[RBW] FS: Brooks Cambium C17 in Rust

2017-02-19 Thread Dennis Hogan
Hi all,

I have a gently used Brooks Cambium C17 in Rust. There are a few marks and
wear spots - see the link to the pictures: https://flic.kr/ps/26Rmjy
(hope this works - can send pics directly if needed)

I estimate I have about 2000 miles on it. It was on my A. Homer Hilsen. I
loved the way it felt but have switched to the carved version and love that
even more.

Asking $90 which includes shipping to the lower forty-eight. PayPal friends
and family preferred.

The pictures show it a little darker than in real life. You'll notice the
lighter smudges on the left side of the saddle and around a couple rivets
where I tried to clean it and also a little freying of the edges on the
rear end.

Re: [RBW] New tires for the Hunq

2017-02-19 Thread Reed Kennedy
My Hunq is currently wearing these:
http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/mtb-reviews/schwalbe-big-one-2016

Which are available for CHEAP here:
http://www.jensonusa.com/Schwalbe-Big-One-29-Tire

I happily paid well over twice that for mine. I've got them set up
tubeless, and I'd say they're not quite as supple as a non-EL Compass tire,
but pretty close. (Butt-dyno, no data to back it up.)

If you want big, plush, supple, no knobs, I say give these a try! I'll be
replacing them with the same unless Compass comes out with a puffier 700C
offering.

Bingo - those are exactly what you want. Make sure you get the
liteskins: https://www.schwalbe.com/en/offroad-reader/thunder-burt.html

P.S. if you go tubeless, you won't get (m)any flats, and they roll even
better/softer!

Re: [RBW] New tires for the Hunq

2017-02-19 Thread Patrick Moore
FWiW, I like the 700C X 50 mm Schwalbe Furious Fed for combined pavement
and sandy dirt riding. The FFs are sub-Compass-EL membrane thin (360
Pelouze mail scale grams per tire), but have tiny knoblets on the tread
and, more to the point, bigger knobs on the edges for cornering, and I
think these help traction on sand.

It's hard to parse all the factors -- surface, knobs/knoblets, crank arm
length, riding position; and I've not used the wider Compass tires; but by
a seat of the pants evaluation, I'd have to say that the FFs are very much
worth considering if your riding combines a good portion of pavement as
well as dirt.

I find myself riding a tooth smaller in back than I would expect, with the
FFs; OTOH, the cranks on the FF-shod Matthews are 175 mm, and not the 170 I
prefer on my road bikes.

[RBW] New tires for the Hunq

2017-02-19 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm looking to put some new rubber on the Hunq. I'll be taking it this summer
to the Walnut Creek area, then to Moab, then Boulder. Currently I'm riding
Schwalbe Smart Sams. At Deacon Patrick's recommendation I'm strongly
considering Racing Ralphs. But here's the thing, I don't really ride in mud. In
fact, most of the time, I ride the Hunq on pavement, but want to use it more on
dirt and gravel. I might ride it on some singletrack (which is what I
originally envisioned when I bought it but I've only used it for that about
5-10%, at the most). So, I think I'd like something much more supple, but still
fat. From what I've read from Jan (and I know that his research will probably
skewed somewhat toward what he likes and sells, but it still makes sense)
knobbies are really only helpful in mud, or certain snow conditions. Having
fallen in love with Compass EL on all my bikes but the Hunq, I want a tire that
will be comparable. It seems like the Comapss Snoqualmie Pass at 700x44 might
not be quite fat enough for the Hunq. So, thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2017-02-19 Thread René Sterental
I've ordered a set of custom wheels from Rich, White Industries 40 spokes
F/R in silver and the tandem Silver crankset RBW offered a while back. Have
a set of Mini-Motos that I had ordered to test but never installed. The
rest is TBD. No fenders so I can put it on a roof rack as it will be for
fair weather riding assuming I can slowly get my wife to enjoy it.

No idea yet about shifters or handlebars, but it'll be for upright riding.
Have several I'll test to see what I like best.

No idea about tires yet either. Haven't done any research yet.

I do have a B67 and B67S Select saddles, so let's hope my wife likes hers.
Otherwise, they won't match! ;-)

Decided in the orange frame as I don't have any bike that color. Hope it's
bright and shinny, as the first test wasn't approved.

Now have to figure how to store it... and if another bike will leave.

Helpful, thank you all. In case my wife joins me, a big 2-person sounds right,
although she wants to just meet me there with the camper :) Wanted a Hilleberg
(seemed like the Rivendell of tents) but taking good advice to start cheap. Eye
on a Eureka Spitfire - under $200, long and tall, not too heavy.

Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
Mark,

I've experienced a vast difference between hand build wheels and "stock"
(Velocity, in my case). I destroyed my rear rim at 30mph on a curvy
descent, snapping several spokes. Since then, on hand built (including
Rich's) I've hit worse with more weight or lighter rims (on the QB) and
nothing even out of true. There really is something to the craft of a
handmade wheel yielding far more wear.

Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?

Sometimes a pinched rim could be repaired using one of these
http://t.harborfreight.com/6-inch-jaw-straight-sheet-metal-seamer-98728.html?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F
and a sanding block afterwards. Do not try it with regular pliers; they got to
have long straight jaws so they are guided by the undamaged rim flange. Done it
with Velocity DV after a similar encounter with a pothole like the one you
described. Both of the flanges were severely creased from the impact.

[RBW] Re: Your S24O tent recommendation

2017-02-19 Thread Surlyprof
Ben,

I haven't ventured into S240 world yet but used to backpack a great deal.
I use a 2 lb. 2-person Marmot (or as my wife likes to call it a
one-person, one-dog, I'm sleeping in the car tent) that is fairly similar
to the Big Agnes that many are suggesting. Having a little headroom is
nice over a bivy. A couple of other key features that I looked for, based
on past experience, is the bathtub bottom with no seams until you are 3-4"
off the ground. Helps keep life a little dryer. The other thing I found
helped were tents that had pole straps that not only tightened up nicely
but had a buckle that split the webbing in two parts. Any moisture wants
to wick up the webbing to the tent. The buckle in the middle of the strap
keeps that from happening. Didn't know it would be such a nice feature
until I started using it. I also found that the mesh mattered. I've had
tents where the mesh actually obscured the view at night. The Marmot has a
darker purple mesh that is almost completely transparent when star-gazing
at night. That was an incredible upgrade after the previous tents.

If you are interested in saving some money, REI's online garage is good but
their garage sales are even better. We bought a larger tent for car
camping from an REI Garage sale. They run them every couple of months to
get rid of returned merchandise. Go early, read the tags carefully (in
case it says "ripped") and have a list of tents you are looking for before
walking in the door. We had a list of 4 tents we'd be happy with and found
the 1st and 3rd on our list. Got our top choice for about $60-70 for a
$400 tent.

Good luck!
John
