[RBW] Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-27 Thread Surlyprof
My wife calls my Hillborne the "Barbie Bike" due to my olive sackville
accesorizing. The crate is interesting although I'd want the coffee holder on
the outside to maximize interior space. Embrace the fact that he's so into the
Clem that he wants to personalize it. Even if the crate ends up with an "fs"
on the list, at least he's making his Riv his own.

[RBW] Re: Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
I went and cluttered up my "With Abandon" bike adventure site with more
posts, so here are the specific posts with the hats, proving that indeed
the hat makes the ride.

Blue Bonnet (sort of a newsboy equivalent)
https://thegrid.ai/with-abandon/spring-splash-grocery-run/

Tiley (sort of a Panama equivalent)
https://thegrid.ai/with-abandon/rampart-reservoir-run/

Islay Steve, Happy Easter to you as well! When we toured Scotland, my wife,
my 75 year-old cousin, and I hired bikes on Islay and toured each of those
wondrous distilleries (they are only a mile a part, as you no doubt know).
Fortunately, all the whisky sampling (always ask to sample the more
exclusive runs so you a) get more and b) know where to spend your money on
whisky that can't be got in the US) we did straightened out the previously
winding coastal road, so our trip back to the B and B was easier. Grin. Pro
tip: when hiring a bike, check that the handlebars are tight in the stem,
or at least have the proper (and if necessary, ancient) tools required to
properly tighten it. Barring either of those, bashing your bike handlebars
onto the asphalt road to lodge them more securely in the stem is preferable
to a "dri-stane" wall, which will topple and free the sheep. Whisky, of
course, helps the entire situation.

Re: [RBW] Re: Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-27 Thread cyclotourist
That basket/box is pretty cool. I like bamboo products, and they are
generally Riv-approved as well!
It should adapt fine to the bike. It looks like his Clem has 20mm of spacers
, so the
box _should_ fit on there okay. The 650B tires should be large enough that
the radius will be around 10mm of the 700C bike the box was designed
around. Might have to tilt it fore/aft to adjust it level. Stays look
rather slim for carrying much weight, so don't go crazy at Costco.

I have a Pendleton newsboy
 that I love. Great
hat!
A little hot in summer, I wear a cowboy hat then.

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-27 Thread dougP
If the average snowfall is 60", 100% means getting to that 60" amount.
Similarly, 120% of average would be 72". It's also usually expressed in
relation to time, as in "100% of average for March 27".

Previous posts have mentioned less than average snowfall last year. So
that may mean 75% of average, i.e., only getting 3/4 of the expected snow.
So people who did this route last year may have encountered less snow than
would be expected this year at the same time.

[RBW] Re: Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-27 Thread dougP
To Leah's "zany husband" (her description, not mine): GO FOR IT!

Leah:

Just on the basis of him wanting to pick his own stuff, regardless of
pedigree, this guy has "got it". He was perfectly happy with his old bike,
but, oh no, you had to go get a Betty & introduce him to the world of cool
bikes. You can't put the toothpaste back in that tube now.

So he's on the loose with a credit card, an internet connection and some
ideas about what he wants. There really is no "correct" way to set up a
Rivendell. I have an old Atlantis catalogue that shows 8 different
variations for what is meant to be a dedicated touring bike. Grant one
time said words to the effect that a frame is just a place to connect
together the parts you like.

As to your question "has anyone done this?", my guess is "probably".
Peruse the staff bikes page at Rivendell and cyclofiend's various photo
pages. Besides, it is a cool looking crate, so on the off chance it's not
been done, it's about time.

While we love being consulted in these matters, the downside is we could
talk spend weeks debating whether the hardware should be silver or black.
In the meantime, he'll just buy the crate, install it & be haulin' stuff
before we run out of steam. But we have fun.

Leah, you must heed the Deacon's words, for while the rest of us were perhaps
lost in a pleasant Sunday afternoon slumber, he had given a rather definitive
response to your query. Yes, your man may have to (or may have to seek help
with) modifying the stays and mounting bracket, but a creative solution is
surely possible. I say go for it!

And Deacon, darn but but you have some fine taste in whiskey: all of my

[RBW] Re: Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bamboo basket with a Starbucks cup holder may be an original and fabulous
idea. It is, however, at best a subset of a hundred plus years of using
beefy wood crates for hauling. Which is neither here nor there. The basket
should mount fine, though the stem attachment may need adjustment to work
with a threaded stem (I've no idea) -- but the good elves at your bike
shop, who doubtless occasionally have ideas all their own without
consulting here (gasp!) will surely serve you well there. Perhaps others
can help with the technical aspects more than me.

Of greatest interest and the really important thing here is the hat. Either
a Panama or newsboy are brilliant. The Panama for relaxed outings and the
newsboy for rakish speed. A retention strap would help the Panama stay on
in a wee zephyr, and that's before he adds breeze of his own with relaxed
speed. An aero tuck with a backwards newsboy is just the thing for a steep
run down the local hill at devil-may-care speed, and not dissimilar to my
blue bonnet. To complete the roguish experience, it is critical to replace
the steaming Starbucks with a bottle of whisky (Ardbeg, Laughroaig,
Lagavulin being the three options meeting the meaning of the word and
living up to the demands of a newsboy.).

Sounds like he's on a brilliant tack and he really can't go wrong here.
Enjoy!

Patrick

Hi Joe,

I was curious to know, are you using a 10-speed drivetrain on your Jones
Plus? If so, are you also using a clutch derailleur? I'm wondering if some
of the problems I've had are a result of stubbornly hanging onto a 9-speed
drivetrain, as I know the Surly OD chainrings are designed for 10-speed but
will work with 9-speed. I'm still determined to switch to 1X, but it would
be interesting to know if chain width could be a factor in the issues I've
had.

Best,

I saw some nice looking functional Scwinns and Huffys at a college recently.
I think I saw this huffy there, too. Of course, I dont know how well they
perform or last. But they looked nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis in the new Levi's commercial

2016-03-27 Thread Lungimsam
Apparantly there can be all kinda reasons why a prop gets into the picture in
show biz. Sometimes arbitrary, sometimes not.

Back in the late '60's there was a group called the Peppermint Rainbow. One of
the singers told me that they were on a CBS TV show doing their song "Will You
be Staying After Sunday?".

They were using all Fender instruments even though in real life some of them
played other instruments. But since CBS was the TV network, and CBS also owned
Fender instruments at the time, CBS told them they had to use Fender stuff.
