Re: [RBW] How are albatross and albastache bars for long distance riding?

2015-06-18 Thread Mike Williams
Daniel, bars are personal, everyone has there preferences and i cant speak for
Albastaches, But I can for Albatross and for me, they are just about the
perfect mixed surface touring bar, good for 100 mile days without even
thinking about it.Ive tried drops, never could get comfy. This is why I like
Albas, they let you sit high and really see around you a bit more. As for
hand positions theres a solid 3 or 4 for me, and also I set the bars at saddle
height or a little higher and this takes pressure off hands/ wrists and Im not
really wanting to move my hands around all the time. I say give them a shot!
you might love them or decide theyre not really your thing. Gd luck,

The tandem looks great, Tony. We just bought a Bossa Nova this spring from
a neighbor. For now, both of our tandems are set up with kid-back cranks
so that our kids can ride with us. Maybe eventually, my wife and I will
ride together.

We have 32 mm Paselas on the Burley, but I think they're probably big
enough for its riders (combined weight is probably around 150 lbs).

[RBW] WTB 58 or 60 CM Sam Hillborne (really love the single TT model)

2015-06-18 Thread Nick Morehouse
As long as I've been into bikes I've wanted a Rivendell. Last year I
decided to finally get one but due to financial limitations I chose the
SOMA San Marcos. I have really enjoyed my San Marcos but I want something
with more versatility (bigger tires, more cargo capacity, etc) for rough
roads and touring. I wanted a Sam to start with but as usual I went
cheap. The San Marcos has been great but I'm ready to upgrade. I am
looking for a complete build but would be happy with a frame as well. I
live in MD and would prefer something I don't have to pay to ship half way
around the world.then again, I really want a reasonably priced Sam
so.if you got one and your itching to get rid of it. Let me know!

[RBW] Re: Velo Orange 'Campeur' vs. the Clem

2015-06-18 Thread Jack B
I own the VO frame you mentioned, but only have been riding it a month or
so. It's a good bike, maybe even a great bike, but it's no Riv.

Before I knew about the Clem, I convinced myself I couldn't afford a Riv,
and bought the VO on sale in December and then built it up over the last
few months as I found deals on new & used parts. Then just as I was
finishing the build, I had a chance to test ride a Sam, and man I think I
should've saved up for that bike instead! I haven't ridden a Clem, so can't
honestly compare it with the Campeur, but have to assume it still has that
"Riv feel" that we hear about on this group.

I have the VO set up with drop bars, after mostly riding an old Trek TX500
bike w/ Albatross bars. I have the drops raised up quite high with a
technomic stem, but it still feels like a big reach maybe that's just
because I'm used to the upright bars, but I didn't feel that way on a Sam
with drops.

I think the Clem has the VO beat on aesthetics, hands down. Better looking
fork, lugs, colors, nice looking swoop on the seat stays, just more
handsome all around. Mine is the 63cm size and it's funny to me how it
doesn't look like a tall frame... maybe that's good, but I think I'd rather
see a taller headtube and a sloping top tube, which would help get the bars
up too. I think a tall Riv (e.g. 62cm Sam) does this really well. Clem
doesn't have that size option, so maybe not a fair comparison there.

All of that said, the VO is great at a lot of things: Carries a load, no
probs with heelstrike on my panniers. All kinds of thought put into it
about racks, fenders, wheel clearance, etc. It's worth mentioning that it
is built for Canti brakes, which could be a deal-breaker for some. I think
you could swap out for centerpulls up front, but the rear would be trickier.

[RBW] How are albatross and albastache bars for long distance riding?

2015-06-18 Thread Daniel D.
Day Dreaming about how I would build up a sam. Thinking about why I want
the sam realized it would be for fun long rides. If I'm running errands
I'd use my cheaper bikes. Loaded touring I have a bike for that. Are drop
bars a safer bet for long distance riding? Don't have much experience
with upright bars. Seems like the upright bars limit the options for hand
position.

[RBW] Re: Velo Orange 'Campeur' vs. the Clem

2015-06-18 Thread Sarah Bogdanovich
I used to have a 63cm campeur and it was great. Very nice fit/finish on the
frame. The only reason I sold it is because I found a deal on my dream
frame - a STT Rivendell Hillborne in orange. Tire clearance on the VO will
be less than you find on the Clem. I don't think you will regret the
campeur, but it isn't a rivendell :)

[RBW] Re: Car Racks & Rivs

Great question - we've had the same question for quite some time and just
haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.

Jinxed's response got me curious about 1Up with fenders -- I found this:
http://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/902008-1up-usa-rack-fender-cushions-question.html
.

I've often wondered about Yakima and Thule hitch racks that have trays but
use a clamp on the top tube instead of the tires, likes this:
http://www.yakima.com/shop/bike/hitch/twotimer or
http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/hitch-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-doubletrack-2-bike-990xt-_-5776509
.

Good luck and keep us posted!

[RBW] FS Sturmey Archer S3X and other bits

2015-06-18 Thread 'john elliott' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi,
I have a Sturmey Archer S3X that I bought for my Rivendell Quickbeam. Its
put together with a Velocity Dyad rim with 36 spokes. It comes with the
bar end shifter and all of the small parts needed except the cable
housing. It was partly mounted but never ridden. 120mm spacing

If you are in need of a more complete wheelset, I also have a 36 hole
vintage but fully functional front wheel that could go with it.

Another front wheel option I have is the suzue front hub from my original
green quickbeam. The rim from that wheel needed replacing so I pulled the
hub out of the wheel, it's fully functional, but used of course. I was
thinking that it could be built up with a velocity dyad rim and be a match
for the S3X on a quickbeam. (though that's a 32 hole rim).

I also have a brand new 700 c vittoria tire on the S3X with an old patched
tube in it and I have 2 fairly worn out jack brown blue tires that are
still somewhat usable that I'm willing to throw in if anyone wants them.

I also have a nitto technomic deluxe stem that was used for a couple of
hundred miles and has a ring around it from its use in the past, but is
otherwise just about perfect.

Maybe $20 for the stem. $150 for the S3X, and I'll throw in the tube and
tire that's on it. I'll throw in the front wheel too for another $25.

Thanks

[RBW] FS: Jones Loop H-Bar (Silver, 710 width) Lightly Used

2015-06-18 Thread RDS
For Sale: Recently purchased a silver Jones Loop bar in aluminum with the
710 width (can be cut shorter). This is the version which has the fully
enclosed front loop portion of the bars. I have ridden with the bar less
than 20 miles on all smoothly paved rail trail. So, minor scuffs of
installing brakes and stem. The bars just aren't going to work out for
this particular bike. I am not currently at home, so it will be later
tonight before I will be at home to take pics. Purchased for $125 from the
Jones store. $100 shipped to anywhere in the 48 continental USA states.
Contact me via private message to request pics or to make an offer for the
bars. Prefer Paypal.

[RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-06-18 Thread Spencer Hawkes
My wife and I biked from Portland down into Northern California last summer
and here are a few things that might apply to SF-LA:
-We followed the 'Bicycling the Pacific Coast' book pretty closely and
showered almost every night. The state parks all were shower equipped, just
bring along a hand-full of quarters. (Although most were free, some weren't)
-I brought a super light wool baselayer (smartwool) for sleeping and
wandering around camp in the mornings. Slipping into something clean at
night always felt good.
-Bring half a brillo pad for cookware cleaning
-Some sort of multi-use soap for dishes/hands
-I'm glad I brought a rag for bike repairs/wiping chain
-as mentioned before, headlamp
-Although not totally necessary, I brought a hand pump with a gauge. I'm
not crazy into tire pressure being exact or anything, but the gauge was
nice. (crankbrothers sells a great one)
-Small bottle of 100% aloe gel. I'm not great at applying sunscreen
regularly, so this saved me, and it feels amazing to throw some on your
forehead or neck even mid-ride if things are getting really hot.
-Lastly, not a piece of gear, but we always ate good food, and never
worried about carrying extra food weight. Sweet potatoes and butter are
awesome in tinfoil dinners, ice cream right outside the grocery store, nice
sausages saurkraut and lemonade all made the trip that much more wonderful.
Figure out what you want to indulge in a bit and go for it. For us it was
food.

As a parting note, the crankbrothers multi-17 is the best multitool I've
ever used, and the chain breaker is better than any other. I find myself
reaching for it over my home mechanic chain tool from park pretty regularly
now. Also it can be tightened if the tools come a bit loose after a few
years, and as far as I'm aware has a lifetime guarantee (haven't had to use
this in 6 years, but a friend has his replaced for free)

Have an awesome trip! Someday I hope to ride the section you'll be doing!

-Spencer

Is the lumpy supple tire syndrome something that people just deal with

It's the rims, not the tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire trouble & puzzlement

2015-06-18 Thread Steve Palincsar
Synergy 650B -- first thing to suspect is deep well mounting issues.
Eyeball the junction of rim and tire while spinning the wheel: there's a
molded-in line on the sidewall. Watch the line as the wheel goes
around. Odds are (this is a /very/ common condition) you'll see the
line dip down below the edge of the rim and then rise up again.

There are 3 things you can do:
- reduce pressure down to around 20 or so and hand-manipulate the tire,
basically gripping it and pulling upwards

- run the pressure up to 120 psi or so
- do as Jan suggests in this blog post:
https://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/mounting-tires-on-rims-with-deep-wells/

There is, of course, an outside chance it's something else. But those
mounting issues with the Velocity Synergy are so very common.

you have.

If that's the case, then what you want to do is:

1. Mark the sidewall of the tire and the spot on the rim with a sharpie
2. Remove the tire
3. Remount the tire as best as you can but with the tire rotated 90
degrees from where it was

4. Check again for a low spot. Did you find one?
5. If yes,
  a. is it at the same mark on the tire? Maybe it's a bad tire
  b. is it at the same mark on the rim? Maybe there's a rim flaw
  c. is it at neither mark? Then it's probably the well known
'too-deep synergy rim well' documented all over the place. Build up
the well with more rim tape. I use gaffer tape for this purpose.

so far.

A visual inspection of the tire and wheel didn't show any obvious
anomalies, so I checked the head set and decided to tighten it
just a bit. That didn't have any noticeable affect on the thump.
Then I swapped wheels with my Saluki, which also has pari-moto
tires. Rode both bikes over the same short, hilly course. The
thump definitely went with the wheel. Next I took the tire off.
Pari-motos go on very easily but are hard to get straight.. I
put the wheel in my little Minoura wheel stand. It is perfectly
round and nearly perfectly true. I carefully remounted the tire,
working to get it as perfectly straight as I can. Then I put the
wheel and tire up on the stand. The tire moves in and out about
2-3 mm away from the side wall and about 2-3 mm away from round.
I retested it and still got the high speed vibration.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire trouble & puzzlement

2015-06-18 Thread Kieran J
I've been using whatever tubeless tape that came with the wheels (they were
bought second-hand). It isn't cloth tape. The bead doesn't seem to seat
uniformly all the way around the rim, and dips below the edge in portions
of the circumference.

FWIW, my Babyshoe Pass tires mount easier than the Hetres, with some but
negligible runout once inflated. I've tried two different sets of Hetres,
and they all stay at least a little lumpy no matter what I do.

Since I'm new to supple tires, I'm new to this "problem". I'm used to tires
(esp. with wire beads) just popping on and off you go with a perfectly
round tire..

Hi Kieran,

On the A23, what are you using for a rim strip? There seems to be some issues
on tubeless ready rims when using thicker rim strips like Velox. I'd recommend
using 2 layers of Stan's tape and then trying again. We have several bikes in
our rental queue with A23s and have had no issues mounting up tires. On my own
A23s I have Compass Stampede Pass tires and Gran Bois Cerf Green Label tires
mounted and all went on seemlessly when using the Stan's tape.

Thanks for looking, Jim!

I do a decent amount of evening rides, they're not too bad. In fact
this was just the day before:

That said, a 65F morning is definitely nicer to ride in than a 90F evening :-)
I usually don't mind riding in the warm weather as it comes on through
the morning. I used to do it a lot more, but my riding preferences
have narrowed as I've matured. That or I'm lazier.

[RBW] Tire trouble & puzzlement

2015-06-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
I am getting a thumping vibration from a front wheel at speeds above 25mph.
The wheel is nearly new with a White hub and Synergy rim. The tire is a
brand new Pari-Moto. It was on my converted Trek 620. I can't see any
obvious cause and here's what I've done so far.

A visual inspection of the tire and wheel didn't show any obvious
anomalies, so I checked the head set and decided to tighten it just a bit.
That didn't have any noticeable affect on the thump. Then I swapped
wheels with my Saluki, which also has pari-moto tires. Rode both bikes over
the same short, hilly course. The thump definitely went with the wheel.
Next I took the tire off. Pari-motos go on very easily but are hard to
get straight.. I put the wheel in my little Minoura wheel stand. It is
perfectly round and nearly perfectly true. I carefully remounted the tire,
working to get it as perfectly straight as I can. Then I put the wheel and
tire up on the stand. The tire moves in and out about 2-3 mm away from the
side wall and about 2-3 mm away from round. I retested it and still got
the high speed vibration.

[RBW] Re: COUNTRY ROADS ON A COUNTRY BIKE

2015-06-18 Thread Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado
Hugh,
Thanks for the compliments!!
I guess it depends where you live in Colorado Yes the eastern side of the
rockies is called "the front range"..The western side ( Grand Junction) is
called the Western Slope. That's what the weather people say on T.V.
We in Larkspur are around 6825 FT. When you go over Monument hill it's
around 7200ft.
When you see Patrick riding he rides somewhere around 7000 and 9000 FT. For
some it takes some acclimation to get used to the altitude if you are from
sea level.
I love my Thumbies.I previously had bar ends on my tandem and I enjoy not
having to move my hand to the end of the bar to shift. When climbing and
want to shift my weight or just want a change of hand position I move my
hands forward of the brake levers.
You are in LAI lived in Long Beach for 20 years.

Re: [RBW] Early Morning Ride

2015-06-18 Thread Jim Bronson
Love your pics. My dad was born and spent his early years right next door
in San Bernadino. It's an area I enjoy visiting.

That being said, I wouldn't shy away from evening riding. I find that I
like to force myself out of my comfort zone, and the more I do so, the more
comfortable I am in the extreme heat. Sun sleeves would also work really
well in your very dry climate.

This year for us in Texas, it's more the humidity than the heat though,
some days don't even get out of the 80s but the air is so thick you could
cut it with a knife. My sun sleeves are useless with this humidity, they
make me hotter than I would be otherwise.

Jon,

Like the others say beautiful country!! It's roads like this that get me
going.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/126595234@N07/18840111256/in/photostream/

I want to jump through the image and start riding. What's the elevation? So
this area as Patrick calls it is the front range? I thought the Western
side of the Rockies was the front range. Says the guy on the Western side :)

The Sam looks gorgeous, curious how do you like the paul thumbies mounted
on the Albatross bars? I found that they eliminated the wonderful hand
position just fore of the brake mount. Did you have bar ends prior? Thanks
for the post.

One of these days I hope to ride Colorado.

+1! My fav combo for hot weather riding. I even used both on a mixed
terrain Manny ride last summer in SF. The Birks are not ideal for pushing a
laden bike up a 45* scrabbley dirt incline, but they were awesome for
everything else.
