[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lynne, you don't say of whom you speak. "Someone doesn't get wet in the
rain," aye? No need for snarky passive aggressive. I'll make a leap and
presume you refer to me. Grin.

Though you didn't ask for it, I presume your hypothesis needs more data.
Here is some. Currently here in sunny, dry Colorado it is 46˚F with 95%
humidity, foggy to an extent we can't see the mountain across the way 100
yards from us. While it hasn't rained constantly here the last three days
it has rained several times for several hours. And the times I'm referring
to staying dry during were periods of solid, steady rain for 12 hours or
more, multiple days in a row. Put the tent away wet, set it up wet kind of
rain for several days. It's common it the Colorado mountains (less on the
front range) in Spring and Autumn. Not like the "typical" 20 minute summer
deluge thunderstorms. That's a different kind of rain. And, lest we forget,
ventile is from Scotland, precisely the type of climate that has this type
of lingering, steady, multi-day rain more often than Colorado. It still
exists because a smart niche of alpine climbers have recognized it's value
and that it keeps them dryer and warmer when active in the wet than
anything else.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: vertical/wall-mount bike hanging hook for fat tire bikes?

2015-10-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
If you already have them, I would recommend bending it to accommodate your
tire. Buy a can of plasti-dip if you end up sacrificing the rubberized
covering.

The first bend I would consider would be pulling the hook more
perpendicular to the wall. Like this one: different hook

At the angle you show, I imagine with fat tires, that hook would get
tangled up with the adjacent spokes. Having the hook a lot more
perpendicular to the wall would make it more parallel with the spokes,
making spoke interference less of an issue.

[RBW] Bleriot for sale

2015-10-02 Thread soqer...@gmail.com
I am selling my 61 Bleriot.
I have attached a scan of the original invoice with the parts. The only
differences are (I believe):
1) Actually has Maxy Fasty tires (Fatty Rumpkins are included)
2) Pedals are now flip-flop
3) No Pletscher rack or pump
4) Comes with grey Nigel Smythe bag and silver hoop
5) Topeak speedometer included
6) SKS fenders included
7) Brooks saddle cover included

I have ridden this maybe 500 miles. Degenerative discs are keeping me off
bikes.
Here's more info. When I had this built, I had a long discussion with
Grant about hand positions, shifters, etc.
Accordingly, this has a unique set up. There is a thumb shifter for the
rear, and a bar end for the front, and a single interrupter brake also. I
believe there was a write up in the Reader at one point - sort of has to be
seen to be understood
Having said that, pictures available
$1,750.
I will only sell in person in the Bay Area, and will meet within 5 miles of
RBW.
Thanks
John

I'm on my third Luxos U in a year and a half and at PBP this one started having
issues too, I just haven't ridden at night enough since to confirm that it's
bad. The upside is that they have been replaced by Peter White immediately and
with no hassle. Also, when they work, I love them. Charging my phone is a must
on brevets. I wouldn't want to (and won't) do without that option. Also the
light has a wonderful beam. That being said, I don't think I'll get a Luxos for
the new rando bike I'm getting. I'm leaning toward the Edelux and a separate
USB charger (if that's possible.)

DC area friends, the plan provided above is still a "go". Briefly...

-Tuesday, October 6

-Bethesda Bagels 8:30 to 9:15

-Fletchers Boathouse 9:45ish to 10ish

-Lunch likely in Leesburg (not sure when)

-Camp at Indian Flats H/B site

The long range weather forecast seems to suggest that the rainy weekend
will improve...just in time. We'll see you there.
