[RBW] Re: SHIPPING BY AMTRAK

2016-09-21 Thread Scott McLain
Hi Kellie,
I don't know if you intended to start in Cumberland MD, but if so you could
see if the guys at Gravel and Grind would pick it up for you. You could
also bike flight it to them.

When I have done biking trips in the past, I would have one bike shop send
my bike to another so that they could get better rates. No longer
necessary with bike flights.

Re: [RBW] SHIPPING BY AMTRAK

2016-09-21 Thread Joe Broach
I've shipped with Amtrak. It's pretty slick. Things to note:

They'll charge you for the special giant box if they don't happen to ha e a
used one around. $15 I think?

They won't let you put anything else in the empty space. I'd thought I
could stash my empty panniers in the void. Nope.

It was great to be able to ride to the station on the bike I was shipping.

[RBW] SHIPPING BY AMTRAK

2016-09-21 Thread Pondero
I did it last year, from Fort Worth to DC, for my C&O tour. I'm planning to do
it again this year, pretty soon, for my GAP tour. It was especially easy for
me to have my daughter able to receive it at the other end. I think Bike
Flights would be less expensive, but much more disassembly/assembly is required.

Re: [RBW] SHIPPING BY AMTRAK

2016-09-21 Thread Eric Norris
I recently sold a bike and shipped it via Amtrak to New York. Shipping,
including insurance, was about $80. I used their box (bigger than the box you
would use for BikeFlights) and a bunch of pipe insulation to cushion the bike,
and it arrived safe and sound at the Amtrak station in Syracuse in about three
days.

The biggest advantage to using Amtrak is that you can use their box, which
requires only that you remove the pedals and turn the handlebars. The seat can
stay in place (except, I suppose, on a very tall frame).

Shipping the same size box via BikeFlights, FedEx, or UPS would cost around
$600 (I checked).

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-21 Thread Richard Rios
Here's my 02 and this is based off an 85ish pbh and purchasing a cross check.
56 for modern sporty bars below saddle, 58 for levelish bars. I'd even consider
a 60 If you want them way up there Riv style. Also depends on how you feel
about spacer stack. Surlys come with uncut steerer tube so if you don't mind
spacers and upsloping stem you can ride a smaller frame no prob and still get
the bars at a reasonable height. Lots of variables though just depends on what
you are looking for and aesthetic preferences...In the end either should work
fine with no worries or regrets.

I think the blue and subsequent had more clearance than the original
orange and cream ones. In any event, even switching to 42mm Hetres will
result in additional bottom bracket drop, because the Rambouillet was
originally designed with 28mm tires in mind, and 650Bx42 are ~ 5 mm
smaller in diameter.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-21 Thread John Stowe
Since I don't see it mentioned above: I have been happy with my Giro Sutton
MIPS. Fits my large/long head (61cm) just fine, doesn't look like a
spaceship, soft visor, pretty light, good coverage in the back and a
complete hard shell means no exposed foam when hanging from a bag and
bumping into walls/train seats/etc. I managed to snag one off of Sierra
Trading Post at the end of last year for cheap, less than half price. I
don't know how much the MIPS accomplishes, but like others said: it might
help, certainly won't hurt, and doesn't cost much, so why not.

I also have a Giro Atmos hanging in the shed, rarely used unless I know I'm
going on a long hot ride and want the ventilation. It's a crash replacement
for a previous Atmos I was wearing when I got knocked down by a U-turning
taxi (DC riders: yes, I was in the Penn Ave. bike lane). I didn't hit my
head very hard, but enough to dent the foam and separate the shell. Riv
content: the insurance payout funded my Sam! So I guess getting hit turned
out to be good for my cycling life, in the end...

[RBW] Re: Becoming an "Unracer"

2016-09-21 Thread masmojo
Although I am a short term Rivendell owner, I had an XO-1 for many years and
have ridden other "Rivish" bikes for some time. I cut my serious cycling teeth
riding light weight Cruisers or Klunkers. I was racing mountain bikes for
several years when I was riding the local bike path when a group of roadies
passed me, I was not going fast, but that whole competitive thing kicked in
and before long I had caught them up, passed them and proceeded to just check
out! Felt good, but it took a lot of energy and I was done riding sooner than I
planned. That got me to thinking. The performance of my mountain bike was just
close enough to that of the road bikes of the time, that I could do that and as
long as I could do it I would! I thought "if I was riding my Clunker I would
not feel compelled to run with those people", because I realistically couldn't!
That is basically what I did & I've been unracing for 20+ years now!

2016-09-21 Thread masmojo
Leaf, sounds like you just didn't have the right Riv.! The Hilsen is a great
bike, but based on you other bikes probably not the best match to your riding.
A Hunqapillar, Joe Appaloosa or even an Atlantis would probably suit you
better. I have a Cross Check & it is a great bike, but it's not a Rivendell!

one more thing to add for city riding. The tread is thick enough to resist
minor glass shards from puncturing immediately, but they tend to embed
themselves in the tires and eventually puncture the tube if left
unattended. Picking over the tires and dislodging glass and other debris is
something that I started doing once or twice a week. Seems to reduce
punctures.

exertion to a pleasant level.

This is very unlikely. A 42mm 650B wheel + tire has about the same outside
diameter as a 700Cx23 wheel + tire, and it's even questionable as to whether a
42mm 650B will fit a Rambouillet frame.

This is very unlikely. A 42mm 650B wheel + tire has about the same
outside diameter as a 700Cx23 wheel + tire, and it's even questionable
as to whether a 42mm 650B will fit a Rambouillet frame.

[RBW] Re: Which saddle for the Riv tandem?

2016-09-21 Thread Julian
On our Bilenky (drop bar 650B touring setup) we have a B17 for the captain
and a Flyer S (ladies model) for the stoker. If you stick with the stock
non-sprung seatpost a sprung saddle for the stoker is a very good idea, as
the stoker will not see (and the captain will miss calling out) all of the
bumps, and so will not be able to unweight as readily as a single bike
rider.

I think on our HHH we might go with a Flyer/Flyer S combination.

Great story that, like others, follows a path similar to my own (add a bunch of
injuries to my story). That said, my nine year old started racing cyclocross
this year. While I know my competitive days are behind me, it has been a blast
to go around the race course with my kids and has fueled a lust for a Legolas.
