They'll be good replacements, yep. The ghost shifts--up in the mid and
upper range, it may take two clicks to lock the gear in. It works...but it
can be a challenge. I doubt I'll change my CLEMshifters, but they are a
transitional species, maybe.

So can the S2s be used as a replacement for the stock shifters that came on
the Clems? My wife has a Clementine that she just LOVES, but the stock
shifters have always given lots of "ghost" shifts, as discussed on this
list some time back. I would sure like to replace the shifters with
something that would be mounted in the same place for easy shifting, but
that would not have the problems.

DP would certainly have noted the relatively clean appearance! The trail
that I ride to get to the trail in the picture is a tow path that is topped
with ":dusty 12s", a finely ground limestone/dolomite aggregate that sets
up like cement, and eats drive trains. My defense is fairly frequent
washing of all exposed parts. . Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: my sp dynamo hub is unreliable

2016-10-15 Thread Tim Gavin
I have a PD-8, and it has worked flawlessly. I also have a couple different
Shimano dynamos that work great as well.

Have you checked the wire for missing insulation, which could cause a short?

I ask because I had a malfunction recently on another of my bikes (my Schwinn
KOM, with a Shimano DH-T780 hub and B Cyo Premium).

My light wouldn't turn on, no matter the switch position. However, I did notice
it flashed on when I shifted the front derailleur!? Turns out, when I changed
the FD cable, I accidentally ran it atop the wire to my taillight. The cable
rubbed through the insulation and caused the lighting system to short against
the steel frame.

Easily fixed, thankfully.

I've also had the wires pull themselves out of the plug that connects to the
dynamo.

Check your wires and connections thoroughly.

Best of luck,
Tim

Will the S2 be able to be mounted either conventionally up top on flat bars
or on the inside as you've done lately? Seems like the ratchet mech would
allow more mounting freedom than say Shimano on Paul's thumbies.

I have an ancient pair of BarCons that have never been disassembled & still
function well. Glad you won that internal debate regarding user
serviceability. How many of us regret opening something up, only to have
tiny bits go bouncing under the workbench?

Looks like Soma has the 12-32.

According to IRD website, they are no longer making the 12-32, only 12-30
and 12-34.

I need to know such things as I just rebuilt my 20 year old MTB 9 speed!

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-10-15 Thread Chris Halasz
A function I like not mentioned much here is for a helmet that does not make
the hair on your head too strange after its removal.

The three bands of styrofoam with thin foam padding that run from forehead to
crown, common on many large vent racer type helmets, make my hair look really
strange really quickly.

The Giro Sutton distorts my hair the least of many models I've tried.

It also provides plenty of protection from the sun.

I use the Sutton year-round in Tucson.

Cheers,

Chris

[RBW] RBW Cassettes from IRD

2016-10-15 Thread ted
I have one I bought a year or more ago. It's a 12-34 that starts with
12,13,14,16 which is not common at all. I've really liked the gearing it gives
me. Sadly I fear they didn't sell that well and perhaps RBW dropped the
project. I hope they will return before I wear mine out.

What nicer a way to spend a Fall day than to ride through a Fall landscape?
I hope your ride was as enjoyable as mine this afternoon (though I ended up
riding more pavement than dirt -- still, nice pavement in beautiful Fall
neighborhoods).

I don't know if I like Fall or Spring better. Both are beautiful. At least
Fall doesn't have all the pollens.

[RBW] WTB: Dynamo Wheel

2016-10-15 Thread Kieran J
Hi all:

I am looking for a used 700c Dynamo wheel for a project. I'd prefer a Shimano
or SP hub and a wide rim, like Dyad or Mavic A319.

Going on a winter commuter, so nothing fancy please. Colour and condition
negotiable.

Please direct message me if you have something. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Ride Report-- Mini tour of SW New Mexico and SE Arizona

2016-10-15 Thread John M

Thanks for the all the positive responses everyone. It was a good and
challenging trip for me and I'm glad that it resonated with a few of you as
well.

I'm not sure about that "recording prohibited" sign. Guess I never thought
too much about it. I assumed the Forest Service was trying to prevent
playback devices which can be used to located birds or other animals, but
are generally considered a sort of wildlife harassment. Maybe they are
trying to prevent the commercial use of public lands without the
appropriate permits. Not sure, really.

The weather was fantastic! Highs in the upper 70s or mid 80s depending on
the day and elevation. Low temps in the 50s. Had a great lightning storm
in the Chiricahuas on my last night there with thunder reverberating
throughout the canyon and only a little rain to keep the night cool. Winds
were persistent, but not too bad-- mostly out of the east and southeast
which actually gave me some assistance up the worst of the hills.

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-15 Thread Garth

As for durability of the shifters, if they are as good as the original they
should be great. I still use the original ST thumbies that came with my '83
Stumpjumper on one bike and another pair on the Bombadil, they both work as
great as great can be. I agree with Grant that you gotta wonder why any
other kind of shifter was ever made, other than to be "other than".

Sure, you can take them apart but there is nothing to do in there anyways.
So I don't see how not being user dismantled is an issue.I hope the new
ones still have the on-the-fly-no-screwdriver-needed adjustment screw on
top though.

The band on the original was one "weak" spot though, as with age and many
times being adjusted and all, I have had 2 clamps break(the ends).
Fortunately, I found some replacements on ebay yeh, you didn't know
they existed until there they are, staring you in the face, Swt .

I look forward to the Riv ones because well, I can never have enough bikes
to put them on :)

FWIW, I have shifted the same way since I first had a bike the could be
shifted manually, it was a Fuji-something 10 speed that I bought from a
doctor in the late 70's. Later on, I worked in a bike shop assembling and
repairing bikes when the whole indexed thing was becoming big. As I test
rode the new bikes, I thought "indexed shifting, hmmm, okay, but I already
know how to shift". So that was the end of that . hey, the feel, sound
and motion of shifting is as beautiful as any other art .

Re: [RBW] Commuting reflections and portfolio

2016-10-15 Thread WETH
Patrick,
As usual, I agree with Sheldon Brown!
I do love the Art Deco style of the Chancery. My commute concludes at one of
the schools on the grounds of the National Cathedral. I begin near Wheaton,
MD. Cycling infrastructure has improved greatly since the 1980s, but not along
Wisconsin Avenue where I ride. The hours I commute allow me to take the curb
lane, free of parked cars, and only play dodge-em with the metro buses. Most
drivers avoid traveling in the curb lanes I've found, and most bus drivers are
considerate. Connecticut Avenue north of the district line presents the most
challenge.
Enjoy your dirt road adventure to and from the store.
All the best,
Erl

Re: [RBW] Commuting reflections and portfolio

2016-10-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Eloquent. As Sheldon Brown said, commuting cyclists are the really
*serious* cyclists,
and cycle commuting makes what would otherwise be a very annoying chore
into a mini adventure -- at least, I find that so.

I see your route takes you by the Washington National Cathedral. 30 years
ago I lived in the Chancery apartments just catty corner across the street
from the cathedral. What are your termini a quo and ad quem? (Starting and
end points?) I never bike commuted in the district, but I did ride in it,
and I hope the infrastructure for cyclists is better now than it was in say
1986. I gather from your route description and photos that it is.

And, nice bikes. The Cheviot has the most elegantly wrapped chainstay and
kickstand I've ever seen.

Patrick Moore, about to turn a grocery store trip into a mini minor dirt
road cycling adventure in pleasantly Fall ABQ, NM.

Re: [RBW] Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-15 Thread Conway Bennett
G,

Have you solved the wimpy plastic washer issue? Maybe a thick hard rubber? I
remember there were two types of action figures growing up: brittle Gi joes
who's thumbs broke off and these heartier more maliable super heroes with a
similar but durable Kung fu grip. I don't know why silvers 1s trigger this
memory but that's where my mind goes. In any case, I learned my lesson and
stocked up as I have silver 1s on noodles and cycle thru them and chalk it up
to regular maintenance.

Re: [RBW] Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-15 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
The band mated with the chunk and limited it to 22.2 bars, which was fine
back then. It's fiddly to remove and remount (not t fiddly, but you
have to remove the lever and go at it with an 8mm socket). NewSilver2 has
some sort of curly flower thing going on 360-degrees, which lets you angle
the cable ideally for any orientation.
Not saying "perfectomundo" here---just saying we've gone about it slowly
and conscientiously and have rejected at least two "final" versions when we
found a way to either fix them or improve on something that didn't need an
actual fix.

I debated internally (didn't leave my personal skull) whether or not to
make the door to the pawl and spring user serviceable, but in a flareup of
sanity that might sound disrespectbul, I said No. If or when the mech wears
out, sell one of your cats and get a new one, Bubba...and in the meantime,
the rivet will stop most people from digging into something that's best
left alone.

It's really a good feeling to see the enthusiasm for this shifter. It is
really, still, amazing to me that

(1) all shifters aren't like this, and
(2) since they aren't, since it's such a push-button age when perfect
performance with no learning is the norm, that we can sell them at all!

What a strange group you are. In a fantastic way!

[RBW] WTB: Ritchey LOGIC non-drive 170mm crank arm (silver)

2016-10-15 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, All:

I'm looking for a left side LOGIC crank arm, 170mm silver in good shape.
The generation with the sort of 'soft arrow' shape at the top and LOGIC on
the flatish arm.

I'd be interested if you have one. Thanks so much for looking.

[RBW] Commuting reflections and portfolio

2016-10-15 Thread WETH

As I spend a beautiful weekend indoors nursing an irritated sciatic nerve, I
thought I'd write about my bike commute. My commuting route winds through
sleepy Washington DC suburban neighborhoods, down hill along a stream, across a
regional park and creek, up hill under an eight lane intestate highway, along a
major commuter artery where vehicles travel 40 miles per hour, through quiet
urban neighborhoods, and finally, 8 miles from home, onto the grounds of the
worlds 6th largest cathedral. Departing the house about 6:15am, I cycle in the
cool predawn air, passing a few joggers and mostly dark homes. After two and
half miles of peaceful suburban roads, I join a steady stream of cars. The
constant whine and hum of traffic quickens my pace. Three miles later I slip
onto quiet neighborhood streets as the sky brightens. Back on a six lane urban
road the cathedral beckons in the distance. I arrive invigorated for the day!
At 5:30pm, I reverse the route as I exercise away the days frustrations and
mistakes. The final two and a half miles to my house wind along a creek where
the roar of traffic grows fainter and dusk settles in as I give thanks for the
day as I spin contentedly toward home.

Since early April, I have made this ride exclusively on my rehabilitated
Romulus with albatross bars and a small Saddlesack. Nimble, quick and
comfortable, this bike is an extension of my body such that I feel I am in it
rather than riding on it. The shorter wheelbase and uptight riding position
puts me over the rear 35mm tire so I feel the road the way I would in a sports
car-a bit rough but in command.

I greet runners, walkers, and cyclists while marveling at how many respond in
the morning and how relatively few I encounter in the evening. Kindred souls
take to the road in the morning darkness.* I marvel at the politeness and
courteousness of most drivers. I wave a hand in thanks much more often than I
glare or gesture at an inattentive or aggressive driver. I try to put Mildred
Norman's words into action: "But, you see, I love people and I see the good in
them. And you're apt to reach what you see. The world is like a mirror: If you
smile at it, it smiles at you. I love to smile, and so in general, I definitely
receive smiles in return."

Fall's chill is creeping in, and I must layer more clothes. Soon I will be
carrying my work clothes while cycling in winter gear and changing at work.
To that end the Cheviot is built with rack and large Saddlesack, ready to take
over as my daily commuter until spring. The Romulus will get cleaned and
tuned-up to be ready for weekend adventures.

I placed my favorite photos from my 2016 Romulus commutes in a folder:
https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157674823367155 I will add more
as they occur.

The Cheviot is ready, and I look forward to the beauty of fall and winter
mornings. Cheviot photos here:

Safe cycling wishes to all,

I had bar-cons on my Cross Check, it was leaned against the car and the wind
blew it over. The rear shifter never worked after that.

[RBW] Ride Report-- Mini tour of SW New Mexico and SE Arizona

2016-10-15 Thread WETH
John,
Congratulations! What a great tour. Your photos are wonderful. That is my
favorite area of the country. Some day the opportunity to cycle through there
will present itself. In the meantime, your photos and writ-up will suffice.
How were the temperatures?
Again, well done.

Keep an eye out for my son's green version, here on the GAP Trail just north of

So cool! Wish they had "the band." I'm sure the new clamp is 28% better,
but holy cow was that hidden bolt band slick. Always seemed like the
closest thing I owned to constructeur. I wonder if the deuce will have the
same 3 point lever orientation option.

Who cares, though, so happy they're back!
