[RBW] Front loads on Rivendell bicycles -- how heavy?

2017-07-09 Thread drew
I put about 30lbs on a nitto big front rack on my hunq semi regularly.
Sometimes also with a rear load. Sometimes not. Panniers don't quite sit at
lowrider height on that rack. Feels very good/stable going straight and
tracking on downhill curves. Does not feel very stable maneuvering on single or
double track trails and when climbing. I attribute this to the lower speed.
I've done a couple slow topples on trails that are no problem unloaded. This is
almost always user error though.
By and large, the front handling has impressed me, especially since so many
people talk about high trail being no good for front loads. I think I like them
on the front better than the back still.

Re: [RBW] Front loads on Rivendell bicycles -- how heavy?

2017-07-09 Thread Steven Sweedler
Patrick, I carry 25-35 lbs. on the front of my All Rounder, using a small
Nitto and BG low rider racks with a large Ortlieb handlebar bag on the
Nitto and a pair of Ort. Sport packers on the lowriders. The bike handles
the load with no issues, tires are 700 x 41. Steve

[RBW] Re: You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell, even if ....

2017-07-09 Thread Kiley DeMond
Well, my only comment to your story is about the store, not the bike (which
really needs no comment as we are all here because we "get" Rivendell and
the beauty of the bicycle, although I continue to delight in such
anecdotes). Sprouts is a "healthy" (I use quote marks because all stores of
this ilk sell plenty that is not healthy), that started in Arizona (HQ in
Phoenix). Its full name is Sprouts Farmers Market and it chooses to open in
markets not served by Whole Foods which only opens in affluent
neighborhoods. I shopped WF for thirty years (starting in a tiny Palo Alto
WF) and now live in a city (Prescott) where the WF closed after the lease
ran out on the New Frontier Natural Marketplace location that WF purchased
in 2014 (WF purchased three of their five locations; Flagstaff and Sedona,
AZ are beautiful thriving stores. The family-owned chain kept the locations
in Sovang and Santa Maria, the latter of which has subsequently been sold
to WF). I have been shopping at Sprouts since they opened a locations in
northern California, and with my move to Arizona, I have access to more of
them than WFs (speaking of which, the WF in north Scottsdale, about 100
miles from Prescott, is arguably the best WF I have been in; the ones in
Ann Arbor, MI are shameful). WF has Sprouts beat in prepared foods hands
down, but Sprouts has the best supplement and vitamin department I have
even been in, and all also had very knowledgeable staff.

Re: [RBW] The Gift of the Smile and Wave?

2017-07-09 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I tend to be a bit self conscious and used to really keep to myself. I remember
I decided to experiment by intentionally looking people in the eye, smiling and
nodding or saying hello or some other pleasantry. What I discovered is that MY
experience was greatly enhanced by these interactions and most people responded
in a very positive way. Previously, my reticence to make human contact was
perceived by others as aloofness, when, in fact, it was quite the opposite. I
was painfully shy. That was a long time ago, around the turn of the century
(remember when the turn of the century meant 1901?!?!?!) and it changed me
forever. I still have to think about sometimes, because my nature is to
retreat, but the rewards of a kind smile, a wave and openness are their own
rewards. Thanks Patrick, for the reminder!

[RBW] Re: You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell, even if ....

2017-07-09 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
We have several Sprouts here in OKC, which we visit weekly, and one Whole
Foods, that we've been to three times. We love Sprouts and their produce
is really good and they have good ads for what's in season. I went into
WF yesterday, for the first time in several years, and I was impressed with
the selection of products and the smell of their prepared foods areas was
divine. I was after coffee and was pleasantly surprised to find they carry
my favorite beans at a lower price than where I've been buying them and
most importantly, they are on the shelf a few days after roasting!! The
shop where I've been buying beans only has beans roasted back in May, which
I refuse to buy.

I've also heard rumors that Albertsons is trying to buy Sprouts, much like
Amazon bought WF. I don't consider that a good thing since Albertsons was
a failed grocery chain around here.

Bicycle content is that WF is the only place between Sprouts, WF and Trader
Joes where I routinely see bicycles locked up outside and it's certainly
the most likely to place to see a Riv. The two bikes that were there
yesterday were old steel fixies, one with no brakes. A true track bike.

[RBW] Delight of rain

2017-07-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
Yesterday was hot for around here. 84˚F at 9,000 feet. Riding home the
thunderclouds that had been building since noon broke loose. Unlike most
storms, this one didn’t drop the temperature into the 40’s or 50’s. It stayed
in the upper 70’s. I left my rain jacket in my bag and delighted in the wet
soaking my cotton shirt, cooling me off. Combined with the delicious scents of
rain, ozone, flashing lightening and rumbling thunder coming down and mixing
with earth, sage, flowers, pine, and aspen, it was a veritable feast.

This morning, the sun was out, the ground moist and pocked , fresh and giving
off the smell of summer loam of long decay, pine, and growth in the warmth.
Pockets of air still cool from the moist night air tantalized as at rode
through them, lingering by slowing my pedaling.

After weeks of hot and dusty grit, these two rides were spectacularly
refreshing.

With abandon,
Patrick

Long as you're not out in it during one of those thunderstorms, that is.
Lightning, especially at those altitudes, can be very lethal and it can
strike a long way from where the storm appears to be.

[RBW] Re: You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell, even if ....

2017-07-09 Thread ascpgh
While not on my Rivendell, at my grandparents' in Sun City, AZ, in it's
early days, my grandad had an English Raleigh to ride in retirement until
he realized the climate was better for making jerky or sitting in the AC
until sunset. Standard issue gentleman's commuter; SA 3x rear hub, Brooks
saddle, key lock fork, caliper brakes, partial chances and bottle generator
for headlight and fender tail light. I could get on it and I could ride it.
At first I thought the yet sold, unpaved or engineered margins of the
development were fun, then I ranged into the wild flat desert beyond.

I used that for trips into the desert. The area was sold to retirees as
safe, new, modern, convenient and wonderful for hosting family visits with
all the rec centers, golf courses, etc. I used that as my cover and mostly
headed north along the Aguia Fria River valley up what was the soon
petered-out 99th Avenue and up to what became Lake Pleasant. The
construction phase was interesting because I could take my skateboard and
ride inside the giant concrete pipes on site for the engineering phase to
come for the project.

Some of my earliest bike adventures were out in the desert on that bike,
stopped mostly by rising terrain terrain at the north boundary of the
valley. I learned to love sunscreen, generator lights, bigger tires, lots
of extra water and spare tubes out there. Now all paved and curbed, Lake
Pleasant populated by boaters and even the western hills beyond Luke AFB is
just a paved drive to a park in the creeping sprawl.

I tried to recreate one of my adventures on my last health and welfare trip
to see my grandmother and took my RB-1. 99th Ave was now just another road
instead of an absolute north-south route on a survey line, so I followed
whatever dirt road aimed North, promising to turn around at the second
flat, having four tubes and a patch kit.

While changing my second flat, I heard a motorcycle coming my way, but not
the common high RPM two-stroke MX bike. I was a bit concerned for being so
vulnerable out there. As it neared in I saw that it was red, had a sidecar
and its exhaust said it was an opposed twin. It turned out to be an Aral
driven by a very old guy who shut it off and said "nice bike" and was very
interested in bikes.

He turned out to have been a lesser board track racer who transitioned into
a commuter rail engineer in the Boston area. He spoke of recognizing other
six-day riders by their off-bike gait including one on the station platform
the called to from the locomotive. He turned to motorcycles in later life
and lesser fitness, frequenting the Tourist Trophy race on the Isle of Man
as an annual vacation, and befriending another American who he ran across
frequently and joined after the TT to the continent to ride across several
countries. It was Steve Forbes.

He offered me his bicycle parts stash, current to the late 50s, if I
wanted, complimenting the thinly veiled Campagnolo "Sachs" group I picked
up at InterBike that year and the lacing of my wheels, assessing me to be
worthy. I thanked him for the offer and said I really needed to get back
before dinner and we parted with a wave.

I didn't think so at the time, but that was a really memorable chance
meeting and exchange in the middle of the desert. He would have loved my
Rivendell had he seen it.

[RBW] Re: Delight of rain

2017-07-09 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick,

I hope you will reconsider your behavior during thunderstorms. The facts
don't support your lackadaisical view of lightning.
 http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/
Lightning is the number one weather related killer in Colorado. Even when
folks are not killed by a lightning strike, it can alter and diminish the
remainder of their life.
http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_lls/fatalities_us.html
Living at 9000ft, your risk of lightning strike is enhanced over the
Colorado state average.

Lightning is NOT at all predictable where it will strike. As a NWS
forecaster giving presentations on the subject, I used to say "lightning is
very powerful but very lazy." It will always find the easiest path to
discharge. Yes the probabilities are greatest for higher elevations during
the afternoon hours, but that doesn't mean probabilities are zero for lower
elevations during the morning or evening.

Be safe out there!

[RBW] Atlas-like but tubeless

Any recommendations for a atlas-like rim that is tubeless ready? I was about to
pull the trigger on an atlas dyno wheelset, but now I'm wondering about wanting
the option to go tubeless in the future, if I'm dropping a significant chunk of
money.
So I'd be looking for a double wall, 19mm minimum internal, rim braking, 36
hole, tour and trail capable rim.
Anything good out there? Rims are not something I frequently check out, so I'm
pretty ignorant here.

[RBW] Atlas-like but tubeless

2017-07-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
Why 36 hole?

Pacenti brevet and HED Belgium Plus would be my top two, but I do t think you
can get the HED rims in 36 hole.

I've got a couple weeks on the 700c version and I think they're fantastic,
and certainly a rarity being tubeless compatible and rim brake ready.

Not really (although that is what the ad says). I was going to post this a
week or so ago because it was $1300 which I thought was a great deal.
Unfortunately not my size. Now they seem to be selling it for $600 today, $750
tomorrow and the back to $1300.

Good luck to you taller bay area folks.

36 just cause I tend to overload and overabuse. Probably woundnt damage a 32
hole, but 36 would give me better piece of mind, i think.

Good info on the cliffhangers. I was looking at them too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Delight of rain

2017-07-09 Thread Eric Norris
Ask Google, and it answers:

Myth: Rubber tires on a car protect you from lightning by insulating you from
the ground.
Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it is the metal roof and metal
sides that protect you, NOT the rubber tires. Remember, convertibles,
motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled outdoor recreational vehicles and cars with
fiberglass shells offer no protection from lightning. When lightning strikes a
vehicle, it goes through the metal frame into the ground. Don't lean on doors
during a thunderstorm.

Relevant part: Remember, convertibles, motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled
outdoor recreational vehicles and cars with fiberglass shells offer no
protection from lightning.

Source is NOAA, which is pretty dependable:
http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/myths.shtml

So, according to the US weather experts, your bike’s tires won’t protect you in
a lighting storm.

The Boston museum of science has a great lightning hall with the world's
largest Vandergraft generator and good solid science talk. They said rubber
soled shoes would insulate a person in a storm, but the soles would need to be

[RBW] Re: You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell, even if ....

2017-07-09 Thread 'peech1...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
I live along the Mississippi River near LaCrosse, Wisconsin. This past
weekend I happened to be riding my orange Sammy when I stopped at the
trailhead to the Sparta Elroy Bike trail near La Crosse. I came to a
sudden stop in front of about 9 guys resting in the shade, one of whom said
immediately (referring to me) "well he'll fit right in". Then I started
looking at their bikes: all wide tired, loaded down for touring, fenders,
steel, lugs, etc. There was a nice Sam Hillborne and Atlantis in the lot
of them. We had the best conversation talking bikes. What fun. I felt a
real kinship. I learned the boys were riding from Dubuque, Iowa to (I
don't know where they were eventually headed) along the Mississippi River
Trail. I wish i'd gotten a name or 2. I encouraged them to post their
ride on this blog. Hope they do. I would say we all have a debt of
gratitude to Grant Petersen.
