[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs. Atlantis

2015-06-13 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't think the Hunq was built around Bosco bars. I'm pretty sure it had been
in production at least a couple of years before Riv came out with the Bosco
bars. At least I seem to remember it that way.

[RBW] Re: Finished Sam Hillborne build

2015-06-13 Thread Zach Duval
Thanks all for the kind words.

The pump is in fact a Silca Impero, without the Campy head, but free
(found amidst miscellaneous rubble in basement storage at the LBS I work
at). Doesn't hit high pressure but will fill a tube enough to get me where
I can top 'er off.

The saddle is actually an antique brown Brooks Select with about a year's
use on it, and the handlebar tape is three coats amber shellac over yellow
VO comfy cotton. Great combo but not quite as equal as this picture would
imply.

I look forward to many years and many combinations of build on this
bicycle. Truly a great machine, and so darn pretty.

[RBW] Chainring Width Question

2015-06-13 Thread David Banzer
I bought T. Durant's remaining lot of Willow chainrings a while back. NOTE:
this is not a promotional post, merely an inquiry.

I've been contacted by quite a few folks asking what speed chains will work
with these. Particularly, I have the question of whether 10-speed-Narrow
Campy will work.
Personally, I've stuck to 9-speed at the most.
Chainrings I have were sold by Riv at some point, so there's the RBW-OB
content.

Main question: At what point does 3/32" (internal chain width) chainring
width NOT work with certain systems?

Indulge my stupidity with kindly worded responses.

Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS- Rivendell Reader and Bicycle Quarterly collections

2015-06-13 Thread M D Smith
I am moving to New York City in a few weeks and need to downsize. I want to
pass along my collection of Rivendell Readers, catalogs, and flyers and
(Vintage) Bicycle Quarterlies. I want to offer them up to the list before
resorting to eBay...

Rivendell Collection:

Rivendell Readers- numbers 11 to 43, except for 12,27, & 32.
15 Rivendell catalogs- number 5 (1999) to 2006.
Various holiday, summer, and new bike flyers, including the Atlantis, Romulus,
and Rambouillet brochures.

These have been read over and over and have the beausage to prove it. All are
still plenty readable. One of the color cover ones is a bit mangled from the
PO. Decent used condition for pulp paper that has existed for up to 15 years.

How's about 50 bucks, media mail postage included. (The box weighs about 12# so
any other method might get expensive.)

Vintage Bicycle Quarterly/Bicycle Quarterly Collection:

28 VBQ/BQ issues. The first 28 issues inclusive. Vol 1 #1 through Vol 4 #4 are
VBQ, Vol 5 #1 through Sum 09 are Bicycle Quarterly. Again, used/read condition.
Better paper than the Readers, and the condition reflects that.

Pristine back issues are still available at $9.75 a pop. For these I'm thinking
$90 shipped. That works out to about 3 bucks an issue plus media mail postage.

Please contact me off list at beewak -at- gmail- com if interested.

Cheers- Mike in Htfd, CT, soon to hail from Bkln, NY

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs. Atlantis

2015-06-13 Thread shawn m.
I have both bikes. My Hunqapillar is a 54 with 700C wheels, the Atlantis is
a 56 with 26" wheels. The Hunq is set up with racks, fenders, dyno/lights,
and boscos. The Atlantis is minimal by comparison; drop bars, downtube
shifters, no racks, no fenders, no dyno, but a pretty nice set of 90s era
White Industries hubs. There are SO many differences in the setup that it's
not super meaningful to compare the two. Sure, as FRAMESETS there's a lot
of mission overlap; but as they're set up in the real world, they are
fundamentally different bikes. I use the Atlantis for joyriding, and the
Hunq for everything (commuting, errands, camping, touringAND
joyriding). The Atlantis handles much quicker than the Hunq. Shorter
chainstays? Maybe, but it might be just a simple case of being lighter. I
can't imagine anyone regretting a choice between the two, though; they're
both wondrous bicycles.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs. Atlantis

2015-06-13 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I would guess the differences are just representations of Grant's evolving
preferences in bike design. I get the impression that the Atlantis is a
sort of "legacy" model that, while still being a great bike, is kept around
for nostalgia reasons. I'm pretty sure I've read statements to the effect
that the Hunqapillar is the next evolutionary step, from the Atlantis, in a
touring bike.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs. Atlantis

2015-06-13 Thread Will
No. 7 mm is about 1/4 inch. So nothing dramatic. It's probably to do with
how the lugs align or how the machines cut tube.

The real deal is that the cockpit is slightly longer and that probably
speaks to spec'ing Boscos. And the chainstays are slighly longer and that
happens when you need to keep rider weight in the middle of the frame
(given longer top tube and spec'ing Boscos). I think this bike is built
around the bars.

  Oh yeah . . . . you could try a 9 speed chain too. A 7/8 sp. chain is
7.1mm wide externally , the 9 is 6.6-6.8mm wide depending on brand .

very natural and effortless. Can´t remember when a foot slipped.

May it be that your brain over time grews connections to cope effectively with

I rode flat rubber pedals when I was a kid.

When I first got a derailleur bike in 1964 it had toe clips and straps.
I rode with clips and straps for well over 20 years and then switched to
clipless: first, Mavic Look-alikes with float, then SPDs. It's been
around 24 years with clipless.

I used retentionless pedals on my commuters for 15 years - first rubber
3-speed Raleigh pedals for 5 years, then MTB style that look like a bear
trap for 10. I still bear scars from the raking those bear traps gave
my shin one time when I kicked the pedal around a bit too
enthusiastically, never having noticed that the occasional grounding on
a sharp climbing 180 degree turn on the bike trail had sharpened them.
So in 1995 I gave them up, and didn't try retentionless pedals again
until 4 or 5 years ago.

So, for me, lots and lots of experience with both types, and lots of
disappointment with those BMX flatties Grant was so enthusiastic about
when he was selling them.

[RBW] Re: Joy of Wrenching

2015-06-13 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Rivendell's videos are among the best I've seen for learning bike
mechanics. Replacing a bottom bracket is as easy as that video makes it
look, if you have the right tools.

I still have trouble adjusting V-brakes (I won't even touch traditional
cantis). I can get them installed, get everything balanced but I can't set
the distance from the rim to save my life. I suspect that if I would just
invest in the 4th hand tool, I could probably do it pretty well. Doing by
hand just isn't working for me. I also don't mess with headset cups. I
won't try the screwdriver/hammer method and I don't want to spend the
relatively big bucks the tools would cost. Everything else on a bike, I've
done. I get some satisfaction out of it but I can't really say I enjoy it.
It's just that I have several partial bikes and I'm constantly juggling
parts between them so doing it myself is a must. I don't have the money or
the time for an LBS to do it.

"Don’t make bicyclists more visible. Make drivers stop hitting them".

"Mandatory helmet laws and glow-in-the-dark spray paint just show who really
owns the roads"

The Bike Snob retort is a good read. Always entertaining anyway. Face it,
cyclists are second class citizens on our public roads. Many times I've ridden
on a busy road, in the debris and glass, with the cars whizzing by, and thought
"I don't belong here!". I'm a stranger in a strange land. Our public roads have
been stolen from us, he says, and he's right.

Not that I'm anti-car, I own two of them. I love the mobility that car travel
allows. It's just that cars are overused. People drive when they should be
walking or biking. The bike industry doesn't help by promoting bikes that
can't carry
squat, are uncomfortable to ride, and required special shoes to pedal. To say
nothing of manadory helmut laws and now spray paint to cover yourself with.

Kudos to Volvo though for developing and giving away the spray paint. Better
get a case of it though because it only lasts a week. I hope it saves a few
lives.

[RBW] Re: Car Racks & Rivs

2015-06-13 Thread KC
I started a similar thread about a month ago when we needed to purchase a
new bike and I wanted a platform as my hanging one seemed to be killing my
mixte. We were concerned with both a mixte and fenders. The 1up was
highly recommended to me and confirmed that it was fine with fenders Here's
the comment re that sent to me off-list "I have fenders on my Surly Long
Haul Trucker and I bought the foam pad thingy 1Up makes for a few extra
dollars which works very well and doesn’t crush the fender. I did notice
that on the back fender that the struts (the arms that straddle the wheel)
actually touch the fender struts which connect it to the back stays - at
first I was a bit worried about bending them & then I realized that if
anything, it kept the bike more securely upright in the rack, without me
needing to “clamp” the fender/wheel as hard, and that it had no ill effects
on the fender alignment."

I really liked everything I saw about the 1up, but we ended up going with
the Hollywood Rack instead (also recommended in the thread). It was about
half the cost and seemed fine, even if not quite as substantial. The
initial install was pretty easy - you have to set the platforms in the
proper positions for the specific bikes and that takes a couple of
minutes. For $350 we got the carrier that works either as a 2-bike carrier
or adds the extension to make it a 4-bike. To this point we've only used
it for the 2 and haven't even attached the extension. It loads so fast it
is amazing. As a non-tall woman I love that I can easily lift my bike
on/off and that it puts things at eye level.

The bar is nicely padded and clamps on the top tube of the bike and on my
mixte it nestles perfectly where it meats the seat tube. The instructions
are to place the bikes opposite one another but when we did that, there was
some slight interference and we put them the same direction instead of
messing with seats, etc. And it worked perfectly. Both are very
secure. It is a little concerning that the tires extend through
the platform so I have visions of crunching my bike if the tires hit on an
incline. But it is very clear that the bottom of the carrier will hit
first since the platforms sit up higher, so I know they are safe. We are
able to keep the rack on all the time and tilt it for access to the back of
the car, not quite as nice as the swing-away hanging rack we had before,
but not bad. And it is so easy to unload/load the bikes that even if we
have to remove them to do something (like pull a kayak off roof), it's not
a big deal.

We tow our jeep behind an rv with the rack mounted to the jeep. The
instructions say not to use it for a tow vehicle or on a trailer, but it
seems to be just fine and it seems like a standard thing with all the racks
and we've always done it w/o problems. So just hoping it is just a
standard disclaimer which must be related to the added length affecting how
it handles on an incline but we have to be careful of that already (the
hitch between the rv and car would likely hit so we'd be forewarned)

Here's a picture attached) of our 2 bikes on it the first time we used it.
Not sure it's the greatest picture but could take better on Mon/Tues when
we load up for our big trip. We will also probably be putting the added
attachment on at that time so we have the flexibility to carry other bikes
with us since it's a group trip.

(We had also considered the Kuat since it seemed great, but never had an
opportunity to see one and it was very pricey also. Saw one week before
last in a parking lot and it is a beautiful, sturdy-looking frame. Looks
much more substantial than ours, but we are completely happy with our
purchase)

Took a chance and tried out Vee Rubber Speedsters on my Redwood conversion.
They're running about 47mm true width.
They fit! With room for fenders!
Chainstay clearance is a little tight due to the dimpling for 700c tires,
might look into adding some dimpling if it becomes an issue, so far it
isn't.

It was in the NY Times Sunday Magazine section when his book came out.

[RBW] Re: Car Racks & Rivs

2015-06-13 Thread Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado
The 1UP looks like a nice unit. I watched the video but didn't see them
install or remove a bike. I'd like to know if it would work with fenders
and or basket.
I have fork mounts on the front wall of my pick-up bed but the front rack
and basket negate using that.
For now I just lay my bike down in the bed of my pick-up and bungee it and
wrap towels around the Brooks and where the handlebars touch the bed.

The honey leather seat and handlebars look so beautiful with the Hillborne
blue but the wood slats on your basket really complete the classic look.
 Gorgeous! You'll love the ride.

PS: To Drew's earlier question... we would like to know who makes that
pump. Looks great with the Nitto, Silver, Sugino components.

[RBW] Re: 7 speed Front Derailleur recommendations

2015-06-13 Thread Garth
6, 7, and 8 speed chains are all the same One width chain . At least any
SRAM , KMC, Wipperman and Shimano are .Some derailers with their
indented plates simply leave little room for lateral movement. You crank
is likely less than perfect straight , they all var slightly. Some much
worse than others .

Sometimes playing with the angle of the FD cage can help, this is trial and
error in a workstand. Sometimes not.

FWIW, I like the less or no indented old Shimano FD. Like early Deore's .

However, I use a Shimano 105 double from around 1999, FD-5500 I think,
anyways any Shimano double on the lower end , like Tiagra(marketed as 8/9
speed) , works fine with triples. I have it on a 24/36/50 XD crank on my
road bike . It shifts fine . Double FD cages are relatively straight,
with minimal indentations inside the plate , so they have more room for
lateral play . Plus, they just shift great !

[RBW] Re: Car Racks & Rivs

2015-06-13 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yea, the site is pretty clunky. i also thought they were spendy till I started
looking at the other offerings. For me, it ended up being a wash because I only
needed to carry one bike, but it had to be a tray style. Every other offering
was 2 or more bikes and cost equal or more even with my shop discount! I
actually became aware of them from another parent at my daughters school. I
kept seeing their car with the rack on it, and honestly thought it was custom
made. I finally waited by their car one day to ask them about it. (Is that
creepy?) They were totally happy to chat about it and gave me a full demo
taking their bike on and off, and the rack on and off. I was sold and frankly
amazed they are not more prevalent.

The 1UP not only ticked my known requirements, but surprised me with some I
didn't know. It fits very close to the car when the tray is in use and pivots
up even closer when empty. I LOVE that it can be removed in seconds, folded,
and stowed in my tiny hatchback trunk when not in use. Although my need is one
bike at the moment, being modular, I can add two more trays if need be. It's
also extremely stout with nary a wiggle from the bike once locked in. On top of
all that, it looks like it should have "paul" machined into it someplace. It's
the new retro of hitch racks.

For the record, I have no affiliation with these guys and paid full retail.

2015-06-13 Thread olofstroh
Out for two hours this morning, tried to observe what I did. Found that I do
lift my foot so that there is no pressure on the pedal, but foot still in
kontakt with the pedal. On the flats and on the hills. Must be an automatic
brain thing.

And first time this year in only a t-shirt and shorts!

Summer issue

Steve wrote (and Patrick more added some interesting comments):
Let's face it: those who like "flat pedals" - pedals without retention devices
- aren't after "performance" gains that can be measured objectively. They're
after comfort and convenience. Some riders can make them work quite
effectively, and are happy to accept whatever objective performance deficits
they may have.

I have flat BMX pedals (albeit, without pins) on my shopper. I would never
ride long distances on such a pedal: my feet slip off, and they often sit
crooked on the pedals and I end up stepping on the crank arm or the chain stay.
I'm very happy to have a pedal retention system take care of positioning my
feet, while allowing me to lift my foot without worrying about it losing its
place on the pedal or coming off entirely.
I doubt the lifting of my feet substantially adds to power, as die hard
advocates proclaim, but that's not the only reason to do it.

I'm surprised this discussion has had so much staying power. It's a relatively
trivial issue, as far as I'm concerned.

...

I don´t know your respective bicycling history but methinks this is to a high
degree a brain thing. When learning a new thing the brain grows new synapses to
cope. This takes time. At age 46 I became obsessed with dancing; quick-step,
tango, slowfox, rumba, chacha, that sort of thing, also lindy hop. Trained
maybe 8-10 hours per week for some years. I´m not without talent but it took
some three years before I could call myself a good dancer, the synapses had to
grew first.

The same with cycling. I started to ride intensively at age 5 and have never
stopped (now 72). Didn´t meet retention until over 30. I´m a natural spinner
and rides both roads and trails. On flat rubber pedals, never got enamoured by
retention. This comes very natural and effortless. Can´t remember when a foot
slipped.

May it be that your brain over time grews connections to cope effectively with
the system you´re using and that changing system can feel strange and
inefficient for a long time, maybe years, until the new system literally grows
on you?
