You're right, it's not.  And adding it to this discussion does a
disservice to everyone.  You should start a new discussion about Selle
an Atomica saddles.  That way, people interested in them will be able to
find your comments, and you won't run the risk of confusing people who
noting the subject line may think you're speaking about Berthoud saddles.

I’ve ridden brooks for years. They were all vaguely comfortable and
exceedingly durable. After reading the bikepacking.com reviews of the new
improved selle anatomica, I bit the bullet , hoping for better than decently
comfortable and lighter weight. What arrived was an incredibly loose saddle
that needed 10 + full turns of tensioning and still feels loose. An instruction
sheet that claims they have the longest rails in the business, oh but you can’t
use the full length of them or they might break..and A claim of high
durability, oh but make sure you get your butt off the saddle on every bump or
it might break. Also I ordered their heaviest duty model. How is this so hard
to get right?

Wow, it's wild how they sorted out getting "Shirmego" to work!

I'm frustrated that it seems a standard Shimano triple shifter probably
won't work with the Sugino XD2 crankset. So the options are:
(1) get a shimano crankset without the great low range of a the Sugino XD2
(2) Shirmego that allows the good trim adjustments of Campy and alternate
cable routing of the Campy brifters
(3) Or ... ??? any other suggestions? Any chance the Shimano brifters, like
the 105, would just work nicely with the Sugino XD2?

Thanks for the really helpful and thought out suggestions so far everyone!

And there is a significant difference between /formal standards/ (a
specification that has been approved by a standards setting
organization) and /de facto/ /standard/s (a specification (or protocol
or technology) that has achieved widespread use and acceptance – often
without being approved by any standards organization or receiving such
approval only after it already has achieved widespread use).  Garth is
clearly thinking of formal standards, and seems to be dismissing de
facto standards entirely -- when in fact much of what we consider to be
"standard" is actually a de facto rather than de jure formal standard.

Another option would be asymmetric shifting. Brifter for the rear, bar end
for the front. He'd have indexed for the cassette, which is where most of
the shifting happens anyway, and you'd get the trimming and compatibility
of friction up front.

I have Blackburns make of this. I can attest that the dangling straps are

However, I can strap in things that aren't a nalgene such as a rolled up

I like that idea Jonathan, but my friend says his knees hit the bar ends when
they’re in the extended back position (low gear for the front/left, high bear
on the rear/right).

As I write that it occurs to me that perhaps wider bars are a cheaper and
possibly better solution. But the friend is after brifters so I’ll still try to
sort it. Maybe just throwing a used pair of brifters on there and seeing if
they’ll work is the best I can do for now, but I’m still looking for a known
solution.

Great ideas everyone, please keep ‘em coming!

[RBW] Re: Rebuilding MKS Touring Pedals

2019-04-16 Thread Robert Liebermann
I find rebuilding MKS Sylvans to be one of their best 'features'. Since
they always come with too little grease it's a *pleasant ceremony to add
grease and adjust new Sylvans*, and it's pretty easy in my experience.

As for keeping the ball bearings herded, I hold the pedal with the
'bearings of interest' side up, and as I unscrew the cone I keep pressure
on the bottom ones. I can't remember if there's room for a wayward ball to
slip between the cone and spindle, but it's never been a problem. I loosen
the cone just enough to push globs of grease into the crank side, then
tighten the cone enough to flip pedal the other way up & put a glob of
grease into the outer bearings.

Tightening is pretty easy too, once you get a feel for how loose the cone
ought to be before tightening the locknut. I usually spin the spindle to
'tighten' the cone, then back off just the right amount, then tighten the
locknut.

Upon reassembly I get a nice smooth spin. The little bit of grease oozing
out from the crank end seal tells me that those pedals have been properly
greased and are ready to go.

MKS Sylvans are my favourite and are on most of my bikes. I just *wish
they'd stop 'fancifying' them by more polish and make the $#@! spindles out
of much stronger steel *(cro-mo?), because they bend *way *too easy!

As a bonus, here's some '*beausage*' photos of my well-worn Sylvans after 4
tours showing how satisfyingly they wear (note flattened centre areas):

Re: [RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

2019-04-16 Thread Joe Bernard
There's another way you can go that would solve all the issues: Microshift
Advent 1x for drops. It's relatively cheap, but you'll need the whole kit: Wide
range 9-speed cassette, right brifter and matching left lever, rear derailleur
(use current chain). Then you ditch the big and granny rings for the cranks and
maybe add a chainguard in the big position..Riv sells them.

So now your buddy has a full 9-speed brifter system with enough gears to ignore
front shifting altogether. Easy! I'm adding the flatbar version to my Atlantis
as soon as the parts arrive.

I got a Selle Anatomica saddle years ago when they were first released to
try, and it didn't really work for me (its sides were too wide for my fat
thighs). However, I was under the impression that these are unlike Brooks
or Berthoud saddles in that one *should* have the leather slung like a
hammock. Thus, the leather being a bit loose and droopy is expected. If
you've seen the original intro videos of the underside of the Selle
Anatomica saddle when it was ridden, the swaying/flexing leather top
clearly demonstrated this characteristic. Nevertheless, your butt shouldn't
contact the seatpost mast at all, and especially after tensioning. Have you
confirmed that you got the right saddle for your weight?

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

Just to add my experience, I have two berthoud aspins that I really like.
One is almost a year old and one is only about 3 months in. The year old
one is very very comfortable. I had a brooks b17 for about 8 years before
that and it was fine. Plenty comfortable but eventually i couldn't get the
tension where i wanted it.

Before I splurged for the second berthoud I tried a selle anatomica and it
took me one ride to figure out it wasn't for me. Not only is it way too
"soft", but the relatively flat shape caused the sharp edges to rub against
my legs. I also didn't care for the leather finishing.

VO Mojave has served me well though only with light use... fits a variety of
32oz insulated bottles though tolerances were different between kleen kanteen,
hydro flask, etc. so a few rattled much more than I’d have liked. I just
wrapped the narrowest bottles with extra cloth rim or handlebar tape, duct tape
or anything else I could find to shim and eliminate rattling. I believe some
bottles could be found with the same diameter but taller with even greater
capacity but I have no need for them right now.

40oz: 3.6" (should fit well on the downtube brazons)
64oz: 4.3" (Too big for the Downtube brazons, but may work with the strapon
mounts on the seattube.)

Ideas for tall bottles (preferably not plastic) that are more the 3.6" diameter
range? I'd like to be able to carry two-three 64oz ish sized bottles, and they
can but up to 12" tall or so.

With abandon,
Patrick

I'm running the Sugino 26/36/46 crank with a Sora FD3030 front derailleur

I think you'd miss that lower gear if you went to a double.

2019-04-16 Thread ted
DP,
I fear you may be looking for unobtainium.
I think all the 64oz containers out there are too large diameter for even
oversized bottle cages like the VO Mojave. Largest one I have used is the
hydroflask 40oz widemouth insulated bottle, which works great with the VO cage
on the seat tube of my 56 AHH.
For 64oz I think you’ll need the more general stuff holding strap stuff on sort
of “cages”
Have you considered water bags like the dromedary?

[RBW] Re: Big Bottle and Cage Recommendations

2019-04-16 Thread Tim Baldwin
I use the VO Mojave cage with a 40 oz. Kleen Kanteen on a daily basis.
Works great. Jandd stem bags also fit 40 oz bottles perfectly and have some
insulation. I've used the 64 oz. bottles with a King cage but only on
tours. The straps take too much fiddling for easy on/off. I liked the idea
of big 64 oz bottles but in practice I like the 40 oz ones much better. You
could put two by the stem, one on the down tube, one on seat tube and one
under the down tube. That's 200 oz of water! I'm thinking of doing
something along these lines for my next trip.

2019-04-16 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Ted and Drw. The clearance issue is from the cranks (I think they are
raising the brazons on the production run), not the cage (the Many Things cage
has no width issues). Drw, thank you for the offer. I'll stick with my Nitto
rear rack and panniers, and figure out what works with the many Things cage(s)

[RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-16 Thread Ash
Initially when I built up my first Rivendell 2 yrs ago I used Cantis. Went
through, I think, 4 pairs, out of curiosity how they differ - VO Zeste,
CR-710, Avid Shorty Ultimate and one other I can't remember.

I was most impressed with the Avid in terms of performance and design (I'm
not talking about the aesthetics). VO Zeste was quite good as well.
Somehow the Zeste opened wider (the brake shoes didn't hit the fork
blades), hence it was very convenient to remove wheels that had 2.00" tires
on.

Eventually I switched to v-brakes. This was NOT for performance reasons.
I have OCD tendencies. Found myself constantly fiddling with the brakes.
There's not much to tweak with in v-brakes.

I think cantis look cooler and the modulation they offer is actually
useful. I do not like the 'grabbiness' of v-brakes. One day I think I'll
go back to cantis.

The Mojave cage has a very long mounting rail with the bottom hole close to the

adding a narrow-wide/1x specific chainring yet, there have been no problems
using the Silver chainring. This being said I'll probably swap it to a
narrow wide chainring soon, maybe add a pop of color. do recommend

Stove is gone, Price drops/updates:

*Ortlieb Panniers - $80 shipped*
--I also learned from another lister that the red one is a front roller in
"Cordura Plus" fabric and the black one is a sport packer classic. I also
have a full set (4) of size 8 clips for these panniers.

*Pittock Travel Pouches AND Swift Industries Wanderlust Packer Glacier
Large - $40 shipped CONUS*

Wanderlust size large bag in Glacier color. I can take a pic if you'd like,
but it's brand new and same as this
one but in a bright
blue/white (they call it glacier) color. Take all three bags for $40.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! 50cm MIT Atlantis

2019-04-16 Thread REC (Roberta)
It is an awesome bike. My first ride on an Atlantis convinced me that a
Rivendell bike was in my future. I ended up with a Joe Appaloosa (less
expensive two years ago), which is nowadays, nearly the same bike. You're
right, it rides amazingly and I don't notice the bike weight either when
riding. Enjoy the ride!

Re: [RBW] Re: I got a MIT Atlantis

2019-04-16 Thread REC (Roberta)
Joe,

It's a great looking and great bike. I'm surprised how much I like the
black fenders--very understated. One of the first bikes I tested was
James's MUSA Atlantis and just LOVED it. It was the bike to convince me to
buy a Rivendell.

Enjoy for years! And, should you ever want to get rid of it, years down
the way, this is my size. :) I hope though that you'll retire with the
bike.

done before. I'll eat my hat if it's still there tomorrow night.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2000 58cm Atlantis $675 complete bike

2019-04-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
Those prices on the original invoice make me nostalgic. I can't explain
why they have two different line items for $65 bar-end shifters though.
$130 is high for two individual shifters. Maybe he got double charged and
it was a mistake or maybe he really bought a second set of shifters just
for fun.

2019-04-16 Thread Ash
Hiey Joe,

I've been enjoying following the evolution of your Atlantis. Keep those
pictures coming!

That loop bag is so perfect for nuts/candies/blueberries/snack bar/or any
stuff one keeps reaching for on a cruise.

I love the bag. I keep all the permanents - tools, patch kit, mini pump, tube -
in the front Trunksack and use the Jones bag for phone, wallet, readers, keys
and snacks. It's super handy, plus I love the bars.

[RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

2019-04-16 Thread Jim A
Aeropref mentions front derailleur FD-3030 which is the same series as
their shifters and is compatible. The Sora shifters you are writing about
are compatible with your rear derailleur but not with your front derailleur
(cable actuation ratio was changed).

[RBW] PSA: 2000 58cm Atlantis $675 complete bike

2019-04-16 Thread Ian A
If you ride it with upright bars, I'd imagine it could be a good fit for you.
I'd ride it at ~5'10" 84cm pbh with drop bars. You'd easily be able to sell
after riding it a while to see if it's a keeper for you.
