RE: [RBW] Re: Copenhagen!

2016-01-20 Thread olofstroh
Nice to see your pictures!

Though having visited Copenhagen now and then since 1957 and even ridden
drop-bar bicycles there (and even bought two bikes there, with drop bars)I can
assure that they do exist. Pedersens ARE nice to ride – I have done so – though
taking another road to design. Sögreni on the other hand are in my view not
Rivendellian, traditional frame design but more catering to his own minimalist
design than practicality and comfort. His bars are murder!

[RBW] Front Rack Advice

2016-01-20 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm a little surprised to hear the Mark's Rack is unstable. It seems to me you
could join that with a Mark's Hub Area Rack and spread the load between
panniers and basket so you're not overloading the top rack. And it would look
awesome!

[RBW] Re: Front Rack Advice

2016-01-20 Thread dougP
Michael:

I haven't used the Nitto Big Front Rack but it looks like the low rider
rail should give clearance. Maybe look into other panniers? Doesn't the
Nitto have a couple of mounting rails for panniers? There've been a few
versions of that rack.

FWIW, on my Atlantis I have a Tubus Duo sharing the eyelets just below the
canti studs with a small Nitto front rack that supports an Acorn Boxy Rando
bag. I get Ortleib Back Rollers (the big honkin' 20 liter ea jobs) onto
that set up. BUT I have V-brakes which are pretty out of the way of
everything. That's all a lot different than your set-up, but food for
thought.

What swift panniers? I have the same big front-wald basket set up. Swift mini
short stacks work fine for me on the lower rail when slid into the forward

Alternate option would be the campee rack with the removable pannier rail
things which are lower than on the big front

[RBW] Front Rack Advice

2016-01-20 Thread Michael Ullmer
I'm looking for the group's advice on the best front rack set-up for my Sam
Hillborne. What I currently have is the Nitto Big Front Rack with a medium
Wald Basket on top. I really like this general set-up, the front basket
gets daily use. I want to be able to mount front panniers occasionally, but
am finding that the Swift Panniers that I have aren't able to mount low
enough to clear the bottom of the basket. The wide-profile cantilevers that
I have are interfering with the panniers as well.

I'm wondering what other people have used for front racks on their bikes to
accommodate a front basket on top and front panniers. I was thinking a
Marks's Rack and a separate tubus front rack, but was finding that the
Marks rack wasn't stable enough. Also, it seems to me like the eyelets on
the front fork of the Hillborne are a little higher on the fork than
standard mid-fork eyelets and this may interfere with the mounting of
low-rider front racks, I could be wrong though.

Thanks for any thoughts you have!

Yes we really get the 'happy medium' of weather... I suppose.

Those are 650Bx38 Parimoto's which measure closer to 40 on A23 rim's for
me. No problems with traction, I was on the road closer to the start of
the snow though and didn't encounter much ice. I imagine tomorrow's
commute (for bikes and cars alike) will be more challenging. Unfortunately
I'm compelled to drive tomorrow due to some after work errands. If I spend
some time in the garage tomorrow night I'll get the XO-3 with studded 26"x
1.9 tires running for Friday's commute though. :)

I figured it would be fun to start a thread for those of us in the
Mid-Atlantic area as we get to see whether or not this big blizzard
actually show's up on Friday or not... and it'll be amusing for list
members in area's of the country that get REAL snow all the time to hear
about how we deal with it. :) If we actually end up with the 10-30"
currently forecast for DC it'll make for some memorable pictures to share!

Today's commute home got a surprise flurry which snarled up traffic across
the region. Needless to say I was VERY happy I rode in today.

[RBW] Re: OT Bike tagging and/or stolen bike registry?

2016-01-20 Thread Peter Adler
This thread made me log into my Bike Index account, to see what I had
listed. They now include an option to enter lock information, restricted to
each user, so you can store a lock combination or a key's serial number
(Kryptonite uses serial numbers, as do the various locking skewer
companies).

Velospace also includes a hidden section in their
listing pages for bike serial numbers; it's visible only to the user who
posts the listing. That will help with a police ID: You can log into the
owner's listing, see the photos and a breakdown of the components, and see
the serial number.

A profile picture of the bike in its most recent configuration (I'm a serial

Re: [RBW] Re: Segwaying from Garbage Pail Bike thread: pros and cons of CF and Steel?

2016-01-20 Thread Patrick Moore
It's not a problem at all! If I had $5,300 to put on a frame, I'd seriously
research the pros and cons of carbon fiber. I am not convinced that CF is
better than steel for bike frames, but I am starting to believe that, at
its best, it may well be so. That's why I'd like to see a rigorous,
dispassionate comparison.

But for my own purposes and budget, even if CF should be better than steel
when optimally used, it wouldn't be worth the premium at current custom CF
prices. (Once again, I have little interest in current mass market CF
offerings.)

Now if someone started making a $3K custom frameset in CF that rode and
lasted like a Rivendell, I'd seriously consider it. Seriously! I need one
with 120 OL rear spacing for my new AM hub.

I think the problem is you're not comparing apples to apples.
Yes, a Crumpton will cost $5300 for a frame. But he is considered one of
the top carbon frame builders in the US and maybe the world. Yes, you can
get a "premium" steel frame for less, maybe even 52% less. But, if you
really want to compare a Crumpton, then you should compare it to what the
top steel frame builders charge.

Since there are 100s of steel frame builders in the US, one way to compare
is to look at wait list. Richard Sachs and Sasha White/Vanilla have
arguably the longest wait list for steel builders that has people waiting 5
to 6 YEARS?! If that makes them the "top" steel frame builders, then the
price of a custom Sachs or Vanilla is around $5000 or about the same as a
Crumpton.

Further, Brent Steelman is asking $4850 for a custom lug frame and others
like Bruce Gordon and Mark DiNucci are in the $4000+ range. In contrast, a
custom Riv is "only" $3500 and I last I heard, their wait list is about two
years?!

Of course, you can find quality steel builders for less, i.e., Della Santa
or Paul Sadoff/Rock Lobster, but if you want to compare apples to apples,
you look at the builders with the longest wait list first. Or at least,
that is one criteria.

Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Segwaying from Garbage Pail Bike thread: pros and cons of CF and Steel?

2016-01-20 Thread Bill M.
You've gotta work within the limits of the material. My Calfee does have a
carbon post (Easton) that came with the frame, but I would never consider a
carbon bar or stem and it does not carry a saddle bag.

After many cycle tours, I have come to prefer using a single large bag up
front on a porteur style rack and if the need is there a saddle bag.

Despite reading many claims that CF is as good or better than steel so far
not aware of any CF fork or seat post recommended for this sort of set up.

And yes, I have asked custom builders who recommended I instead go with a
steel fork. Certainly not claiming it cannot be done. But interesting no
one wants to do it.

[RBW] Re: Copenhagen!

2016-01-20 Thread Surlyprof
My suggestion is to go sometime other than the dead of winter. Bike
rentals are plentiful but my wife was not game for riding on slush, snow
and ice this trip. We hope to go back at a warmer time and rent bikes the
whole time (many hotels have bike rentals or a shop very close where you
can rent). The one thing you can't rent were the Pedersens they sell at
Christiania Cycles (http://www.pedersen-bike.dk/). Funky place in a very
funky part of town.

As for the gears under those handlebars, I'm not totally sure but I believe
one operated the rear derailleur and the other the brakes. One part of the
lever was for upshifting and the other for downshifting with your thumb
(kind of like brifters). I think it was a 1x5 set up. The components were
older Campy that had been polished out to a mirror shine. Can't recall for
sure but I believe the brakes were operated with the right hand levers.
