[RBW] Rivendell tandem builds

2017-03-06 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Can't wait to see the builds. Every time I read about the HHH I have to remind
myself that my Burley tandem is more than sufficient for the limited tandem
riding my wife and I do... But it's still tempting especially the promise of
fat tires...

I'm going to swap out the current mustache bars for a Jones Loop this season as
well as I'm wanting to mount the front kid seat and make it a 'triple'.

Besides all the technical differencesthere's a *deep* and *abiding*

Chris, the Karate Monkey has been described as a dirt Crit bike. It has
short chainstays and a short front end. The Jones Plus is really at the

I wrote up a review of the Jones Plus on the IBOB list a while back.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-06 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
I had to check out the red to see. Red seems to be new--like, the 650B
Hunqa sizes and the 65 Atlantis. That's another Venn diagram overlap
functional problem. If we had room and money we could have bikes in stock
all the time, all sizes and models -- kind of like what Surly's like, I
imagine--or any other big bike company. Our way is to break ourselves and
risk a lot on one run of bikes/frames after another, and hope for the best.
It's probably good for the models, because we don't commit to things we're
not fully behind, but it's bad in other ways---

[RBW] FS: Carradice Kendal Panniers (pair)

2017-03-06 Thread Will Ashe
Hello all,

I'm selling a barely used pair of Carradice Kendal panniers in the
green/honey colorway. I purchased these to use for short camping trips but
I've been so busy with work that I don't think they'll get any use.

These are perfect for a Nitto 27f as they are wider than they are tall, aka
"landscape orientation". I think $100 shipped CONUS is fair.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-06 Thread Wayne Naha
It's all about having the choice! Joe Appaloosa may cover the same
functional range of the Atlantis, but that's not the end of the story. The
Atlantis has a style and grace all it's own. The Appaloosa has it's own,
too, but different. And that's the choice. An embarrassment of riches,
perhaps. A good problem to have.

I have done all-dayers (~80 miles on mixed terrain) on albatross bars.
Enjoyment all the way - no issues whatsoever. Hoping to do a 100 mile day

I haven't used it for multi-day long rides (i.e. touring use).

[RBW] Re: RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
The other bike to compare with your RB-1 is the forthcoming Roadini. It's
intended to be functionally equivalent to the Roadeo, but it only costs
~$800. If you swapped over your entire RB-1 build kit to a Roadini, the
only new parts you'd need would be brake calipers and a 26.8mm seatpost.
Grant posted a pdf brochure of the frameset on the "Atlantis redundant?"
thread.

Bill: where is all this info and display about the Roadini? I did too look,
and I still can't find it.

How does the Roadini compare with the Roadeo:

Tubing?
Geometry?

At just more than 1/3 of the Roadeo, it won't look as nice, but then all
the Riv bikes I've seen, in person and in photo, look far better than many
of the bikes I've yearned for in the past. I'm sure that a $800 road frame
from Riv will look better than most on the road.

Patrick Moore inquired about the brochure. He doesn't (can't?) view this
google group on a web browser, so he doesn't have this entire thread
conveniently laid out before him.

Grant attached a pdf brochure to his post about 12 hours ago (Lob knows why
he was up so late). It had no geometry chart, but it did have a list of
nominal sizes and the PBH ranges for each. It says nothing specific about
tubing, except that it's heavier than Roadeo tubing. The brochure invites
us to email grant to register interest. I'm sure he'll send you a copy of
the pdf brochure if you are unable to see it as a determined email-only
viewer.

In case anyone missed it, registration is required, but it does not
gurantee parking space. see here,

Registration opens March 10 and is required but does not guarantee a

I'm also willing to sell these individually if you only want one or the
other. The only thing to be aware of is that the Acorn bag doesn't have the
seatpost strap. You can purchase the leather standoff directly from Acorn
if you like, or just use a John's Irish Strap.

I agree. The fact that it is a tig-welded bicycle is about the 87th thing I

Re: [RBW] RB-1 vs Rivendell

G. Petersen, from the radavist piece eight years ago: "*The Bstones were
good bikes, especially considering their competition. They were lugged and
steel, had classic looks and rode really well. They were excellent values

starting team here *[ie, Rivendell]."

Holy cow, build up that Rodeo and ride it instead of not letting go of
something you don't have! (But if yer gonna sell, you might do it soon, as
the Roadini rollout may dampen the NIB Rodeo market a wee bit.) The RB-1 is
not that hard to acquire, if you don't mind paying the iconic premium.

Thanks, Tony. One thing that strikes me is how not-out-of-place the
Clementine is, hanging with the Jones+ and its 3" rubber. And yet it looks
equally appropriate on a grocery run. Doesn't get much more versatile than
that!

[RBW] Re: How are some Appaloosa owners loading up their bikes for commuting?

I have a Clementine, similar long stays. If you go panniers, and don't need
to take them off each day when you secure the bike at work, I highly
recommend the Sackville back o bike bags. I just got back from a grocery

problem is my wife always likes my stuff better...but this is a thing that goes

[RBW] Re: RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-06 Thread cliftonjlong

Thanks again to everyone for all the useful perspectives! Andy's reply in
particular really speaks to what I'm wondering about. If a Rivendell
really feels like a higher quality bike and is less fatiguing (read more
enjoyable) over middle distances then that appeals to me a lot. As I get
older and more achy but still able and wanting to do 75 mile rides with
some regularity (thanks Advil!) comfort means a lot. I know prices for the
RB-1 peaked some time ago and even fairly priced, good condition examples
with up-graded components seem to languish on Ebay but I assume if I can
honestly say it's an NOS bike/build with one 20 mile shakedown ride I think
it would bring a better premium that if I did a couple of metric centuries
on it. Fortunately it's not nearly spring here in Vermont (was 1 degree
this am) so I have some more time to ponder. Now if I'd only started this
thread before that new 57 Roadeo frame sold on Ebay for $1500!

I've tried to attach a small picture as I have no photo site at the moment.

[RBW] FS: Various Shimano goodies - Dura Ace 7400, 600 Tri-color, and more

2017-03-06 Thread Mike K.
Some random parts I've collected the last few years that I need to get rid
of to help finance the Ram build. All prices include shipping CONUS.

Dura Ace FC-7402 - 172.5 arms, 53/42 rings. The 53 is pretty rugged (a few
chipped teeth etc, would definitely recommend getting a replacement) but
the 42 is looking good. - $80 OBO
- Overall in good shape. Logos are crisp. Some shoe rub on the drive arm.
Includes Dura Ace dust caps.

Shimano 600 Tri-color (6400 group), all in good shape
2 Rear Derailleurs - $30 each
1 set of shift levers - $30
1 rear brake (rear only!) - $15

Shimano Z Derailleurs - served me well for years on my commuter. Simple
friction set up. - $20 for the set
- Rear derailleur is long cage.
- Have run the Front Derailleur on a double crank and triple crank.

Braze-on Campagnolo Front Derailleur - I think it's NR, but honestly not
sure. Feel free to make an offer if you know which it is and are
interested. Came off a damaged Medici frame.

[RBW] Re: RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Interesting. I came across a thread the other day (or perhaps it was a
Resurrectio) in which J. Heine was saying chainstay length does not matter
much, at least in the parameters it normally varies by (he used wheelbase
total). He states that in general, any change that creates an effect must
be at least a 5% change. The RB1 --at least the 1989 version reviewed in
Bicycling--came with what the reviewer called a "longish" chainstay of
16.25", which is just over 41cm. I'm assuming the geometry du jour may have
called for 39-40cm. The Rodeo comes in 43 or 43.6. So, at 2cm, give or
take, not a lot of difference there, and Jan would say no affect on
handling characteristics. He does allow that outside of this range--lets
say 41-45--it may have an affect.

Certainly the most recent Rivendells are well into this 5% change
territory. I doubt there is much difference between 41.25 and 43, but I'm
also skeptical that 3-4cm doesn't make a difference. Partially because he
bases the 5% on overall wheelbase, not on chainstay length. (That's like
using the combination of saddle fore-aft position and stem length combined
to make a 5% change). Here is the passage, it was over on 650B:

*The idea that longer wheelbases change a bike's handling has been around
for a long time, and at first sight, it makes sense. However, as always, we
need to ask how much of a difference it really does make.*

*How long do the chainstays need to be to get a difference in handling?
Most bikes have a wheelbase of about 1000 - 1050 mm. To get a noticeable
effect, you usually need to make a change of at least 5%. So that would
mean 50 mm (5 cm) longer wheelbase. Yet the chainstay differences between
similar bikes are usually in the range of 15-25 mm.*

*From my own experience: Peter Weigle and I once rode one of his bikes and
and an Alex Singer, back to back. Both had identical geometries, tires,
loads, etc., except the Weigle had 20 mm longer chainstays (450 mm instead
of 430 mm). Peter and I rode the bikes before talking about it to avoid
influencing each other, and we each decided independently that they handled
identical, much to our surprise. (We also "knew" that longer stays make a
bike more stable.)*

*These were front-loading randonneur bikes, it is perhaps possible that a
heavy rear load is affected by chainstay length, because the distance
between load center and rear axle changes by more than 5%.*

[RBW] Re: FS: Various Shimano goodies - Dura Ace 7400, 600 Tri-color, and more

2017-03-06 Thread Mike K.
Now featuring Phil Wood!

One more thing to add to the For Sale category.

I have 123mm of smooth-spinning goodness, with thread rings and loctite,
plus the install tool.

Spins like the day it was made. Drive side mounting ring is pressed onto
the bb and I don't see a reason to pry it off. I bought it that way and
didn't have any trouble with it.

Asking $90 shipped CONUS priority mail

[RBW] Re: How are some Appaloosa owners loading up their bikes for commuting?

2017-03-06 Thread Ed Carolipio

I took a few minutes after coming home today to snap photos of my commute
setup on the Appaloosa and posted them on Google Drive.

 Frame
size is 51 cm so wheels are 650b. (For context, here's a link to my earlier
post

in this thread.)

A few notes:

   - On 1, the grey Ortlieb commuter bag tilts forward not to avoid heel
strike but due to the fit of the QL3.1 hardware on the 32R. (See 4)
   - On 2, don't let the red pannier fool you: that's mostly air and weighs
   less than 5 lbs.
   - On 3, that's a shot of the back side of the Back Roller on the rear
rack. Note how the rack clamps are separated evenly so the pannier is
centered on the rack front-to-rear. Also, it's mounted on the lower rail.
   - On 4, that's a shot of the rear rack with the Ortlieb commuter bag
removed. The black triangle thing is the QL3.1 hardware that stays behind
on the bike. Because the 32R has such a generous opening and I wanted the
option of running a small saddlesack, I had to run one side of the triangle
parallel to the rear vertical stay on the rack, which tilts the bag forward.
   - On 6, I shot a closeup of the ... ahem ... metal sculpting I did to
make the deck bar for the front rack go under the front cantis. A Mark's
front rack would be a cleaner and sturdier install. (That's a future
   upgrade for me.)
   - On 7, that's the underside of the front bag/basket to show how many
tie wraps I used to secure the two together
