Patrick, apropos your enjoyment of fixed gear riding, I wonder if the

Re: [RBW] Fixed Gear Boots Puzzlement

2019-02-19 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Max! I suspect you are right. It makes sense that eccentric muscle motion
is part of my overall description of fixed gear as “feels like running (but
with input to both feet all the time)” and “ballanced motion” of it. Moreso, I
would think, with riding hills and trails, with loads of backpedal breaking.
Beyond my general Scottish thriftiness, that would explain my distinct
preverence for backpeddaling over handbrakes (which I only use as
supplimental). Fascinating thought! Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-19 Thread John Rinker
DRW,

While I'm a sucker for paper maps and atlases, I do find the Gaia app for
my iPhone (Android as well!) to be a very handy navigational tool. Without
having to purchase another device (and I'm sure there are some fine one's
out there!), the Gaia app costs $20 a year and you have access to all kinds
of maps. I use the app all along the great divide last summer and it
performed flawlessly. Gaia can be customized to show all kinds of
information (time, distance, elevation, pace, ascent, etc.) Another cool
feature is the ability to take a photo of a place and have it pinned on the
map at that location. Check it out.

Cheers, John

[RBW] Commuter oriented bike shop in LA?

I'm remotely helping a friend get back into commuting, he lives on the
near-east side of LA. He picked up a nice converted vintage MTB but needs
racks, bags and eventually some Riv-ish stuff.

I'm looking for a shop that understands the vintage Riv-inspired commuter
and who may eventually be able to set him up with a basket and some
Albatross bars.

Any recommendations?

Why use p-clamps? It looks like there are 2 holes (possibly threaded) in
the dropouts -- they're lower and farther back, would be more secure
mounting points, and would make the rack geometry better (less backward
tilting). I'm presuming the tilt is to try to avoid heel strike with

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-19 Thread Lynn Haas
I've used the onX app in the past and was able to download detailed maps
prior to my trip. It was a little fiddly to get set up, but worth it
because it shows land ownership boundaries (very nice in areas where people
really do shoot first and ask later) and as long as I had the correct maps
downloaded before I left, it worked exclusively on GPS.

onX has become more hunting-oriented over the years, so if you aren't down
with that, definitely go with another app.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-19 Thread KC
Good input Joe. I know you were steering me to the mid-drive and using it
on the Groove. I guess I still have too much to learn to place an order.
The people who we bought our house from had solved their problem with a
front hub and were happy with it as far as doing what they needed from it -
getting up the one big hill. I tested, by accident, a really nice e-bike a
couple years ago. I didn't like the feel of the pedal assist. It was fun
to see what the bike could do. I just want to put on a little power when I
really need it. I really liked that bike, but it was overkill for what I
need and way too much money.

I know you put a kit on a bike and then took it off to sell it. Must have
been a mid-drive, so maybe it's simpler than it looks to me. Doug P gave
me the name of someone that does mid-drives (they want to see the bike) and
I also spent quite a bit of time on the Luna website that I think you
referred me to. I've been wanting to load up the bikes and go talk to the
people at Luna so I guess it is time to do that. And then we can have a
nice day riding that bike trail. We've done it a couple of times with
friends that live a block away and we owe them a visit.

Then, I'll have to rethink the "not a 4th bike" idea and consider the Rad
folder that has also been recommended by someone on the list. Leah, you may
want to look into that one for your husband.

business with such a wonderful story.

Assuming you have a Gmail account, why not write a quick Google review for

a star rating will show up, which is great marketing. Businesses with only
one or two reviews can really benefit from a five star review, and Google

I havent really thought about budget, but if was something that lasts a
while, i would probably be willing to pay for it.

For the phone apps, you use them without wifi/internet, but you download
certain maps, is that correct? how much planning ahead does that take? or
i guess how much area do the maps cover? part of the reason i'm interested
in something like this is for the ability to, on a whim, see where weird
roads and trails go (and how high they go) without getting totally lost.

2019-02-19 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
iPhone apps ... you describe them well. Download for off line use. This isn’t
very difficult, but does take enough planning that you have the general area.
However, mobile signal is often available even in pretty remote areas at least
occationally. On ridges, above treeline, when the squirrels and wind
inexplicably align. Grin. I leave my phone in airplane mode (saves battery),
then connect once a day or so in a spot I guess will have signal. Phone memory
is generally not an issue, so, when in doubt, download all areas around where
you are going and you’ll have what you need.

In the case of Gaia, their premium membership is very attractive to me because
their maps are what I use wherever possible. If I don’t need to buy paper for
the whole route, that becomes very attractive.

With abandon,
Patrick

Mark-

I have only done 2 rides but my first one - - about a 40 miler - - did offer a
little off road terrain out by JFK including gravel, loose sand, railbed sized
rock. The tires performed great and felt real pillowy over it all. They also
rolled well on the road regardless of the little nubs which I was initially
skeptical of as I wanted the Atlantis set up for the road. Also lots of glass
on the road which I unsuccessfully tried to avoid and no flats! I have compass
tires on my ram and quickbeam and these didn't feel any less supple (likely due
to much bigger width and lower psi).

As for fenders I initially thought no problem but upon closer look you only
have about a quarter inch clearance at fork blades. I think it's a no go but
check with Will at Riv.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-19 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes, the front hub kit does work for some folks if you just want a little
throttle over a hill, it just isn't great on Rivs..they fit big, chunky steel
cruiser/rigid-mtb forks better.

Mid-drive is simple to install if you're familiar with it, but not as dead
simple as swapping wheels on a fork. Basically you gotta get that motor into
the BB shell (replacing cranks, front derailer and shifter), then plug it into
the harnesses to bar controls and battery.

The tough question is how much you'll actually ride without power. In my
experience the goal of only using assist on big hills quickly turns into the
realization that your bike is now significantly heavier and has some drag. It
ends up just making more sense to pedal in PAS 1 on the flats, which a
throttle-only hub won't do. What about always using a bit of throttle? I tried
that and it nearly cracked my wrist of..pedaling while holding down a thumb
switch was NOT fun.

Sorry if I'm offering more obstacles than solutions, but it's kinda my duty as
the eRiv guy to help people skip some of the (very expensive) learning curve I
was on. Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-19 Thread Wally Estrella
Just make sure your smart phone has a GPS chip and you should be OK. I use
Ride w/ GPS for my route creation. I had downloaded my route for a bike
trip last summer. This for an area known for having no cell coverage to
being very spotty at best in some areas. My phone had lost it's routing
after about 40 miles into a 60 mile ride out. It had worked great, in
airplane mode, up to that time. We made it out and back fine, but could see
getting into trouble easily in some areas.

[RBW] FS: Nitto rack / handlebars, Campagnolo 10-speed parts, DTSwiss wheel

2019-02-19 Thread Nathan Lee

Cleaning out the closet and would love to make some space by getting rid of
old bike parts.

*Campagnolo Centaur 10-speed (mostly) Group from 2009 - $200*

This is a well-loved used road group that should have some more life if
they receive a little bit of servicing and love. Included is:

   -

silver/alloy 10-speed ultrashift levers. Some scratches on the levers,
but no tears or rips in the hoods. Usable, but could probably use a
servicing. The ultrashift allows for up to 3 downshifted cogs, and 5
upshifted (the later 2010 models of 10-speed took out this functionality).
   -

Standard 10 speed crankset. 170mm. 53/39 rings. No bottom bracket.
   -

   Brakeset front and rear
   -

   Short cage derailleur
   -

Braze-on mount front derailleur with adaptor clamp (for a 28.6mm seat
   tube)

If desired, I could swap out the standard crankset for a compact Campagnolo
Centaur crankset from the same era. 172.5mm length, 50/34t chainrings.

*Nitto 33R Campee Rear Rack – $100*

Nitto rack that has been used but still very usable. No rust or dents.

*Nitto Noodle Handlebars. 40mm wide, 26.0 clamp – $35*

Used nitto noodles, eventually changed out my wife’s bike to flat bars.
Great classic bend drop bars with a slight 1cm backweep on the flats that
lets you get a more upright and comfortable riding position.

*ProVibe 7S Anatomic Bend Handlebars. 42mm wide, 31.8 clamp - $40*

Incredibly stiff and lightweight alloy handlebars. Thick top section makes
them really comfortable for riding on the flats. Great bars for getting low
and sprinting

*DTSwiss 350 wheelset / DTSwiss 1.2RR rims. 32h, 3x laced, campagnolo AND
shimano freehub body for 10 speed included – $180*

Great solid wheelset for riding. Could use servicing, but otherwise will
give you a good amount of riding and use. I have 2 freehub bodies for 10
speed cassettes (up to 11 speed for campagnolo) that will be included.

[RBW] NAHBS iBOB/Riv list Get-Together and Garage Sale, Sat 3/16

2019-02-19 Thread Jeremy Till
NAHBS is once again in my town this year (Sacramento) so I thought I'd host
a little get together for people on the iBOB and Rivendell Owner's Bunch
lists. Like Rob Perks did in 2016, I'm doing it as a morning coffee time on
Saturday morning, which is when I figure most people will be attending the
show. The details:

What: NAHBS iBOB/Riv list Coffee Get-Together and Garage Sale
When: Saturday, March 16 9-10:30 a.m.
Where: My garage and driveway, in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento,
1.8 miles from the Convention Center where NAHBS is being held. In the
interests of not posting my home address online, if you are interested in
coming, please RSVP to me and I will send you my address directly.

As the title says, in keeping with the Marie Kondo craze and the interest
of downsizing my parts collection, I'm hosting it at my place and will be
throwing a garage sale at the same time. Basically anything that's not
already on a complete bike will be up for grabs at what I hope are
"everything must go" prices. It's an eclectic collection but includes
various flared drop bars, a 7spd Nexus wheel/shifter, a few bags from Riv
and VO, Time ATAC pedals, some SKS fenders, etc.

I'll have a couple of boxes of hot coffee from local roasters Temple Coffee
and maybe some donuts and/or pastries as well. Feel free to bring some
treats to share, or if you want to show off your coffee outside setup feel
free to brew up on the driveway. If there's interest as things are winding
down, I can lead a "scenic route" ride of 45 mins - 1 hour starting from my
place and ending at the convention center for the show.

Hope to see you there!

Re: [RBW] Off Topic: Questions about MacBook Pro, external monitor, heat, and screen burn-in

2019-02-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Peter. Several possibly related matters:

I do more or less sophisticated word processing with multiple windows and
documents, and often have multiple search windows open in addition. Laptop
sits on hard desk surface with cables to power, peripherals. 2014 high-end
Macbook Pro, latest OS and Office 4K 42" gaming screen, old Laserjet, plug
in or blue tooth keyboard, and wireless mouse, with auto backup drive, in
case these details are useful.

1. My 2014 MacBook Pro has been shutting down more frequently -- 1,
possibly 2 times/week perhaps instead of never -- recently, mid-use, when I
have several windows open, usually multiple Google screens but sometimes
with multiple Word screens. I often -- not nec always -- hear the fan
running fast; and IIRC, this happens when the computer is asleep -- either
timed out or after I close the lid. No other problems with the computer
(well, except the occasional but separate/independent mid-use shutdown of
my big 4K external monitor).

2. From Google, some people say that running a MBPro with lid closed (I
often just use the big monitor) can cause the computer to heat up unduly;
and heat of course can make the laptop shut down.

3. I can simply keep the laptop lid open, but then others on Google talk of
screen burn in.

So, questions:

1. Shutdown: Heat, or some other culprit? I read of resetting the SMC but
from fan noise I wonder if it's a heating problem.

2. Will running the MacBook with lid closed cause it to heat up materially
more than with lid open?

3. Is the LED (I think that's the type) screen really susceptible to "burn
in"?

4. If so, is there a way to turn off laptop screen without turning off
external monitor? (I've looked and not found one.)

5. I have been keeping the MacBook running 24/7 on mains power, plugged in
to peripherals, just setting it to Sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. Is
this bad? Suggestions for better?

Many thanks for your help!

[RBW] Re: Ride Report, Brothers in CA

2019-02-19 Thread dougP
Glad you had such a wonderful trip. Now it sounds like you're hooked.
What you rode, while excellent, gives you a taste of the riding available
in that area. One of my all time favorite rides is Crescent City to San
Francisco. Takes roughly a week, depending on individual taste in pacing,
and features plenty of jaw dropping views. San Francisco to San Luis
Obispo via the Big Sur Coast is an extremely close second. Both of those
require some camping.

While you were in the bay area, did you get to RBWHQ in Walnut Creek?

I'm glad you had a good time out here and that the generally cooperative
weather actually cooperated last week. I was out of town but by all reports
Saturday was a sunny ol' SoCal beach day.

And yeah, I forgot to mention, "bike path" is something of a broad spectrum
catch-all around here. Everything and everyone uses it as they see fit, in
varying degrees and measures of speed, spatial awareness, and common
courtesy.

But hey, what's a day in LA without getting irate at the traffic?

[RBW] Model/Size Recommendations for PBH 82ish -- In between sizes

2019-02-19 Thread RDS
Need some sizing/model suggestions for those that fall in between sizes on
some models. Due to shorter arms & not great flexibility, I want to be on
the low end of sizing for a model versus the high end. Meaning less
seatpost showing vs more. PBH 82ish. Being overweight, I want to use 38+
wide tires (as a minimum) which might bump SO height up a little as the
tire gets more wide and tall. Living in Georgia, I do not have easy access
for testing sizes.

*Here's what I know due to past purchases:*

Clem 52 H - I am on the top end of sizing .. could it have worked? Yes,
but not optimal for me plus asthetically, too much seatpost and stem exposed
Clem 59 L - with seatpost slammed, on the extreme of getting seat height to
work -- slightly too tall
Sam 55 - Standover was uncomfortably too tall w/ zero room to spare and
that was with either 32mm or 38mm tires

*So, trying to narrow down which models that I might be at the lower end of
a size.*

So, Clem and Sam are out due to being on the high end of sizing for size
51/52. AHH, looks like I'm just slightly to small for size 54.5 which
would put me at high end of sizing on a 51. Atlantis, looks like I'd be at
the upper end of size 50 & not quite enough SO for 53.

Am I right that my two best choices would be *Cheviot 55* (at 300+ lbs I
may be too much weight for it) or *Appaloosa 51* as I might be in the
middle end of sizing vs high end
.
Anyone near my PBH, feel free to send pics off list to me showing how much
seat post is exposed & your PBH. I want to get the tallest size I can get
so that I have little seatpost and high bars. With me having short arms &
not being very flexible, I'll probably have to use a reach back style
handlebar.

[RBW] Model/Size Recommendations for PBH 82ish -- In between sizes

2019-02-19 Thread Drw
I don’t know that the difference between 52/59 Clem’s will be as drastic
between a 55/51 Sam. The Clem’s feel bigger to me and their differences
greater. Meaning I would maybe try the 51 Sam before you rule it out.

That said, I think a 51 Appaloosa would be great for you. Big tires, can handle
a load, awesome fork crown, not sidepull brakes...

[RBW] Model/Size Recommendations for PBH 82ish -- In between sizes

2019-02-19 Thread Joe Bernard
You're not going to like the seatpost/stem extension on a 51 Appa if it
bothered you on a 52 Clem.

I'm 80ish PBH, short arms and fit well on a 55 Cheviot. I think the fit should
work for you, but you're correct that it might be a little underbuilt (maybe
talk to Riv about it).

For a stout Riv with a tad more standover than your Sam, take a look at the 54
Hunqapillar on Ebay. It's a nice bike.
