[RBW] Re: Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-19 Thread Fullylugged
I rode my blue Ram on 30+ miles of gravel (out of a 54 mile ride) a few weeks
ago, on Panaracer 1 1/2" tires. I had too much air in them for gravel, but the
bike was still fine.

[RBW] Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-19 Thread David Carner
I removed the fenders from my Road Standard early this year after getting
frustrated with some noise issues. Two weeks ago I participated in an organized
ride, choosing the metric century option. With no fenders and warm temperatures
I decided not to bother with rain gear in spite of the 100% chance of rain. I
did take care to protect my leather saddle, top and bottom. The first 5 miles
took place through a downpour. It then slacked off to a drizzle and actually
stopped by mile 25, but shortly later resumed a steady rain for the duration. I
did not notice any road spray from my front wheel reaching my face, although I
did get some from the rooster tails of those in front. I keep a small Caradice
bag behind the saddle with a spare tube and tire repair kit in it. It has
zipper and flap with snaps. At the 40 Mille rest stop I happened to bump the
bag and water squirted out of a vent hole. The bag was full of water. Since
very little rain was hitting the bag from above, I assume spray from the back
wheel was forcing water under the flap and through the zipper, which was closed.

[RBW] RIV Catalog Arrived

2018-05-19 Thread Matt Beecher
My wife said she threw out some “junk” catalogs that were in the mail. :(
Although I am unlikely to buy another big purchase from Riv, I am hoping they
pack a catalog in with my 650b Atlantis. I was excited to look through it.

Since I have not seen anyone comment on when the new frames will ship, I was
told they will ship late next week. I think the last of my parts should arrive
by then.

For those that were hoping for more coffee mugs, i inquired again in an email
last week. I was told they might get some this winter. I wish I could reserve
2-3 if it would help to secure the deal.

Matt in Oswego, IL.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam: favorite tires?

2018-05-19 Thread JohnS
I'm on my second pair of Little Big Ben's from Riv. Wear well, rarely get
flats, good grip in the rain and have the reflective side wall. Supple they
are not, so I tend to pump them up to 60psi to compensate. I use my QB as
my commuter in and out of Baltimore, there's a lot of broken glass on my 10
mile commute. I have the supple light weight tires on my road bikes which
don't have to deal with the mean streets of the city.

[RBW] Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-19 Thread Joe Bernard
You could go minimalist with Woody's Chop Chort wood fenders. The size, shape
and tire clearance pretty much eliminates any concerns about a fender getting
jammed and locking a wheel. They don't do a whole lotta fending, but the major
spray on DT and bottom-of-bag is interrupted.

If you zoom you'll note the fork-mounted dyno-light. Mine's not big enough to
drop to the tire, but if it somehow did it would just skip off the top of it.
There's nothing in front for the spinning wheel to jam it into.

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-19 Thread Abcyclehank
Kelly,
Long time no talk. Feel free to call if you want more details.
I had a 66cm Bike Friday briefly and was surprised at the ride for riders our
size. I second that the tire size (width) makes a difference when trying to
calm the steering a bit. Mine accelerated brilliantly and would have been a
good fit for your intended purpose.
Although I adapted well to the ride and don’t see that being an issue for you.
My wife did not like the look of me riding it. Her being a non cyclist at the
time; thought I looked like a “bear on a tricycle” (6’6” 240lbs) and questioned
why I was not riding my “normal” bikes (74cm Bombadil or 68cm Quickbeam. Not
that others opinions would significantly affect you nor I. Nothing better than
tightening up a Tilly for protection and riding off.

Now regarding the Bike Friday Tandem I would not pull the trigger without
riding one first although they do hold used value and you could flip/resell
easily. Most who rave about them to my knowledge are not our size and ride
them frequently with children and/or as introduction to Tandems.
I know you have evolved away from Rivendell but you might want to try their
tandem. My wife wants to ride ours weekly and it is 100% better (more
enjoyable) than the Jumbo Cannondales we each owned in the past.
I consider mine custom-like and it is so dialed in we will never part with it.
Grant’s willingness to add a size for us outliers is something I will be
forever grateful for and what makes him and RBW special.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

I actually happened to ask Vince about this yesterday (not the color part, but

Re: [RBW] Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-19 Thread iamkeith
I use fenders mostly because of the protection they provide to the bike, which
is why all my Rivs other than the quickbeam have them. I treat them as more
precious than Grant & Co. would like me to.

As you say, I get drenched no matter what if its raining - but that's actually
fairly rare in my climate and rarer yet that I ride in it. A rack with a solid
deck or a rear bag can help prevent the worst of the back stripe from the
rooster tail, and i suppose a clip-on down tube splash guard like Deacon
Patrick showed could even fit INSIDE a bag for occasional use, for a bike

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-19 Thread Eric Douglas

As to the handing of small wheeled folding bikes, I find that tire width
make a huge difference.

I have Schwalbe Big Apple 20 x 2.15 tires on both my Bike Friday Llama and
Swift Folder. No problems at all doing a week long tour or a century on
the Llama.

Both bikes came with more narrow tires, and the handling suffered. As far
as I can tell, the wider tires stabllize the steering,

[RBW] FS: Silver hubs, Pass & Stow rack, Bianchi bike

2018-05-19 Thread ian m
Some Riv content and Riv adjacent content:

26" wheelset with prototype Silver hubs and Mavic SUP ceramic rims $250

Rims and hubs purchased at Riv garage sale some years ago. I think hubs are
rebranded Velocity? Rims 559x21. Great wheelset that will last a lifetime,
I wish my Clem was built for 26"

Pass & Stow rack $225

Here it is on 650b Clem. May fit 700c if fork has top eyelets, not sure.
Great shape, probably indestructible.

1993 Bianchi Project 5 $425

Cool bike. Lugged steel, Cunningham inspired dirt drops, kinda Rivish?
17.5" frame. Probably a long shot. More info here:

https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/bik/6592924421.html

All prices negotiable but I am not pressured to sell. Shipping not
included.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Patrick FWIW, back when I had my Race Lite, I combined off-the-shelf
"motocross-style" f and r fenders* with ~5" strips of stiff, black plastic
zip tied to bottom of down tube and rear of seat tube, in effect continuing
coverage for the vestigial commercial fenders. Of course, this didn't work
as well as full Honjos, but it kept a great deal more mud off of me and the
bike than just the "moto-x" fenders.

* Much like these. I see that this bike also has a second rear fender under
the seatpost-mounted one; my plastic did similar duty.

[RBW] Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-19 Thread Lum Gim Fong
>From time to time I get the urge to drop the fenders/front rack and just
ride, wheels free, with a saddle bag (Banana sax nowadays?)and attach me
dino-light onto me front brake assembly.
I commute 20-30 miles round-trip when I commute. Roads only.
With wide DT carbonicbike I used to have I could get away with no spray in
the face. The DT would block it.
How do the Rivbikes with skinnier DT fare in the rain? Spray in the face?
Or no big deal?

I mean, anything heavier than a light rain and I get utterly drenched
anyway, even with my correctly, neurotically mounted Honjos and nice J
rain gear.
That stuff works great in light rains. But I get soaked to the bone in
anything heavier anyway. Sometimes I feel anxious about the risk of
rack/fender failures, so I check them to keep everything snugged up.
Maybe I will keep the Bleriot the armoured vehicle and the Rambouillet the
slimmed down bike and just see how it goes when I get caught on the
Rambouillet in the rain.

One thing I love about fenders is I only get hit by falling, clean rain,
and not from any nastiness on the road surface. That is a big plus.

Fenderless safety question:
If a front brake mounted edeluxe drops onto your unfendered front wheel,
will it stop the wheel, or just ride on top of it and not be a danger?

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.

Compass Barlow Pass (38's) under SKS fenders on an older Quickbeam..
plenty of room and really made commuting on that bike super enjoyable.
the only issue I ever had with the Barlow Pass extra lights was getting a
piece of glass embedded in the tire once and it caused a cut in the tread,
but I continued (and continue) to ride those tires.
No issue and no flats.

I'm thinking about these. I have the same complaints about the original
Alba--too narrow and too straight back--so this looks like a good direction.

no specific recommendation here, but showing how I used Tubus LM-1 clamps
on a unicrown fork to mount a Mark's rack, on a CX bike with no holes or
bosses for anything.

with your traditional crown fork, and this rack mount is probably more
versatile, but you asked for creative.

[RBW] Quickbeam: favorite tires?

2018-05-19 Thread J Edward
I wore a few sets of Ruffy Tuffies to the casing on my Quickbeam, great tires.
But it looks like they’re not around anymore. It might be apples to oranges but
I’m running some wide 650b Gravelkings on my Clem and love them so much that’d
I’d get a set of them for a 700c bike in a heartbeat, so I second the above
recommendation!

[RBW] Quickbeam: favorite tires?

2018-05-19 Thread A. Douglas M.
I liked the Voyageur Hypers in 38. They’re slick, so I’d lose traction going
uphill in gravel or dirt. They have an excellent ride on flat gravel or
smoother surfaces. They were also less than $20/tire. For rougher trails I’d
like to try the gravel King’s or Steilacoom tubeless. I always end up riding
mostly paved or dirt roads, though.
