[RBW] Schwalbe Super Motos - True to Size?

2015-12-06 Thread cyclotourist
Wondering if anyone has these, and could confirm actual tire
width/height. Schwalbes tend to state sizes a bit optimistically, and
their actual widths can be off a bit.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Super Motos - True to Size?

2015-12-06 Thread cyclotourist
Thanks, David. I'm looking at a tandem, that can fit 50mm, but not
sure about a full 60mm 26" tire. But if so, the Supes look like the
best tire for me. Not sure, but guessing the rims are relatively
narrow by modern standards. If I can't get the Supes to fit, I can go
w/ 50mm Big Apples as a back up plan.

Thanks again!

Come to think of it, I doubt a home heater would be sufficient to heat

size and preference as to what is "warm" and your electrical wiring ! I'd
look at industrial type heaters. Northern Tool may be good place to look .

[RBW] Riv 12-40 cassette

2015-12-06 Thread Philip Kim
Got it on my Soma San Marcos with the shimano 105 5800 with 38t wolftooth ring.
Rear derailleur is Shimano 5701(gs)

Bought it to do a wide low 1x9 bar end friction set up. I don't like brifters
(just preference nothing against them in particular).

Has the range I need. Shifting was not a problem at all. Found it hard to find
consistent cadence moving through gears. The tooth jumps on the higher gears
are big, found myself shifting up, and found my legs just spinning until the
bike slowed down enough where I was actually pedaling.

This is not a probblem on my San Marcos, which I'm using as an allroad faster
bike with bike bags, but my Cheviot and Camargue are using 2x9 and 3x9
respectively.

Used a "road link" from wolftooth which extends the rear derailleur out to be
able to shift to the 40t, also had to screw in the hi a lot, and screw out the
low so the derailleur would shift correctly. B screw tension adjusted
accordingly.

Its 28 to 34 to 40t on the last three cogs, not too more difficult keep the

Again not a big deal, but it might not be worth spending the $120 for some just

[RBW] Look at my lugs!

2015-12-06 Thread Fullylugged
I was leading our club C group on a chilly WINDY early ride yesterday. Along
the way, we saw another group of racier riders who we did not know stopped at a
corner. I swung over to meet & greet, and one of the riders pedaled on with me
for a mile or so as we continued to chat. Sitting on his SS steel, urban set up
Merkx, he looked over at my Rambouillet and remarked, "I like those lugs! Is
that a custom bike?" I told him that it might as well be one, because it IS
hand made and it DOES fit me like a glove."Love those tires!" (Pasela 1 1/2" -
the largest the bike is designed for). I told him that with skin walls and
fabric beads, they are still light in weight and comfy on the rough stuff. "You
could ride that bike on fire roads!" Well, yes I can, and do. (I get grief
from certain quarters when our routes include even a short stretch of unpaved
travel, but I have broad shoulders :) ). This is not the 1st time someone has
pulled along side and admired this bike. He liked the Hands-On-Wheels made
wheelset too. And then he spun up to ludicrous speed cadence and was gone. Ahh
to be young and fit!

I agree, normally the gaps continue to get larger the farther down the
cassette you go, and this doesn't seem to make any kind of sense other

virtually impossible to over-think gearing.

2015-12-06 Thread dougP
The big box guys are pretty spotty on quality metric fasteners. In my
area, Ace Hardware has an excellent selection in various heads (hex, Allen,
etc.) and stainless. Another possible might be a marine hardware as
stainless is preferred around boats. For rack bolts, use blue Loctite.
Brake mfgs apply it to their bolts at the factory & it survives a few
cycles of install & remove.

[RBW] Re: Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-06 Thread MartyG
Frame is a 55cm C-T. Tubing is Reynolds 531 throughout. Seatpost is a
RockShox suspension-type. My wife uses something similar now. Interesting
find when I tore it down for a closer look: bottom bracket is a Campagnolo.
Crankarms are TA, and I've heard they changed the taper on the early
Zephyrs. Cranks are not marked with the Zephyr name as later ones were.
Chainrings are Ritchey. Seems to fit up well, so I plan to leave well
enough alone. Might check with Riv to see if anyone (well, Grant I suppose)
recalls spec'ing that combo back in the day. An article I came across talks
about the early Herons using Ritchey Logic's until the Zephyr's appeared.
Most of the other specs in this article match up pretty close, although the
rims are Sun CR18.

http://www.adventurecycling.org/default/assets/resources/rivendell.pdf

Came with the nice Rhode Gear mirror that are something of a cult item
these days. Nitto big rack out back. I learned the original owner was an
engineer and did a number of international tours. Given the component mix
and attention to detail, him being an engineer made perfect sense.

2015-12-06 Thread islaysteve
Jason, I can't help with the sizing, but I can say that you may not find what
you're looking for at the local hw store. Try bicycle bolts.com. You can get
them in regular hex heads or security heads, the site will explain what those
are. He's in SF. I didn't end up ordering as I needed a size he does show, I
ordered from River City Supply through eBay. Have not gotten the order yet.
You may find metic bolts locally, but if they are the black ones, they aren't
stainless steel and they will rust. Or you may find SS, but in Phillips head,
not optimal. Good luck,
Steve

That bike IS a great find. I'm sure she'll be tickled with it. Just out
of curiosity, is that seat post one of those shock-absorber types? Kinda
looks that way in the photo because of its small diameter and unusual
fitting around the clamp. Kinda reminds me of the tandem I saw out on the
trail a couple of weeks ago. They were going at a hell-bent-for-election
speed and the stoker was standing up almost all the time. And the saddle
was one of those wide, wide, heavily padded jobs like you see on those
trikes oldsters ride in Florida. Clearly, she must be having saddle
comfort problems and probably hasn't been getting the right advice about
how to best take care of them.

Interesting, Thanks for posting! Despite it being an exciting bike, I don't like descriptions for bikes over $2000 that lack the following specificity in their descriptions:-photo of the drive side-info on chainring sizes-info on numbers of teeth in the 9-speed cassette-frame sizeToo bad it doesn't have cantis. If super-long is a good thing (I still haven't tried it), I'm guessing the new Joe Appaloosa will surpass the proto-Appaloosas due to the fatter tires they'll allow. In my opinion, they'll look better too with no rear tentacles and parallel-2T instead of diagonal. Still, I'll bet that proto is an amazing bike. Although, the uprightness might not be optimized with the Cambium saddle.-James (no connection to seller)-Original Message-

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem for my husband

2015-12-06 Thread LeahFoy
Deacon, I have been waiting to see your fleet of new bikes. I do so hope you'll
get the racks affixed soon and grace us with photos of the lineup. Didn't you
order 5? I'd love to see how you made each one individual for each lass.

Jon, who knows what we'll get into? We almost have to load the bikes and take
them to ride elsewhere as we are waaa out in suburbia and on top of a
mountain. Trips to parks, some out-of-town stuff, to church, that kind of
thing. We've never bike-camped; could this be the year?!

[RBW] Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-06 Thread Chad
I'm not sure if I have a odd duck here or not, but tire clearance on my early
double top tube 650b Bombadil is really tight. With a 650b x 2.0 Quasi-Moto
(actual width Is about 53mm on a Velocity Synergy rim), there is maybe 3-4mm
clearance at the seat stay bridge. Enough for the tire to roll through but not
much room for mud or rocks. I was thinking the Bombadil was designed to fit
the quasi-Motos as there are pictures of early prototypes running around with
this tire. I've also run the Schwalbe HS 315 "Fatties" (true width 47mm) and
Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads (44mm), but it would be nice to fit at least a modern
27.5 x 2.1 MTB tire in there. Just wondering if anyone else here has
experienced this challenge?
