Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-07 Thread Patrick Moore
+ 1. You're not going to make it up a lot of hills with just a wider bar;
you have to adjust your climbing method and tempo and, if you do that, your
regular bar will be just right.

Sure, a wide bar like a Moustache is nice when standing and pulling hard to
grunt up a very steep climb, but this sort of climbing is such that you
won't do it for very many meters, and you'll have to get off and walk after
a relatively short distance. SS/fixed climbing involves learning to stand
and pedal aerobically, and to use your body weight to mash the pedals. That
doesn't require a wider bar.

back to a road drop bar, in ABQ, NM.

[RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-07 Thread Philip Williamson
My favorite bar for many years now on my Quickbeam is the WTB flared dirt drop.
The 58cm Nitto RM-3 is the closest bar I’ve found to that.

My stem is a riser Salsa from the 80’s, maybe 125mm long with a 40* rise from
horizontal. Not an extreme rise. Bars are an inch above saddle height.

I’ve run moustache bars and Salsa Woodchippers on other singlespeeds, and been
pretty happy. I’d say to ride what you like on geared bikes.

2018-01-07 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Tom,
When I first converted to the butterfly bar last year it was replacing a Nitto
dirt drop bar... in this case a RM014... and with my aero levers I did not need
to re-cable and wasn’t sure whether I’d go back to the drops or not so I left
them as is. In fact, the cables could have really been shortened when going
from drop to the butterfly bar with levers positioned similarly to
moustache/albastache so you’ll likely be fine using your brakes/cables as-is.

Lum, the Moon Unit can be adjusted with two hands easily (vs. the six hands
required with the rest). The vertical cable goes into a dimple at the bolt, the
body is treaded for the bolt, so no separate nut, and the bolt is allen, and no
second micro bolt that leaves you scratching your head wondering what you’re

[RBW] Re: Long pull levers slipping around

2018-01-07 Thread Gabriel Hargrove
Drew, you brought up another peccadillo with those RL520's- I'm only able
to get into that clamp bolt with a balldriver T-handle wrench- anything
else binds up or is too short! Don't know why this pair seems to not want
to stay anywhere but the middle of the hook, though... Glad they are
working for you. The design seems (unlike, say, old Campy NR levers) to
touch at the top, bottom, and clamp instead of just at the clamp while
leaving some float between the lever bracket and handlebar.

Andy, the Dia Compe 287V had not come up in my search previously- the
aluminum bracket is a big selling point. I'll keep an eye on that hairline
crack in the bracket body after your experiences. Stay warm out there.

[RBW] FREE STUFF FOR SHIPPING!

2018-01-07 Thread somervillebikes
For the cost of shipping (please no more than one item per person), I am
offering the following:

   - VDO wireless computer with optional cadence sensor. I have three
complete units (computer + speed sensor + cadence sensor + magnets), I had
them on all my bikes until I got a Garmin. Probably will need new batteries.
   - Nashbar clipless pedals. My first foray into clipless. Work fine,
   nothing wrong except scuffing.
   - Mirrcycle mirror (new). For Pre-2009 Shimano STI brifters.
   - Unknown manufacturer chromed steel 1" ball bearing headset, complete.
   Chrome in great shape.
   - Sakae CR 27.2mm seat post, with insertion marks
   - Swiss military bag that I wanted to convert to a small pannier but
never got to it. Straps have been cut off.

Flat rate shipping $10 for each item except the VDO computers and Mirrcycle
for which flat rate shipping is $7.

Contact me off list if interested.

[RBW] Re: FS Baggins Handlebar bag. Choose my adventure. Buy my handlebar bag OR make me buy a rack.

2018-01-07 Thread John G.
I guess it’s going to depend greatly on the Bike, the size of the Bike, and the
load. Here’s my experience:
I use the bag/rack combo on my Mercian Superlight, which is a size 63 and acts
as my Go Fast Roadeo wannabe. The bike has a way huge headtube, and has
been known to shimmy a bit on long, wild descents. It also has very narrow
handlebars.

With the BarSack and a 3-4lb load, the shimmy on descents seems to abate.
Steering is a bit more ponderous, but not so bad that it’s top of mind. Would I
race a crit with the bag? It’s a silly question, but no, I wouldn’t.

Front loads have never bothered me on my Atlantis, FWIW.

[RBW] FS Mark's M1 front rack

2018-01-07 Thread Steve Butcher

Since I'm going the full Clem route for a rack for my Rosco Mixte, I'm
offering for sale my Mark's rack. Included in the offer is the rack with
parts, an Irish strap, and a Nitto #6 left lamp mount. I purchased the
rack new last spring and used it to mount a medium Wald basket in which to
carry my lunch on my commutes to work. The rack is in excellent shape and
has never been damaged. The struts have never been cut; I've only bent
them a bit to fit the rack to the bike. I'm asking $135.00 shipped in
CONUS with preferred payment being PayPal. Please send me a PM with
questions. Thanks for looking, Steve.

How do the F-15/bag combination affect the handling and stability of the
bike? I bought an Acorn bag for my Hunqapillar last year and found that it
turned that platform of stability into a kind of squirrely ride, even to
the point that I could no longer ride hands off.

Re: [RBW] Generator tail light on Longboard Fenders

2018-01-07 Thread Steve Palincsar
I have no experience with the Longboard, but for some years I had a
4D-Lite Plus mounted to a SKS plastic fender: in the usual manner, drill
2 holes, one for the bolt and one for the little "stud".   The generator
was mounted on the front fork, and the wire ran along the top tube and
was glued to the top of the rear fender.

And now that Bill's bag is off to a new home, I may as well use the thread
to put in a plug for the BarSack. I love mine, and it's a great way to

quickly add/remove the rack and bag.

Boy, was that nice to read- I didn't totally follow the posts that led up

as someone mentioned, I appreciate the work that Jim does so that I can
read about bikes, and others can read about and discuss bikes. I feel like

and I enjoy and learn from reading what others write, and it all makes
riding my quickbeam and big dummy all the more enjoyable.

[RBW] Re: Crankypants & Thoughtful Responses

2018-01-07 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Seriously all that John and everybody has said. Jim means the world to me,
I have more respect for him than I can ever utter, and I know most of us
here feel some kind of version of that. He can write me under a tractor,
every sentence, things that I'd stew over and ultimately screw up with
emotion, he delivers like..pancakes at a fundraising breakfast, that's the
image I have (and makes sense to me/my head). Yep, thanks, Jim. You pipe up
perfectly and are so valued.

+1 to the F15 being very solid. I have one that I occasionally use on my

I got the resin version secondhand and it is beyond value.

For those looking to really optimize the cost/effectiveness ration but like

[RBW] Re: Long pull levers slipping around

2018-01-07 Thread ascpgh
I have both the Tektro 520 RL and Dia Compe 287V levers. The Tektros seem
like an update to the of long pull road lever idea that the DC pioneered
They pivot nicer under cable tension and have that ergonomic shaping of the
levers. Good, right?

The resin body of the Tektros breaks easier than I would expect I've had
two crack up the front middle, splaying open and drop the lever pivot out
of its holes. That means no brakes. The resin body supports the pivot axle
of the lever at its ends, the first thing to hit when the bike goes down.

I've done it twice, one was an honest failure as I did really pile up on it
and it was obviously broken. The other was not some catastrophic hit, the
biggest impact was from the bike falling over when someone bumped it while
it was leaned along a brick planter on a sidewalk. Discovered when the
lever suddenly met the bar while in use with no stopping power produced.

The higher priced TRP and Cane Creek levers seem to use the same resin body
which I do not see as an improvement over my DC 287Vs with their old school
body and lever design on an aluminum body using a pivot between the two
edges of the rolled lever shape, which actually hold the pretty large pivot
axle.

I'm game to try some price-appropriate aero road levers that have anything
but the resin body supporting the lever pivot common among the Tektro, TRP
and Cane Creek offerings. The 287v is an option but pricing and
availability is going against them.

Enough avoidance, it's time to get geared up ride to work. It's -10°F with
nice 5 MPH wind.
