Not that is has anything to do with anything, but I went to the NAHBS when
it was in Denver and I talked to this "kid" (anyone under 29 qualifying)
and he had been making frames for friends in the UK. There he was in
England, but he read about the NAHBS show, and well, he decided he was to
going to make the best frame and bike he knew how, and he was going to that
show. And he did! And his bike was really well done and thought out. And
it was so cool he had done that. I am pretty sure he rode that bike to the
show from wherever he was staying in Denver, wiping it down before putting
it up on the table with, I think, a borrowed stand. He did not have cab
fare or whatever but he did have his bike. So cool... Still makes me
smile.

And it turns out he is still out there making bikes! Shed6 Cycles, as he
originally rented a storage shed to start building, and it was #6...
https://www.shed6cycles.com

So, yeah, meeting people like that just has to help and make one smile,
anyone loving bikes, riding, adventures, all of that anyway.

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-05 Thread John G.
Man, I am worn out by the “bike xyz is overbuilt” conversation. It feels like
people have completely lost sight of other things that make a bike delightful
to ride. My Atlantis was around 29 pounds and a bit heavy on climbs, but its
handling and manners couldn’t be beat. Sure, I was about 1 mph slower on it
than my other bikes, but holy moly that matters way less than feeling good on a
long ride.

I miss that bike. Wish I had never sold it. Was foolishly chasing down the
“rides light” phantom.

[RBW] Lever effect of stem length et al on steering and handling

2019-02-05 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
There seem to be three factors involved in the question (but correct me where
I’m wrong, physics folks!):

1. Stem length
2. Bar width
3. distance of grip from in-front or behind stem bolt (I’m least certain of
this of the three).

Stem length: presuming steering from the stem, without bars, as stem length
forward from the stem bolt increases, less pressure but greater distance is
required to turn the handlebars.

Bar width: as bars widen, leverage increases each direction, also requiring
less effort but greater distance to steer.

How do these two interact with each other? And does #3 above play any role?
(yes, I’m ignoring the rabbit hole of trail, head tube angle, and no doubt
other things, but Rivendells are generally in a similar camp in those areas, so
that is the focus of my question).

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Floor Living

2019-02-05 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
So many definitions and specifics to every situation, but I’ve found for
myself, my family, and the folks I’ve worked with that any bodily transition,
including to floor living, going barefoot, diet, etc., takes three months of
doing it full time before it feels like a “new normal” vs. “I’m transitioning.”
The shifts and strengthening continue, with marked milestones around one and
three years. After that, it’s just ongoing, subtle learning rather than
paridigm shifts.

I agree. Anybody who thinks the Wavie is a copy of a Fleegle, or a Mary,

This is the first time I've purchased a frame and spec'd a build and it was a ton of fun. This essentially replaces a surly LHT that was a fine bike but also is a tank and I have no plans for a tour. The homer is the bike that drew me to Riv a few years ago, so I jumped at the chance for a more budget friendly version. The AHH splits commuting duties with an Elephant NFE and the ride between the two bikes could not be more different, but they compliment each other very well. My commute is between 8.5-9 miles one way and fairly hilly depending on the route I take. The AHH climbs well enough and I feel very confident bombing hills on it. I usually carry a change of clothes, lunch, coffee, and some tools. Maybe an extra layer depending on the day. I think on the Blug once Grant said he doesn't think a road-ish bike could ride any better than the MIT AHH and I'm inclined to agree. The bike is so smooth. I can barely feel a loaded up sackville on the back and it's not even cinched to the rack. Although I am careful not to overload the front basket or else the handling can be influenced in a way I don't care for. Partial build list:Brakes: tektro r559Brake levers: TRP RRL SRShifters: Shimano bar endCrankset: Velo Orange 46/30Rear Cassette: 8 sp 11-34Rims: velocity dyad machine builtHub: Shimano LX, dyno on frontTires: Compass loup loup pass 38mmHandle bars: Nitto RandoStem: Nitto technomic 90mmSaddle: Brooks B-17 (8 year old one I had lying around)pedals: shimano a530Fenders: SKS P55Cages: King cage & arundel looney binFront light: schmidt edelux ii (bought from riv)Rear light: toplight (i think? i wasn't to picky hear and the bike shop hooked it up)Front rack: mark's rackRear rack: pletscherRear bag: sackville mediumNot great iphone pics->Other thoughts:Sizing - This is a 58. I measure my pbh at 87 which is right in the middle on the size chart. It fits and I'm comfortable. That being said I probably could have gone with a 54.5 frame just as well.Handle bars - the Nitto rando has a ton of positions and is generally fine but I think the reach is just a hair long for me. I'll eventually probably swap them out for something more compact, but I don't think I'll go full upright yet. Tires - compass loup loups roll well but I've averaged a flat about every 3 weeks (more than once to a dinky little piece of wire). They are really the only thing i wish i'd spec'd differently on the original build. I'm swapping them out for some panaracer paselas on Will's advice. Hopefully these will be beefier.Brakes - levers are sweet, plenty of stopping power. I get disc brakes (my NFE has them) but in my [limted] practical experience they can be a pain. I might swap out for some pauls at some point just because i like the way pauls look not for lack of performance from the tektrosSackville medium - is awesome. I've commuted in pouring rain and stuff inside has stayed dry. There's plenty of room for my daily ride especially coupled with the front basket. I use a outershell foldable backpack as a stuff sack of sorts as the sackville stays on the bike.Aesthetics - The color is so nice in person, the web pics don't do it justice. I like, from a purely visual perspective, bikes with a flat Tt and shorter chainstays like the original Homer. But this bike still looks great and you can't argue with the ride quality.Saddle - replaced the old worn B17 with a Berthoud aspin. I couldn't get the tension on the B17 tight enough so it was time. It's a total cliche but this bike is versatile and so practical. I could see myself riding a century on it no problem or also loading it up for a s24o. I honestly don't understand why you don't see more talk about it on the group.

Re: [RBW] Floor Living

2019-02-05 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Maybe not, Joe. Others can decide. I bow to their decision. I believe it is on
topic to riding, at least for people who use core muscles. Many of the
challenges people experience with back and handlebars and other bits relate to
core strength. I’m pretty sure Grant has commented that we aren’t supposed to
put a lot of weight on our hands/handlebars and that core strength has weakened
in recent decades, making this a greater challenge.

The Specialized 40th Anniversary Allez frameset was nice, but very pricey
at $4000 for the frameset. It was designed by Mark DiNucci, but made by
Toyo, so good stuff. Only 74 were made.

Interesting, if you really want one, DiNucci still has the lugs, including
the cool x-wing chainstay bridge, so for a little more, you can have a
custom frameset build by Mark with these lugs.

I wonder if Mark Nobilette will make Riv's 25th Anniversary frameset?!

Good Luck!

Now, On-One is a company who has business strategy involves blatantly ripping
off company’s designs and undercuting them on price. See the “Geoff” handlebar
for example. Not really a company you want to be citing as a victim here. I’ve
never seen such a brazen ripoff and it really irks me. Even the name is
insulting to Jeff Jones.

I don’t think the Wavy bar is ground breaking or totally reductive. It is a
little narrow, IMO, for an trail-riding bar.

Riv *has* been selling a similar bend for years with the original Bullmoose. I
believe the Wavie Bar exists because they're introducing a trail bike with a
threadless steerer.

I am hoping the Wavie bars find their way to whatbars.com soon... Does
anyone know if they are already there but under a different name?

Yes, but it’s literally years after many similar bars we’re introduced. On
One had their Fleegle with a similar shape at least 10 years ago.

One of the criticisms of Rivendell/Grant that I see frequently is that they're
slow to respond to trends. Here, they've brought out a bar similar to a whole
host of others in a nice finish made by a great manufacturer and they get
criticized for that, too. Go figure.

This is my 1995 Road Prototype. It was originally all Light English Blue, a
Waterford classic color. Waterford made the bike for RBW using heavy wall
Reynolds 753 tubes, a 531 fork with a bi-plane crown and Richard Sachs designed
lugs. It was re-painted in 2011 at Airglow in Athens GA using the same light
blue but with cream lugs and fork crown to match the cream in the decals. It's
being re-painted now due to a frame crack repair, but with the same colors as
seen here. The frame measures 54.5 cm C-T on the seat tube, and I have always
ridden it as a 650B conversion.

[RBW] Re: Anyone use Alex Adventurer 2 rims?

2019-02-05 Thread ascpgh
I have an original Adventure, OEM on the Disc Trucker I use to commute. I
had a front wheel built for my generator front hub with a Velocity Synergy
(not a Cliffhanger) rim. The weight difference between the two was
impressive, despite the generator hub of the new one. The Alex Adventurer
is a heavy rim, and while it may have loose tolerances for roundness and
width at the joint, my commuter with disc brakes overlooks that flaw. I
carry about 25% less than you intend on my daily commute but weigh 20-25#
more than you depending on the weather and clothing necessary.

I've stuck to Velocity or Mavic rims for reasons made clear by Peter White
. Another ongoing thread
speaks to the value of roundness and flatness of rims before building a
wheel and many listers related the satisfaction of experience with a
finished wheel that had little deviation of roundness or spoke tension due
to the rim imperfections. I value builders' observations regarding rims'
quality. They also are pretty good at recommending them for use based on
rider weight, application, drilling, brake format and hub to be used.
Outlets of rims seldom have this degree of first person experience-based
information on their websites, comparatives being just the specs and price.

Use reports of rims seldom extoll virtues but rather criticisms revealed by
failure or damage since a wheel that stays true, round, facilitate keeping
the tubes/tires mounted and inflated are fairly discrete. I find it hard to
point to the attributes of a wheel in use that are due to the rim itself
except the brake web consistency over the joint. They do differ a lot in
how tires install, both in ease of getting between the bead hooks and ease
of seating for roundness while inflating.

What I can say about the Alex rim are really positive observations of
attributes of disc format brakes rather than the rim. Besides being heavy,
that wheel is out of round and seldom very precise in trueness. Can't
really say if much of that is from the machine build or the drudgery of
daily commuting through the seasons.

Thanks to everyone for their nice comments and encouragements. Watch in a
couple of weeks for my next project, the frame repair and repaint of my 1995
Riv Road Prototype. It came to me from this list in 2009 and I've put over 9K
miles on it since then. It developed a partial circumferential chainstay (non
drive side) crack. I sent a picture to GP who said it was very fixable, and he
was correct. I pick it up on 2/23.
