have never liked
having the weight of the bikes up that high with the additional stress it
puts on the rack and hitch. Now Pat has switched to riding a Betty with
Albatross bars and I am always struggling to make the two bikes fit. It is
doable as a two person job. I bought and tried one of these parallel TT
but it made the situation worse. It's a challenge to get the her handle
bars my front rackto clear. Likewise my bars her rear rack. Since
both bikes have racks fenders, they are fairly heavy as bike go today but
still within the racks spec. Still the vertical support flexes some under
load.

So... I have been looking at a new hitch racks, especially ones where the
bikes sit in a well and get clamped around the tire. Does anyone have
experience with these to share? Do you have to put the top clamp around
the tire, or is it OK to put it over the fender? The Yakima rack
installation instructions specifically say to put the top hook within 2 of
the fork, which clearly rules out using it with any top rack, like my
Mark's mini. The Saris instructions don't say that is necessary, but the
video on their web site shows them setting it up that way. Finally, how
close together are the wells; is there sufficient space for Albatross bars?

Michael

2015-06-12 Thread John
Hi Hugh,

I tried a stem-to-seatpost adapter, but it just didn't seem secure
enough, so I just tilt the frame and use the Betty's top tube.

I had to remove one of the two water bottle cages. If we ever go somewhere
she'll need two water bottles, I can always bring a cage two bolts. Or
use a couple of Randi Jo M.U.T's.

I've been really impressed by the Thule Apex 4. At first I was terrified to
put our babies out back on the rack, but it's a right sturdy rack.

[RBW] Re: Joy of Wrenching

2015-06-12 Thread Tony DeFilippo
There is something truely satisfying to me about bike wrenching. Maybe it's
just the right balance of being some what arcane but at least on Riv/BOBish
bikes pretty forgiving and knowable.

And while I have plenty of bike projects that are or have taken longer than if
like I can accomplish most in a single session if I've got the materials and
tools right.

Having the right tools makes all the difference.

In the DC metro area I can't recommend Velocity CO-OP highly enough for a diy
shop with all the tools.

  is biased.
In my mind, things like the assessment of clipless pedal and going up
short hills involves a grain of salt because it is not as rigorous as
some of his other testing. A really good test would be to randomize a
bunch of different kinds of cyclists to clipless and flats for each
ride over a long period of time involving lots of different kinds of
cycling and look at the average speeds with and without. But who is
  going to conduct that?
What outcome would matter the most? Speed differential up a hill? Over
a week of commuting? Over a year?

Let's face it: those who like flat pedals - pedals without retention
devices - aren't after performance gains that can be measured
objectively. They're after comfort and convenience. Some riders can
make them work quite effectively, and are happy to accept whatever
objective performance deficits they may have.

I have flat BMX pedals (albeit, without pins) on my shopper. I would
never ride long distances on such a pedal: my feet slip off, and they
often sit crooked on the pedals and I end up stepping on the crank arm
or the chain stay. I'm very happy to have a pedal retention system take
care of positioning my feet, while allowing me to lift my foot without
worrying about it losing its place on the pedal or coming off entirely.
I doubt the lifting of my feet substantially adds to power, as die hard
advocates proclaim, but that's not the only reason to do it.

I'm surprised this discussion has had so much staying power. It's a
relatively trivial issue, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: [RBW] Re: Joy of Wrenching

2015-06-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Funny. I am an impatient perfectionist, and this has obvious psychological
disadvantages. I want my bikes to be perfect; yet I hate the hassle of that
sort of plodding methodicalness that is an essential requirement of
technical perfection. Fixed gear setups help, but my satisfaction in
mechanical perfection is always tainted by irritation at the innumerable
obstacles posed by materiality.

Hum.

Today, work being slack, I undertook the rehabilitation of my next door
neighbor's ancient and replaced gas grill (I live a spit from our bosque,
and a charcoal grill, I fear, would lead to the conflagration of the
century).

Ashes and cinders; grease and oil; hardening and caking. This $100 gas
grill had all of these in spades, and even though I decided against using
caustic solvents, levying the power of scrapers, bushes, and garden trowel,
I ended up with, literally, 2 gallons of carbonated, ex-organic fatty
substances removed from the works. I fashioned a new flame disperser* from
2 sections of tin can**; replaced the side shelving with miscellaneous
lumber; confected a new hatch handle; bought a canister of propane; and lo
and behold, i am now ready to grill like any suburban peritus.

Point being, that actually usable results that result from one's own
material and imaginative intervention are, not only very pleasing, but in
some way, of the very essence of pleasure. Aside: Matthew Crawford's *Shop
Class as Soul Craft* is a very worthwhile meditation on the things raised
by this thread. Crawford is a good, pre-Christian Aristotelian, btw.

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Rack with Swift MIni Short Stack Panniers (or other bags)?

2015-06-12 Thread Neil
I spent considerable time researching whether the HAR would play well with
Lone Peak panniers, and came away with a no-go. I loved the idea of running
the HAR in conjunction with the Nitto mini front rack, but it's too highly
optimized for the Riv bags. I briefly considered going with Riv bags, but
that connection is just too janky, even for me. Like you, I want the option
of easy on/easy off, and the Irish strap option doesn't check that box.

Interesting that the Ortlieb's work. I consider Ortlieb's overbuilt for my
purpose, but it may be worth another look.

I think the Arkel rails might be worth looking into, especially if you can
get them in a short version or cut them down. The rail on the HAR is very
short. But the Arkel system in general is rock solid.

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

[RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-12 Thread Edwin W
I think that Jan does a great job of disclosing and being honest in reviews
AND having a business that runs on a certain kind of biking introduces a
bias.. which is why he should disclose! It is impossible to measure this
bias, we all have to work out in our mind how much he is biased.
In my mind, things like the assessment of clipless pedal and going up short
hills involves a grain of salt because it is not as rigorous as some of his
other testing. A really good test would be to randomize a bunch of
different kinds of cyclists to clipless and flats for each ride over a long
period of time involving lots of different kinds of cycling and look at the
average speeds with and without. But who is going to conduct that?
What outcome would matter the most? Speed differential up a hill? Over a
week of commuting? Over a year?

Love BQ and the Compass products,

Edwin

2015-06-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Steve: Although I am someone who hasn't used non-retention pedals since
1970 (that's a wee bit hyperbolic but largely true) I have to weigh in for
the other side and say that I, personally, have heard too much from riders
with enough experience and certainly enough power output about the joys of
non-retention, *and this for very competitive riding,* that I, personally,
have to keep a bit of an open mind for the possibility that non-retention
has real performance advantages. I mention again young Vaughn of local ss
cyclocross fame and Bruce Boyson erstwhile of the Boblist. Bruce in
particular is, from what I gathered, an experienced cyclist, not just a
last-minute wonder with freakish power output despite self imposed
obstacles. Once again, Bruce used to boast of leaving his clipped in, fully
suspended, 3X10 peers in his single speed, rigid steel, flat-pedal dust.
And he was 50 or so when I last heard him on the Boblist.

I *know* that I gain torque from pulling up on the passive pedal while I
torque down on the power pedal while pulling up hard on the bar. I am
beginning to think, after trying the various puzzle pieces, that
retentionless works best, even in performance situations, with low gearing,
relatively high cadence, and relatively low torque. I may be wrong.

So: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the ...Oh, wait: I, Patrick Moore,
of ABQ, NM, pledge, promise, commit, and vow to try retentionless on a
derailleur all rounder bike (Fargo, namely) for at least 200 miles of
combined ABQ, NM pavement and sandy bosque riding, and to report my
findings, results, conclusions, verdicts, pronouncements, and judgments to
the list. Amen.

Patrick Moore, who seriously proposes to do this, notwithstanding his
otherwise intolerable flippancy, in ABQ, NM.

On Fri, Jun 12, 2015 at 3:47 PM, Steve Palincsar palin...@his.com wrote:

Let's face it: those who like flat pedals - pedals without retention
devices - aren't after performance gains that can be measured
objectively. They're after comfort and convenience. Some riders can make
them work quite effectively, and are happy to accept whatever objective
 performance deficits they may have.

I have flat BMX pedals (albeit, without pins) on my shopper. I would
never ride long distances on such a pedal: my feet slip off, and they often
sit crooked on the pedals and I end up stepping on the crank arm or the
chain stay. I'm very happy to have a pedal retention system take care of
positioning my feet, while allowing me to lift my foot without worrying
about it losing its place on the pedal or coming off entirely. I doubt the
lifting of my feet substantially adds to power, as die hard advocates
proclaim, but that's not the only reason to do it.

I'm surprised this discussion has had so much staying power. It's a
relatively trivial issue, as far as I'm concerned.

I think it depends on what you want for wheel base. The Atlantis is about
1 shorter: having slightly shorter chainstays and shorter top tube.
Otherwise I think they are very much the same.

I have an Atlantis. It's great. I wouldn't change anything. I haven't
figured out what makes a longer wheelbase more desireable.

I run rear panniers 100% of the time, never hit them with heels so the rear

Maybe HunQ has some unknown mojo... but no bike will have a better head

The Atlantis badge is worth $2300.

 Hum.

Today, work being slack, I undertook the rehabilitation of my next door

Point being, that actually usable results that result from one's own

some way, of the very essence of pleasure. Aside: Matthew Crawford's *Shop

Toyota does not recommend hitch racks on my car so that leaves a roof rack
for me. When I looked at buying a roof rack to accommodate a Betty Foy and
Sam Hillborne with Fenders and Wald baskets the price was a real sticker
shock for me. At well over a thousand dollars (Canadian), I decided to just
use our Bromptons instead. They aren't as comfortable, in fact they are
horrible but until I pony up for a roof rack, then they will have to do.

And I wholly agree with Michael, the 1up website really needs some help.

Still dreaming of a roof rack though.

Well, which size are you considering? The Altantis comes in more sizes so you

I considered this when I picked the 48cm hunq with a 54cm top tube over the
47cm Atlantis with a 52cm? top tube.

Handlebar choice might also factor into that.

I answered politely, but I was furious. It should have been obvious to

Don't be a jerk. Don't assume that riders who make different choices

extreme case: Do we also need a rigorous study to prove that a bike with
 flat tires rolls slower?

I think it's pretty clear that during normal riding, retention makes
little difference. Grant P. is right when he says that you don't pull up
much, if at all. However, during short efforts on rolling terrain, it's
obvious that you can pull up, and I did realize how much I do pull up when
that ability was taken away. On the same bike and the same course, I
suddenly needed to shift on the smallest hills, whereas usually, I just
roll over them. And getting out of the saddle had no benefit, since I
couldn't lever the bike with my lower foot as a fixed point. Suddenly, my
power output was limited by my body weight...

In the article, I compared it to opening the lid of a jar. If you hold
the jar with one hand and the lid with the other, you can apply way more
force than if you have your friend hold the jar while you turn the lid.

Considering this, I am not sure I want to put our limited resources into
 a more sophisticated study.

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-12 Thread Jan Heine
It's totally normal to be skeptical when a magazine also has a sister
company that sells bicycle components... However, the reason Compass exists
is because we at Bicycle Quarterly wanted to put our research into practice
and make the parts that we want to ride on our own bikes. We cannot tell
others what they should manufacture (and believe me, we have tried!), so we
had to do it ourselves. It's that simple.

The conflict of interest is best dealt with by being honest. So when the
handlebar bag of a test bike that was held on with a Grand Bois decaleur we
sell flew off during a fast gravel descent, of course, we reported it. When
we found that the Grand Bois Ourson tires didn't perform appreciably better
than the Panaracer Col de la Vie that used the same mold, we said so. Sure,
we lost some sales at Compass, but the credibility of Bicycle Quarterly is
far more important. And the Ourson tires were discontinued based on our
research, and we replaced them with our own Compass Loup Loup Pass tires,
which perform much better. And Compass Bicycles sells the MKS platform
pedals and half-clips that I found to offer less optimal performance on
short hills... If I was trying to boost sales, I would have said that the
half-clips offer the same performance as clipless or full toeclips, and
have quoted the Youtube study...

To suspect that we talk about fork judder on carbon cyclocross forks only
to boost sales of Rene Herse bikes is a bit far-fetched. For full
disclosure, we do get a small licensing fee from Boulder Bicycles for every
Rene Herse bike sold, but so few of these bikes are being made that it's
totally insignificant, on par of what we make from selling Maxi-Car
replacement axles. These are projects we do because we want to do them, not
because they make money. We also do sell the wonderful Kaisei Toei
Special fork blades, but again, I doubt many are sold to riders who'd
otherwise buy a production carbon fork...

The carbon fork issue (brake judder with cantilever brakes and a
high-mounted cable hanger) has been reported in many magazines, but I
believe we are the first who figured out what really is happening. It is
simply a mismatch between very stout fork legs and a flexible steerer.
Instead of getting the brake dive in the fork legs as the weight
transfers forward during braking, you get flex in the steerer, which
affects the tension of the brake cable, setting up a rhythmic oscillation.
It can happen with any fork material, but it's predominant with carbon
forks. I am sorry if that wasn't explained clearly enough in the article.

Jan, I apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone, and was totally mistaken
about your connection to Rene Herse. Your connection to them in my mind,
somehow became your brand, that you sold. However I stand by my brake comments.
I had intense brake judder on my Specialized Crux, and it was cured by toe-in
(regardless of the cause). Other forks may not have the same results, and using
different brake pads could change things too. I use long Mt. bike Kool Stop
salmon pads with great results. Cantilever brakes are all basically the same.
They all need toe in, regardless of the fork material. You do a great job on
your magazine and products and I can't blame anyone for marketing their
products the best way they see fit.Clayton Bailey

I don't run fenders so I can't comment on that compatibility, but the only
issues I could imagine would be protecting them from the clamping arms.

Lots of people like his bikes and he appears to be an excellent

I like quicker steering, flexier frames and lower BB's. And low trail

One of, if not *the* first semi-standard bike of this type available,
outside of Rivendell. Semi-standard because they're built-to-order to
your own personal measurements, rather than pre-built and sitting on a
shelf. Not exactly custom either because, from what I understand, Shawn
still insists on defining the rest of the geometry and tubing specs himself
 - not unlike the process you might get with a custom Rivendell. Lots of
available options though, INCLUDING disc brakes at no extra cost, and
 rack-mounts galore.

It's totally normal to be skeptical when a magazine also has a sister
company that sells bicycle components... However, the reason Compass exists
is because we at Bicycle Quarterly wanted to put our research into
practice and make the parts that we want to ride on our own bikes. We
cannot tell others what they should manufacture (and believe me, we have
tried!), so we had to do it ourselves. It's that simple.

Thank you Jan. I have always found your candor about your products

[RBW] Re: Car Racks Rivs

2015-06-12 Thread hsmitham
Michael,

Pretty sure you've already tried this but I'll forge ahead anyway. My wife
and I both have Riv's with Albatross bars outfitted with racks, bags and
baskets, using any rack is a challenge. I've used a number of them over the
years.

Currently on my Miata I use a Saris Freedom hitch rack
https://www.saris.com/product/freedom-2 ( tray type with central mast that
attaches to the down tube)

And on our truck with camper I have a swing away hitch rack ( the type that
suspends the bike from the top tube) to have access to the rear.
 http://www.yakima.com/shop/bike/hitch/swingdaddy An arm adapter is
required on this one with the Mixte.

In both cases I have to loosen the stem and rotate the handle bars and
either lower or raise the seat to clear each other. I make sure to mark
seat and handlebar height/position obviously.

I used to have a Thule hitch rack like the one you're considering. The
stabilizing arm ideally makes contact with the top of the front tire. I
suppose you could cheat it a bit forward to clear the leading edge of the
fender but that wouldn't be optimal.

https://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/hitch-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-t2-2-bike-916xtr-_-916xtr

In one of the pictures in the above link you can see where the stabilizing
arm makes contact with the front tire. I sold mine when I sold our other
truck and bought the Miata. The Saris is much lighter weight. All have
pluses and minuses.

Hope I was of some help.

Tail Winds,

~Hugh

Well, you are going to have to H a little bit longer and harder.

While Jan owns the name and sells components with it, Rene Herse branded
randonneur frames are made and sold by Mike Kone and Mark Nobilette (who
used to and may still make some of the Riv forks by the way).

Jan does not charge Mike to use the name for the bicycles.

Definitely no bikes for sale on the Compass site.

Clayton, I don't think your head should have been bitten off. It was a

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-12 Thread Jan Heine
Clayton,

No apologies necessary. You are right that a lot of brake judder can be
cured with toe-in adjustment. However, on these carbon forks, even the most
extreme toe-in doesn't solve the problem - we tried everything (including
toe-out, different pads, etc.). On our first long ride on that particular
bike, we actually stopped multiple times adjusting the brakes (with several
professional bike mechanics on the team, everybody felt that _they_ could
cure the problem, even if the others couldn't). I am glad that your bike
doesn't display the brake judder any longer, because it's annoying, and not
something I'd gladly live with on a daily basis.

 Jan, I apologize.
I did not mean to offend anyone, and was totally mistaken about your
connection to Rene Herse. Your connection to them in my mind, somehow
became your brand, that you sold. However I stand by my brake comments. I
had intense brake judder on my Specialized Crux, and it was cured by toe-in
(regardless of the cause). Other forks may not have the same results, and
using different brake pads could change things too.

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Rack with Swift MIni Short Stack Panniers (or other bags)?

2015-06-12 Thread DS
Alright, for anyone else who is interested, I called Rivendell and they
said that the Swift bags would work if you got 'creative', I didn't get any
further clarification on what that meant. Talked to Swift, they said that
it wouldn't work due to 1. the bottom hook not having anything to keep it
in place (though they recommended zip tying a tube to the rack to hold it
in place as a fix) and 2. the top hook wouldn't fit on the area near the
mount, the fork is in the way. I think I read something about someone
redoing the spacing to make that work.

Anyone have experience with other panniers on the HAR? I want to be able to
remove it quickly and like having a strap on top to carry it with.

Scratch that, I meant the Jr. Ranger Pannier.

Anyone use the HAR with other front panniers, or specifically the mini

 creative to make them work?

Re: [RBW] BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-12 Thread Matthew J
Flat, clipped, I don’t really care, and I don’t proselytize others to my
point of view.

Curiously, the only time I've had people preach to me is the one time I
would least expect - chance encounters with other tour cyclists while on
tour myself.

Not sure if it is a function of crazy guys and gals on a bike losing their
social reserve after long days alone on the saddle or something else.
After I assure I've done plenty of tours cleatless but half clipped the
conversation usually trends elsewhere - like to the all important, 'there
is farm with a pack of marauding loose dogs I can expect to pass the next
day' conversations.

Re: [RBW] 650b Rim: Dyad or A23

2015-06-12 Thread DS
Go for the A23. I just got a set built by Rich for my Sam which is mostly
used in the same fashion with a tool bag in the rear and a small bag
upfront. I run the 650x42 babyshoe pass tires on them and they fit great in
the rim.
