[RBW] FS: Albatross Cockpit w/ Paul Levers, Silver Shifters

2018-06-30 Thread Birdman

Hi all,

I’m parting with this gorgeous, gently used Albatross Cockpit. I could part it
out, but it’s so beautiful that I’d like to try to sell it complete first.

Heat treated Albatross Bars
120mm Deluxe stem
Paul Canti Levera
Silver Shifters (including pieces to convert to DT shifters)
Amber shellacked cork grips and yellow cloth tape

This cockpit was on a 65cm Atlantis for about a month’s worth of use before I
switched back to noodles. There should be plenty of length in cable housing for
most bikes. A couple of marks here and there but in very nice shape overall.

I’m asking $250 plus shipping

Re: [RBW] Socketed Seat Lug on a Hunqapillar

2018-06-30 Thread iamkeith
Only asking this because I'm naturally curious about and interested in such
things - not such use I have any actual experience:

A fillet joint wouldn't really be the alternative here, would it? I
thought the alternative was the "spoons" type connection, where a shaped
piece is socketed into the top of the stay, and then that piece is brazed
to the side of the seat tube/top tube cluster. And I thought that the
brass (or silver?) brazing material provided ALL of the strength in that
type of connection, where the seat stay is basically in compression. Grant
once made a comment about "understanding shear forces" in discussing the
new ball sockets so I thought that, in addition to streamlining
construction techniques, he was trying to eliminate the shear forces that
would otherwise occur through the brazing filler material.

Wouldn't a fillet joint be more accurate in a case where the stays butt
into the back of the seat tube? Mountain bikes usually have this, but then
they bend outward to allow for more tire clearance. My old MB-1 has this
condition, even where the rest of the bike is lugged. I don't think I've
ever seen a Rivendell use that detail though.

I personally think the original Clem Smith Jr. sockets (originally intended
for the "tall bike" project) are by far the nicest connection looking
ever. But there's no way to adjust the angle for different size frames
obviously, without having multiple castings. Maybe now that Riv is moving
toward proportional chainstay lengths it could work?

[RBW] FS: 29er/700C wheelset - xt hubs, mavic rims, 36h, silver. And new Maxxis Ikons

2018-06-30 Thread adam leibow
Hello! As the title states, I'm selling a Rivvy 29er/700c wheelset. I
bought it used and it has lived on my Hunqapillar and Sam Hillborne.

*spec's are as follows:*
- 622mm BSD (700c or 29er)
- XT HB-M760 hubs - quick release, 100F, 135R OLD spacing
- Mavic A719 Rims (very similar profile & width as Atlas or Synergy on
Riv-standard wheelsets)
- 36h front and rear
- DT straight gauge spokes.

I think that's it, am I forgetting anything? The rear bearings *are *a
little notchy and slow when you spin them with your fingers, but not really
noticeable when riding. Front bearings spin great.

I also have a set of 29er Maxxis IKON 2.4"ers in black sidewall. they are
the 120tpi tubeless ready version (nice). They have under 10 soft dirt
miles on them and are virtually brand new except some dirt.

Price for wheels alone = $120, price for wheels & tires = $200. Local
pickup in SF (either Soma or Ocean Beach). Otherwise, please add actual
shipping if you need them shipped.

Please text me (3IO) nine sixz three - sizx nien 59. If you direct email me
i won't see it.

Thanks!!!
Adam

Would prefer a device that has a removable "wand" with a small bracket that

Has anyone used this? Will it clamp to a fattish seat or chain stay?

[RBW] Re: I got a new Clem!

2018-06-30 Thread Joe Bernard
Tom, it's a great color that is just about impossible to show accurately on
computer/phone screens. It doesn't even stay the same from living room to
outside the front door..inside there's a ton of green showing, then the sun
hits and all this yellow pops out! It's a great color that Riv doesn't look to
be doing again, so get it now if you find one.

My "normal size" for a not-very-sloping toptube is in the 53-55cm range, but I
seem to like crazy long toptubes for pullback bars. With Rivs I think that's
the place to look; don't even think about the seattube as long as the saddle
isn't completely slammed. My pbh is 79-80 (I've never done a super accurate
measurement) and I ride with regular running shoes so add a little height
there. The reach with Boscos is bolt-upright even after dropping it since
taking those shots, but it feels mellow and cool on this frame. I'll probably
be inclined to cut an inch off, but I'm going to resist that a while and use
the different hand positions available. Gripping in one spot all day is a habit
I'm trying to break.

Oh, another reach comparison, I have a 55 Cheviot with chopped Boscos. It has a
bit shorter cockpit, as befits that it's more of a country/road bike; Clem is a
mountain bike.

The Velo-Orange saddle came with the bike and I know nothing about it. The plan
is to put my ti B17 on, but for the short ride I did yesterday the V-O was
pretty nice! I was surprised, I'm notoriously finicky about saddles.

[RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica X series saddles

2018-06-30 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I wanted to mention to not over tighten the leather. *Tighten it just
enough to take out the slack*. My tension bolt would loosen on it's own,
as there wasn't enough leather tension to keep the bolt from unwinding. I
used blue Locktite on the nose bolts, and tensioned them just enough to
take the slack out. You sit *'in it'* more than a Brooks, more like a
hammock. Tension and tilt are a bit finicky to get right, but when you do,
experience butt bliss. Beware of over tightening, and adjust when the
leather is cold and it should last a long time. My heaviest use saddle is
going on four years old and I have years (of tension bolt length) left.

Re: [RBW] Socketed Seat Lug on a Hunqapillar

I would think that the socketed seat cluster would be stronger and heavier.
There is quite a bit more surface area for the brass/silver to adhere to,
in the sockets and on the ball.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wool at 100*+

2018-06-30 Thread Patrick Moore
I've tried riding in woven, structured shirts, and dislike both aspects --
I find the woven cloth less comfortable than knit, and they bind when I
lean forward on shoulders, armpits, and neck. The exception are my Hawaiian
shirts, which I deliberately wear large, when they are not tucked in, but
then I dislike the flapping in the inevitable wind. It's knits and stretch
for me.

I found a wonderful, new Pendleton wool shirt in the thrift store and
thought it might be just the thing for cool weather riding; nope, shoulders
tight, sleeves rode up, neck restricted, so I reluctantly gave it away.

Too bad that the RUSA jersey is special order (and I'd be out of place
wearing one anyway, rather like wearing a World Champion jersey).

Re: [RBW] Socketed Seat Lug on a Hunqapillar

2018-06-30 Thread hugh flynn
I would argue the sockets make cutting the tubes easier and faster
(straight cut vs miters), allow the stays to be wider apart to accommodate
wider tires without bending/shaping, and as Peter notes assemble more
quickly via brazing vs filet. In other words, I suspect the lug caps
accommodate quicker/less error prone assembly. I don’t know that the
objective is a stronger joint although that could well be a benefit of this
method.

Re: [RBW] Socketed Seat Lug on a Hunqapillar

It's easier to get a fillet wrong. I got one wrong when I was building
frames 20 years ago and it cracked. If you get the fillet right it can be
lighter and more attractive. But if I were designing a frame to be
inexpensive to make and strong, I'd forget about using fillets.
