Ugh... why did you have to post this dream bike of mine and in my size, too. I
almost built a knock-off a few years ago and had a guy lined up to bend the
forks for me. Never completed the project. I had those same delta cruisers on a

[RBW] Re: No More Rambouillet Decals @ RBW

2017-11-02 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Hate to hear that about the Ram decals, but they aren't that hard to copy
and there are a few places online that will do it. I like the traditional
minimalist decal approach used on Rivs.

However, knowing that may prompt me to cover the decals on my orange Ram
with 3M clear protective tape. That tape worked great for protecting decals
on my celeste Bianchi during several seasons of CX racing. Clear protective
tape does have a SPF, as when I removed it from the Bianchi the difference
between the colors was obvious (it is celeste pearl, parallel to the orange
pearl on the Ram). The celeste paint still looks good, but the protected
paint is more vibrant and rich. I guess clearcoat doesn't have a SPF
factor, but clear film definitely does!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

Man, that would look nice with that AM hub that I've been hoarding for a
few years. Too bad that it already has wheels ... (or rather, good thing,
for my budget).

How does it ride, with that 1930s geometry, compared to a modern road bike
-- let's illustrate "modern" by a Roadeo, a Roadini, a Bleriot, a pre 1990
Trek, a nice UJB, or something like that.

I'll bet those 28" tires are plush.

Hello Bill,

You decoded my rather too brief question correctly. I was mostly interested in
what you do for lighting on the Hillborne for rando rides. The pictures of the
bicycle in this thread don't show the lighting arrangement and at this time of
year, daylight is limited for brevet rides. So I wondered.

It's snowing heavily here today, winter has arrived too soon. Please post a
ride report after the upcoming brevet so the northern amongst us can enjoy
vicariously.

The genesis of these type of ridiculous Grant Petersen threads on that site
derives from the often mutti-page arguments about Rivendell vs. Older road

[RBW] Re: Next big ride and a 1xRoadbike

2017-11-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
Ian A asked a general question, but I suspect might have meant something
specific. I'm not sure what specific question he meant.

Today? Today, I have a Light and Motion rechargeable battery powered thing
that a friend of mine won at a 24 hour mountain bike race, and he
perma-loaned to me. I don't know the model and the model probably doesn't
matter because it's old.

In general? I move around this battery powered thing to whatever bike I'm
riding, if the bike I'm riding has no dynamo. Many of my bikes have a
dynamo hub. I set up this bike and my Rosco Bubbe Road with the same rims,
so those two bikes can swap front wheels. One has a Dura Ace hub, and the
other has a Son Deluxe dynamo hub. So, sometimes I run this bike with a
Schmidt dynamo hub and a hanging Edelux lamp.

Rear lighting? This bike has a Dutch fender taillight.

Did you mean something else?

[RBW] Re: A question about frame bags

2017-11-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tim, I’ve refrained from chiming in, but seeing your more specific circumstance
and desire I feel obliged. I love bikepacking my Hunqapillar with rear panniers
and loading my sleeping bag/pad/tent on top of the rear rack. I sometimes add a
small trunk sack with food to a mini front rack, but of late I prefer leaving
the front wheel empty. I ride fairly technical singletrack with this set up and
have zero issue with handling. You can see my set up here:
https://thegrid.ai/withabandon/s24o-on-the-skirts-of-pikes-peak

I’ve ridden a bit of the Colorado Trail, the Continental Divide Trail (both
nearly all single track) and a few hundred miles of the Great Divide MTB trail
(mostly forest service roads in various states of (dis)repair) and this is the
set up I’ve settled on for me. I care what I need for comfort no matter which
of the four seasons shows up, so I’m prepard for down to zero nights and
whatever winds occure, even in the middle of summer. My load totals about 50
pounds with food and water.

Biking trails with a load requires a different set of expectations and handling
skills than biking the same trails without a load. Kinda the difference between
riding a spirited mountain horse with and without him loaded for camping, I
expect. The only way to learn it is to do it, and you’re well on your way with
the trip you’ve already taken. Play, have fun, and you’ll learn something with
every trip, no matter how often you’ve gone — and some of those will be grand
adventures BECAUSE of what you get to learn. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Which of course makes perfect sense, if you read what you posted from the
brochure I posted--the Roadini sizes are 2-3cm smaller than the more
conventional Roadeo sizes. So, the 54 Roadini will fit like a 56-57cm
Roadeo, ergo, it has a 56.5cm effective top tube.

Grant once punched a hole in a cow just so he could see who was

Did I ever tell you about the time Grant was in a production of
‘The King and I’? On opening night, Grant chloroformed the entire

My Hillborne has been through numerous configurations. The Campee F27
front rack that I have installed right now is fairly heavy.

By my bathroom scale reckoning, we're at 26.8lbs as pictured with the
handlebar bag removed. That 26.8 pounds is with the Campee F27 rack, with
the fenders, with a Berthoud decaleur. Aluminum fenders weigh about a
pound. The rack and decaleur are probably over two pounds together. When
I had it set up more as a cross bike, with no fenders, no rack and no
decaleur, it was a hair under 24 pounds.

Thanks for all the input. I'm really curious about bike packing and touring. I
did my first tour this past May and used my Berthoud handlebar bag and Nitto
big rear rack with panniers on my Hilsen. I found the handling a little
squirrely but I'm 230, so with luggage there was quite a load. I think an
Atlantis would have handled it better. And for bikepacking, my Hunqapillar has
the diagatube, so I think that would limit a frame bag a lot, and each triangle
has a bottle holder as well.

Re: [RBW] Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-11-02 Thread Leah Peterson
Thanks for reading, everyone. I’m so happy your devices didn’t crash with the
onslaught of photos.

I forgot to add one last thing re: the Bicycle Bus - how could I forget this?

This could be titled, Leah’s Bicycle Bus Goes to Court.

It was 3:00 pm on a lovely May day. School had just let out, and my two sons
and I were perched upon the sidewalk holding onto our bikes and waiting for the
WALK sign to walk the bikes across the crosswalk. There were several other kids
standing with us. I know it sounds crazy, but it was like it happened in slow
motion - an SUV came straight for us, came UP OVER THE CURB, ONTO THE SIDEWALK
and nearly hit us. Inches. Mere inches away. The driver continued to drive, his
two right wheels up on the sidewalk, driving as if nothing was amiss. There was
a row of orange cones near the curb, and as he drove on, he ran over two and
they became wedged under his chassis. He never reacted like anything was amiss;
he just kept driving. Clearly, this person is impaired. As we were still trying
to take this all in, a car drove by us with the window down and the driver, a
woman, said, “I saw that! I’m calling 911!”

We were all ok, and pulled ourselves together and began our climb up the hill.
When we reached the top, that kind woman had pulled over and was waiting for
police. She had followed the driver to the the entrance of the gated community
he must live in, and had reported his license plate number. She had been
following this driver because before our encounter, he had hit her car with his
and refused to stop. The damage to her car was minimal, and as she drove behind
him, she was mulling over whether to call the police or not when she saw him
drive up onto the sidewalk into a crowd of school kids. Now she knew what she
should do. We waited together until the police arrived.

The police officer wrote down our information and told us there were 5 other
recent incidents on this driver’s record besides ours. He was a tenacious
officer, not willing to give up and let this person go free. He went straight
to the residence but the man refused to answer the door. The officer continued
to make contact and hours later the man answered the door, and he was falling
down drunk. There was no way to prove he was drunk at the time of his incident
with us, so they read him the riot act but left without an arrest. They did
file charges of failure to maintain his lane and leaving the scene of an
accident. Just before my trip to Europe I found out the drunk was fighting
these charges, prompting the City to subpoena me (and other other woman
involved) to court as a witness. I’ve stayed out of trouble my whole life, so
being in court is new and intimidating for me. I was greatly relieved when the
court date was called off two nights before I left for Europe. I returned home,
planted my feet on American soil just in time to get another subpoena, this
one for December 13. The investigator who subpoenaed me said the guy is likely
trying to cut a deal, thus the continuance. I’m rather dreading facing this man
in court. I never saw his face, only his vehicle, so I’m not a good witness.
The other woman will be more important, I would think. I am not looking forward
to an attorney pointing this out to me, or to having my character questioned. I
also know where this man lives and thanks to Facebook, who he is. Which means
he can know who I am as well. He has a lot of money and is in a really bad
emotional state; thanks to FB I also know he has a teenage son dying of brain
cancer. I feel for him, but he’s going to kill someone.

Tim,

The frame bag allows you to utilize a oft under utilized space. I have over
stuffed mine and it does not interfere with my pedaling. It also allows you
to store heavy items towards the center of gravity of the bike.

Sorry, I didn't read all the posts so perhaps I'm just repeating what
others have already mentioned.

[RBW] Next big ride and a 1xRoadbike

2017-11-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
I've signed up for my next big ride, which should be comparatively easy
after my last one. The Uvas Gold 200k is on December 2nd. It's completely
paved, and has ONLY 7200 feet of climbing. Most of the climbing is in the
first 45 miles and includes a summit of Mount Hamilton overlooking the San
Jose-Fremont area. I'm going to ride my Sam Hillborne. I'm also going to
try a new experiment: this will be my first 200k brevet on a 1x road
bike. I've swapped things around and now my Hillborne is a 1x9, with a 42T
narrow/wide ring and an 11-32 9-speed cassette.

By my calculations, my gears range between 36 and 105 inches with the
center cog at 64 inches. I think that will be plenty for this course, but
we'll see. I'm contemplating a 1x10 build coming up in the not-too-distant
future.

Lost my keys on a ride once. They were clipped to my saddle bag. I remember
blasting down a rough trail thinking how it was so quiet... Didn't realize
they had unclipped themselves in all the commotion. Someone called me the

with my name and number on my keys. A trail runner had picked them up. I
met him in a parking lot near by and gave him 20$. Well worth it.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Salsa Fargo Titanium large

2017-11-02 Thread Bruce Smitham
I just tried to fit a 27.5 x 2.8 Schwalbe G-One All Rounder. The front
wheel fits inside the steel fork no problem but the rear doesn't have much
space in the upper chain stays. You could easily fit a 2.5 tire in the rear
though.

2017-11-02 Thread Bruce Smitham
Hi Geeter,

I did run with original drops. Fine but I'm a Jones bar guy so...
I never tried setting up 650 plus. My other fargo ti has thru axle and
boost rear spacing so I couldn't use those wheels to test. I probably
should at least set the wheel inside to check. This older Fargo Ti has
quick release 135mm rear. Good call. Yeah, I love the slack, high stack and
close reach. Everything I want without going custom.

Re: [RBW] Re: No More Rambouillet Decals @ RBW

2017-11-02 Thread RichS
Bruce, I'll confirm what Steve said about cut vinyl for graphics. Works
well. I used them on a Surly Cross Check single speed after I stripped all
the existing graphics. If you have a sign shop nearby you could give them a
digital file of whatever you can obtain or create and they could produce
your graphics.

Since I'm in your neck of the woods (more or less) who is going to handle
the paint?

All the best,
Richard
