[RBW] Re: [BOB] ISO: 9 cm Ritchey stem (again), black, but this time +/- 17 degrees; wee little container for loose allens

2017-08-26 Thread iamkeith
I use drawstring crown royal bags - for almost everything - out of decades-long
engrained habit. So at any given time my saddle bag will have three or more in
it as sub-organizers: camera, lighting system, wallet & cell phone, patch kit
and tools. At home, other bags contain pocket knives, first aid kit, fishing
license & tackle, hand warmers, ski wax, more cameras, compass & signal
mirrors, headlamps and flashlights, etc., etc.

Doesn't EVERYBODY do this?

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-08-26 Thread William R.
Bill,

I've been following this thread and enjoying your bikes and stories. 1000 miles
in a month is pretty impressive. I know there are segments of the cycling
populace where that's not that big of a deal. But in this segment, where a lot
of us are (ageing, speaking of myself only!) working stiffs with families, I
know that is no small feat. Looking back through my Cyclemeter meter app shows
699 as my highest monthly mileage. And that was a May a couple years back that
was unusually dry for the north east and I rode every day with not too many
miles in my legs from the preceding months. And I remember really "feeling" it!
Good on you! Looking forward to the rest of your bikes and your sabbatical.

Bill in Westchester, NY

[RBW] FS: Olive Acorn Trifold, Gravel Kings, Tiagra Brake Levers, Claris Derailers

I have the following items for sale:

   1. Olive color Acorn Trifold. Brand new and never used. *$25 shipped.*

https://www.acornbags.com/collections/bags/products/trifold-bag?variant=25544189832

   2. Panaracer Gravel King tires. Mounted once but never ridden. They
have zero miles. 700X32C with black sides. These are basically Pari-Motos

*$60 shipped for the pair *
   https://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/panaracer-gravel-king-tire

   3. Shimano Claris Front and Rear Derailers. These are very low mileage
and were on the RIvendell Roadeo demo bike that I had. It looks like these
are 8 speed when indexed but of course can do anything within reason with
friction shifting. Perfect for a Roadini build. * $25 shipped for both*

   4. Shimano Tiagra Brake Levers. These are the ones that Rivendell
sells. Great condition with very low miles. Came from the same demo
   Roadeo. *$25 shipped*

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-26 Thread lum gim fong
1.What kind do you like?

2.Are they easy to use? I am used to whole fist shifting with bar ends, but
wonder how easy it is to accurately flip the lever into the next cog with
thumbies.

3.Can you really just use your thumb, or do you wind up trimming alot with
thumb and index/middle grip?

4. Do they work well on mountain/comfort bike straight bar setups?

5. Can I use my Silver shifter levers mounted to a Paul type stop, or are
those dog hind leg shaped shimano levers better for thumb shifting?

Thanks for the info.
My wife's bike has index twist shifters which have never performed that
well and was thinking of redo-ing her cockpit with ergo grips, Shimano MTN
type levers and thumb shifters.
I'd really like to get her a Rivendell mixte, but she likes her Raleigh.
Good thing is the thumbie setup would be totally transferable to an RBW
bike later.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-26 Thread Kellie
I have thumbies with paul's on my Saluki; drop bar. They work great. I put
Shimano 9 Dura Ace with the Paul's. I use One-At-A-Time SunRace on my
Atlantis on a Choco (norm) bar. I flipped them into the inside of the bar
(Rivendell way) which is so comfortable and natural. And yes you can really
use your thumb.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-26 Thread Garth
I have multiple pairs of Sun Tour thumbshifters and have used them on bikes
since 1983.

I have never shifted with just my thumb. Imagine if you extend your arm out a
bit, and with your thumb and forefinger together in a circle like you're
turning a dial, flex your wrist a bit.

I just love 'em. I have a bunch of Sun Tour Sprint shifters too, but have never
tried using any of the mounts these dayze. The ones I have work fine and love
that they are thick and stubby and ergonomic , which the Sprint/Silver shaped
ones are not. I always thought they were too thin even as dt shifters. It
befuddles me why no one but the "cheap" Sun Race and Falcon thumbshifters make
them nice and thick with a rubber coating, instead everyone keeps copying the
dt style and mounting them on some doo-dad. Jack of all mounts and master of
none.

Good question; I was reading about this myself the other day, and wondered
if it is worth the high price so that you can get electric assist with one
of your favorite bikes.

I'm sure the price will come down with economies of scale.

And the biggest question of all: will this work with a fixed gear?

Joe Bernard: your opinion in particular?

Re: [RBW] Re: Custom bike

2017-08-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I think there is a complication. If I remember correctly, Grant actually
named his company after a '70s, US manufacturer of camping gear --
Rivendell Mountain Works? Whether or not it was they, they have a current
web presence.*

*And isn't that a sinister phrase? (Whooo! A web presence!)

>From the RMW "web presence":

The Back Story

Rivendell Mountain Works was the brainchild of Larry Horton back in 1971.
The flagship products were both based on designs created by the late Don
Jensen, who was a climber active with the Harvard Mountaineering Club, in
the 1960’s. Larry had a keen sense of how to manufacture these products to
a high standard and a design philosophy of adhering to a theme of
simplicity. In the 1977 catalog, Larry wrote “In spite of our choice to
remain a cottage industry-or, perhaps, because of it-we have managed to
continue an innovative influence on the world of equipment for backpackers,
climbers and skiers.”

One thing that RMW gear came to represent, in the 1970’s, was gear that was
reliable and had great longevity. Packs and tents are certainly two of the
most important items that you need to be able to trust implicitly. Even now
the Jensen Pack™ is built to be far more durable than many packs on the
market today. For longevity and during extreme use, it is just not going to
come apart on you. These packs are overbuilt to the nines.

[RBW] Re: Anyone tried a Copenhagen wheel on their Rivbike??

2017-08-26 Thread Valerie Yates
I have the Roscoe Bubbe with Copenhagen Wheel. I had ordered the wheel
pre-launch and waited 3 years for it. In 2013, it was $700. The wheel is
terrific. It works very intuitively. I haven't weighed the bike but I don't
think you are saving weight with this approach. The wheel is extremely
heavy. The main benefit is that the appearance is sleek and doesn't limit
your space for water bottles, racks, bags, etc. The distance it can go on a
charge is about 30 miles. I need to upgrade the firmware because that is
supposed to make the regenerative braking feature more effective, which
would add to its range. They also upgraded the top speed to 25 mph. It has
an exercise mode that provides resistance. I haven't tried that. There's a
single speed option but not fixed gear. I'd be happy to answer any other
questions. Roman took some nice pics of it that you can see here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone tried a Copenhagen wheel on their Rivbike??

2017-08-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the photos.

No fixed gear compatibility? Faugh!

Frankly, one of the reasons that I'd be more interested in this than other
electric bike motor options, is that it looks nice -- "is aesthetically
pleasing."

Can anyone say if it will, or absolutely will not, work with a fixed cog?

I'm sort of surprised the Copenhagen wheel isn't vaporware anymore, but

2017-08-26 Thread Joe Bernard
Check near the end of the "New Clem L" thread for my current build. It's a
Bafang BBS02 mid-drive, which Luna Cycle is currently running a promotion on
for $750 complete kit with downtube-mounted battery (I'm running two mini
batteries in a TrunkSack). It's lighter than the Copenhagen..should add about
12 pounds.

Patrick: An electric fixie is madness! Trust me, you don't want a motor pushing
pedals that won't freewheel. Because that would be insane. Like I always say,
don't be insane!

2017-08-26 Thread Valerie Yates
Faster than orange?? Thanks to you and Bill G. for the kind words. I am a
big fan of red and I like how it came together. I had just received notice
that my wheel was finally going to be delivered when the Red Roscoes showed
up on the Riv site. Seemed meant to be. I sent my wheel to Riv and they
installed it as part of a complete build. It turned out great and works
really well.

And Joe, I agree that an electric fixie would be madness. I might have
been happy with the single speed option but having gears is better if I
ever run out of power while out on a ride. Riding it single speed without
assist in my hilly neighborhood would be exercise.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2017-08-26 Thread Bill M.
I use a Garmin Vivoactive HR to integrate HRM, speed/time/distance/climb
and route tracking. Sometimes I wear it on my wrist, sometimes strap it to
the handlebar and use a 'bra strap' HR belt. My wife likes that the Live
Track feature of the Garmin software (running on my phone) can show my
location to her during the ride. She worries about that kind of thing,
having had to pick me up once on a ride when I was having what turned out
to be a heart attack. I use the HRM to make sure I don't over-stress my
ticker on those days when I feel strong.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-26 Thread RichS
Just converted my Atlantis to a Paul thumbie/Shimano "dog leg" style shifter
mounted on Albatross bars. Friction mode. Sorry I can't comment on the indexed
setting. My first experience with this setup and I'm enthusiastic about it! I
think it's a keeper.

Shifting with thumb or forefinger. Very smooth, comfortable, no problems at
all. 8 spd. cassette. Previous setup used Silver barends. Silver shifter now on
the downtube for the front derailer.

Best of luck with your efforts!

[RBW] Re: Custom bike

2017-08-26 Thread Christopher Murray
Legolas, Quickbeam, Baggins (a line of bags), and possibly a few others are
Tolkien names. Someone mentioned that Rivendell doesn't put Rivendell on the
downtube of non-customs and suggested it was tied to the Tolkien name issue.

Along with Tolkien, Rivendell was also an outdoor gear company Grant admired.

A bit off topic/ thread hijack for sure!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-26 Thread dougP
I had Shimano Ultegra 8 speed bar ends on my Atlantis, & simply added a set
of Paul's Thumbies when I converted it to flat bars. Works like a champ.
Index is same as before. I use my thumb when pushing away & sorta nudge
the lever with a knuckle on my forefinger going the other way. I like the
set-up a lot.

+1 for Ergon grips. If she uses the brake hoods for climbing, Ergon makes
some versions with extensions that are quite useful. But if not, the basic
unit looks a lot cleaner.

[RBW] Re: Anyone tried a Copenhagen wheel on their Rivbike??

Not necessarily. The C'wheel would not work (probably?), but a suitably
clever design could set up to have the motor follow the pedals instead of
running ahead (probably with some sort of strain meter in the hub to detect
the pull from the chain -- if there's tension on the cog, produce power,
otherwise just sit there and read a book or kick in regenerative braking
if the strain meter notices that the operator is resisting against the
pedals.)

[RBW] Re: Anyone tried a Copenhagen wheel on their Rivbike??

2017-08-26 Thread Joe Bernard
Actually, all you need is a front hub motor. It has no idea what rear wheel
you're using, so the manufacturer wouldn't have to deal with the liability of
selling a fixie electric kit. You just pedal pedal pedal, then stab the
throttle when you want to pedal faster. Go for it, Patrick!
