Selling Rivs and allowing a customer access to their shop to build wheels? Talk
about full service. That is over the top! You may be right about best shop

Certainly can do something like that. I'm going to be working on something

What are the dimensions on the one you have now?

Re: [RBW] Re: Another S3X hub

2016-09-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Yes, I know, such a juvenile name, but the advantage of this product
compared to the AW is that direct is high, so that with a freewheel you
have a sturdy and low-drag 3 speed hub with a decent cruising ratio and
some good climbing gears, and don't waste High on some hugely useless
overdrive.

Compared to adding a derailleur to the '03, this is a very quick and easy
temporary swap.

Why did SA choose a 133% overdrive for the AW's high? I can't fathom that.

just yesterday, I was pedaling quickly through an intersection in the

I turned on my front helmet blinkie, looked straight at the driver, and

Fourth year... We're no longer toddlers! RSR is a fun, challenging,

challenging, but doable without super-athletic training. Need a bike that

Re: [RBW] Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-12 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
MIPS technology does add to safety. I know 2 different MTB riders that hit
trees head on and credited the rational aspect of MIPS with reducing the impact.

POC makes some of the safest helmets out there. Rene, a few other xl sizes (I
need a 62) in the more affordable range are the Bell Transition, several
Cannondales, Giro Hex xl, and Lazar in l/xl.

It is highly recommended by several safety organizations that your poly foam
helmet be replaced every 5 years due to foam degradation. Previously they said
7 years. I split the difference and retire a helmet after 6 years. I've trashed
3 helmets in crashes in 10 years-all low speed crashes, 2 my head hit first.
Saved head injuries in each crash. Several of my riding buddies have had very
serious crashes and they say the helmet saved them from severe head injury (2
had cracked vertabra). Head and neck injuries can be reduced with a good
helmet.

Lastly, even the less expensive helmets have interior foam sculpting to get
good air flow. The more expensive helmets are highly sculpted to increase air
flow amazingly well. If you haven't tried a good helmet in the last few years,
you owe to yourself to give the new crop of helmets a try. Helmets really have
come a ways in fit and comfort as well as safety the past few years.

Just remember, most crashes happen unexpectedly. There is no reaction time.
Your choice to wear an old helmet or no helmet is an emotional decision, not a
logical decision.

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

[RBW] Re: How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Only positive responses from the shops. Interestingly the older guys are
kind of neutral, the younger ones tend to really appreciate it. On the
trails only positive, mixed in with amazement "Your rode up here on
that?!?!?!" from the MTB crowd.

Funniest anecdote was when another rider at a rest stop one day told me I
would be faster with clip in pedals/shoes. He was possibly right, I
chuckled to myself riding off on the Quickbeam, thinking that adding 28
more gear ratios would make me faster as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-12 Thread Scott Loveless
I have a Giro Reverb that doesn't look like it came off a Power
Rangers studio set. It's round, moderately comfortable and has good
ventilation. Other than the vent slots not being quite big enough to
get a finger through for scalp scratching, it's pretty much the Moe
Howard helmet. When I was commuting about 6 miles each way I'd put
tape over the front and top vents to keep my forehead from freezing
during the winter.

http://www.giro.com/us_en/products/men/helmets/urban/reverb.html

It looks like they also have a helmet called the Sutton that may be
more your style. It's tiny vent holes would leave me overheating in
all but the most frigid conditions.

[RBW] Re: BICYCLE 'COCKPIT'

2016-09-12 Thread James Valiensi
Bicycles been around a lot longer than airplanes, but now they have
cockpits?

If you climb into a Pitts Special you are in a cockpit and if you get into
an F-1 race car you are in a cockpit. If you ride a bike you are not in a
cockpit, you are on a bike. Ask a Hells Angel what he has in his Harley's
cockpit...

The way I see it - referring to a bicycle handlebar and associated
components to a cockpit is a way to try to elevate the bicycle to more than
it is. Which is sad because the beauty of bicycles has been the simplicity
of the form. The false elevation is equivalent to claiming a degree from a
fake online college is equal to one from an accredited university. I don't
buy into the need to repurpose the word 'cockpit' to best describe the
bicycle controls - we have been successfully discussing this for longer
than my life time without calling it a 'cockpit'.

BTW - the only bike that can reasonable fit definition of a cockpit are the
land speed streamliners (where one actually climbs into the bike).

For me the battle is lost - The bike world has moved beyond me.

[RBW] FS: NEW 26" Wheelset (All Silver, XT M760 / Mavic XC-717 / DT Butted Satinless)

2016-09-12 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW folk,

I have a new (as in "not ever used") set of nice 26" wheels that I bought
for a build years ago, but never used. Would like to move them out of my
garage and into yours!

The wheels are all silver, built by one of the online mail-order places,
but I don't recall who. I've typically used Colorado Cyclist, but maybe
Excel Sports? Purchased to build a Waterford 1900 "Adventure Touring" bike
that just didn't work out for me. The wheels are for rim brakes only
(canti, v, centerpull, etc...) with silver Shimano XT M760 hubs, silver
Mavic XC717 rims, 32 DT butted stainless spokes front & rear, silver brass
nipples. Includes silver XT skewers and original hang tag for the XT hub.

The real prize here is the Mavic XC-717 rims, which are no longer produced
in silver. A great lightweight, strong do-everything rim with a stellar
reputation on and off-road. All XC-717 rims come drilled for Schrader, but
with an insert for Presta fixed in place. So, easy to use either type valve.

I did mount a cassette and tires on these and clamp them in my un-built
Waterford frame to admire them while the frame sat in my living room
waiting to be built. Not a mark on them, though perhaps a little dust.

$290 + $35 shipping

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] Re: How to sell a Rivendell Bike

2016-09-12 Thread dstein
I've had good luck with craigslist but I live in the bay area so no
surprise there. But I'd recommend simultaneously listing on here and
craigistlist for a few weeks to see if there are any bites. Not many people
buy a bike like a Rivendell impulsively, it usually appeals to someone who
knows they want one, don't want to spring for a new one, and check
craigslist and this list regularly. After a few weeks I'd throw it on ebay
as a 'buy it now' with a set price. You can start with a higher asking
price to make up for the fees, and I'd also let someone make an offer on it
(this feature is nice because you can set a floor for an offer and the
system will automatically reject or accept it). From there, if its still
not selling and you're desperate you can send it to auction with a minimum
price (or keep relisting it at a slightly lower price till someone 'buys it
now'.). It'll eventually sell, its a combination of patience and also
adjusting your price accordingly to meet market demand. But definitely list
on ebay if it doesn't sell locally in a few weeks.

[RBW] Re: How to sell a Rivendell Bike

2016-09-12 Thread dstein
Also, if you have any bells and whistles on the bike (racks, leather
saddle, dyno lights, fancy pedals, saddlebags, rando bags, etc), i'd sell
those separately. Plenty of people on here will buy them for a reasonable
price, and it allows you to list your bike at an even lower price since you
removed some expensive accessories.

Re: [RBW] 2017 Redlands Strada Rossa

2016-09-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
René, would be great if you could come down! We have plenty of sofa-lodging
available, and if that's not your thing, motels. Philip has come down
before, maybe you can talk him into carpooling south!

Routes change every year, intentionally.

Here is this year's: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12362448
2015: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7148234
2014: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/4102226

You can see the similarities, but they are really quite different. I think
this year's was the best. They're all going to be about 60 miles, and have
approximately 6,000 ft of climbing. That's the magic ratio of 10:1,000 to
let you know you're on an interesting ride!

The BIG built in for all the routes, is that there are multiple good
options to cut the route short, and just meander back under your own power
and still enjoy the day. I think just about everyone that has done the ride
has taken advantage of on of those pinch points to bypass a chunk of the
route, but still stay on the course. Shared experience among riders is a
big goal, so we want people to be on the same course no matter how much
they ride.

There is usually a shorter, 50 km/30 mile route option available. Last year
there was also a 100 mile route, but that stretched our resources a bit too
much. May not happen this year, too early to say.

Here are some great photos to build up some
enthusiasm:

Re: [RBW] 2017 Redlands Strada Rossa

2016-09-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
I get a 6-week paid sabbatical in 2017. I'm thinking about burning a
couple weeks of that on a solo bike tour. My easy concept is to do the
coast route from SF to LA, and visit my mom. My more adventurous option is
to do the Sierra Cascades Route and visit my mom. I ordered maps for both
options from Adventure Cycling and they arrived today. My exit from the
Sierra Cascades Route would be Yucaipa. The Sierra Cascades route
intersects Strada Rossa in two places. That would be a fun side trip near
the end of a tour.

[RBW] WTB - Paselas

2016-09-12 Thread M D Smith
Hello all-

I'm looking for one or two new or lightly used 700x32 non-tourguard Panaracer
Paselas tire(s) with the tan sidewalls.

I will probably just end up buying some new ones, but I want to throw it out
there in case someone traded up (or down) and have some lying around. These
are for a city/commuter bike, so dirty is ok as long as there's life left In
them.

If anyone can help me out, please hit me off-list at beewak-at-gmail and let me
know what you'd want for them shipped to 11218 (or I can pick them up if you're
in NYC.)

Cheers- Mike

[RBW] Re: Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-12 Thread Austin ^
B17 Select is good for fairly high mileage. Mine is three years old with
about 20,000 miles, is polished to a beautiful deep brown with no signs of
fatigue and I've never had to tighten the bolt. I ride daily year round in
all weather in the pacific northwest, and I probably remember to put the
seat cover on in the rain about half the time. The bike lives indoors,
saddle dries out between really wet rides, and I treat it with montana
pitch blend leather dressing when the seasons change. The only real down
side (which isn't likely a huge consideration here) is that it's not the
lightest saddle on earth. I like it enough to have two more put back to
fill its role when it finally gives up.

Hi Austin -

I've only seen three attempted posts from you so far (at least if you were
using this email account.)

There was a comment in a B17 thread which got passed through, this one -
also passed through - and another one right afterwards lamenting that your
posts weren't going through.

As I post on the main page of the group - all new members are moderated,
and the quickest way is to email me directly.

Hope that answers your concerns.

[RBW] Bars for Climbing

2016-09-12 Thread Bustini
I'm close to buying an Appaloosa, to be used for everything including
loaded touring. There will be plenty of climbing to be done, so my question
is this: Does the Choco-Moose bar allow for enough forward and downward
lean to make for a decent (for me) climbing position? And how about a stiff
headwind? Is the position too upright? I really like a rather upright
riding position for most conditions, but I like to crouch when necessary.
Should I consider putting drops on the bike? I know this is all somewhat
subjective, but I could use some sage advice that is based in actual
experience. Thank you all!

[RBW] Re: BICYCLE 'COCKPIT'

2016-09-12 Thread Richard Rios
In the spirit of Grant and Rivendell and just riding, like when we were kids
and not worrying about it so much. I think cockpit is a great name for it, and
in no uncertain way trying to somehow elevate the humble bike. Quite the
contrary actually. As I have heard it said riding a bike is as close to flying
as you can get without wings. Sure feels like that to me... When I was a kid
and rode my bike down big hills and got into an "aero" tuck I would sometimes
make machine gun noieses and pretend I was in a fighter plane. In fact when not
chasing down roadies on my rivendell for giggles, I still do... That is pretend
I am flying and make ratatatat noieses with my mouth. So rock on cock pitters.
But be warned if you ever see me rollin up from behind you on a fast downhill,
know you might find yourself in my cross hairs and will be shown no
quarter...and I expect the same !)

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-12 Thread Valerie Yates
I did a loaded tour with a lot of climbing (the San Juan Skyway clockwise
from Durango) on my Joe and I quite enjoyed the seated, upright climbing
position. It was completely comfortable and the views were amazing. I think
the handlebars would allow a more downward angle but, for me, it was the
saddle that made that position undesirable. A saddle that is comfortable
sitting upright is not, for me, comfortable leaning forward due to back of
thigh chafing. So while I normally ride a Brooks B17 Imperial on my drop
bar bikes, I prefer the Brooks B67 on the Joe -- but only if I am seated
fairly upright. I hope that helps!

[RBW] Re: BICYCLE 'COCKPIT'

2016-09-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
All my rides are ruined now. James is RIGHT and now my eyes are opened
there is NO going back. I now angrily stomp to the stable, er, garage,
mount, no, that's not right either, swing my leg over the saddle, but
really, IS it a saddle, into the cockpit of my mammoth and I only get more
and more infuriated with every pedal stroke because:
1) James is RIGHT! SAS-A-FRAS-A-FRICK-A-FRACK ... I'm NOT in a cockpit in
any TRUE sense of the word. MADDENING! WHEN WILL IT STOP? i have no missile
button. I have a missal, but it DOESN'T HAVE A BUTTON!
Ayye-yii-yiii-yiii-y-y-y!
2) I'm really NOT on a mammoth. I'm forced to admit that now. Sigh. This,
perhaps, is the biggest devastation of all. My self image of riding
majestically high upon the gently swaying shoulders of a hairy, musky
scented, massive methane producing beast who smoothly lumbers at a
ground-eating pace no matter the terrain. No more. Gone now, forever.

Oh. Wait. That didn't happen. I had a blast today in my cockpit atop my
mammoth wending my way up and down delicious buttery single track with
aspen quivering in the crispened breeze, their shiny brilliant green of
spring and summer tarnished with wear and showing signs of needing
polishing before one last extended spectacular hurrah! before winter. Does
anyone know whence I might buy hay in bulk? Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Dear Bustini, congrats on soon lulling the trigger on an Appaloosa! Sweet!
I can't speak to choco-moose bars (though I've come across
choco-moose-muffins on occation, but they are another thing entirely.
Useful for starting fires in a pinch, once dried though). Grin. Here is
some generic bar advice based on my experience with riding drops, Albatross
(including inverted), Moustache, Albastache, Boscos, and watching my
daughters ride Boscos on their old bikes and now their Clementines.

1) Arm bend will get you however low you need to go, and the percentage of
"need" a low position in a given day on the road/trail is usually pretty
low (but headwinds on the open planes are a real buggaboo!). As Valerie
alludes to, comfort in the saddle and with the relationship between saddle
and bars is more important than getting low. Dial that in, then figure out
how to get low when you need to. You'll be stunned how seldom that is, and
then how brief it is (again, barring a day riding next to Laura, Mary, Ma,
and Pa in their wagon). Grin.

2) The "wrong" bars from Rivendell are generally "right" or at least
workable most of the time. If you find they aren't in enough situations
that you are motivated to experiment with your cockpit setup, that's it's
own amazing adventure. Mean road, get the bike you want, ride the bars it
comes with, get to know them, love what they do well, discover what you
wish they did better, scratch your head, and go from there. Grin.

3) All Grant bars have climbing and descending positions. He and the rest
of the elves ride up and down Mount Diablo until Satan's grin looks like
Mr. Ed's it's so rutted. Play with them. You'll find them. Where they are
may surprise you, but you'll find them.

4) Have fun!

With abandon,
Patrick

Oh one thing I forgot in my post -
My frustration lies not with the Rivendell folks but the marketing side of

[RBW] Bars for Climbing

2016-09-12 Thread Kai Vierstra
A lot of people have addressed seated climbing, and choco-mooses are great for
seated climbing, as are boscos, albatross, bullmoose, and on... but what I like
about the choco-moose is the relative flatness of the bar and how that helps
with a standing position. On steep hills, I like standing and pulling with my
arms at times. I have found that the choco-mooses and the albastaches are good
for this.
Hope that helps

Easy-peasy, Bill! Just plan enough time to make it down... that six hour
drive can easily turn into eight or 10 on a Friday afternoon! :-/

Joe, I've longed hoped to get a solid cohort coming down from the Greater

this is the one!

FYI, you can do this in San Diego the weekend after the RSR:

15% TDC pressures for a 32mm El Pass for YOUR 200# Total Weight (175+25) is
52/64 psig F/R. So YES 65/70 psig F/R would be HIGH
13 psig high in F
  6 psig high in R.

The rear is reasonable. The front probably could lose 10 psig.

>From the responses in another post on Tire Prressure, 2 or 3 members
crashed due to collapse tires from UNDERINFLATION. They were generally
more than 25% under inflated, i.e., actual pressure was << 75% of 15% TDC
pressure via Berto.

I feel if you religiously maintain pressures >= 75% of the 15% TDC
pressure, you will be safe from collapsing tires, yet enjoy the benefits of
lower pressure,i.e., a good compromise

Re: [RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks again for this. I'll try 55/65 or so, though because my only high
pressure (ie, > 30 psi) gauge is the doubtful one on the pump, I'll have to
get another one. The other day the pump gauge said 20-25 for the 51 mm F
Freds, but the low pressure gauge showed ~ 15 in front; and indeed it felt
soft to my thumb.

Does anyone have a road Presta valve gauge to sell cheap or to trade?

[RBW] Re: 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-12 Thread William!
Another vote for the Shikoro's. They are basically just fat Jack Brown
blues – just as round, just as smooth, just as hard to flat. It's what I
really always wanted in a tire for all the years I rode JB's.

Has been my daily driver most of the year – mostly paved, some dirt, some
gravel. Ride them at 70 or 80 on paved rides and they roll like butter,
otherwise 50 or 60 and they get most jobs done with aplomb.

I also tried the Supple Vitesse (~= fat Jack Brown Greens). Lovely, but not
enough flat protection for my riding.

But werent Bertos calculations on stiff tires? Much stiffer than the sidewalls
many use today? Compass, GB, etc.

Also on narrower rims than used today?

So does his table really apply anymore?

[RBW] Nitto Tallux Stem - Trade or Sale

2016-09-12 Thread Santosh Iyer
I have a brand new unmounted Nitto Tallux 25.4 mm, 10 cm stem which I purchased
from Rivendell a couple of years back. I am looking for a 6 or 7 cm tallux and
am willing to trade.

Else, willing to sell for $70 + shipping which a few dollars cheaper than on
the Rivendell site.

[RBW] Re: How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-12 Thread Alexei Marcoux
When I lived in Chicago, I got much Riv-love from the now-defunct Rapid
Transit Cycle Shop (one of whose mechanics, Doug Haynes, built up
beautifully for me a fixie-with-a-front-drum-brake SimpleOne). Here in
midtown Omaha, I have received favorable responses to my Rivendell
ownership from Olympia Cycles (who built up my first-ever derailleur-geared
bike, a Velo Orange Campeur) and from Riv dealer Omaha Bicycle Company
(which will supply me imminently with a new 52cm Clem Low in mustard).

[RBW] Bay Area: Angel Island Thursday night camp site up for grabs (Sept 15)

2016-09-12 Thread al lin
Hey RBW Group,

I just realised I can't take that much time off work to make this midweek
overnighter happen, and hope someone with a more flexible schedule can take
my rad campsite on Angel Island.

You're bound by the ferry, and the last ferry out is on at Thursday,
1:05pm, and the first one back to SF is at Friday, 1:55pm. More info
here: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/ferry/angel-island/

If anyone would like to take my spot, hit me up!

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-12 Thread Eric Karnes
I haven't ridden the Choco-Moose as it's a bit too wide for my tastes (and
narrow shoulders). But I use a VO Porteur bar, which is (kind of) a
narrower version. They share a similar forward position, which when
wrapped, I find fantastic for climbing. They remind me of gripping the
bar-ends on my old mountain bike. Also a great position for stretched-out
cruising on the flats.

[RBW] New threadless bullmoose bar

2016-09-12 Thread Eric Karnes
FYI:

For anyone with a mid-nineties mountain bike project, Velo Orange just
started stocking this new Nitto bullmoose variation:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/b903-bullmoose-bar-by-nitto-silver.html

It's an absolute beauty! If I still had my old Litespeed, I'd snatch one up!
