They both look 55ish to me, although Mark's original does seem to have a

PS. I love the influence of the young folks showing through on the BLUG. Grant

Re: [RBW] New tire

2016-03-02 Thread Patrick Moore
So, rather different than the 23 mm Pro Race *Service Course.* I would be
interested in trying them, if they were made in 559 X 28+. To save ~$500 on
my next 6 pairs of tires ...

Aside: I briefly tried Schwalbe's 559 X ~33 mm Kojak *tubeless* on my EQ 21
rims. They ride much differently sans tube than with even a light sub 90
gram 650C X 23 mm tube. Alas, while they maintained a seal while under
sufficient pressure, when they deflated, the seal released, and I could not
get it back with a hand pump -- which made the arrangement useless for my
purposes -- I don't want to be left 20 miles from home, on some isolated
dirt road, with no option but to install a tube in the messy tire -- and
risk further flats with no further recourse.

It's too bad, because the ~32-33 mm softness of the un-be-tubed Kojak was
almost as good in feel as, and better in sand/dirt/gravel traction than,
the tubed Elk Pass. Compass does not make the EP in tubeless form.

 the Compass ~28 mm.

The Michelins weigh just under 200 grams, the EPs average (weighed 3)
 175 grams.

The gear on the Michelins (46X15 fixed) is 75", that on the EPs is 76:
 24.5" and 24.75" diameter respectively.

*The Elk Passes are smoother, feel faster, and seem to allow me to
pedal a very slightly higher gear with less effort,* measuring the

5'10" in flat feet on a polished cement floor, 170 lb buck nekkid (and

Re: [RBW] New tire

2016-03-02 Thread Patrick Moore
This may or may not be relevant, but in case it is: I swapped the 650C X 23
mm Pro Race 4s on my Riv custom gofast with 559 X 32 mm Compass Elk Pass
ELs. The Michelins measured ~22 mm on my 19 outside to outside rims, the
Compass ~28 mm.

The Michelins weigh just under 200 grams, the EPs average (weighed 3) 175
grams.

The gear on the Michelins (46X15 fixed) is 75", that on the EPs is 76:
24.5" and 24.75" diameter respectively.

*The Elk Passes are smoother, feel faster, and seem to allow me to pedal a
very slightly higher gear with less effort,* measuring the last with
cadence compared to effort in well known conditions.

5'10" in flat feet on a polished cement floor, 170 lb buck nekkid (and
ain't *that* a horrible image).

Me, I've spent close to $1K on 12 pr of Elk Passes, to stock up, and if Jan
ever says that they are going to stop production, I'll buy another $1K's
worth.

[RBW] Re: Compass Promenade vs. Bosco bars

2016-03-02 Thread David Banzer
Main difference is tubing size: 23.8 (road bar standard) for the Promenade,
and 22.2 (upright/mtb standard) diameter, meaning the Promenade would need
to take bar end brake levers or find 23.8mm brake levers that would work.
I've tried a similar Nitto Promenade (though wider at 48cm) which has
22.2mm and it appears to be similar in grip area as the Promenade, which is
to say, there's not a lot of room to have shifters in a typical position.
The Boscos are much roomier in grip area in overall width.
If you're looking for something narrower than Bosco, I'd look into the
Nitto Promenade offerings (B602, B603, & B617), the GB Champs Elysees, or
the VO upright offerings (Porteur, Belleville, Left Bank, Montmartre) in
addition the Grand Bois Promenade, which is a very nice looking handlebar.

[RBW] New tire

2016-03-02 Thread Don Compton
I had worn out my Grand Bois 28c rear tire and was ready to buy a new one(
$70 shipped). So I decided to check out some prices. Western Bikeworks had
a super sale on Michelen Pro4 tires and I bought a pair of Pro4 Endurance

And the good news the two tires cost less than one Grand Bois.

I should add that I do have experience putting a 114 mm OL AW into a 126 mm

My question comes down to: would the 3 mm less on each side avoid the
violence otherwise required?

I certainly didn't pay or, when I sold it, get $2K for my blue Ram, though
I am also certainly happy with what I got and with what I paid.

FWIW, I should think that the later Rams, with clearance for nominal 35s

[RBW] FS: Clem Smith Jr Size 52 Grey

2016-03-02 Thread RDS

I have for sale a size 52 Clem Smith Jr Grey frame or semi-complete bike
*(minus
the handlebars; replaced the stock tires)*. I have already sold the stock
handlebars that come with the complete bike, so no handlebars are
included. I have replaced the stock tires with Schwalbe Big Ben Raceguard
Performance line 48mm wide tires ($45 each at Riv). Bike has been ridden
less than 15 all pavement miles. So, I will consider any offers from the
frame only (frame/fork/headset/BB) to the whole bike (minus the handlebars
with the new replacement tires).

*NOTE: When I received the bike from Riv, the top tube had a dent (see
pics) that was created during the shipping process. The top tube has a
dent from the handlebars from the shipping process and Riv said that there
are not any structural issues to worry about. I decided the keep the bike
at that time after speaking with Riv about the dent. Pics of
dent: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6Wb8pkSIAX6cUlmM2hDaWxxb00
*

I will take $650 for the frame/fork/BB/headset. The bike will ship from
Georgia and I will split the shipping cost with the buyer.
I will take $1,200 for the full bike *(handlebars/stem not included)* and I
will pay the shipping cost.
I will ship to the Continental USA only. Bike is located in Georgia.

* Again, the handlebars (the original bars had the built in stem) are
not included and the original tires were replaced with Schwalbe Big Ben,
RaceGuard Performance line, wire - 650B x 48 (50-584, 27.5x2) which cost
$45 at Riv.*

[RBW] AW 114 mm OL hub on QB or SO?

Has anyone done this? Any problems?

Note: the older SA hubs, at least, were not 120 OL but 114. My AM is 114,

I think it's the AM -- medium ratio 3 speed, not the 4 speed.

A bike with AM would be nice! Say, 51-60-71 gi.

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
Size rarity and condition are big factors in determining where in the range
this will fall. Presuming that's a current photo and it is as pristine as
it looks here (used but in very good condition), I'd start closer to 2k
than 800. Being simpler, the QB usually goes for less, but component
upgrades, rare size, and condition meant I spent more that the usual
$1,200, and was (still am!) happy to do so.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-02 Thread Michael Hechmer
A lot depends on the condition of the bike and quality of the components.
The age is almost irrelevant on a steel frame. That is a very pretty
crank by the way. If someone is looking for a beautiful, comfortable joy
ride, they should jump at it. I hesitate to put down a number but can tell
you that I happily paid $1800 for an early model Saluki in good condition,
with good components, metal fenders and front & rear VO racks. I have a
blue Ram in good Condition, with top shelf (9 speed friction) components
that's worth every bit as much as the Saluki. In fact, today I told my
insurance agent that its new replacement value was more than $3,000.

[RBW] Re: New Riv custom mixte - what I'm thinking for colour and build

2016-03-02 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Pictures of the color from Mitch's Flickr page below. I love it. I think it's
called Black Currant Pearl. I'll put a link for the PPG paint tool also. It's
really neat. It's based on auto colors, so if you knew the make and year of a
car color you like you can pull it right out.

I have a 52/42/30 triple on the Hilsen and here in Louisville (flat, flat,
flat!) I use my 42 ring most of the time with my 12/28 cassette. It really
makes Bill's suggestion of a 1x9 intriguing. I opted for a 48/32 compact Rene
Herse on the new bike, and I'll use a 12/32 cassette. I don't think your
gearing is wimpy at all. I probably could have easily gone with a 46/30 or
44/28, but I'm taking baby steps because I always thought I was a big, strong
masher. I no longer mash, especially with fake knees. No matter what you
choose, isn't it a blast picking it all out and worrying over the details?

Re: [RBW] Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-02 Thread iamkeith
That's in beautiful condition! This is total "gut feeling," so take it for
what it's worth. Based on what other upper end, well-spec'd Rivendells in
good condition typically sell for, I'd think it much closer to the $2,000
range of that Legolas than the $800 range of that Romulus. I might be
biased, though. With snow starting to melt, I was just today looking
expectantly at mine, and admiring how nicely made it was made. I know it
was originally intended as Riv's first "attainable" model, designed to cost
less than the semi-custom models of the day, but it has some really nice
touches that a lot of the newer models just don't (can't) have. Graceful,
double-tapered seat stays, extra windows painted in, nicely thinned lug
edges. And that multi-step, labor-intensive orange is one of the most
beautiful Riv colors ever. You kind of have to see it in person to
appreciate all this, though. To me, the only things not perfect about the
Ram are the limited tire clearance and the lack of rack brazeons on the
front fork - but for someone in the market for a go-fast, those probably
aren't important. Sorry you have to let it go.

Re: [RBW] Compass Promenade vs. Bosco bars

2016-03-02 Thread René Sterental
I've used both. The Promenade are much smaller and narrower, so it's either
a rider and bike size issue. Or a personal preference. I'm big 5'11" and
had them for a while on my 58 Betty and loved them. I didn't enjoy the
Boscos on the Betty as much, but had all versions on the Hunqapillar for a
while.

Right now, I prefer the Ahearne long MAP on the Betty. No Boscos for me at
this time.

[RBW] Compass Promenade vs. Bosco bars

2016-03-02 Thread Lungimsam
Anyone used both the Promenade and the Bosco aluminum (not the bullmoose)?

What's your experience with them?

The Promenade looks like a mini version of the Bosco, because the width and
all is much smaller, but the design looks similar.

Was wondering how the two compare.

The small sized rider would like to go fast while holding onto the bar ends
and sitting upright.

Re: [RBW] Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-02 Thread Tim Gavin
Ebay "sold" listings is a good start.

$1350 Bleriot

<$2k Betty Foy (best offer accepted)

$800 Romulus

$1200 Quickbeam

$2000 Legolas

$1390 Sam

You could also search this forum for FS listings from the past.

Since the Rambouillet was the "fancy" brother of the Romulus, a price of
more than $800 would be fair, up to whatever you think is reasonable.

Orange is a very popular color for Rivendells.

I recommend that you keep the nice accessories (especially the B17 Ti); you
won't get their value in a complete bike sale.
Many bikes are sold without any accessories, pedals, or seat, since new
owners like to customize those things for themselves.

As for me, my Rivs are 59 cm and I'm short on funds after my Roadeo
purchase.

Best of luck,

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-02 Thread Mark Williams

We are downsizing to a much smaller home so I'm having to let go of some
treasures, among them is my 54 cm Rambouillet, but I don't have a clue
about its value. I ordered one from Rivendell but the rear brake bridge
was too high and I didn't want to file anything down to make it fit, so
Grant sent me another frame with the correct dimensions which is this one.
It is all 8 speed Ultegra (except for the front derailleur which is Sora
because it shifts better), DT rims Continental tires, Brooks B17 titanium
with a pretty seatpost (but I don't remember the brand), Nitto stem,
mustache bars and a Nitto seat bag rack.
I would appreciate any advice on pricing as I can't find a current similar
bike for sale anywhere!

Re: [RBW] Re: Reverse brake levers - pros, cons?

2016-03-02 Thread René Sterental
Interesting!

Personally, I'm very happy with my downtube shifters, but it's good to see
that there are some worthwhile choices for those who still want barend
shifters.

@ Clyde: Yes, the reverse brake work "backwards", but the lever is still
pulling the cable against the housing.

[RBW] Re: RBW Listers Take Over The West Point Inn, June 24 & 25 - Join us there!!!

2016-03-02 Thread Hugh Smitham
Well you know I'm in.

When the Entmoot/ Riv twentieth happened I'll never forget that high. Folks
from near and far converging on China Camp (Grant, Will & Jenny handing out
raffle prizes) was an event like the one's you have as a youth that become
a personal high water mark. I recall lister Jim Warren mentioning to me
that we should have a Rivendell celebration the following year at the West
Point Inn (which obviously didn't happen) at the time, I was sure Jim. But
in reality I really didn't know what that would be like and what kind of
effort it would require...fast forward to this past December and helping
Jacquie celebrate her birthday at the the Inn was/is down right amazing!
There you are on top of Tamalpais with "Billion" dollar views (Inflation
don't you know) of the East Bay and the City and dirt fire road heaven at
the threshold of the Inn. Inside the Inn we all converge with like minded
bicycle obsessed folk imbibing the history along with spirits and food,
it's like being a drug addict chasing a high but this is a high I'll gladly
chase any day. Let's make some memories.

June ain't coming fast enough! See you freaks on top of Tam and bring yer
knobbies.

I wouldn't ride a Alba or similar bar without them ! You can mount
Paul thumbies next to the lever if you wish.
http://www.biketinker.com/2013/projects/reverso-levers-and-bar-end-shifters/

I prefer thumbies around the inside top inside myself as my hands are most
often in the middle on up, almost never all the way back. I usually brake
with just 2 or 3 fingers, the smallest ones .

Alternatively, Jtek makes some levers that mount into Shimano bar end
shifters, and reverse brake levers that clamp on(22.2) that you can mount
just after the bar end shifter.

[RBW] Re: New Riv custom mixte - what I'm thinking for colour and build

2016-03-02 Thread Ryan Fleming
Tim...I'd love to see the colour you are talking about , if you have a
photo; that sounds really close to what I want. Anyhow, the Riv site
directed me to the Joe Bell Imron PDF...but from what you're saying , that
exact colour might not be available...but I expect JB will come up with a
pretty close equivalent...oh and one other thing...going for old-school ,
not Viking style Riv decals. Also , Grant told me that I can have slightly
less rococo lugs than , say , the Glorius , so I went with that.

About the gearing...I like 36-38 for the inner chain ring...My PX-10 SS has
a 36 X 20 , which with a tailwind or on a downhill grade , I'm spun
out...OTOH into a wind or grade, I'm good. I know it sounds like a bit of a
wimpy gear , but there it is. It may be that this bike morphs into a 1 X 9
; that's not a bad alternative either. Believe it or not, with my
multi-geared bikes , I shift when I have to, but I really don't shift a
lot.

So, I'm actually very interested in y'all's feedback regarding gearing so
thanks for all comments!

Hands behind steering axis:

With Albatross bars and 8(?) cm stem at max height on my Sam the steering felt
just as good as with drops with 8 cm stem. Smooth and stable.
Standing climbing holding the bar ends on the grips was same. Excellent control
and leverage.
Never used a longer stem though. Some people use those really long stems.
Theyll jave to chime in.

[RBW] Re: Need advice on a potential Quickbeam Modification

2016-03-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
What's to gain?
No oil and 4 years between changes of belt vs 1 year per chain. Is that
really enough to justify the known and possible costs:

What's to lose?
Cash for conversion. Your Quickbeam. Or the feel of your Quickbeam.

"a carbon belt seems to make a lot of sense over a chain"
Then buy a bike specifically designed for a carbon belt. In my experience
things trying to be what they aren't rarely goes well. Let the QB be the
QB, and the belt bike be the belt bike.

In the two years I've owned my Quickbeam I've become a much stronger rider
because of the QB's "limits." Spring is long country road time for me
(single track is still melting till June), and my engine got a lot stronger
on the QB, doing rides of 90+ miles. I'm curious to see if my engine has
upgraded this year. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: derailleur hanger

2016-03-02 Thread jeffrey kane
Yep, everyone is right about just trying it, either yourself or at a shop
... but aren't you in Bklyn? If so, give Johnny Coast a call. He can bend
it or replace it for you and he does make some awfully nice bikes right
here in the big apple.

[RBW] Re: derailleur hanger

2016-03-02 Thread ascpgh
Done with the right tool, the rear wheel mounted, a steel frame derailleur
hanger can usually take the adjustment. Yours seems to be on the low end of
the bent scale. Knackered ones are bent so much as to violate the integrity
of the threaded hole or show the surface fractures of having bent too far.

The tool, threaded into the derailleur mounting hole, protects its
integrity and the mounted rear wheel stabilizes the dropouts' spacing,
prevents twisting of the drive side dropout's opening while the rim
provides a comparative indexing surface at points around the projected
radius of the derailleur hanger mount.

I scan the various sources for those tools often, I've used them in the
shop and have a growing want for one myself now that shops are more
interested in selling a new hanger tab as the only fix since most of their
bikes are aluminum or CF with aluminum fixtures.
