[RBW] Re: Rosco Bubbe Mixte

2017-04-08 Thread Steve Butcher
Davey,

In all fairness, I did not ride the Clem-L more than perhaps around the
block. The way it was set up, the Clem felt nearly like riding a Gazelle
Dutch bike I once owned. In other words, very upright. My Rosco, though
still quite upright, gives me just the slightest amount of forward lean in
the setting. Also, as has been described about many Rivendell bikes, I
feel like I'm riding in the bike; instead of on it. The Rosco has a
definite plushness/springiness I enjoy, but is still quite responsive to my
inputs. I'm intrigued by the Rosco Mountain Mixte builds and would like to
hear more about riders impressions of them.

Re: [RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-08 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I think this is somewhat more intricate, with many subtle human motivations
lying between need and greed. Certainly few Americans live anything close
to strictly on need, and of those that do, many are not doing so
voluntarily. Our economy and our culture is just not set up that way. When
does want or appreciation or desire cross the line into greed? Is being a
hoarder greedy, or is some other driver at work? Staving off thoughts of
mortality, perhaps? What about collectors, or connoisseurs?

I suspect many of the n + 1s here are a slightly different breed than any
of these categories. We've become infatuated with the bicycle as one of the
more amazing, and more accessible, machines ever created, and enjoy
exploring it in its many permutations and variations. We are very lucky in
that respect, as the bicycle has only been in existence for the tiniest
sliver of human history. And the ability of the average citizen to buy,
store, and feed way more bicycles than he or she needs, and endlessly
discuss said bicycles on the internets, is due mainly to the high per
capita use of energy that we have been enjoying for the last century or so.
But, as all things do eventually, that high energy consumption, and the
many benefits that come with it, is winding down. That said, I think you
are right that too much of anything, including bicycles, can ultimately
impair contentment and gratitude, and I am doing my best to release some of
my bicycle fixation --and some of my bicycles. I just have one or two more
projects to go here...

Adam Leibow wins for my favorite stable.

I would love a lighthouse sequoia, Ramanceur, Hunqapillar and I also recommend
the BMC to the budget conscious. If I ever needed to liquidate I'd replace
everything with that monster cross. It's a killer bike for the price but you
sort of need to be in the know for it to be on your radar so it's got a little
bit of a paradox going on.

Fair winds,

Re: [RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-08 Thread Lee Legrand
When contentment is derived from having things or having less things, then
contentment is always regulated on external things being set. Which is
always have within it, discontentment since nothing external is set but
comes and goes. It is not so much as having bicycle N+1 bicycle but I
think it is more of need and opportunity. If people bought bicycles based
on what they used them for, instead of being fixated on fads and new gear,
it is not that they will have greater contentment but it bicycles are used
as needs as part of their life. If a person can do whatever they needed on
one bicycles vs someone needing 3 bicycles to do what they need for their
life, why is the person with 3 less content than the one who has one? They
are using the bicycle out of necessity.

[RBW] Sackville Saddlesack Large or Medium?

2017-04-08 Thread Broccoli Cog
I'm trying to decide which Sackville Saddlesack would be better for my Sam.
I now have a rear rack so either would work. I plan on using it for
commuting, running errands, and the occasional S24O. I have a Mark's rack
on the front with a Wald basket for some extra carrying space. My original
thought was to get the medium with the thought that it would be plenty big
enough for my needs. I am also leery about having this huge bag on my bike.
That said, I don't want to make such a large investment and be kicking
myself that I didn't get the bigger bag. Would appreciate any advice you
could share.

[RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-04-08 Thread Bill M.
Long time audio geek here, but not so much with the tubes and vinyl these
days. I my case, it's CD's ripped to a hard drive, streamed to a
Squeezebox, digits delivered to a 4-way digital crossover feeding multiple
amps, horn tweeters and high-efficiency woofers and a couple of subs.
Lately I've been exploring the headphone world and enjoying them quite a
bit more than I had in the past.

The comment about audio and bikes rings true with me, the folks I knew back
in my college years were into both. The third hobby in that cluster was
tropical fish. All of my aquaria are gone, no good place for one in my
current home.

[RBW] WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I'm looking to re-fork my XO-3 for easier 2" tire clearance and mid-fork
braze on's for rackage. I've got a 59cm XO-3 and the head tube is about
24cm so I'd need at least that, more would be fine or preferred on the
steerer tube. 26" wheel canti preferred as I want to run my Bruce Gordon
fancy canti brakes on this rig. I'd take any color, pretty much any usable
condition. Figure it's a long shot but maybe someone has one laying
around. PM me if you want to sell, I've got some interesting bits for
trade to if that is more up your alley.

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Sackville Saddlesack Large or Medium?

2017-04-08 Thread drew
Medium is really big. Large is extremely big.
The medium is bigger than carradice's biggest bag. I can fit sleeping bag,
tent, u-lock, multi-tool, a couple shirts and overnight toiletries in mine and
then strap the sleeping pad to the top. For me, it's too big for commuting or
general riding around, and too expensive to leave on all the time. It is
perfect for carrying a lot of stuff. I know people really like the large but I
can't imagine ever filling it up all the way.

Re: [RBW] WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-08 Thread James Warren

I hope this works for you, because it's already such a great, fun bike. It'll
be really cool to enhance it.

I got tremendous use out of my low price red XO-3, riding it to work and all
over back in 2000. I'm 6'4", but I made it work with the Riv bar at the time
shaped like Albatross but that couldn't take bar-end shifters. Great bike and
not TOO precious. Kinda perfect in that way. I'd leave it locked outside while
seeing a movie. I eventually gave it to a nephew and he spilled paint on it by
accident, but the ride is still great.

The 26" XO-3 is one of the best Bridgestones, and was probably underrated.
Clem-like, I think. (Except I doubt the Clem is underrated.) And it's lugged!

Re: [RBW] Sackville Saddlesack Large or Medium?

2017-04-08 Thread Nick Ybarra
Just a counterexample. I've got a large on my double top tube cant Sam,
and I love it. I use it for commuting every day as well as touring and
camping rides. I agree it's extremely big, but I like having the option of
filling it up and don't really see a significant downside to having more
room.

If it were me, I'd get a large and test it out for a bit. If you don't
like it, you probably won't have trouble reselling it or even trading it to
someone with a medium who wants more volume.

[RBW] WTT New Marks rack for old marks rack or Nitto R14

2017-04-08 Thread Philip Kim
I ordered the marks rack for rear rack use with the toplight rear Dynamo light.
This new version doesn't have a tab but brazeons on the side for headlights.

Looking to trade this for an old marks rack or R14 rack with the tab to mount
the rear b&m toplight dyno light.

The marks rack is brand new and hasn't seen any use

If no trade comes along I can sell this rack but prioritizing a trade.

2017-04-08 Thread Conway Bennett
The stock fork stinks and limits what you can do up forward. I did the same
sort of thing with my 59 xo-2 but actually used 58 cm hunq fork and dropped the
canti posts. I think I ended being into the fork for around $300 which is in
custom range.

Depending on what tires you run maybe start thinking about crimping the chain
stays. I haven't but I've thought about it.

newby: https://www.bestfountainpen.com/

It allowed me to gain some knowledge and set a bar for quality. Only later
did I go down the rabbit hole of youtube videos, magazines, and attendance
at the San Francisco Fountain Pen show which pretty much got me hooked on
vintage flex pens.

To bring this back to bicycles, two of my best friends/riding buddies are
also into pens (I think there is a bit of competition going on) and it has
been remarkable seeing how much the pen choices have paralleled our
interests in bikes in terms of who likes buying high end equipment that
requires little fuss (I'm raising my hand) and who likes to pull apart
their pens and tinker (the other two). When I reach for one of my pens I
want it to be ready to write even if I do know how to maintain them if I
need to do a little work.My friends get as much pleasure from tinkering
as they do writing it seems. We all love to share and try out new inks.

The second pen I bought after a Parker Sonnet was this Waterman and I think
as a go to workhorse pen it is hard to beat for under $100. I find myself
drawn back to it as my daily writer at work. Smooth and consistent. As in
all things, your preferences may differ as far as nib width, and intended
use, how it feels in your hand, etc. The Montblanc Shakespeare Writers
Edition

is my most decadent pen and it writes like a dream. Is it a better writer
than the Waterman? Yes, but only marginally so. As an English teacher and
lover of the Bard it was a special gift for myself and an instant heirloom.

Finally, I will make a small plug for looking at the vintage flex pen
options. They are unequivocally better than the modern attempts at making
a flexible nibbed pen and that's kind of sad because the people who crafted
these 100 year old nibs that flexed like a "wet noodle" are long gone. But
in terms of tactile writing experience there is simply no substitute. My
three vintage flex pens are my special occasion pens for penpal
correspondents and are just magical (if quirky) to write with.

Best to all,
Addison

[RBW] Will the Ocean Air Cycles Erlen Bag Support work w/ my Nitto seat post?

2017-04-08 Thread John
Hi everyone,

Is anyone using their Erlen bag support with either a Nitto S-83 or
the lugged Nitto S-84 seat post?

I'm looking at the cross piece on the bag support and wondering if there is
enough room for the support to fit if the full length of the S-83 saddle
clamp.

I see longer bolts are supplied with the Erlen to fit your seat post, but
the rails look a bit too short to me.

Any info you have would be appreciated!

Thanks,

John

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-04-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Addison, and good to know that my cheapo plastic pen is a decent
one; it certainly write nicely compared to ballpoints and #4 or even 2H
pencils! My hand doesn't cramp, and it forces me to write more slowly and
with a more relaxed hand. And, not least, my writing with it is almost
legible.

I'll look over the materials and consider the sub $100 Waterman. Thanks for
a good, concrete suggestion (I know it's not necessarily a
"recommendation").

That Mont Blanc! $1K for a pen! Or is it the $3.9K one? That's like paying,
what, $1000 for a bike! Crazy!

Thanks again.

[RBW] WTB: New or Used Compass Naches Pass (26″ x 1.8″) Tire

Hey Riv folk,

I realize this is a long shot, but no harm in trying ... If anyone has a
Compass 26″ x 1.8″ Naches Pass tire, or tires, they'd like to sell, I'm in
a buying mood! Can be new or used, 1 or more tires, but only interested in
the black sidewall version. Even a Naches Pass that's mostly used up would
be of interest, so I could test the fit and ride quality.

Marc40a,

Thanks for the heads-up on the water application technique. Super helpful!
I've had a roll of this in my bike toolbox for a decade+ and have used it
to great success in small applications, like spots on sides of the
head-tube where bar-end shifter housing rubs, but larger areas always ended
up oriented wrong or with a wrinkle that wouldn't come out. Can't wait to
give the water technique a try!

[RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'm partial to waxed canvas and love Sackville. But I switched to Frost
Rivers bag because it plays better with bikepacking with my tent, sleeping
bag and pad on the rear rack because it goes sideways. Love the large side
pockets too. Only downside so far is I had to add the draw chord to
tighten/loosen the draw flaps that weather proof the bag beneath the top
flap. Ought to come with that.
https://www.frostriver.com/shop/bike-bags/gunflint-trail-seat-bag/ I'm not
sure but I think the design is Grant's Baggins design and there was bad
blood there somehow, but whatever happened, the bag is great.

With abandon,

[RBW] Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread Philip Kim
All great choices! Sackville medium is nice if that's your only bag, it's
pretty big! It's pretty waterproof

Swift saddle bags are more audux type, a bit smaller. Not as waterproof

The carradice are the cheapest. The leather straps are much lower quality
compared to Sackville, and wear out pretty quickly, but it's also significantly
less. They are very water proof depending on the model.

I think the Sackville and swift are worth the extra money. Just a matter of
sizing and material preference.

Re: [RBW] Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't know the Swifts, but I've owned 2 Sackvilles and oh so many
Carradices.

BTW, I think that Carradices today are of lower quality than they were 20
or 25 years ago; those I owned from the '90s had leather that, while not as
pretty as Riv's, certainly never wore out on my watch. I've seen 20+ year
old Nelson Longflaps, green with age and mould, surviving innumerable
wettings, and the leather was as sturdy as new. I filled a early 1990s
Nelson with water and it leaked nothing at all.

But the great defect of the Nelson-type design is that the bags hang
mouth-downward, which makes them hard to load to full capacity. This
doesn't mean that contents are not secure; any number of times I've arrived
home after 10 or 15 or 20 miles to find the flap hanging unbuckled after
all those miles; and the same for the side pockets -- keys and wallet still
in possession despite miles of unbuckled flap.

Still, the Sackville design, which keeps the bottom flat or flattish, and
with a high lip, is much easier to load and, probably, even more secure.

But, although I've owned literally dozens of different saddlebags, I always
go back to panniers, which I find easier to load, much more adaptable to
the quantity to be carried, much easier on and off; and cheaper per unit
volume, by a small margin (REI has 40 liters' worth of a pair of Roller
Packers for $240 with member credit versus the admittedly much nicer
looking (for a while!) 32.5 liter (stuffed volume) Large Saddlesack at
$250).).

[RBW] Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread drew
The carradice and swift designs are similar, but I think the sackville design
is a highly improved one. The flat bottom and rear vs top opening system is
much easier to use, and keeps items in place better, in my opinion.

Another difference is size. Sackville medium will be a little larger than the
largest carradice and quite a bit bigger than the swift, making it work much
better on a rack or support. I have a couple carradices and a medium
saddlesack. The quality difference is not negligible. The sackville bags are
way nicer in qualityas with most rivendell stuff, almost too nice.

[RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread John
+1 (+2?) for both Swift & the Sackville saddlebags. I own a few of both and
love 'em.

One plus for the Swift bags over Sackvilles are the daisy chains and
D-rings for lashing gear & stuff to the outside of the bag.

The Sackville design optimizes use of the top of a back rack.

Another favorite are saddlebags made by Dill Pickle Gear: high quality bags
like Swift, but with more options & color choices.

Some aspects of it may be TMI, but others might fit perfectly with the

I never said someone with x bicycles is more or less content than someone
with x-y bicycles. I really doubt those of us who have more than, say, 2 or
3 bicycles actually *need* all of them. I do think that at some point,
rather than bringing pleasure or contentment, a big bicycle collection can
become a burden--whether financially, physically, or spiritually. What that
number is for any particular person, I would not pretend to have any idea.

Re: [RBW] Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-08 Thread Eric Daume
I had a Carradice Camper, but I really hated having to struggle with the
buckles every time I wanted to get in the bag (the traditional Carradice
bags use a belt buckle type arrangement on all the pockets). I switched to
a Super C with plastic buckles, and it's much easier to live with.

The Super C doesn't feel especially roomy, though.

I was looking for almost the same thing and couldn't find it. I bought an
ordinary Tange 26" fork from Bruce Gordon instead.

Perhaps a custom builder could do a run of these forks: 26", lugged, 2.4"
tire clearance, absurd number of braze-ons, a nice paint color. I'm not
going to say a ton of people would want this, but there's probably enough
