[RBW] Re: Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread Julian Westerhout
As long as the height of the steel locknut is the same, you'll have no
problems.

Did the LBS's not have 32mm headset wrenches for sale, or were they
actually bereft of them in their workshops as well? If the latter, do they
not service any older good bikes or newer cheaper bikes at all? Kind of
astounding, and sad.

Getting a proper wrench will allow you to correctly adjust the headset --
and an adjustable wrench on the locknut should be ok, and not dent the
alloy if snugged down. Either way, I'd get one -- worth having if you work
on your own bike.

[RBW] Re: The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Leah,
I agree RE: saddlesacks. Gray, olive, tan... looks right to me.

The SafireSack looks great. I have olive medium and tan large. I think I
can make room for a blue one (with the added bonus of zippered pouch
inside-- which for me is a nice addition to the otherwise wonderful bag).

Medium or Large ShopSack will fit in large wald. (Medium is dimensionally
perfect for medium Wald.) You'll probably be fine without strapping it onto
the basket. But there are plenty of places to clip the bag onto the basket
or cover it with a bungie cargo net.

I've used both medium and large ShopSacks as an airplane carry on. The
straps are a little tight for me to throw over my shoulder; my SO (who is
smaller than I) doesn't have that problem. One could clip a shoulder strap
for easier hoisting.

[RBW] The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
I ordered my Sapphire Medium Shopsack on Friday. There are only 8 left, so they
probably won't last through the week.

I think of olive and tan as "warms". Grey and Sapphire are "cools". If you've
got a bike with a cool colorway, it's nice to have a complementary bag. I've
got a bunch of olive and now a couple Sapphire so I have both covered

[RBW] Re: Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread Garth
I prefer steel not so much because al is softer, but getting a perfect
match between wrench and nut in really hard, it's hit or miss depending on
the tool and the nut tolerances. Steel gives you more leeway. I do use an
adjustable along with a 32mm wrench on my headsets, but it's not one that
is all loosey goosey when you adjust it to a bolt. I think it's a Stanley.
Even my 2 Park 32mm wrenches vary in tolerances from each other, one fits
some nuts better than the the other and vise versa. Bike tools are not even
close to being precise tools , this is why it's good to get them at a place
where you can either inspect/measure if beforehand or return it. Park has
a big rep but crappy quality control.

That no bicycle shop had a 32mm wrench pretty much disqualifies them as
being considered anything but a bike retailer, no better than Wal-Mart
even.

[RBW] Re: Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread Ash A
Folks,

thanks for sharing your opinions. To clarify, some of the LBSs did have
32mm wrench, but not for sale. They had 34, 36 and 40mm wrenches in stock.

The aluminum would be probably better for the life of the fork, as if at I
over tighten, there is no chance of damaging the fork.

I'm going to give it one try to find a good 32mm wrench and use aluminum.
If that too changes the shape of the nut I'll just swap it to steel.

Well thank goodness for that at least !

As for the nut Ash, as long as the nut screws on as it is supposed to: as
in *easy peasy*, the steering tube threads will always be fine regardless

Regarding overtightening: it's hard to overtighten a hs, IME, which is
extensive and comes with a compulsion to over torque things. Don't choose
the metal of your hs for this reason!

Patrick Moore, who has (blush, shuffle, shuffle) been known to fine-tune hs
bearing adjustment by cranking* the hell down!!* on the hs locknut.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2017-04-24 Thread Anne Paulson
I have ridden the Divide. I was glad of my 3" tires. I also lved my
hydraulic disk brakes.

The only problem with the hydraulic disk was bike shops along the route
didn't know how to maintain them. For that reason, last year I switched to
mechanical disk brakes-- and rapidly switched back. The difference was
astonishingly large.

I rode the first 2300 miles of the Divide. I got one flat along the way, a
nasty slash on a rocky downhill.

Someone in Mark's group had fenders. For the part of the route he rode,
that might be OK, but further south, it's so very much a bad idea. There is
mud.

Mark, I love your pictures. I still think about the Divide a lot.

Here's an elevation profile of the whole route:

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish rides in metro NYC area?

2017-04-24 Thread Bob B
John G,

Awesome! You're right, there are sections of the OCA that are really
choppy, where the trail ends and you have to hop off, and find your way
back to it. Very annoying, I really wish it was more continuous because
there are not a lot of long, easy dirt trails around NYC.

Glad you had a good ride, though.

Picked these up 2 weeks ago. Only ended up wearing once on the bike and once
around the house. They are just not the correct size for me. This is the new
version of these shorts Rivendell has them listed as sold out on their website.
These are the mediums and the waist size is listed as 32" expandable to 43".
$65 shipped within the Continental US.

[RBW] Re: The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

Leah, great minds think alike! Yesterday I sat down and did a major
shopping spree at Riv online. I started out wanting to get a blue extra
small bag but they were already sold out. SoI ordered the gray one. I
also got the tan grab bag which I plan to use for my purse. So, we shall
see if it functions ok at that duty. Bought a bunch of other stuff but
wanted to finally spring on the Saddleback products.

2017-04-24 Thread Surlyprof
Very cool student project, Patrick. They did a great job with that
prototype.

My concern with so many of the "Tweel-like" solutions is that I'm not sure
where the adjustability is. Although I don't know how well these
( https://www.loopwheels.com/ ) work in distributing the pressures put on
tires, I could see more potential for adjustability. Maybe combined with
that outer rim of swept, flexible spokes may be an answer. Don't know.
One thing about pneumatics, if you need a softer rides it's just an air
valve push away.

[RBW] Re: The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread Valerie Yates
I love the shopsacks. I don't use them as handbags but I definitely use
them off the bike as often as I do on. I prefer the medium size for use on
the bike. For me, that is mostly grocery shopping / farmer's market, the
gym, etc. The medium fits perfectly in the medium Wald basket and the Wald
Bosco basket. I would want it secured in the large Wald basket but I think
that could easily be done.

I tried the large/large combo and it is bigger than I need or want on a
bike but it is excellent for errands made via car where I am toting around
large, heavy, or awkward items (pet food, books, laserjet toner cartridges,
fabric, goodwill donations, etc.)

[RBW] Re: WTB-50-52 CM Frame

2017-04-24 Thread Peter H
Thanks Joe. That's a beauty of a appaloosa! I'm sure someone will snatch that
up it's a lovely build and a great price. Unfortunately a bit outside my budget
for my wife's project bike.

I've been eyeing the local Craig's ( Massachusetts) and I'm going to keep an
eye out for Riv's but there few to be found locally, but I've been seeing some
decent condition and Bridgestone RB-T and MB's and thinking something along
those lines might be a good direction given my budget for the project and the
amount of riding she will be doing.

Thanks for taking a look and the feedback!

Best,

Peter

2017-04-24 Thread LeahFoy
Oh, Chris, we DO think alike. And we've got ourselves in trouble now. All these
bags in all these colors... So, I also use the Grabsack as a purse. It's a
great, lightweight bag for summer, but has muted enough looks that it actually
is great for any season. It holds my whole iPad, and like most Riv bags, has
more room than you think. I do wish the bag held its shape at the bottom, but
yours is the tan and those are made from tougher material which may hold its
shape. This bag would really shine if I was the type to carry more in my bag,
but I'm a minimalist. If you tend to schlep around more stuff, you'll love the
Grabsack!

Also, I came across these on Amazon, and just may adorn one of my Sackvilles
with them:
https://www.amazon.com/Nostalgic-Assorted-Hipster-Embroidered-Applique/dp/B01L0IBVBC/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1493065448&sr=8-17&keywords=bicycle+iron+on+patch

Valerie, I agree! Medium is more my size. The large looks too big. I could also
see this bag being great for the beach (shaking out the sand would be easy), or
for tossing extra clothing in when traveling, or as airplane carryon, or a
library bag...the possibilities are endless. I bought my sister the gray
Shopsack for Christmas one year, but I don't think the previous colors were
pretty enough to be carried as handbags. I changed my mind when I saw the
Sapphire though. That bag looked downright pretty.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish rides in metro NYC area?

2017-04-24 Thread Brad
John G & Bob B,

The first time I rode the OCA, I was on one of the Fall iBOB rides about 10
years ago. You can find maps on the internet, but riding with someone else
is the easiest way to figure out the route when the OCA trail disappears
and reappears.

I rode on the Bike Snob pre-Grand Fondont ride this weekend. Eben put
together a route that used the OCA trail and the Putnam Trailway. I've
ridden both trails a lot, but Eben's course used a lot of weird little
connectors to shift between them. Last weekend's ride was a test. The real
Grand Fondont is coming up in June. I'd recommend it if you're trying to
find interesting rides out of NYC.

[RBW] Re: WTB-50-52 CM Frame

2017-04-24 Thread Joe Bernard
There's a nice 50cm RB-T on Ebay, plus some MBs..all good bikes. This 53cm
RB-1 caught my eye: I'm not normally a big fan of Bstones repainted a different
color, but this red with black decals (instead of white) is nicely done. Good
mix of original and modern parts, although she might not like the 172.5 cranks.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/222486127890

Re: [RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-24 Thread George Schick
Helicopter tape arrived in the mail today. More than enough to do six
bikes - the eBay retailer must feel embarrassed and wanting to make up for
the lost time (in shipping). Installed the tape on the drive-side chain
stay and my Ram feels comfort in having no more chain slap to look forward
to.

Thanks to Les, in particular, for bringing this helicopter tape to our
attention. And thanks to several others for their advice and suggestions
on how to install it. I'd only add a few bits from my personal experience
today: I used the recommended water spray method to position the tape into
its final position. All worked well except that the thick, 14mil tape
didn't want to bend and stay in place around the fairly sharp bend of the
chain stay. So I got out the heat gun and put it on low setting to blow
under the parts of the tape that wouldn't bend around the stay in order to
dry it a bit while I smoothed it into place. It worked well, except that a
heat gun even on low was probably overkill - a hair dryer would've probably
been better.

Also, before cutting a piece of the tape with an exact-o knife, I cut a
template out of heavy paper to get a feel how it would fit, tapering one
end of it slightly to accommodate the shape of the chain stay. Then, I
held that over a length of the helio-tape and traced around it with the
exact-o knife, rounding both ends so there would be no sharp 90º ends that
could hooked and start to peel. The rest was as the OP and others
explained it and now I have an excellent strip of chain stay protection on
the Ram without sacrificing the nice color of the frame.

Again, thanks to all. Oh, BTW, as those who work in painting and
refinishing like to say, "preparation is 90º of the job." Be sure to
thoroughly clean all wax off the frame part you want to protect with a
slightly diluted citrus solvent like Finish Line, wash the residue off with
water, and then clean the surface again with 90º isopropyl alcohol before
processing with the installation.

Re: [RBW] FS: 55cm Cheviot, 56cm RB-T, 54cm San Marcos F/F

2017-04-24 Thread Dan McNamara
I am the first owner - it was from the first batch so that is about 2.5
years, I think, It has seen pretty light use - I used it to carry my
daughter on the rear and wanted a frame made the step through fairly easy.
Now she is on her own bike (sometimes.)

I might be able to do Friday afternoon.

The bike will have the Rock n' Roads on it, just FYI.

I'll confirm on Wednesday afternoon - I am heading out of town until then.

Oh, no! The custom does get its share of comments. I was referring to the

2017-04-24 Thread Dan McNamara
There is enough clearance for the SKS p50 - they measure about 42. If you
are not going to hit the trails I would do a different tire. I have some
other tires that would work - Soma New Express and Big Bens. Big Bens would
be tough for enders. With the New Express you could use the SKS P45.

Rainy day today at DC. Rained the whole day and night. Traffic at the MUT was
sparse and sporadic at best, both during the morning and evening commutes.
Noticeably absent were the pace lines from the TdF wannabes training on the MUT
at full speed. The zippies must have taken the bus to work. The light rain made
the peace and quiet even more enjoyable. Tomorrow's weather is forecasted the
same! Cant wait!

Re: [RBW] Today's commute

2017-04-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Pano: if you can post some photos of WDC cycling and infrastructure,
particularly in the National Cathedral/Wisconsin Ave/Mass Ave node, I'd be
very interested to see them. I lived in The Chancery apartments from Jan
'84 until December '88, and took up cycling again there after a few-year
hiatus.

Isn't this Cherry Blossom time? I recall a Cherry Blossom period ride along
the path that ran between the Kennedy Center and the Potomac; crisp, clear,
blue sky no clouds, cherry trees in full spate, and regrettably a pretty
girl with a flat who had was already being assisted by another gentleman. I
was riding either a weirdly cheaply spec'd Cannondale sports tourer sold by
LL Bean for $275 shipped, or a Alvit 5 speed Sprite with North Road bars
flipped and chopped.

Re: [RBW] Re: rave review for Appaloosa

2017-04-24 Thread Patrick Moore
I wasn't riding anything as nice as your bike -- a '91 Specialized
Stumpjumper Team, hotrodded for road -- but I recall an incident where
(Gallup, NM) I stupidly got my front wheel into a grating and flipped over
the bar. A line of cars went by, some of the occupants laughing, but an
old, primered pickup stopped with 2 Deliverance types inside. The passenger
rolled down his window and concernedly asked me if I was alright, and if I
needed a ride. (I took the ride, to the hospital where I was PR Director.)
Turn's out Bill and Bub were on their way to a machinist to get their

We are very fortunate in DC to have literally thousands of miles of bike
friendly roads and MUTs. This link shows a good representation of what is
available, both paved and unsaved http://bikewashington.org/routes/best.htm

The National Cathedral/Mass Ave/Wisconsin Ave node is best accessed by New
Mexico Ave/Garfield St or Woodley/34th St. (behind the Chancery Apts) see page
2 of this map
https://ddot.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/ddot/publication/attachments/dc_bike_map_2012_full_version.pdf
DC and the neighboring cities are doing a nice job assigning more streets as
bike-friendly as well as carving out bike lanes on thoroughfares. This past
Sunday I started from my house at AU Park and did a 40 mile loop to Great Falls
and then to Rock Creek Park with at least 95% of the route being on bike
friendly scenic roads. It is simply great!

The Cherry Blossom period is over now by at least two weeks. The sudden frost
we had just before the blossom peak unfortunately placed a significant toll on
their splendor this year. A lot of tourists were disappointed I'm sure.

Re: [RBW] Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread GAJett
A pipe wrench or "Channel-locks" are certainly better than slipjoint pliers!
(Sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do.)

Re hammers... "If it can't be fixed with a hammer, it can't be fixed!" (I
told that to a copier repair person once. He laughed so hard he dropped
his screwdriver. Took him an extra 1/2 hour to retrieve it. He was still
laughing once it was back in hand.)
Cheers!

[RBW] FS / WTT - Nitto R14 w/ tombstone for Nitto R14 w/o tombstone

2017-04-24 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I was impatient and preemptively ordered a pretty R14 with a tombstone from
Japan, only to find that it 100% won't work with my large Saddlesack + Joe
Appaloosa.

Open to trade it with someone who has the non-tombstone version and wishes
they had otherwise. Perhaps we could just trade the platform if you've
already got struts cut for your bike.

Or I'd just sell it, $100 + shipping costs.

[RBW] Re: Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread Scott McLain
Another reason to go steel is that the fork steerer is steel and so it is
always better to use like metals. Aluminum does not do really well with
threads, it galls and wants to get stuck. Grease works as a dialectic to
prevent or slow down galvanic corrosion. If you do go with Aluminum, I
would grease it really good.

I must disclose that I have never adjusted a headset nut in my life
aluminum or steel.

[RBW] Re: The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread Scott McLain
Carla,
That will look great on the SAM!!!

Great thread. My wife and I traveled 1,000 miles with our Rivs to tour San
Francisco. It was great! I highly recommend Streets of San Francisco Bike
tours. Anyway, she has the grey shopsack in her Wald on her Betty and got
several compliments on her shopsack as we were in and out of shops. She was
out hipping the hipsters. It fits perfectly in the medium wald. Saphire
is a good name for the new blue or indigo. I am thinking it will look
really cool as it fades and gets some beausage... kind of like me.

Gotta love the Betty! Rene's $750 Betty frame is killing me.

[RBW] Re: Headset nut: aluminum vs steel

2017-04-24 Thread ted
Though you probably need a thin wrench from a bike shop for the top bearing
surface, I've found that a regular open end wrench from sears or a hardware
store is much nicer for the lock but.
In general I think it's better to buy tools from a tool store instead of a bike
store when possible.
