[RBW] Re: Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam
Cavedale is pretty rough road at times, Looks so different in the after-the-fire landscape. Great for 37mm or wider tires. Trinity is much better pavement but has some steep climbs (and fun descents). If you’re coming from the Glen Ellen side you can loop Trinity and Cavedale from one side of Glen Ellen to the other. Or you can take Trinity from north Glen Ellen over into Napa (via Oakville Grade, Dry Creek, or Mr. Veeder roads ... Veeder is definitely the hard way). You’ll see very few cars (but they may also be surprised to see you) which is my favorite part. Lots of different ways to ride over that mountain, it’s really beautiful up there right now, lots of creeks and mini waterfalls and clear skies after the rain. Also, Bothe / Napa State Park has a great bike in campsite just south of Calistoga. Abe On Monday, 14 January 2019 20:07:34 UTC-8, Philip Williamson wrote: > That looks great. Re: [RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
Patrick asks what frames preceded the Roadini. Other than the 1984 Trek 620, which was a nice bike and just didn't fit well, they were a Peugeot UO-8, a cheap knockoff of a Raleigh mixte and another cheap diamond frame 10-speed (don't remember the brand). What makes the Roadini work is the tall head tube so I can get the handlebars up where I want them, adequate standover and no toe overlap. Also it's the choice of parts that work for me: low q crank, low gearing, brake levers for small hands, good women's saddle, short reach handlebars. The handling feels a lot like my former Trek 620 and is just fine. This thread is supposed to be all positive so I will not mention what I do not like about the bike and the Rivendell philosophy of fit, but I am not going to buy a custom frame and for a production bike the Roadini is great and definitely the best bike I have owned. [RBW] Re: Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”
ive had 29+/3" tires on a mountain bike before, and i've had plenty of knobbies in the 2.1-2.3 range. There is something special that happens around the 2.8 range (with wide rims) where the tire becomes more "dreamy" and floats over thick roots and rocks exponentially better than a 2.1ish tire (where, IME, you still feel a good amount of the obstacle as you roll over it). I don't know if you'd feel this sensation with a 3incher on a narrow rim-brake compatible rim. i was using 40mm wide rims with my 29x3" tires, and this definitely added to the magic. Tubeless also adds to the magic. this being said, i think 3" is overkill for much terrain, and IME you do lose speed on the road (or just flatter, simpler dirt) with so much beef to your tire. for me it would come down to the exact terrain i'm planning to ride, and this would determine my tire choice. if you can handle the slower speed of the 3incher, the fun will make up for it in spades. -a On Friday, January 11, 2019 at 2:08:03 PM UTC-8, Deacon Patrick wrote: > > I’m toying with the idea of a Boots (fixed gear version). Re: [RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
Well, thanks for this thread. It's pretty easy to make this positive. I owe Grant and Riv a lot and would like to thank them. I "discovered" Rivendell in about 1998, when my friend Bradford Rex (aka The Reverend Mookie) gave me a Rivendell Catalog. I'd ridden a lot in college and grad school (70's and 80's), but fell away cycling for a numbert of years, too busy to ride and uninterested in the new bikes, new materials, new technology. Brad showed me the catalog, with pics of good steel bikes and riders in floppy cotton shirts. My ship had finally returned to port... I drove down to Walnut Creek, bought some wool shorts, and ordered a Heron. Remember I got some fat tires (maybe Rolly Polly's) for my Jack Taylor and one of my Paramounts. My love for cycling came back, and for the last 20 years I've enjoyed life with my Rivendells. Not sure how many I have, maybe six or seven. Maybe more, I don't actually keep track. I don't like to post stuff that sounds dramatic, or make my experience sound special. But I will say the oncology dudes and cardiology dudes say it's a good thing that I've biked so much over the years. I truly thank Grant for that inspiration, for the bikes, and for my health. My story isn't unique or special, but the bikes sure are... some are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/albums cheers Max Beach Santa Rosa CA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I'm not Bill, but I still have my '92 XO-1, and idiosyncratic though she may be, I still can't quit her. Have I wished for 700C? Yep. Have I wished for bigger 26" clearance? Yep. Have I wished for a little less twitch up front? Yep. Would I change anything? Nope. She's had every handlebar known to man, and while they're all weird at first, they all work out eventually. If the '92 XO-1 excels at anything, it's fast 'n fun commuting, or maybe often sketchy but always fun underbiking. I agree with Bill and Joe, that a 56 Atlantis will do everything I am looking for, except be a 56cm Bombadil. I am planning on getting either a 59 or a 56 Atlantis, and am leaning towards the 59 (love the curvy tube) I still really want a 56 bombadil, and am willing to wait. FWIW I have a 60 Bombadil, 58 Hunqapillar, 59 Clem L, and an older 61 Atlantis, so it’s not like I’m lacking mountainy bikes to ride. Bottom line: I want a 56 Bombadil and a MIT Atlantis. Re: [RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
Bill: what did you think of the XO-1? Or, what do you now think of the XO-1 after riding so many Rivendells? I owned, loved, and put many, many miles on a '92 myself, and when I ordered my first 26' wheel road custom, I asked Grant: Can you make it as good as the XO-1?" He answered, "Oh, much better," and so it proved. In fact, my first custom was sorta-kinda based on the All Rounder, but with geometry tweaked for road, and full road tubing and lugs. The XO--1 was very clearly an idea and product at the beginning of a process. Riv's road models and all road models are now much, much better -- as good as the XO-1 was in its day. I guess I've been a fan of Grant's bikes and since when I sold Bridgestone bikes as an employee of Bay Area shops Wheelsmith and the Bicycle Outfitter back in the 80's. I've accumulated some great stuff from Riv over the years, bikes, racks and bags (Carradice saddle bag, then Baggins Bags, Sackville), and plenty of wool. First Bridgestone was a 1992 X0-1, which I just gave to my son-in-law to use. Tons of commute miles and touring on that one. Second Bridgestone was an X0-5, bought for $99 on Bridgestone USA's last day of business. This was a great commuter when I was in grad school. First Riv was a Quickbeam from the first production run, now set up with an S3X fixed 3sp hub. I may need to find a home for this, as it's less practical for my needs / geography these days. But what a sweet ride Second Riv was a Romulus, which I broke but had repaired. This is now my only bike without racks and fenders, set up with NOS parts for L'Eroica CA. This is my only non-commuting bike. Third Riv was an A. Homer Hilsen, which I got while the Romulus was being repaired. Fourth Riv was a gray Hunqapillar from the first production run. This one has more miles than any of the others, and is my everyday go-to commuter and load hauler. Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”
I was giving your question some thought and although I've never ridden mtb fixed, I have ridden about 2,000 miles of trail on my 29+ over the past couple years. One thing I've noticed with 29+ is that holding momentum is key. I've found that you've got to accelerate earlier and with more effort through corners and up and down the rollers in order to hold your speed on the flats. Although it feel like more work at times, it kinda evens out because those big wheels carry the momentum well since they aren't hampered as much by rolling over roots and rocks. The way I ride is that I hammer at the top of rollers and just kinda steamroll though any trail chatter, mongolian stlye, in order to get me up the other side. We've got a lot or rollers and short/intense climbs here where I ride. the same goes with rockgardens and root bunches, I just point 'n shoot and unweight my bike as much as possible and try to let let the tires do the work. I'm not sure you'd be able to do that in quite the same way while riding fixed, is that right? So what I trying to say, is that those techniques that I use that seem to make 29+ work for me, all involve coasting! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
I love this thread because it provides opportunity for me to tell my Riv story! I started riding as an adult in 2006. This was an era when yellow bracelets and TdF glory (and cheating) heavily dominated American cycling culture. My older brother convinced me to buy a road bike so I could get into group rides and pretend I was in the pro peleton. This is not quite how he put it but that was the extent of what I was doing. My first bike was a too expensive aluminum drop bar road bike. After riding that bike for a year or two I decided it was uncomfortable (surprise!) Next I convinced myself that I needed a full carbon fiber frame so as to eliminate any excessive road vibration besides it would be a full 1/2 pound lighter then my original bike. As funny as that sounds that was the common advice back then. I purchased a Trek Madone which turned out to be the most sketchy, twitchy and uncomfortable bike I had ever owned. My rationale at the time was if it was good enough for Lance it must be good enough for me. Boy, was my thinking backwards! I crashed that bike into a guardrails on an overpass breaking my ribs and separating my shoulder. After the debacle with the Trek I somehow became convinced that I needed a custom frame to finally get the comfortable ride that I had been seeking. Wrong! Even though the custom steel Gunnar was better I was still uncomfortable on it. After one more carbon road bike purchased I sold that bike for a Rivendell. I had first heard about Riv back around 2009 when I read the "shoe ruse". The concept of riding in regular shoes and clothes really resonated with me. That said it took me until 2016 to act on it when I purchased my complete drop bar Sam. Mine is a 62 with the 2TT. The self proclaimed purist in initially would not allow myself to become comfortable with the appearance of an extra top tube. That changed once I started riding the bike and saw how handy that extra TT can be when lifting the bike into the work stand with my frame pump still attached. It wasn't love at first sight however. I took me 5 cockpit changes until I finally settled on Albatross bars. The biggest road block to finding comfort was my ego. That Sam is now my most endearing bike. I will never sell it. I have since picked up an Appaloosa to serve as my dedicated touring bike, my grocery getter, my multi use riding do it all bike. That said, the Sam will always be a favorite of mine. I have the desire to own many more Rivs but I have learned to practice contentment. That said, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to own an Atlantis or a Hunqapillar. I am thankful to Riv for changing my bike life for the better. I plan on supporting them whenever I can for many years to come. [RBW] Re: OT- Death Valley on foot
The Cottonwood Canyon - Marble Canyon loop seems an obvious candidate...2-3 nights with water sources. Access is via the road out past the air strip from Stovepipe Wells. That road might be a bit dicey in a rental...there is some soft sand for a few miles, and some washboard...but I've seen all manner of cars get through there. Worst case, you could thumb a ride into the canyon...always lots of friendly folks coming and going. I've also heard that Fall Canyon has some nice camping...accessed from the parking lot at the exit from Titus Canyon. [RBW] Re: Shoes for rambling.
Hi John, I did install the Catalyst Pedals yesterday and went for an hour or so ride in the brisk north wind and temps in the mid twenty's (f). Here are my first impressions... They are luxurious compared to anything else I have used, Larger than the VO - Clems or gripsters. The best analogy I can make is a classic touring pedal is to a motorcycle foot peg as the Catalyst pedal is to the floorboards on a Harley. The Catalyst is very grippy due to so many studs, there is no way you are slipping on them. I found that I wanted to slide my saddle forward a bit to accommodate for my foot being centered on the pedal (your heel and the ball of your foot are centered over the axel), I did not move the saddle as I need more miles. I found that I could climb out of the saddle without my foot hurting and I felt like I could put the power down, I have been cautious since the foot flared up. I got back home and my foot felt great for what that's worth. I have never owned a pair of the Lambda pedals, so I am not sure how they compare. I do ride the gripsters, I think they are great and the clem pedals are far and away the greatest value. That's very nice. What frames made up the predecessors to the Roadini? And how -- in fit, handling, other ways -- is the Roadini superior to them? It's been so long that I can't remember clearly, but I think I learned about Grant in the early 90s during the Bridgestone USA days, from the ads, and joined the original boblist (mail, not internet) a few years later, about 1994. I bought a 1992 XO-1 a year out of date, so that sounds right; I set the XO-1 up as a 26" wheel road bike, and it worked well, better on road than off road, IME. I was on the mailing list for the new Rivendell company and ordered a 26" wheel Waterford road custom in 1994, which was delivered early 95. I ordered 2 more in subsequent years (small wheels not for fit but because I had, and still have to a degree) a liking for small road wheels). Later still I owned a canti Sam and a blue Ram. Left are the 2 later customs. On my "maybe on day, God willing" list is to try a Roadeo and a Clem or one of those long stayed bikes that do well on dirt. [RBW] Re: Silver Legolas on the blug
My understanding is that the Legolas was really one of the rarest bikes which has continued in the lineup. It was never a big production run, and even back when they announced it, I don't think they built more than a couple dozen. It was more or less the development of the original CX bike (very rare) and Mark's custom which he used for cross racing (there's a pretty serious cx contingent around the greater SF Bay Area). They were mostly '05 - '06 production. And not many of them. When I ended up with a Hilsen back in aught nine, I had thoughts of getting a Legolas. But even then it was more or less custom order only. I don't even think Keven's bike was technical a Legolas. I think it would take a group effort to bring a size run of them in. Otherwise you would be looking at a custom order. You can do much, much worse than having Mark Nobilette build your frame for you. And that design by GP is solid. It's a thing of beauty in my book. [RBW] Re: An LBS success story for a change: Blue Heron Bikes
I echo the thumbs up (if that’s possible) for Blue Heron! I too order whatever I can through Rob and am really happy to hear of his expansion. The shop is ideally placed next to a cafe, at the Ohlone Greenway, an outdoor beer garden and numerouse grocery stores. I’d love to curate an outdoor bike+skateboard movies-in-the-parking-lot series outside the back of Blue Heron, I mentioned the idea to Rob sometime ago, but haven’t gotten organized on this quite yet. I have no illusion that my not giving business to Amazon and other (lesser) big box corporations makes a dent in their domanance, but I do think that if one feels that bikeshops and the local community they’re a part of is meaningful, then it’s important to support them. Great shop, and an ever better place to work. Rob is awesome, +1 They are also Compass (Rene Herse?) dealers too, though I bought the last Barlow Pass so expect to see new tires on the shelf soon. [RBW] Shoes for rambling.
my go-to is birkenstock - good support, especially for my high arches, and the right amount of stiffness. the standard foam outsoles can get torn up by pedals relatively quickly (though they still function fine), but they grip pretty well. but if rain and/or walking/hiking are part of the outing in addition to the riding, i’m also in the blundstone camp. they’re great for about everything. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
