[RBW] Roadeo/STI bars

2019-04-08 Thread Ryan M.
When I had my Roadeo is used the nitto “mark’s bars” that Riv used to sell.
They had a very comfortable drop and ramp area. Heck, I may still have them in
the garage now that I think about it. They would be my choice in bars for a
road bike.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo/STI bars

2019-04-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
I certainly agree:

IF you like Nitto Noodle handlebars on Bike A:
IF you are building Bike B with a similar Reach
IF Bike B has much longer brakelever hoods than Bike A
IF you ride a lot on the hoods and want to duplicate that reach

THEN you should compensate with a little shorter stem or with a handlebar
with shorter ramps. I went through exactly that calculus with my disc
gravel bike. TRP Hylex brakelevers are immensely long. I run a 9cm stem,
when I'd normally run a 10 or 10.5cm stem with normal sized brakelevers.

Hi Tom,

Sorry to write again, but I've also decided to get the Guu-Watanabe small
May under-saddle bag for $65, if that's still available.

So it's the tweed Lil' Loafer front bag, the Guu-Watanabe saddlebag, and
the Acorn medium saddlebag.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Wheel question

2019-04-08 Thread ted
No doubt the WI track hubs are well worth considering.
There are more discriminators between White and Phil than just preload
adjustment.
White probably lighter than Phil.
White mounts with hex bolts on the axels, you’ll want a peanut butter wrench in
your patch kit, and have to slide your rear hub out of the dropout lengthwise
(some folks find that an issue with fenders).
With Phil you can pack a generic long handle hex wrench and you have the option
to pull the hex head axel stubs and just drop the rear wheel.
The exquisite white freewheel (priced accordingly) should spin right on the
freewheel side of either brands flip flop hub.
The white rear hub will have their proprietary splined interface on the fixed
side instead of the standard threads with lh lock ring. Though the Phil uses
standard fixed threads they are cut a bit thick (?) and don’t work with some
plated cogs (e.g. euro Asia).
If you’ve no interest in fixed, Phil does fw only (either one sided or fw/fw
flip flop). I don’t know if White offers those options. They aren’t listed on
the web site, but neither are 135 old T11 rear hubs and I’ve got one of those
on my AHH. So maybe you could special order em.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo/STI bars

2019-04-08 Thread Kieran J
The main consideration for changing to STI shifting with the Noodles is
reach. The Noodles have a longer reach than most modern bars and some
modern shifters (Shimano notably) are quite 'long'.
If you ride on the hoods a lot and are used to using your Noodles with
smaller brake levers, the bigger brifters may feel a little unwieldy.

You can either put on a shorter stem or get a handle bar with shorter
ramps.

[RBW] I Visit God’s Roof Whilst We Get Ours Replaced

2019-04-08 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Paul. Aye, I use me iPhone for the amazing photos as well as the
mediocre ones. Grin. I use a Jobi GorillaPod, strap it on tree branches or
whatnot, set the timer and the number of shots it should take and then go ride
back and forth. Over the years the flesable joints have loosened a wee bit, so
beeswax helps stiffen them back up. I also keep meaning to add a velcro strap
to one of the legs to make strapping it to oddiments easier.
https://joby.com

They sure have a huge selection now, none of which existed when I got mine, so
I’d have to navigate it all to suss out which one is most like what I use.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Roadeo/STI bars

I've been planning on using Noodles on the Roadeo I've been building.
It'll be my first STI bike and I really like Noodles. But then I thought
a different bar might be in order. I've read through all the posts
discussing Noodle alternatives, but am wondering which of those
alternatives might have a leg up on the Noodle when used with STI levers
and a lower handlebar height. Maybe something with a shorter drop? Any
thoughts? I'm open to 26. or 31.8 or whatever. There are only two deal
breakers. One, it must be available in a width that measures approx. 46cm
at the hoods. Two, that it comes in silver.

I'd love whatever advice you could offer.

tom, can i buy this bag: Nigel Smythe Tweed SaddlebagBeautiful tweed fabric,
high quality leather trim. Tweed is backed with some king of lining that
renders it very water resistant and durable. Nigel Smythe was Rivendell's best
bag label before the current Sackville, and the tweed is gorgeous. This bag was
mounted but never used. Medium size. I believe it was about $195 new. Asking
$100 plus shipping. Note possible combo at a discount with matching tweed
handlebar bag, pictured next. mike goldmanrhode island

True, and I'm already there. I swapped that cockpit out and ended up with an
old 7-speed Suntour thumbie set to friction cuz that's what I had around. Turns
out it shifts better than the 9-speed in index so I'm good to go!

Re: [RBW] Re: I got a MIT Atlantis

2019-04-08 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Rust is a scab on steel. With high quality steel, you'd have to really
work at it to rust it out. This stem has been treated with Ospho, and that
neutralizes the rust. Sure, in 100 years, it might be an issue. But the
tubing is 2mm thick, it's not going anywhere any time soon. People ride
scratched steel frames with tubes that are .5mm thick, and they're
generally fine for years.

New iterations of the stem will be black cerakoted or clear cerakoted.
Working on that now. -james

[RBW] Re: Wheel question

2019-04-08 Thread James / Analog Cycles
I've built a number of quill rims up for Riv's. They're way stiffer
(that's a good thing) than A23 rims, more stable under high tension, and
generally ride and track better. Make sure you get machined sidewalls.
The polished finish is pricey but gorgeous. If you don't already have PW
hubs, consider the White Industries hubs, which have adjustable bearing
preload, so you can adjust for slop. Can't do that with Phil Hubs. White
hubs have a super high static load rating, which means they can take a
serious whooping. You don't need weird tools to adjust them. Plus their
freewheel is the best on the market.

Sapim Force spokes are beefy, decently light...

If you do Quill rims, you need tubeless tape, even if you run tubes.

Re: [RBW] PSA: Slick go-fast Rambouillet on Seattle CL

2019-04-08 Thread Sam Kling
I agree. With 35c tires, even super light ones like Compass, that seems
tough. Maybe that's without pedals or saddle? A common method to "game" the
weight downwards, although it's not too easy to ride without pedals and a
saddle.

I bet it's below 20 though, and maybe below 19. Campy Record carbon stuff
is lightweight, and those wheels must be really lightweight, what with the
lack of spokes and the Industry 9 hubs. Maybe he's running the tires
without tubes too.
