[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-14 Thread Bob B
Bob E - Great resources! It's great to know about these. I'll definitely be
exploring this area in the future and will report back!

Bill - Thanks for sharing your routes and photos. I particularly like the
Bosco'ed Trek. Beautiful path it's on, too! I've done a similar thing with
with my old T700. See pic below.

Brad - I had seen Mohonk on the map before, but never looked into it before
you mentioned it. That area looks beautiful! Thanks.

Looks like I've got a ton of riding to do this summer!

Re: [RBW] Re: Wiring a Spanninga dyno tail light question...

2016-05-14 Thread Peter White
Sure. The hole or holes for wiring are at the inside edge of the fender,
where the metal is curved over to eliminate the exposed sharp edge. For
mounting the taillight, you need two holes, 5mm diameter, one above the
other. One hole is for the fixing bolt, the other for the pin that keeps
the light from rotating around the mounting bolt.

And, be careful to position the taillight such that the brightest part of
its beam is projected horizontally. Turn it on and look at it before
reaching for the drill. I see far too many taillights aimed up at the moon.
That may assist Marvin the Martian in aiming his PU36 Explosive Space
Modulator, but it won't help any terrestrial automobile drivers to notice
you.

[RBW] Re: How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?

2016-05-14 Thread Lungimsam
UPDATE:

I slapped on the spacer and cassette. Wobble in the cassette. Spacer must
be filed out to clear cassette rivets, or rivets must be removed so spacer
will sit flush to freehub and cassette.

So I hand filed the 4.5mm spacer in three areas with a round file,
making three little dome cutouts in the spacer, to make space to clear the
rivet heads on the back of the cassette so the spacer will sit flush
against the freehub and cassette.

I didn't remove the rivets as RBW didn't recommend doing that.

I put it and the HG50 13-30 7-speed cassette on and have been riding with
it for many months now. Maybe 9. No cracks in the spacer from my filing (I
purposely did the dome cutouts thinking that would help avoid stress riser
corners if I had cut out square shapes).

Friction shifting is now much better than 10, 9, or 8 was. Autoshifts
rarely happen at all now.

[RBW] Save them from the trash bin. Free tubular tires and some clincher road tires too.

2016-05-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
In the inexorable pendular swing between collect and purge, my garage is
going through a purge. One of the items on the chopping block is a small
pile of tubular tires.

Three basic Vittoria road tubulars.

Two cyclocross knobby tubulars.

Free to whomever wants them. Reimbursement for shipping appreciated but
not required. I believe all hold air, but one of the knobbies I seem to
recollect needed a patch.

Also for free I have a pair of Michelin Axial Pro 700x23 road clinchers.
Far too skinny and nowhere near supple enough for today. These came on a
high end complete bike I bought in the early 00s. I swapped them out and
have kept them in my tire box ever since. "Aged" I guess you'd call them

I disagree that the big push for discs is because they work better. Discs
are being pushed simply because manufacturers need something new and
different to sell in this stagnate market. You, I and most people on this
Google group aren't the majority of the customers for the bicycle industry.
Make no mistake – we are the tiny minority of cycling nuts (I wear that
badge with pride). The majority of cycling industry customers aren't
pushing their bicycles to the limit. In fact, I suspect the majority of
cycling industry customers won't be riding in the rain, and they won't be
touring with stuffed panniers. They are the fair weather cyclists whose
bikes probably won't even need a brake pad change while in their possession.

These customers buy stuff because it's novel and cool, but not necessarily
because it works better. A lot of them probably buy by bullet points – Disc
brakes? Check. Minimum dual 5" suspension? Check. 27.5" wheels? Check.
Wheels that can save 5 seconds off a 40-km time trial? Check. Now, there's
nothing wrong with that, but let's not fool ourselves by claiming that disc
brakes are pushed because they work better. Indeed, manufacturers won't be
bothered with disc brakes, if the target market only consists of people who
can functionally benefit from them. And yes, I'm an all-weather commuter
(albeit in Northern CA) who has two disc-equipped bikes, so I'm
demonstrably not anti-disc.

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-14 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
It's straightforward physics. When the lever arm is shorter, more force is
needed for the same torque (stopping force). Thus, more force is being
applied by the disc brake and countered by the fork blade for the same
deceleration, compared to a rim brake setup.

Let's do some estimating for a front setup: "Big" discs have about a 10 cm
radius, while rim brake tracks are about 30 cm from the hub. So the fork
blade will experience 3 times the force of what the fork crown experiences,
given the same deceleration of the bike. That means one will likely have to
make the fork blade stronger for disc use (unless one already overbuilt the
fork to start with).

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-14 Thread William R.
Hey Bob E, I like your Trek too. I see you have a lot of a long stem showing
there like I do. Do you experience flex like I do? My 7000 is strictly a short
distance bike so it's not a big issue. But boy can I flex that cockpit! I have
it set up as my train station bike now. Generic saddle that came on my
Appaloosa chained to the frame for security. It's a good bike that works for me
with that bar/stem combo.

[RBW] WTB: Sackville Hub-Area Bags

Hello,
I'm looking for a set of the hub-area bags for an upcoming tour; something
in decent condition and hopefully in the olive color to match my saddle
sack. Thanks
Cheers, John

Have you ridden with discs? Because they do work better. Period. Not even
in terms of absolute power, but the modulation of hydraulic discs is a
wonderful feeling.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carry a Multi-tool or loose tools, and why?

2016-05-14 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Count me as another who does not wear a belt and suspenders. I've ridden
several thousand miles and never had a chain or shifter cable (or spoke) break.
Will that happen one day? Quite likely. I certainly won't carry my bike nine
miles. I'll hitch, look really sad and hope for a lift, or I'll use my other
multi-tool that I always have: my cellphone.

That just is not true. I would be happy to engage, but I think it would
shorten the conversation, for all, if you agree to at least that bit.

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-14 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Eric, I did mention in my post that I own two disc brake-equipped bikes –
one rather fanciful full hydraulic and one plain-jane mechanical. So yes, I
have used disc brakes. Both disc brake setups perform fine, but the point
is I seldom wish I have disc brakes when riding my rim brake bikes, with
the main exception being rainy days when the scratching sound of
contaminated pads-on-rims really irritates me. For me, discs don't really
offer better modulation than my rim brakes (that I've spent effort setting
up to my liking).
