That's a fine example... I've a 58 cm version in brown, and it's an amazing
bike to ride and to look at. Truthfully, the 60 cm with a 57.5 top tube would
fit me a hair better, but...

Anyhow, gotta get me some Compass tires soon!

Re: [RBW] Curious: Betty Foy vs. Cheviot

2016-06-12 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
One other reason I seem to hazily remember was to do away with the his/hers
model names and different paint schemes for the same bicycle with the
mixtes (a marketing necessity perhaps, mainly so guys would still feel
manlihoodness when buying/riding one)--Glorius/Wilbury, Foy/Gomez. The
Cheviut/Cheviot (still technically two names!) is gender neutral. I think
they realized they somehow went down the same road with Clem/Clementine,
though (at least in my mind) that made some sense because, while
technically not the case, you could argue Clementine was a feminine form of
Clem. Which I guess also pissed people off.) Then you could argue that the
Cheviot is essentially the mixte version of the Sam, so why not give the
Clem Smith Jr. mixte version a different name. Answer: see previous
sentence. Therefor, H or L.

With regard to the chainstay thing, if you do further digging, a more
current posting on chainstay length, involving I believe metaphors with
station wagons, and kayaks, or was it canoes, might somewhat contradict the
earlier statement that you found, which was probably Grant not hyping the
chainstay thing too much. But why would you add 10cm (that's cm, Leah--a
bike with 45mm chainstays, even 55mm, would be uncomfortable) to a bicycle
just because "it can't hurt." Having said that, don't sweat it, you won't
notice because you will not be riding one then switching to the other for
the ride back, which is about the only way you could notice. And you might
like it less! After all that, if you still have your heart set on a bit of
extra chainstay and a cooler name and headbadge, and you can afford it, and
you decide to do it, you can always paint the hearts red yourself. Not that
difficult! But no, get the tandem. *That* is cool.

(For the record, the Cheviot has 45, 50, & 54cm chainstays, depending on
bike size. I don't know what the exact lengths of the BF chainstays are,
but I would guess plenty long enough to get the job done right.)

[RBW] Re: Tallux Stem Measurements - 10cm? 11cm?

2016-06-12 Thread Garth
The 10,11,12 cm. etc. refer to the *length of the extension/reach*, the
horizontal part so yes, the larger the number the longer the
*extension/reach*. This is not to be confused with the *length of the
quill*, which is the vertical part, usually from the min. insertion mark
to the top of the stem. This number is often not listed by websites.

Both of these number work in unison to determine where the bars will
actually be.

Here, I went digging on the BLUG to see what I could find. Here's a quote by

discount, to help us pay for the order. It’s a beautiful bike. Same as the

So, Michael must be right - pretty much the same bike. Though I still like the
name and head badge of the Cheviot better. If they don't fill the heart
cut-outs in the lugs in red on the BF blue Chevs, I'll really be over my

Re: [RBW] Curious: Betty Foy vs. Cheviot

2016-06-12 Thread Michael Hechmer
No. I set one up with a 46/26/24 & 8speed 13-28. It worked fine with the
chain that had been on a Specialized Sequoia.

If you can tell the frame difference between this 55cm Betty & 50 cm Chevy,
you have a better eye than me.

Even the heart shaped cut outs are identical. Only the paint job is
different.

[RBW] Re: Raw Cotton Handlebar Tape Experiment

2016-06-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
"It would be fair to say that your testing would be generally in drier and
cooler air that in north Texas, right?"

Yes, that is true, but I'm not sure what effect that would have or not
have. I've found the raw tape reaches a point of grimy faster than
shellacked cotton faster, but then doesn't really get any worse, whereas
the shellacked cotton continues to get more grimy. For me, these fairly
equal results make it so I don't want the expense/effort of shellack
because the delta is minimal after x amount of time. I suspect that is true
regardless of climate.

[RBW] Raw Cotton Handlebar Tape Experiment

2016-06-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
This morning I switched to a shorter stem on my QB, finally (I think, the proof
is in a longer ride) getting it dialed in. Pro tip: remove gummy before sliding
handlebars into stem or suffer mightily for your laziness!

In unwrapping my top layer of raw cotton tape, I discovered an experiment I’d
forgotten about. The under layer of cotton tape was a two layer shellac I’d had
on for three months before covering it with the raw. I’ve had my raw cotton top
layer on for over a year now. They looked equally worn/weathered, and the raw
cotton was slightly less grimy. Fascinating! Plus, cheep Scot that I am, I
reused the top raw cotton tape, wrapping it as the now single layer. Now
testing to see how long it lasts!

Well, I'm certainly not Jan in terms of skills and abilities. I just
checked the map and decided to reserve the choice to do the shorter
version, especially if the PM loop isn't really suitable for the smooth
tires with fenders.

Thanks for providing the route and maps. That's very helpful.

Re: [RBW] How do you glue wire (from a light) to a rack?

2016-06-12 Thread Tim Butterfield
I'm not sure if this would work, but I came up with a couple of ideas. The
first was to glue a plastic straw to the rack and run the wire through it.
They come in various sizes even down to the small coffee stirrer size.
Another possibility would be to glue some shrink wrap to the rack. After
feeding the wire through, apply heat to reduce the size. Since I haven't
tried it, I wonder if the shrinking of the wrap would detach it from the
glue. Not too hard to test, though. Both of these should be reversible
without affecting the wire itself.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam / SimpleOne Sizing?

2016-06-12 Thread cyclotourist
Only if you live in DC: local pickup only (no shipping)

Eric, I have an 89PBH, and own both a 60 and 62 'Beam. My 62 is a touch too
big for dirt riding, so it's set up as my townie bike. The 60 is my trail
bike and is great for situations where I need to put my foot down fast.

My $.02: I think you can ride either happily, but for a city commuter, the
62 would be a touch better.

[RBW] CLEM pre-order

2016-06-12 Thread Joe Bernard
I was gonna do it, then I wasn't gonna do it, then I did it! I'm adding a 52
mustard CLEM to the electrified 45 BRG in the stable. I'm at the tall end of
the 45 fitting me with Choco-Moose bars, so the more stretched out 52 should be
great with the stock Boscos. Only pedal power for this one ;)

If you're thinking about a CLEM, the $1300 buy-in should be ending pretty soon.
About a month ago Dave said he expected them in July, so now's the time.
Mustard!

Rene,

Yes the Atlantis would be my choice, though sans fenders and obviously
lowish tire pressure. If you can I'd mount knobby tires, my recollection of
the PM loop is rutty with baby heads but Jan always proves that a supple
tire can do amazing things, so I'm not gonna say it can't be done. I've
been rolling the TB's Tubeless and where a supple tire would eventually
flat I haven't had any problems for months.

[RBW] How do you glue wire (from a light) to a rack?

2016-06-12 Thread René Sterental
Saw this on the zippy zappy thread, and it just so happened I was thinking
if I should go that route for the cable of my Edelux II on my Atlantis. I'm
about to do the setup and was going to route the cable across the rack, but
don't really like how it looks.

Then I though about zip-tying it to the edge of the rack, where the front
Rando bag would hide it and that led to the thought that perhaps it could
be glued to minimize the use of zip ties.

Who would have thought that the subject of gluing would come up and I would
just see it tonight?

Please send instructions or links to instructions regarding how to glue the
cable to the rack... :-)

Thanks!

René

[RBW] Quickbeam / SimpleOne Sizing?

2016-06-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Here's a 60 SimpleOne. They don't come up often - I don't think many of *any*
size were made - so you might want to hop on it. Pick up only in Washington,
but maybe someone can facilitate buying and shipping.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/112011978713

Re: [RBW] RE: RE: RBW Listers Take Over The West Point Inn, June 24 & 25 - Join us there!!! Proposed Ride.

2016-06-12 Thread René Sterental
Ha ha ha ha!!! Good to know!

Both of them run smooth Compass tires with metal fenders; 35mm on the Homer
and 38mm on the Atlantis. Based on what you're saying, I think the Atlantis
would be better, would you agree?

René, glad you can make it There is a big lot at Pantoll, but it
fills up on the weekend. The ride is starting early, so shouldn't be a
problem. I think it's $8 for day/24 hr parking. From the lot at Pantoll,
it's two miles to the Inn, so budget time for that.

Here's the route to the Inn: https://goo.gl/maps/aK7V9Zo2Tex
This is what it looks like for most of the way:

If driving on Saturday, can you tell me or send me a Google map
location to know where to park? I don't know the area.
