What a crazy bike. The threadless fork with paint-matched top cap tells me this
frame went in for a repair or repaint and came out a heavily altered
Rambouillet with perfectly matched paint. Which is a dang hard thing to
accomplish with that color. I'd love to know the story.

As far as I know, the Ram was never offered with canti bosses. This bike
has what appears to be the original orange Ram paint and decals, so my
guess is that the owner arranged for the frame to be customized before
painting . . . whatever the case, it's an interesting bike.

What a humbling, wondrous surprise! I’m floored. Someone generously combined
their funds with our meager bit and out the blue I get an email informing me a
custom headbadge is in the works. Wow. There are several ahead of me, so there
is time for my daughters to work up a design based on loose bits I snagged from
the interwebs. We shall see what they all come up with! Doubtless a
celtic/viking motif will be involved.

In other, highly related news, Beorn is in traveling bear form wending his way
to Pikes Peak from Mt. Diablo, due to arrive (inasmuch as one can schedule a
bear), mid next week. Grin.

With abandon,

All I know is that I replaced the Clem Bosco bars with the Chocomoose from
Blue Lug and now it rides like a dream. Part of the problem is that I'm
heavy, and in start-stop traffic in NYC I would sometimes put a lot of
force on the bars and move them in the stem, regardless of how tight I had
the stem. That was my impetus to try a "moose" style stem/bar. Now I'm
hooked. I also got the Boscomoose from Riv, but I haven't even tried it yet

Re: [RBW] Grant’s Hillybike Concept Attempts to Restore Balance to the Speed of Humanity

2019-04-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I remember when 0-60 in six seconds was marketing buzz for Corvettes. About
5 years ago, one of the Camry 6-cyl models (this is America's favorite
family sedan) could do the same. I rented a Camry circa 2014, undoubtedly a
large 4-cyl because fleet, and it accelerated so fast that at first I
thought that the speed was calibrated in KPH.

My 1984 Passat wagon had a claimed 88 bhp; my 1996 Saturn SL2 about 120;
1990 Voyageur 140; my current PTC 150 (all figures claimed for cars when
new). I came close to getting myself in trouble with all of those.

I have to say though that after driving several fleet full-sizes with large
4s over Raton Pass to CO Springs, it is really amazing what they've done
with engines. Cruise at 90 with load, climb the Pass at 70-75 with engine
in 5th at 5-6K rpm, and still get 30+ mpg.

[RBW] Re: Gus, Susie, or Wolbis?

2019-04-05 Thread tc
I personally wish Grant would consider toning down the MTB (or what he
calls MMB) hate rhetoric a bit. He shouldn't have to disparage the MTB,
and those who like them, in order to prove the usefulness of the Gus, or
any 'hlllybike' he designs. Marketing is one thing, but bashing the MTB
(and therefore those who ride them) doesn't really come off well, as
written. He's painting with too wide a brush. It also implies that he
isn't aware of the singletrack environs that are vastly different from the
hilly paths of Mt. Diablo, where MTBs really shine. And I'm just talking
about a simple hard tail here. I don't ride a hard tail to show off, or to
take stupid risks, or to go faster than I can responsibly handle, or to
tear up mother nature just for fun. And I don't wear motocross clothing
when I ride my MTB ... usually gym shorts or warm up pants and a tshirt or
hoodie. The MTB is a better tool for the job for many environments because
it smooths things out a bit and also helps keep that tire on the ground.
Probably also important to say that, from what I've seen of where the Riv
crew rides, an MTB is overkill. Maybe he's reacting to those people ... so
maybe his focus should be on them, not all MTBs, not all MTB riders.

No kidding.  Back in the 1960s, the heyday of the American muscle car,

the 2020 750i BMW luxury sedan will do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, which used
to be regarded as supercar time.   A Mercedes wagon - not the AMG high

5.1 seconds.

[RBW] Front Rack For Big Wald Baskets

2019-04-05 Thread J Edward
Congrats on the new Atlantis! I’ll weigh in here and say if you like to tinker
and have access to some spare rack parts you might be able to make the Surly
rack work—the mounting hardware is extremely versatile. Surly doesn’t recommend
using their 8 and 24 pack racks on bikes without the proper braze ons, but I’ve
seen them set up attached to the fork crown brake hole before. If done right I
don’t see a problem there.

has/had a slightly longer grip section on the backswept portion vs the non

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Chocomoose bar

2019-04-05 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Well I just found this under the RBW Choco Moose listing:

" Assuming price is not the decider, how to pick:

If you’re putting it on a mountain bike or a bike for loaded touring, and
that bike isn’t too small for you, get the CHOCO-MOOSE. Why not? It’ll work
great.

For any roadish or touringish bike get the CHOCO-NORM.

Specs
CHOCO-MOOSE: CrMo, 2.25lb, effective extension 12cm, 54cm wide.
CHOCO-NORM: Heat-Treated 2014 Aluminum, 0.75lb, 54cm wide.

Not to indulge your obsession with weight, only to make apples-to-apples
easier: A CHOCO-NORM with a 12cm Tallux stem weighs 9.6oz less than a
CHOCO-MOOSE"

So it appears there might only be one version...

[RBW] Grant’s Hillybike Concept Attempts to Restore Balance to the Speed of Humanity

2019-04-05 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I found this fascinating, in light of Grant’s lamentations on the state of
trail riding bikes. The idea of “slowness rage” as another modern illness is
disconcerting, yet we’ve all experienced it, both in ourselves and in others.
http://nautil.us/issue/71/flow/why-your-brain-hates-slowpokes-rp

On my bike, I experienced it in myself though the constant metrics of a cycling
computer and riding to the metrics instead of to my enjoyment. Could I ride to
my enjoyment with a computer? Likely, but then I’d be constantly “not thinking
about the elephant,” and I’m not very good at that.

In drivers, I have largely eliminated it through the “smile and wave” approach,
but still experience it in drivers who pass unsafely. They go wide around me on
blind section of road when oncoming traffic can’t be seen, or worse, pass when
there is clearly oncoming traffic. Interestingly, between the “smile and wave”
and riding in the lane’s right tire track instead of hugging the right
shoulder, they almost always pass me with plenty of room, which of course would
be negated should they plow into oncoming traffic.

In other cyclists (because “people on bikes” doesn’t really change minds and
hearts, does it?) I experience it much the way it seems Grant does. The
technology promotes speed without thought or skill. Speed as an entitlement, a
right. And the accompanying superiority of the “club” who is fast because of
what they wear. This is hilarious to see directly confronted when I pass them
(as I do most cyclists if we’re going the same way) in their befuddlement at
my speed (generally while climbing) on “inferior” technology. These are the
riders who “rest their bikes” on the way up and bomb beyond their skill or
thought of others on the trail down because they “earned it.” The entire
approach of the hillybike, and Grant et al from the begenning, is counter to
this. It’s an uphill climb! Grin.

Look closely at the dimentions et al on the Blue Lug version. The Bullmoose is
narrower than Riv’s Bullmoose bar (66cm vs. 61?), which I found out the hard

[RBW] Orange Seal stayed liquid ~ 5 1/2 mos; didn't build up "skin" after ~15 mos

2019-04-05 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, in case it's useful: After a few months of procrastination, I girded
my loins with an Old Testament metaphor and opened up the front, tubeless
Big One on the Matthews, thinking that I would have to clean off a dried
"skin" after almost 15 months, and thinking that, after what turned out to
be almost 6 months, no liquid sealant would remain inside -- tho' I had
noticed with pleasure that I had not been getting thorn flats despite
carrying thorns around in the tread for miles.

1. Nope, no skin after 15 months since installing the Big Ones on 13 Jan
2018 and repeated infusions of Orange Seal Regular.

2. I ordinarily add 2 oz sealant every 3 mos, but turns out I had last
added it on Oct 20 2018, no more until today. Found at least1 oz and
probably closer to 2 fl oz remaining in front tire.

3. Was able, using Jan's instructions (more or less; pinch casing to work
beads onto shoulders), to get tire sufficiently seated that it held enough
air for the pressure to pop the beads back on the shoulders. I pumped it up
to (by thumb test) close to a super-hard 30 psi: Pow! Pow! Pow! There was a
bit of seepage around the bead that stopped after 10 min or so -- am
leaving tire off bike just in case have to clean further. No need for
compressor!

Note that the beads had stretched since initial installation; easy to get
one bead off rim; easy to get both back onto shoulders.

4. Damned mess stuff, sealant, dribbling all over the floor and the
workbench, and requiring elbow work to clean it off rim, tire, and spokes
-- liquid, and dried to various consistencies; hardest required steel wool.

5. Infused 1 fl oz from new bottle of Orange Seal Endurance; had been using
O S Regular. We'll see how this plays.

Altogether, chuffed that sealant lasted almost 6 mos, albeit in colder and
certainly wetter weather this winter; and even more so that it hadn't
formed a skin. When I removed a F Fred in 2018 after ~2 years, it had
gained 100-150 grams in weight from dried sealant; a lot for a 360 gram
tire.

Sealant in tubes: I've found Stan's boluses in tubes after 18-24 months,
but OS seems to remain liquid in tubes as long as it does in the bottle.

If that’s the case I’m way more excited about this project than I was when it

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus, Susie, or Wolbis?

2019-04-05 Thread Bill Lindsay
The drawing itself shows the rim diameter at 622mm and the tire diameter at
714mm. 714 - 622 = 92mm. 92/2 = 46mm. That's a 46mm tire wrapped around
a 700c rim.

I judged the lower slung top tube(s) because of how they encroach on the
water bottle in the drawing.

Re: [RBW] Re: Got my 61 Roadini set up!

2019-04-05 Thread Matt D
A 118mm bottom bracket instead of 119? Ah, I could never, the chainline has
to be perfect for when I'm climbing in the 52x11 - do you know what happens
when a chain snaps under that kind of power? But seriously though, 118mm
should work fine.

I'm not entirely wed to the noodles but they are quite comfortable as they
stand. I like being able to slide back and forth on the ramps and hoods to
adjust my uprightness. They had two Noodles (44 and 42, these are 44) as
well as those TRP levers at the co-op for awfully cheap, I've been quite
lucky in parts there for everything but quill stems. If I readjust and I'm
still whacking my forearms into the tops when I'm in the front of the drops
I could probably work with some flared drops or something like Soma's
Highway 1 or Brevet Randonneur bars.

Can anyone point me to a Nitto stem dealer with a generous return policy?
Hate to use Amazon but that could be the answer to finding the right one,
make a massive order of every size of Nitto stem they have and return all
the ones that don't work. It would be neat if there were a Zappos or Amazon
Closet-like service for dialing in the fit on a new bike, order a box of
stems and bars and just keep the ones that work.

I’m a little confused about the Susie and Wolbis. There are gonna be 2
additional Gus models that presumably have lighter tubing but look nearly
identical? Why 2 more? Is one of them the twin tube mixte? Seems like no, since
that one only goes to 46mm and the Gus goes to 2.8 or something.
What am I missing?

Re: [RBW] WTB: 61cm Roadini frameset

2019-04-05 Thread Matt D
Hey, I was just talking to someone about how many Rivendells we think there
are in Louisiana. He said he'd seen a Ram in NOLA - yours is green, right?
If so that makes at least you, Robert Bailey, and me.

Well, it seems like I'm the only one in the state holding on to my tall
Rivendell - Robert is also selling his 61cm 1997 LongLow, asking about
$2000 for the whole thing. I considered buying it but it definitely fits
smaller than a modern up-sloping-top-tube Rivendell, the Roadini fits me
perfectly but the LL's level top tube is a lot shorter and the standover
height is smaller, fits more like a 57-58 in my opinion. It's a very
well-appointed bike. Here's a post on the group from two years ago about it,

I test-rode it about two months ago and as far as I know he still hasn't
sold it.

I have Noodles on two bikes and think they are great bars. Mine are rotated
further up and the brake hoods sit higher. This creates a long flat section on
the top. The drops aren't parallel to the ground and I don't have forearm
contact when in the drops.

Try rotating the bars and raising the hoods. This will decrease reach and
increase comfort IMO

Matt, Congratulations on your new Riv! If I was buying a new one right
now, I would certainly go for the Roadini. I can't comment too much on
your stem issue, lots of folks on here are more expert. I would just say,
don't be necessarily wed to the Noodles. There are lots of drop bars out
there, with lots of variation in depth and reach. Maybe you could
experiment with some from the co-op. As for tape, I've always found that
blue tape looks just great with an orange bike, you can find plenty of pix
of that combination around, especially on the Riv sites. I certainly
understand building on a budget. Best of luck to you!

If that stem length works as currently set up, you can get an effective stem
length from it. Grab a tape measure and measure an imaginary straight line from
the center of the bolt in the steerer, across to the center of the handlebar

The interference between your arms and bars will decrease as the bars move
up and/or away from you, and vice-a-versa. You can also try changing the
angle of the bars, which look to be setup angled downward more than most,
including myself, use them. Check out the pictures of the Noodles on Riv's
product page, nice and flat on the ramps, angled in the drops. This
probably wont make the front of the drops more comfortable for you, but the
increased angle does make the drops position further back more natural in
my experience.

[RBW] Re: Got my 61 Roadini set up!

2019-04-05 Thread DarinM
Nice Roadini! You made the right call getting the bike you want from the
beginning.

Like Joe says, get a Shimano UN55 bottom bracket in 118mm, it will work
great.

Stem length, like any component that determines fit can take some work to
nail down. You're doing the smart thing to use an adjustable stem for this,
I am not brave enough to use one and thus have accumulated a range of stems
that I use to determine the right size. I'm a coward, I know. If an 11cm is
too long, I'd bump down to a 9cm. Based on you're saddle height, you're
probably pretty tall so you'll probably won't need a super shorty.

I don't match saddle and bar tape and I don't think you'll find that many
Riv riders do either (calling Bill L?). I think blue or grey would go great
with that orange. Don't worry too much, you might end up re-wrapping as you
dial in fit.
