[RBW] Re: Coffee outside.

2015-10-22 Thread Cecily Walker
The thing that really made me realize it was time was not being able to
ride my bike anymore. It was the last thing I had left (after being
diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis), and it was a huge part of my mental
wellness, as well as the only physical activity I could do with only a
minimum amount of pain. Things had been going downhill steadily for about
two years, but not being able to ride my dream bike (my Betty Foy) was the
event that made the decision for me.

[RBW] Re: Best rear support rack for med sadlesack?

2015-10-22 Thread dstein
I agree on not using a front rack like Mark's rack for this, I've tried it
and the tombstone definitely gets in the way.

I'd be interested in checking out the Tubus racks mentioned.

The best and worst thing I've found are those Silver Hupes. They are
absolutely perfect for holding a medium saddlesack, even filled to the brim
with overnight camping gear, except, and a very big except at that, they
scratch the crap out of your frame (if anyone has one for sale that has all
the vinyl covering intact let me know, mine is falling off and causing more
scratching).

Like it says. I like the look but it's not functional for day to day use here

I've only used it since spring and the previous owner didn't seem to have put
many miles on it. Figured I would offer it up here first before putting it on

Re: [RBW] Re: Cross/knobby 650B tires

2015-10-22 Thread Hugh Smitham
David,

I think Jeffery nailed it. For my Hilsen the Cazadero's are pretty much it.
I think the R&R's are a mm too large. Waiting on a set of Cazadero's to
mount soon. I wish there were more options but as Jeffery said above the
27+ has taken over, were in a pocket universe for cross type tires in this
width.

Hi Hugn, nope not running the Cazaderos. Nothing against them one bit,
just looking to see how broad the selection is out there, see if I'm
overlooking anything... and if the selection really is only the Caz and the
R&R, well, then, that's wayyy fewer options than I'd hoped. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-22 Thread Toby Whitfield
I use a front porteur type carrier with a big Wald on a high trail bicycle. I
originally got it when I put my daughter in a seat on the rear rack, and
couldn't use my rear rack, or a backpack because it was in her face. I have a
longish bicycle, though not Clem long. It works fine. I have even put
significant weight in it. It takes a while to get used to the steering, and the
steering isn't as quick, but I am fine with it on city streets. It did take me
a while to get used to it, and early on I had some wobbly moments. But, it is
ok now that I have used it for a while. I still don't load it up much if my
daughter is in the back - I want to be able to steer well with her, but with
her lightly loaded daycare bag and my work bag it is fine, and even a little
nice to have some weight up front to balance the load.

[RBW] Re: Cross/knobby 650B tires

2015-10-22 Thread David Banzer
Not sure if it falls under "knobby/cross" but the lowly Panaracer Col de la
Vie does have more of a micro knob tread, not too unlike some of the file
tread tires that have come out. About 35mm actual or slightly wider
depending on rim. I used them when I first did a 650b conversions, did some
long mixed terrain rides on them, and felt they did pretty good on gravel
sections with pressures lowered a bit.

[RBW] Re: Best rear support rack for med sadlesack?

2015-10-22 Thread Ginz
I'm skeptical that the rack in the original post would work, especially
since the fender boss in the hunq's seatstay bridge faces the axle (i.e.,
points downwards).

With a Mark's rack, don't forget that the tombstone might hit your saddle
rails, depending on your frame size and your saddle height.

In my opinion the best choice is a minimal rear rack like a Tubus Fly or
Airy, if it can accommodate your tire size and/or fenders. Another option
is the Nitto R10.

[RBW] Re: Visiting the E. Bay & NM

Thanks for these invitations. However, I had something more relaxed, more
of an opportunity to meet and greet, a relaxed 25 miles. I'd like to add
some personal contact to the electronic friendships. Also a longer ride
across the bay would be harder to organize around family activities.

[RBW] WTT Acorn Handlebar bag for Marks Rack

2015-10-22 Thread Frank Brose
I have two Acorn Handlebar bags one ranger tan and one black (
http://www.acornbags.com/collections/front-bags/products/handlebar-bag)
Both are like new condition. Mounted but only seen the outdoors once or
twice. I'd like to trade one , your choice of color for a Marks Rack for a
winter project. I know it's a long shot but have to at least try. Please
reply off list.
Thanks,
Frank

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-22 Thread Ron Mc
The nice thing about the long wheelbase is it puts the rear rack well away
from your thighs. On my daughter's first full-size bike (China motobecane
from Dallas warehouse), I mounted a Tubus Vega with very long stays

it's rock-solid

I agree with Bill about dealing with Rivendell to work out Clem rack
details - they'll already have all the answers.

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-22 Thread Garth

Wayne, as for the link, I wouldn't count on the photo as being absolute
. As always, a call or email to confirm it is indeed the current model
w/struts is all that is needed. I see other websites of this rack using old
photos as well, btw.

As far as the trail of fork in regards to a front load , it's just not
that simple as the "formula" so to speak you speak of . I used to be a 100
percent back loader , but never really like it , it just seemed kinda "off"
in the sense of the balance of weight is already on the rear wheel so "why
am I adding more" ? When I got a Bombadil and I started using a front rack
it was quickly apparent how much I preferred front loads. Now, my "loads"
are not really heavy at all, but notable enough . The difference is more
like a sensation of "pushing" the front end instead of the sensation like
on a boat with a rear motor where the front end is very light , as what I
had ridden most of my life. It's just a matter of preference really. I
have the Nitto 2-strut front rack on my other bike which is a "traditional"
road-sport type geometry and it too feels better to me with the front rack
. All this leaves me to go for bigger front racks !

I'd forget the generalizations about this bike and this fork is for back
loading and front loading etc. etc. Everyone's sense of balance front-rear
is unique and no matter even the intent of the bike designer , no design is
absolutely or even close to the same for anyone , no matter what anyone
says or agrees to . Go with what you want , from your heart . . . .
forget about your "head" and LIVE !

[RBW] Re: Cross/knobby 650B tires

2015-10-22 Thread jeffrey kane
Search away .. but none you will find. I wish someone would prove me wrong,
though.

For a minute I really thought that would be the next direction in 650b
tires: WTB's, Challenge, etc. .. but it looks like the Plus (+) craze has
shifted the market away. First came the 29's, then 27.5's and even now with
26" offerings -- sometimes specifically matched to new bike models, even.
Not that this is a bad thing or that R n' R's aren't pretty darn good tires
(haven't tried the Cazadero). However, if your frame wants 38's and not
bigger then as far as I can see we're all #$@* out of luck.
