[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-01 Thread Tony DeFilippo
For Will and Patrick, any issues ordering from Hilltrek or customer service
notes. I like the idea of that sort jacket but hate to purchase something that
spendy both site unseen and from overseas. Can you confirm if the euro VAT gets
removed for US purchasers?

And one more thing if your willing, it's tough for me to understand based on
their site what makes up the 160 pound delta between the analogy smock and the
double centile greenspot. I see a nikwax pump liner mentioned but not
explained. Thanks!

Also how is this type of jacket similar or different from the Riv fancy rain
jacket other than style?

I've purchased many things from UK suppliers over the years including a
Ventile jacket, and in every case the VAT has been removed. Obviously,
before buying a 200 GBP jacket I'd make sure by contacting them first,
but that Hilltrek Greenspot Double Ventile certainly is a nice looking
jacket, and it's available with (extra cost) custom sizing for sleeves
and jacket length.

Probably very similar, perhaps even identical (hard to say, since it's
not on the Riv site any longer).

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-01 Thread Garth

You asked what did people wear in the rain in days of yore before the
"waterproof/breathable" idea and sales pitch ?

Most of the time when I rode in the rain, I'm speaking of the late 70's
early 80's, I had a Bellwether "water resistant" jacket that of course
wetted out , but it really never bothered me . I rode centuries in it in
the rain and in the 50 somethin' degrees. I had the pants also but rarely
wore them. I did have some Protog leg warmers I'd wear in the rain and
cold at times and I was fine.

I don't recall considering hands or feet at all , and wore regular shoes
and gloves if I felt like it.

Bottom line . . . . I just rode . The "conditions" are whatever they are
, and so what if they are ! I am as I am regardless of any and all
"conditions" , nothing can take away or add to this !

Just Ride and Be !

_

No, you don't need special stuff at all, and don't need to be covered head
to toe . If you want to be that's okay too . No one needs a
this-or-that-brand-mine-is-holiest-of-all garment or whatever . . .. but
it you do , so what ! It too is alright .

You'll never get it wrong and you'll never get it right :)

[RBW] Re: Tires for the Hillborne

2015-10-01 Thread Surlyprof
Michael,

I have what I believe to be a 2012 56 Hillborne (orange with canti posts).
I use Barlow Pass tires on one set of wheels and 40mm Schwalbe Mondials on
the other. The fenders are SKS 50s. The Barlow Pass tires were no problem
but I had to lengthen the hole in the front connector with a die grinder (a
Dremel will work) to enable me to get the clearance for the Mondials. Now,
the front fender is pushed almost all the way up to the bottom of the fork
crown and I have plenty of clearance. During the summer when I am not
commuting (and it doesn't rain), I took off the fenders and used 45mm Smart
Sams. They don't rub on the frame but occasionally rub on the double
kickstand when I pedal hard from a stop. May be another job for the die
grinder (or a set of Rock n Roads)!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tony, great questions! First, Cotton analogy is in my experience superior
to double ventile because of the capillary action that draws liquid
moisture away to the outer layers. So a double ventile jacket will keep the
wet out, it is less efficient at getting the wet out. Hilltrek, I believe,
is the only company to offer Cotton Analogy.

I called Hilltrek and asked all sorts of questions. I explained my
multi-purpose and they steered me away from the snug Greenspot and to the
bulkier, but multi purpose Liathach. Everything about their customer
service has been excellent and we've purchased from them multiple times.
(Note, their pants/breeches are extremely tight fitting and they don't
offer a loose fitting version. They tried what ended up being a one-off
experiment pair of breeches for me, and with modification on our en I have
a great pair of ventile breeches with enough room for cycling, running,
squatting, sitting, but they don't offer it and seemed appalled at my
adding 6" of fabric into the entirety of the inner leg area to make them
work.) However, the Liathach jacket works great over a t-shirt, or over my
heavy boiled wool sweater in winter. Lots of flexibility. Talk with them
about your planned activities and your measurements and they will give
recommendations. Feel free to email me off list if you have specific
questions, though obviously my experience is limited and you milage may
vary.

Deleting the VAT is smooth and easy. I suspect the price difference you see
is for the capillary action liner of the Cotton Analogy Jacket, which is a
proprietary technology licensed from Paramo for use with ventile. "Analogy"
refers to the liner working like animal fur, actively pushing/wicking
moisture (vapor and liquid) away from the body to the outer layers. It
really is amazing stuff and well worth the cost difference, at least in a
jacket (my gators and breeches are double ventile).

The Rivendell ventile jacket does not have the fur-analogy liner, and I
don't recall how many layers of ventile it has.

The main issue you'll have with Hilltrek is their timing and production
line. If they are making to order (custom or not), they are a small shop
and things can take a while. Well worth the wait. It's similar to waiting
for a Rivendell frame/build. Small shoppe, amazing results.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Confession! I bought a mountain bike

2015-10-01 Thread Jeremy Till
Don't worry, I have a "Dark Side" bike too, although I drew the line at
having a metal (aluminum) frame. None of that carbon stuff for me.
Raleigh Talus 29 Comp from a couple of model years back. The only major
mods I've made are better tires (Specialized Captains) and Jones Bars. It
really lets me take advantage of riding in places like Auburn, some of the
best riding near Sacramento:

https://flic.kr/p/wPMqsu

Part of the motivation for me was that as a professional mechanic in a bike
market increasingly dominated by things like hydraulic discs, I felt it
behooved me to be more familiar with these technologies.

I've ridden full suspension bikes, and they hold little attraction for me.
The certainly let you plow over rough lines and hold your speed better,
but for me that feels like the textbook definition of risk compensation and
I've already ended up in the ER once from mountain biking (ask Manny) so
I'd rather not increase my risk. The hardtail feels like the perfect
balance of making riding rough stuff comfortable, doable, and enjoyable,
without coddling you and rewarding proper line selection and speed control.
Although having ridden some fully rigid 29+ bikes I'd say that I could
probably do nicely with one of those, or maybe just a Krampus fork and 29+
front wheel for this bike.

I would argue that on longer events you will be more aerobic than
anaerobic, and thus sweating less at any given moment. With a Cotton
Analogy jacket in all day rain I have stayed wonderfully dry. I spent
several years trying everything I could, and the lesson I learned is I
should have bought the Cotton Analogy from the beginning. The difference
really is that striking.

[RBW] Seagull Canceled

2015-10-01 Thread Steve Palincsar

Sea Gull Century Canceled for Saturday, October 3

10/1/2015 1:41:00 PM

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Sea Gull Century bike ride has
been canceled for Saturday, October 3.

“We do not do this lightly," said Amy Waters, Century coordinator. "The
safety of our 6,000 cyclists, some 200 volunteers, support staff,
spectators and others is our top priority."

“We have been in close communication with the Maryland Emergency
Management Agency regarding two potential weather events in our region.
The National Weather Service currently has issued a flood watch for
portions of Delmarva through Saturday evening, with 4-7 inches of rain
forecasted. Winds up to 35 mph are predicted on Saturday. There also is
a hazardous weather outlook for the mid-Atlantic for the possible
impacts of Hurricane Joaquin, including additional flooding, heavy rain
and wind. Travel to and from Maryland’s Eastern Shore may be treacherous.

[Related Links]“The Century relies annually upon many regional
collaborations to help ensure the safety of riders and others. These
partners include police agencies, rest stop operations, and more. Given
the possibility of weather-related emergencies and the preparations that
are being made throughout the region, the demands upon these partners
are high. Both the state and national parks on Assateague Island, one of
our most popular rest stops, are closing in advance of the storm, for
example. We do not want to further burden our partners.

“We sincerely regret this inconvenience for our riders.”

All 2015 registrants will receive an email with additional information.
The date for next year’s Century is October 8, 2016.

[RBW] Re: Confession! I bought a mountain bike

2015-10-01 Thread RJM
Nice bike...Niner makes a nice ride. I know a few people who are riding
Niners, mainly Jet 9s but a few have the Air 9 too, and they really like
them. Be prepared for nice braking...those hydros do work well when riding
singletrack. The Deore group is solid and works well and so does the Recon
Gold fork, and if you really start shredding trails you can always upgrade
the fork if you feel the need in the future. You bought a real nice frame.

I have to work on the 10th.
Plus, there is no way I could do 20mph average speed over a 100 mile
course. Maybe , maybe 17mph, with a tailwind.

Looks like the DCRandonneurs are still going on their 200k. But I am not
fit enough for that amount of climbing over 125 miles yet.

Maybe I will try to do the RUSA Ride Around Resevoirs 104k perm/pop near
Laurel on Sunday. Supposed to clear up on Sunday.

I've had an Air9 (aluminum with rigid steel fork) for more than 5 years.
Mine has been a single speed for most of its life and weighs about 18
pounds. It's a great bike, one of my favorites ever. It is a race bike, and
handles like one. I find it nimble, but some who ride it call it twitchy,
so ymmv. It has taken me on many daylong excursions up Mt. Diablo, through
the Sierras, and on plenty of single track.

I also have a Bombadil, and it, too, is one of my favorite bikes ever. It
handles like a Rivendell, which to me is smooth and sure, but not as fast
to respond as the Niner. Still, I would not hesitate to take the Bombadil
any place I've taken the Niner. I think of the Bombadil as more versatile
than the Air9. I currently keep 2.25" knobbies on it, but it also rides
great with Hetres, which I have on my spare wheel set.

If I was going to race the Tour Divide, I'd take the Niner, but for most
other long tours I'd take the Bombadil. Both are great bikes.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-01 Thread Lynne Fitz
Wool layers are pretty good. Baselayer, sometimes two, and a wool jersey.

I know someone doesn't get wet in the rain, but I hypothesize that that person
lives somewhere that doesn't get the persistent rain that happens on the east
and upper west coasts. Man, there is NOTHING like riding the final 13 hours of
a 24 hour event in the rain. Nothing was dry. We stopped in a Subway 20 miles
out, and puddles formed wherever we stood or sat. They were super nice, and
just put out "wet floor" signs.

Also, in the East Coast, I discovered that the humidity is so high that NOTHING
DRIES. Not that I was getting rained on for most of that adventure.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seagull Canceled

2015-10-01 Thread Lungimsam
I'd definitely be interested, Steve. But checking my schedule, my weekends in
October are booked. RUSA perm pop hopefully this Sunday, Lifeline 100 on the
18th, work and worship team at church the other weekends.

You doing the Lifeline 100?

Lynn, that's true! But organized rides really get me going. I do the shorter
perm/pops alone, though. Done a few 100-120 k RUSA rides. I'm looking forward
to the RUSA 200k Flatbread this November. I'm trying to arrange the day off
work so I can make it! There seem to be centuries around but I have to keep
surfing the clubs/web to see what's around on the weekends I don't work.
