Keith,
No problem. Just eyeballing it with fenders/rack installed using calipers it
looks like about 20mm clearance at the fork and also brake bridge. About 28mm
or so at the chainstay fender mount.

AWESOME bike! Your gonna love it! Worth every penny of the price you paid for
it IMHO. I find the second hand market on Rivs kinda strange price wise, seems
like it brings all the skinflint types out, at least has been my experience
when trying to sell a used Rivendell. But back the bike congrats and I
totally agree your size great condition worth it!

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar 650B impressions

2017-02-21 Thread twowheeledtexan
Also, I forgot to mention the seat post troubles I had. I assumed it took a
27.2, but that didn't fit, so I inserted a 26.8 and went riding. After a 40
miler I noticed my saddle had dropped several cms. I readjusted and went off
again. During a 50 miler consisting of half gravel and single track, I could
barely ride 10 mins without having to stop and raise the saddle. After 1.5 hrs
of that I was steamed, and when we stopped for lunch I called Rivendell. I
vented my frustrations to an unsuspecting Will, who calmly explained that some
of the frames had been reamed to a different diameter and mine probably needed
a 27.0 post. Will said he was sending me a new Nitto post and some additional
binder bolts free of charge. Well that shut me up real quick, and although
irritated I was grateful for the customer service. The 27.0 post fit like a
charm and I replaced the binder bolt since I broke the original one trying to
tighten it down too much.

Moral, if you buy one of these have Rivendell double check the seat tube, and
also be appreciative of a small shop that does their best to take care of us.

I called Will a couple weeks later to thank him, he acted like it was no big
deal, but it meant a lot to me and I expressed that.

Thanks much. I was just going to clarify my question, but it might be tough to
answer anyway, with fenders in place. The thing i'm most curious about is the
vertical clearance between tire tread and bottom of crown. On the 700c/29er
hunqapillar forks, that dimension is oddly the limiting one, in terms of how
big a tire can be fit (at least with frnders). Almost like the fork blades are
maxed out and couldn't be made any longer. Was wondering if, by going to 650b,
they were able to get a little more wiggle room.

[RBW] Re: Tires for HHH tandem

2017-02-21 Thread Ray Varella
Tandems have some ratty significant advantages over singles in terms of
headwinds, crosswinds, downhills and general cruising.
A sturdier tire will not handicap general riding, especially on the
cruiser/bomber type tandem the HHH will be.

The tandem I've owned for many years has both a caliper and a drum brake,
making fixing rear flats a fair amount more of a hassle than on a typical
single.

Personally, I would opt for a 55-60mm tirefrom a company like Schwalbe over a
Compass tire.
I definitely would avoid the extra light casing compass tires for just about
any tandem.
I think you are entering the territory of diminishing returns. Ask any stoker
how much they feel bumps on the rear of the tandem.
They are just subjected to significantly higher loads than a sporty single.

Even on old Schwinn cruiser tandems with stock Schwinn cruiser tires, you could
really get moving with two very average riders.

My humble opinion would suggest a tire more in line with the design of the HHH.

I picked up my tandem wheelset today. I have a set of Pacenti Quasi Moto

my 650B bikes today. I'm going to use those for starters.

[RBW] Re: Shipping

2017-02-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
I don't think that is ebay offering you expedited shipping for $300.
That's a particular seller setting his own shipping policies. Him setting
expedited shipping arbitrarily high is his way to get you to take his
standard shipping. He probably forgot how to remove shipping options.
Anyway that $16 price makes Rivendells $10 price look pretty good. I get
it that you have to choose $16 shipped over $19 shipped, but if you could
have pulled together an order that gets you free shipping from Rivendell,
their pricing on many small parts are pretty darn good.

Re: [RBW] Re: Shipping

Reminds me of my most memorable eBay auction win.

That was for a yellow 1993 Bridgestone RB-1. And the seller lived two blocks
away from me in Brooklyn (although we had never met).

So, about 15 minutes after the auction ended - early evening - the seller came
over to my apartment with the bike.

Free shipping too!

[RBW] Tires for HHH tandem

2017-02-21 Thread René Sterental
Since today I paid for my tandem wheel set that Rich built, I've started
thinking about tires for the tandem. Being a Compass tires fan, their best
option is the 650b 48mm Switchback Hill.

I wonder if tires for a tandem have some specific requirements vs. tires
for a regular bike that I'm not aware of. There would also be the
consideration of the casing, standard vs. extra-light. All my Compass tires
are extra-light and I just love them.

Any suggestions, feedback or insights?

This will be my first tandem ever.

[RBW] Re: Grant's Other Book

2017-02-21 Thread George Schick
IIRC from my undergrad days, the thing that pushed Skinner into the
background, regardless of his brilliance with operant conditioning, was
it's application to humans in the 1971 publication, "Beyond Freedom and
Dignity." HIs critical view of the "autonomous man" and the ambiguous way
people are given credits for their achievements hit the bricks just as
Western culture was beginning to champion "rugged individualism" and
praising any human activity no matter how well or poorly they might be
done. He flew in the face of these things in a heavy handed kind of way
causing much of his great work to be considered second rate by the
prevailing philosophies. A shame in many ways; much of what is badly done
in our educational system, etc. could have been avoided had we followed his
direction.

We're on the same page, Valerie, I like pedaling and I ride for fun. The
exercise is good, too, but I came to bicycles from being a car/motorcycle guy,
and have always been into it as much for the mechanical aspect of bikes as for
the riding itself (I taught myself how to work on them).

My kitted Appaloosa is low-power/low-weight, and a good portion of those rides
is spent without using the button. My new - and very off topic! - mid-drive
ebike is a pedelec like your setup, where you pedal with varying levels of
assist.. there's no throttle you can stab and just sail down the road like a
scooter. I prefer this "still a bicycle" style.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell e-bike (conversion)

2017-02-21 Thread Valerie Yates
Thanks for the welcome Joe. Since I do really like pedaling, my main
hesitation was that it would feel like cheating. But I rationalize it by
reminding myself that I ride for pleasure not for exercise. This is
definitely a pleasure. I did wonder if it would ever arrive. It took
exactly 3 years. I sent a few email inquiries over the years and they kept
assuring me I would have one eventually. A benefit of ordering early was
that it was substantially less expensive than it is now. I still think it
is worth it at the current price. It provides a really nice assist.

[RBW] Re: Grant's Other Book

2017-02-21 Thread Ray Varella
Hmmm, perhaps years ago when the book was written, Skinner may have been
misunderstood but in today's world he is widely regarded (relatively speaking)
as bringing the practice of operant conditioning to the mainstream practice of
working with animals and people with extreme learning disabilities.

You can thank two of his phd students for that.
Keller and Marion Breland left their studies to open ABE which trained
thousands of animals for all sorts of work. If you ever saw a dancing chicken
at a fair or a pig in a Purina commercial, it was likely trained at ABE.
Bob Bailey was an employee of theirs and later married Marion after Keller
passed. Bob Bailey still speaks publicly on occasion and is well worth seeing
if you get the opportunity. He worked for the military prior to joining ABE and
worked marine mammals, birds etc... prior to the development of guided misses
they trained pigeons to peck at a screen to keep missles on course, Ravens to
fly into buildings to steal top secret papers, dolphins to place electronic
jamming devices on enemy ships and much more.
Marion eventually returned to her studies and went on to apply their training
principles to children with autism as well as other disorders.

Until I just read that Skinner was misunderstood, it never crossed my mind,
then again, I've read some of his work but never encountered much in the way of
hearsay.

No matter how cognizant you are of the tenets of operant conditioning, Pavlov
is always on your shoulder.

[RBW] Quickbeam chainline w/ PW freewheel?

2017-02-21 Thread Wally Estrella
Hi Folks:

I've seen numerous pictures of QBs with Phil Wood hubs on them, but can't
recall if it was fixed or freewheel. From what I understand the fixed side
of the PW track hub is 42. The freewheel hub is 46.

Is 46 chainline on a QB an issue from dropout to BB/chain stay clearances?
I'm using a single ring up front @ 40t ring and thinking of upping it to a
44 w/ a new PW freewheel on the rear.

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-21 Thread Jim Bronson
It looks like a really nice day. The last time I wore a tire down to the
casing, I got a flat and I was on a 200K far from anywhere with weather in
the mid-30s and drizzle. I had a spare LoupLoup Pass tire in my bag, but
still, having to take off my lobster gloves to change it in the cold
drizzle was pretty miserable.

The moral of this story is to check your tires frequently. It's not always
going to be a nice day when it fails.

[RBW] Re: Grant's Other Book

2017-02-21 Thread Jim M.
I bought those books when I first moved to Oakland in 1989. They were a
great resource and I've ridden pretty much every road in them. You can find
used copies on Amazon for $.01 + $3.95 shipping. Still a good source for
rides, though the pigs are long gone from Pig Farm Hill.

Ryan! Have we gotten to see photos of your bike all built up? How dreamy -
don't deny us this pleasure for long. Do let's hear all about it when you get
riding. You said it's glorious and splendid - would love to hear more about
what makes it so. Meanwhile, I'm going to let this idea of a second mixte

Also, I wonder who got version 1.0? Lucky duck.

Thanks Alex, yeah my wife's medium Clementine is going to get a tryout
with the Yepp very soon, it might be the happy compromise. My Saluki and
Bombadil are just about the same TT length as the XO3 so I don't think they
are of much use in the knee situation. Going up higher would also work
though, I'll have to take a look at that even on the XO as I'm sure I could
tolerate the bars a bit higher.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell e-bike (conversion)

2017-02-21 Thread Valerie Yates
I have the Roscoe with a Copenhagen Wheel
that was featured in the
blahg recently. It is fantastic. I wasn't really sure I wanted an e-bike
but I had ordered the wheel a few years ago pre-production because it
sounded like a cool idea. When it finally arrived, I didn't have a frame to
put it on but the Red Roscoe frame looked perfect. I sent the wheel to
Walnut Creek and they put this together
for me. I
have since changed the saddle and pedals to some I bought on this list
(thanks Richard!) and also added a Wald medium basket in front and I have
grocery baskets in back as needed.

I love it. It is a fantastic combination. It is so much fun to ride -
extremely intuitive and natural. I love that there aren't any battery backs
or wires visible except what you see in the giant hub on the wheel. I've
been inventing reasons I need to go run a quick errand by bike. The best
part is that when you start off, you just go. It eliminates the few rounds
of work to get the bike up to cruising speed. There are 3 levels of
assistance: turbo, standard, and eco, that govern how much assist you get
and also how long your battery will last. Standard is only about 30 miles.
With eco, they say you might get up to 39. I have been mostly riding in
standard mode because I live in a hilly neighborhood. Having the boost
means any road feels flat. You can recharge the battery a little with the
regenerative braking feature, which is actually fun to use when cruising to
a stop. It also has an exercise mode if you prefer resistance. I would
think that just having the wheel turned off would count as exercise since
the wheel is 22 pounds. I suppose that, once it is moving, perhaps the
momentum would cancel that out. I haven't really tried it much without
power. I keep thinking I should but then I turn it back on because it is
really fun with it on and I am not a scientist.

I would highly recommend the Copenhagen Wheel to anyone thinking they might
enjoy some electric assistance and if its somewhat limited stats work for
your needs. It comes in a small variety of wheel sizes and types. It is
expensive but the add-on kits I've seen are pretty pricey too. Because the
wheel is so heavy, I think it makes sense to have a geared bike to
accommodate pedaling without power if needed. Also, it is not really meant
for rain, puddles, or rough terrain.

I also really love the Roscoe. Such a great deal for a frame. The Roscie
decals and head badge make me smile like a kid. And it has lift-a-tube.
Even without the C-wheel, I expect I will love this bike. With normal
wheels, I imagine it would ride like my Appaloosa -- a bike that sails
comfortably through whatever it encounters. The Roscoe seems like it might
be a bit lighter and maybe stiffer but that could just be based on how I
have them set up. And that could just be my imagination. Whatever it is, it
feels terrific.

In addition to selling (only) Bob Dylan LPs, maybe we need to add B.F.
Skinner to our Lending Library.

[RBW] Re: Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2017-02-21 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Ha, lookin' good Tony! I was initially trying to make my Schwinn High
Plains a dedicated "dad bike" via the Yepp mini. Turns out I had the same
issue as you (knee knocker). Riv bikes and they're tall headtubes make
great candidates for the Yepp Mini because everything gets shifted UP UP UP.

[RBW] Re: Wanted: Front Bag

2017-02-21 Thread Pondero
Eric, I am embarrassed to say that I accidentally issued a false alarm (and
sent you a PM on this also). When I went to retrieve it this morning for
photos, I soon realized my mistake. I had done a major "clear out" of
things a couple of months back and had forgotten that my bag was one of
those items. So my bag is gone, and I hope you can find one even better
for your project!

[RBW] Re: Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2017-02-21 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Successful first ride, just around the block really but the Yepp Mini
mounted up to my newly-Albatross'd XO-3 and even though Rebecca isn't a big
fan of the helmet she tolerated it and seemed to enjoy the sensation. With
weather like we're getting right now we'll get in some riding early this
year. Thanks for all the info in this thread!

First impressions from riding with the Yepp are that at least for me it's a
slight knee knocker, I'm going to try mounting a seat that can be set back
a bit which will still be ok with the Alba bars. I got used to it pretty
quick but for a longer trip I'd like another inch of clearance.
