Re: [RBW] Re: My Debate

2017-02-11 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Hi Rich,

I'm attempting to compile a list of RBW/iBob riders in the area.

I don't yet have a Riv, but I have a stable of steel bikes, Bridgestone,
Trek and Bianchi.

Do you know Tony Scott? He just got a beautiful Terra Firma.

Cheers,

2017-02-11 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Jennings,

I lost track of your email address. My riding has been sporadic. About to
start on knee physical therapy again, so hopefully back up to speed in a
few weeks.

Did a shortish 20 milers out near Milton couple of weeks ago. Traffic keeps
getting heavier and now a developer is doing another big expanse on
Providence west of Bham Hwy.

What is your email? I can't recall how to make it show on on here.

Jock Dewey is in Athens and he wants to do some rides, too, as does Rich in
Decatur.

Cheers,'

[RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-11 Thread Joe Bernard
The thought crossed my mind when I saw the post. My personal decision was to
buy a different pedal from the one Riv sells (I bought those pedals from Riv a
couple weeks ago), which is something I had already discussed wanting to do
recently. I also suggested Grant might like the super-cheap pedals VP makes,
thinking he may want to carry them.

So I'm not really weighing in on whether the OP was kosher or not, just
explaining I handled the dilemma personally.

Just my thought- nothing more. Hard to express as gently as intended, over

[RBW] Re: Identifying a potential 'Rivendell'

2017-02-11 Thread Ian A
Considering the British bits on it and the lack of cable guides for routing
the rear brake cable, I'd guess it was likely from the 1970's, possibly
brought over from the UK. Hard to guess the quality of the bike, but the
lugs are quite plain, so possibly not considered high end in its day.
Might ride well, which would be the main thing.

[RBW] real cyclists ride steel

I wasn't on a Riv today, although this bike has some Silver brand bits, and the
current setup is definitely riv inspired. At a store stop, another bike group
pulled in, and they too were fans of steel bikes.

[RBW] Delightful Differences

2017-02-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
It’s been warm enough to melt the snow and ice from even the shadiest of places
on my back route to Woodland Park, so I’ve ridden the Quickbeam a few times the
last few rides. I love the delight of two completely different frames with
nearly identical saddle, pedal, handlebar set up, and engine (grin) riding a
five mile stretch of very familiar and very varied trail and road.

The gift of getting to delight in the two delightfully different and
wonderfully similar rides is amazing. 38mm plush Compass tires v. 2.1” plush
Racing Ralphs, are surprisingly similar to each other yet with a noticeable
smoothness on asphalt and roughness on corrugated trail to the Barlow’s v. the
Schwalbe’s.

The Quickbeam is lively and barely contained, eager to leap forward, and if I’m
not mistaken has the illusive mystical plaining of spritely frames. It compels
me to ride wildly and simply with a flowing confidence. The Hunqapillar is
deliberate and sure, powerful and solid with a rumbling confidence that no
matter the load or the trail or road, we will get through it with wild abandon
and delight on the way.

With abandon,
Patrick, living where we expect another batch of snow, though not so cold as
it’s been

[RBW] Re: Snowy Ride Report

2017-02-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Awesome, Michael! I love how snow rides are vastly different from any other
rides. Dampened sounds, dampened steering, harder pedaling. Drivers are far
more aware (even if they don't have control of their vehicles -- perhaps
because they don't!) and because of this always see me (whether thy can
avoid me is a different question entirely! Sardonic grin) -- so my plan is
to always be in a position to go where they won't/can't, sometimes easier
said than done).

What a different experience riding in NY vs any of the riding I do. It was
fun to vicariously ride along with you. Thanks!

With abandon,

I come down pretty solidly on the "no way" side.

Quickest bit of data would be the lugs - those are highly pointed "can
opener" lugs which GP always eschewed.

You should do some comparisons to this page:

And then roll through the Rambouillets here:
