[RBW] Signing off

2018-01-06 Thread Joe Bernard
It's time, kids. That round in the Lovely Bike thread tells me I need to hush
for a while. I love the Riv company and love chatting with kindred folks about
them, but I've officially talked too much. Maybe I'll catch up to y'all next
summer, but for the moment I've said enough. Happy New Year and I'll see you
'round the bend. Tootles!

I once had the rear derailer hanger bent by a tree branch.
A local frame builder bent it back and it's rideable again.

I hope the link works correctly:

[RBW] Crankypants & Thoughtful Responses

2018-01-06 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
The tenets of this group have not changed. It's right there in the top line
- "...a respectful, supportive and polite tone in all posts."

I never expected that everyone would agree with everyone else in every
post. The world would truly be a much more boring place if that were the
case.

But excessive umbrage and accusations and generally going toe-to-toe in
recent threads which should have been innocuous makes me a bit concerned.
Hopefully, this was just an early example of the February crankiness that
pops up on this list when folks have not gotten out to ride enough.

There are a few things in those escalating threads which catch my
attention.

One is a statement which described a post as hastily made. There's not a
thing so time-dependent on this group that anyone needs to shoehorn an
immediate response between the business of the day. If someone insults you,
let it stand. The previous conversational contributions made to this group
present enough of a body of evidence as to whether any insult is valid or
ludicrous. We all have a sense of the personalities behind the comments,
especially if we've been involved in this list for any length of time. The
need to respond immediately does not exist here. There are better venues
for that. If you find yourself hammering out (or tapping out) (or dictating
to a transcription bot) a quick response, maybe you don't need to post it.

Because words are tough.

We see it play out time and time again. All we get are the words. No body
language or tone. No micro musculature movement on the face to defuse or
contextualize the words. An innocuous post taken the wrong way. Something
triggers someone and suddenly the conversation is in a death spiral towards
"So's yer old man!"

I think we're better than that.

Because we're human, that isn't always the case.

So, let's give one another the opportunity to be wrong, hold an opinion we
don't agree with, miss the point entirely or explore an idea clumsily. If
you are the smartest person in the room, let the rest of us catch up
occasionally. Pretend it's a group ride where no one gets dropped.

There were also a few things in the threads which heartened me.

Group members stepped in to diffuse the situation, putting themselves in
the line of fire to let everyone sit back down and enjoy the music. Thank
you.

That said, what now?

Will we continue to get teased by the popular social venues into being the
first responder? Having an answer rather than considering a thoughtful
response? Will this group become a value-added buy/sell/trade sheet? Will
we continue to find commonality or seek to contrast only our differences?
Will Timmy hang on to the cracking tree branch over the chasm while Lassie
finds the ranger? Wait. Sorry. Ignore that last line.

My point, as always, is that the quality of this group is up to us. Let's
move forward with a commitment to that idea.

Thanks to everyone for their ongoing contributions to this group.

- Jim

[RBW] Good New/Bad News on my repaired Atlantis

2018-01-06 Thread John G.
The good news: I got my Atlantis back! I won't get into the details, but it
had to go to two different framebuilders to get realigned. It's riding
great now.

The bad news: it came back with a dozen or so new chips in the paint. I'm
not interested in pointing fingers: the frame went between the shop and the
two framebuilders, and it could've happened anywhere (or everywhere). I'm a
little bummed--I'd like all beausage on the frame to come from my own
personal use.

I'll probably get some touch up paint from Waterford, but does anyone have
some Family Secret rust prevention tips in the meantime? I'm the slushy and
salty NYC area, and I STILL haven't put fenders on the bike.

[RBW] Long pull levers slipping around

2018-01-06 Thread Gabriel Hargrove
I'm running Paul Motolites on my Atlantis, as well as, Soma Portola bars
and I am trying to find a compatible long pull aero lever that will stay
put in place! Because of the design of the Tektro RL520 I am finding it
near impossible to clamp on the Portola bars in more than a single
position. The Tektros will slide and settle in one position only- the hook
of the bend. Any other position, despite being torqued to spec, will easily
push out of place. Trying to over torque is beginning to crack the body of
the lever.

The variety of current drop bar long pull levers (preferably aero) on the
market seem limited. The Cane Creek Drop V appears to be my only other
choice if I wish to continue running the Motolites. Any vintage model
levers (I realize these might be non aero) that y'all recommend?

Other notes: Running Paul Cross levers on the tops, hence preference for
aero levers.

Regards,

Gabriel

[RBW] Long pull levers slipping around

2018-01-06 Thread drew
I have motolites with portolas and the tektro levers. I haven’t had any
slipping, as far as I can tell.
One thing I did notice is that the clamp bolt is way back in there and unless
you have a super long Allen wrench, it’s hard to get any torque to really
tighten it down. I think I used a mini cheater bar to extend the the short side
of the Allen wrench a couple of inches.

If it’s not that, You could always take a clamp off of a lever you like and use
that in the tektro instead of the clamp it came withassuming the bolt
threading is the same.

And finally, I think cane creek is tektro rebranded. There is a dia-compe long
pull aero model out there, I believe.

For you Quickbeam-er/SimpleOne-ers out there, I'd love to hear your
recommendations for handlebars that work for you, and why. Also, what stem
length and height you've settled on. I'm gathering that a bar that's a tad
wider than normal works well to help with leverage when out of the saddle.

My use will be 90% on roads or greenways. 10% gravel or packed paths. No

[RBW] Good New/Bad News on my repaired Atlantis

2018-01-06 Thread Bruce d
I've had good success getting touchup paint at a good auto supply store. They
can match also any color, and they mix it on the spot. I've had it done for
several older steel frames and been very satisfied. Not expensive either.

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't own a QB or SO, but I do have 3 ss-ers.

I find that I want the same bars, or close to the same bars, on my dirt
road bikes as on my pavement bikes, and I've tried all sorts of bars but
come back to my favorite, the Maes Parallel, which I have on my 2 Riv Roads
(38 cm) as well as on the dirt road Matthews -- whopping 42 cm wide, for
control in sandy soil; though I find when I ride my Rivs in the same
places, it's far less the narrow bar that makes control awkward as the ~28
mm tires that simply don't track well if the sand is deeper than 1".

My 3d ss-er has the wide (for me) original edition Moustache bar, but
that's because it's a folder, and I want something compact and as close to
2 dimensional as possible that at least distantly resembles a drop bar.

Of course, if you are riding singletrack, then a wider bar is better --
trying technical singletrack on my 42 cm B 135'd Fargo was rather
anxiety-making! But if you are riding flattish, or at least straightish,
dirt and gravel, and the surfaces are firm, I don't see why you'd need a
wider bar ...?

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, I get it -- you mean wider for grunt while standing, not wider for
control. So sorry!

But I have an opinion about that, too! Yes, wider is better, up to a point;
I love the Moustache bar when I stand and climb; but I dislike it for most
other purposes. But as a largely fixed gear rider for 20 years, I find that
my 38s feel just fine when I stand, and I stand a lot, and I like standing
and climbing. (BTW, lest you think I ride a 38 cm c-c frame, the best
fitting flat tt frame I owned was 60 cm c-c. My Rivs with slightly sloping
tts are 57 and 58, c-c.) I'd not choose a ss bar just for comfort when
standing to climb. Really, I don't even think about bar width when I'm out
of the saddle on my Rivs; but I do like the narrowish width when I'm
cruising along with elbows bent and hands are on the ramps or hoods.

bring in a paint sample about 1" square, which I chisel off an

2018-01-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
For the meantime, if that means not much time, you can put on some wax. Or
clear nail polish, but you'll want to steel wool that down a bit before
final touch up if it's glossy. Even if you match the color, the other issue
is depth--put some primer and or a few coats of the touch up so that it
comes out level. The other issue with factory touch up, as opposed to
mixing your own or getting the auto paint custom mixed is that uv rays will
likely have changed the color enough to notice the newer paint in contrast.
I don't usually touch up my bikes, but have done lots of other metal and
wood touch up. And I am about to embark on bike touch up myself. Good luck!

[RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

I love albastache bars on my SO. Perfect for a ss all rounder setup. Wide
enough for good leverage when climbing out of the saddle, comfy, but still
gives you flexibility to get a little lower when you’re working harder. Highly
recommended. Running 100mm technomic. Not sure the height, but bars are at or
just above saddle height.

I have a pair of Nitto Dove bars on my SS that work well. They were a less
expensive, non-bar end compatible option from Riv. I think Nitto calls them the
North Road. I have an extra set and a Tallux stem if you are interested. The
bars and stem are together, have some cloth tape, but have never been used

we can work something out.

I'm on my second Quickbeam and although I have tried a few upright bars, I
always come back to the wide Noodles. I love the comfortable, flat ramps
and multiple hand positions. I *especially* like the leverage I get when
climbing out of the saddle with hands on the hoods, which I find I do quite
often on SS bikes. Whenever I switched to more upright bars, I immediately
missed that sense of leverage/comfort when standing up to climb.

2018-01-06 Thread John A. Bennett
*Many thanks to Jim Edgar!*

As I believe I mentioned here once before: When this group was first
started by Rivendell, Grant and I tried to moderate it, but we fairly
quickly figured out that it was not only too time-consuming to do it well,
but that it was also putting us in the difficult position of playing
policemen with our customers. Not good.

We were ready to close it down when Jim stepped in and said that he'd like
to try his hand. We couldn't have asked for a better person to take it on.

He continues to steer the middle course, even when the waters get choppy.

Much appreciated, Jim.

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey Tom! The New Moustache (AKA Albastache) is a delight to ride singlespeed,
and even more so fixed. I’m not sure why, but ss I mostly rode the curves and
only rode the more upright outter position when cruising. Nothing changed on
the Quickbeam except going to fixed gear and now I ride the outer position most
of the time, except in situations where I may need the front brake or I just
want a change of position.

As for stem height and length, that is so very bike and rider variable that
anyone’s specific numbers may be misleading for what you need, so take my
numbers with a grain of salt. In my case I ride a
supposedly-too-large-for-my-90cm-pbh 66cm Quickbeam, with a 5cm stem and both
seat and stem very low, but essentially even. When I see pictures of bikes from
the late 1800’s and early 1900’s You can see it in action in all my recent
posts starting with my most recent one here:

2018-01-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Congrats, John! When I talked with Mark Nobilette he mentioned that checking
the alignment may cause paint to flake off, both because of where he had to
clamp it and if he needed to shift anything, preparing me for the likely need
of a full repaint. A few thoughts:

— I shifted to Paul canti’s and love them. Well worth it. Don’t forget the moon
thingy/hanger. It’s brilliant, simple and makes set-up and adjustment a breeze.
Paul designed the simple, humble hanger the way I groused it should be as I
tried to adjust them for too many years. They seem pricy ... until they don’t.
Grin.
— I miss my Hunqapillar. Even though I’ve shifted to riding my Quickbeam for
unloaded rides (most of them) and the Hunqapillar for loaded (errands and
bikepacking), There is something about riding a mammoth that’s different than
riding a fast, sentient treebeastie. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-06 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Tom,
I’ve been testing numerous bars on my singlespeeds (not QB/SO but definitely
inspired by those) and most recently found the moustache bar to be “nearly
perfect” for the kind of riding you describe. “Nearly” because I occasionally
wished they were a bit wider and at max stem height they were just below saddle
and I also sometimes wished they were a bit higher. I had considered trying to
obtain an Albastache (wider, less drop, more backsweep) which I think would
have cured all of those occasional desires but I instead just converted to a
Jones 2.5 riser loop 660mm wide that I recently obtained in a trade... this was
not the original plan for the Jones but while already planning to rebuild the
singlespeed for winter fixed mode I decided to give it a try. With a
threadless 90mm riser stem and 2.5” rise of the bar the grips are perfectly
level with saddle and the extra width and sweep felt great on today’s quick
test ride in the snow.

Just prior to the moustache I was running a butterfly/trekking bar with
same 90mm reach stem I used for the moustache. I loved the multi-grip
possibilities of the trekking bar and the 56cm width but struggled to find the
perfect fore/aft position with stems I had available and occasionally struck my
knees on the rearward flat section on out of saddle climbs.

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-06 Thread Christopher Murray
I also have a set of trekking bars in the bin. I think they are Nashbar
branded. I did several unsupported tours with them on my Bike Friday so they
worked but I could never get them out of the “ok” range and into the “works
well” range. It always felt like the low part was where the high part should be
and the high part was where the low part should be. The hand positions are
almost the opposite of Alba’s. That said, people love this type of bars and
I’ve seen and talked to so many people (mostly Europeans) who can’t say enough
good things about them. I would gladly pass them along to anyone who is
interested in trying them.

Cheers!
Chris
