[RBW] Re: The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-09 Thread Doug Williams
Way to go, Leah! I'm a bicycle safety instructor and I teach Safe Routes to
School classes. Biking to school is great for kids for SO many reasons.
Adults have different priorities, but for the kids it is the freedom to go
where they want when they want; rather than have to wait for some adult to
give them a ride. My kids are both "self-propelled".

[RBW] Re: The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
Awesome! My wife loves riding with our four daughters (two of them on the
back of her cargo bike) to Mass. It's similarly all down hill there, all up
hill back. I've taught them to "take the lane," riding in the right tire
spot of a car rather than as far over as they can. Much less stressful for
them and cars go around them slower and with more space then they did when
we hugged the right tight.

With abandon,
Patrick

2015-09-09 Thread Beth H
Leah is totally The Cool Mom.

When I was a kid, I wanted to ride to and from school to avoid the bullies
in the back of the school bus. My mother invited me to select a safe route,
draw a map (school was three miles from home) and then, early one Sunday
morning she would follow behind me in the family car to make sure I was
okay. It all worked out beautifully. Sadly, my mother never learned to ride
a bike; but she supported my love for bicycles completely.

I hope you get some takers on dinner and conversation; what a great way to
build community!

Really cool. We can change things, one person at a time.
Americans tend to be so overweight and, sadly, the kids are overweight, eat

what a great way to start the day.
My daughter-in-law is responsible for the "walking school bus" program for

Note: If your QR does have a curved male surface at both lever and nut

made for later models and not for the Solo.

[RBW] Re: The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-09 Thread Doug Williams
Yes, you were wrong...You should not have gently defended your case. You
should have vigorously defended your case.

I usually wear a helmet, but I have zero tolerance for non-cyclists who
insist that all bike riders should wear a helmet. For kids, helmet use is
required under California law. For adults, it is not...nor should it be.
Tell your uncle that you are an adult and you don't have to wear a helmet
on your bike.

Tell him that bike helmets are MUCH less effective than he has been told.
Ask him why he doesn't wear a helmet in his car, since many more lives
would be saved if motorists all wore helmets than will ever be saved by
bicycle helmets. Ask him why he doesn't wear a helmet while walking,
because being a pedestrian is more dangerous than being a cyclist (and MUCH
more so if you compare pedestrian deaths per mile and cyclist deaths per
mile). Annual cyclist deaths: 600, pedestrians: 4,500, motorists: 30,000.
Annual deaths from obesity and lack of exercise: 300,000. Given the fact
that helmet laws have been proven to reduce ridership...they actually kill
people by increasing the number of obesity related deaths.

Also annoying are people who blame the bicyclist killed by an SUV by
saying, "If only he was wearing a helmet!" As if the magic invisible safety
runes on the helmet would have prevented the death somehow. Helmets are
fine, but they are definitely dead last on the Five Layers of Safety.
People commenting about bicycle accidents should address Layers 1-4 before
that talk about how the "magic helmet" could have helped.

Doug

The Five Layers of Safety:

*Layer 1: Control Your Bicycle* (Don’t fall or collide with others)

If you can skillfully control your bike by starting, stopping, and turning
properly, you will not fall down all by yourself or run into others. Do
this and you cut out about half of your injury risk. To ride in groups, a
cyclist must have good bike handling skills.

*Layer 2: Follow the Rules* (Don’t cause traffic accidents)

Follow traffic laws, obey signs and signals, use headlights and taillights
at night, and use the correct lanes for turns and through movements and you
won’t cause a collision with a motorist. About half of cyclist/motorist
crashes are caused by cyclists who violate the basic rules of the road. But
you don’t do that, right? Combine Layers 1 and 2 and you cut about 75% of
your injury risk.

*Layer 3: Lane Positioning* (Discourage other driver’s mistakes)

Knowing when to use the full lane or to share a lane is something few
cyclists fully understand. Your position in a lane is the best way to make
yourself conspicuous, to tell drivers what you are doing, and to discourage
them from making unsafe movements. Many of these effective lane positioning
principles have been forgotten by the modern cycling community, so they may
be contrary to what you’ve been taught! Combine Layers 1, 2 and 3 and you
cut out about 99% of all potential crashes.

*Layer 4: Hazard Avoidance* (Avoid the other driver’s mistakes)

There are evasive maneuvers you should know that can help you avoid major
motorist mistakes or dodge obstacles. Knowing how to stop and turn quickly
helps you avoid motorist mistakes that aren’t discouraged by lane
positioning. These skills are not instinctive and must be taught.

*Layer 5: Passive Safety* (Protection when all else fails)

This is actually the least effective layer. Helmets and gloves protect your
most vulnerable body parts as a last resort in case of the very rare
failure of Layers 1 through 4, but they do nothing to help you avoid
crashes.

[RBW] Re: FS: 56 Atlantis

2015-09-09 Thread 'frank_a' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm with Mark, the proportions of your particular set-up…i.e. Black B-17
at that saddle height and the relationship of the Albatross bar height with
the Maxxis High Rollers and just dusty enough, man that looked perfect. I
fav'd a few of the Flickr shots.
I always loved the 56 Atl and I did my best to make it fit but it's just
not the right size for me. As strange as it may sound, I've owned three
56's over the years. I also have owned two 58's. Selling an Atlantis is a
strange thing, some can do it and never look back. I'm not one of those. I
now have a 61 and bounce back and forth from Noodles to Albas and always
fatties.
I wish Grant had split the difference between the 58 and 61 with a 59.5
(like he did with between the 53 and 56 by adding the 54.5 size).
Good luck with the sale…….

[RBW] Re: The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-09 Thread LeahFoy
Doug - all so true. I did point out two articles that - one written by a brain
surgeon as to why helmets aren't all that helpful. He hasn't responded. Another
friend of mine said she was "shocked" that I don't wear a helmet. She wanted to
know what kind of roads I travel. I said:

"We use the extra-wide sidewalk that no one uses but us. Sadly, it's very
car-centric here and there are no bike lanes. There's only one way up and one
way down our mountain, so everyone is getting to school and work on these roads
and doing 40-55 mph. Using the empty, extra-wide sidewalk is a no-brainer. Kids
wear helmets because I think they are far more likely to do something dumb and
crash, but even that isn't terribly concerning to me. If we were at risk for
anything, it would be being crushed by a car at an intersection while we walk
our bikes through the crosswalk. Helmets are of little, if any, help when a
two-ton vehicle is on top of you. We are super-careful of cars. We wear those
Amish-esque slow-moving-vehicle triangles and we have very loud bells we ring
to let people know we are there. We make eye contact with drivers before
walking our bikes in the crosswalks, so we KNOW they see us. In the Netherlands
and other bike-centric places of the world, almost no one wears helmets."

I do own one, though. I never think to wear it, but it probably WOULD make me
even more visible. As far as helmets go, isn't it cute?

[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-09 Thread Surlyprof
I was eyeing the one Soma makes at one time but decided I didn't carry
heavy loads often enough to justify it:
 http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/porteur-rack-stainless-steel I
liked the fork struts and lower horizontal bars for panniers. They even
have a fence to complete the Wald replacement aesthetic.
 http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/fence-for-porteur-rack-stainless-steel
However, at a combined price of $245.98, I'd go with Andrew's suggestion
of adding an aluminum plate or Kurt's milk crate. Nice upcycling aesthetic.

2015-09-09 Thread Pondero
Mark, I rode it for a couple hours the morning before this post. It was moving
so well on the new tires that I was pondering drop bars and keeping it.

I have a sale pending, and assuming the deal is closed, I'm really going to
miss it.

Most excellent. Hope that dinner event comes together, & great that you've
now encouraged others to try riding with their kids. It's a movement!

Great, Jeff, thanks.

Once I get my guys coordinated, I post a few more details. Then maybe take the
discussion offline to include only actual participants.

The eyes lie. Watch the wheels! But if you are walking and making eye
contact you are probably safe.
