[RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-05 Thread dstein
That's a shame, it is a great store. One I keep meaning to buy a hatchet
from despite not having any real need for a hatchetyet. I loved the
idea but was always worried there isn't enough local support in WC to keep
it going, making it more of a destination place which is a little
conflicting given the close proximity to HQ down the street. I think I
remember them doing a pop up store in the Mission before this, wonder if
something in the city would be more feasible (with the even crazier high
rents and overhead of operating in SF)? Or Oakland?

Anyone up for a Saturday ride from Oakland to BBH to buy some stuff in a
few weeks (mixed terrain preferably)?

Great ride, Jon! My wife and I rode that or a predecessor in the early 90's
when we were at DU, and found it very disconnected and difficult to
navigate. We subsequently preferred to hit the hills and hike and backpack,
and biking took a back seat for a few decades. That makes the trail sound

[RBW] Re: Smaller Riv sizing

2016-07-05 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Andrew,
Can you elaborate on what's uncomfortable for you on the 56 Sam?

I agree with Benz that some measurement is off. I'm 170cm (5'7"), PBH 81cm
and ride SH a few mm under 70cm.

I ride a 56 AHH, which has just a wee bit clearance for pelvic bone, and 48
Hunqapillar. The Hunqapillar is sized down-- providing a little more
stand-over clearance in the woods and a lower head tube to get the bars
lower. Could probably use a less tall stem to get them down a little more.

I've found that the bikes are quite different with different handle bars. I
really like the AHH with albatross. The Hunqapillar with albatross was ok--
but probably too close. Drops work fine on both bikes, but the position of
the tops and hoods feels very different (with same stem).

Good luck,
shoji

Re: [RBW] Re: Nine Speed Index Setup

2016-07-05 Thread Matt C.
Tandem cable tension can be difficult to navigate as to what works when
actually riding VS in the stand. I worked for a company that owned 6 rental
tandems with trigger shifters. They weren't high quality shifters either, so
tuning them perfectly always seemed somewhat of an impossibility. I found that
the indexing always works better when the cable is slightly looser than a
normal bike. Also I open up the low cog a bit more (maybe half turn on the
adjustment screw). This meant it would jump into the low without an ultra tight
cable and conversely would also drop back into the highs easily.

[RBW] Re: Hunq porteur options?

IIRC, Clem uses the Hunqapillar fork. Also, the Hunqapillar (at least my
first gen version) has mounting points on top of the fork crown. You can
sorta see it in this pic: https://flic.kr/p/mtcPxp

Rob of Ocean Air Cycles has some good mods on his blog on using those
mounting points (which the Rambler also has) and Surly hardware.

Good luck!

I've been considering a porteur rack as well for my Hillborne. I was
eyeing the Soma Porteur
(http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/porteur-rack-stainless-steel)
because it had the lower crossbars for panniers. After meeting the nice
guy who runs Pass and Stow (Matt?) at NAHBS, I would probably buy theirs.
Really solid and built in Oakland.

[RBW] Re: Smaller Riv sizing

2016-07-05 Thread Garth

Above all you really have to know yourself as no one else can. Sure,
someone can measure your body in all sorts of ways but this omits the most
important thing of all , the riders sense of themselves: balance on and
within the bike is but one example. Call it intangibles if you will, and
they are infinite. Two bodies can be the exact same measurements but
that's just superficial and further inquiry would always reveal
differences/preferences of varying degrees from "similar" to "night and
day".

Riv and every other bike seller do what they can to steer you in a
direction as it's in their best interest of course but just remember it's
by no means absolute, it's merely as suggestion based on their preferences
which is the best anyone can offer another.

With production bikes they can never fit everyone all the time and
certainly not the same way. It is what it is :) Fortunately there are lots
of bikes to choose from and customs too. Even these days you can get full
custom frames for quite a reasonable price comparable to that of a Sam.

Hesitation in upshifting is usually due to excess cable tension.
