Do you have access to a mechanical shaker (i.e. for paint?) - I don't think
it would be easy to get a consistent tint throughout a can of shellac
without a thorough mixing.
If you're doing a small job, maybe you can borrow some or trade your clear
for amber. I would guess many people on this list have one or more cans of
shellac!

I can certainly attest to the street version of "as nimble, more stable" Riv
longbikes. My Atlantis - and previous Appa, Chev and Clems - feel just like any
earlier Riv (and current Roadini) in the steering/handling department; but
there's a notable cushy, staight-line, "freight train" vibe to the way it

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-17 Thread Steve Palincsar
The Aspin is more like the Team Pro than the B.17.  And it feels much
narrower between the thighs than a B.17 does.

On 4/17/19 10:23 PM, Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY wrote:

Thanks for the links Steve, found this-

"The answer is that the Berthoud has less suspended leather than the

The Brooks B-17 is 170mm from the outside of the leather to the
outside of the leather at the widest part of the saddle. The frame
support at that point is about 155mm outside-to-outside, and it looks
like there's about 140mm of "suspended leather" within that 155mm
width. The other 15mm or so of leather is in direct contact with the
metal support.

The Berthoud that I have is 155mm from the outside of the leather to
the outside of the leather at the widest part of the saddle. The
underlying plastic frame on the Berthoud is a little wider than the
metal frame on the Brooks, and it hugs the leather further in toward
the middle than the frame does on the Brooks. It's hard to tell just
how much would be suspended and how much would contact the underlying
support once you sit on a broken-in saddle, but my best guess is that
no more than about 115mm would be suspended. That's about what it is
now with the saddle new, so that's the most it will ever be. Based on
this it's pretty clear that the Berthoud will give you less than the
Brooks."

So percentage wise, the hammocked portion of a Berthoud is less than a
similarly sized Brooks. So Berthoud's widest, the Aubisque at 180mm
would be considerably narrower than Brooks' B68 at 205mm.

Bummer.
And Laing, thanks for the b68 acquisition tips! Recovering a sad and
neglected b68 is probably in my future. As for the Rivet Loveland, I
bought one last year and it was way too short, the nose was murder,
good width though (I'm 6'8" with what seems to be a recycled horse
pelvis). And if you would ever want to trade a ridable b68 for a
perfect condition Rivet, look no further!

Thanks all

Sounds like the 180mm Aubisque might be the closest Berthoud to the 175mm

narrower sweet sit spot than the b17, with the Aspin having a much skinnier
feel indeed. Thanks John

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen Beorn New Bike Day!

2019-04-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick, to clarify, Gus Boots Willsen is as nimble and more stable than the
Hunqapillar. And "as" nimble means the same tight turnie bits I can ride on the
Hunqabeam I can ride on GBW, but it requires a different line, both because of
the longer chain stays and the lower gears/freewheel. But saying that makes it
seem conscious thought is required, and that isn't the case, it just is nimble
differently. As some point I saw video of a tandem pair of MTB downhillers
tearing up a tight course. Their wheelbase was a wee bit longer, and they took
tight curves with aplumb.

Today was the inaugural ride with the wavy bars. They are pretty close to
equivalent to the out of stock indefinitely Bullmoose Bars and they are a
delight, as expected. Perfect for the riding I do.

With abandon,
Patrick

better; in fact, the Open, suitable trimmed, is my favorite after
(distantly after) a good drop bar. The Wavy looks almost identical.

I don't do hilly singletrack, but if I did, I'd seriously consider a Gus

Just looked: I don't see the Gus on the website: Is it a forthcoming model?

[RBW] Re: Big Bottle and Cage Recommendations

2019-04-17 Thread tuolumne bikes

If you want to use the Blackburn Outposts to carry bottles, consider adding
nylon tubing to the areas where the cages contact the bottles. It will
reduce (not eliminate) how badly the bottles get scarred. Slit the tubing
lengthwise and slide on.

Wide Jandd velcro ankle straps are perfect for replacing the straps to hold
the bottles. They will thread between the cage and frame or fork, are just
the right length for Nalgenes, and grip well. Because they hold their shape
well (don't sag), they are much less fiddly than the provided straps when
removing/inserting the bottles. They are also my favorite for securely
strapping jackets/pants onto stems or bag loops etc. They seem to always be
available for as seconds for $5.00 on their website.

Re: [RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-17 Thread DarinM
Will,

I always thought it was silly that these hangers have a total of three (3)
fasteners to hold it in place where none (0) are actually necessary. That
said, I have had a set of 720's with such mismatched springs that it was
necessary to actually use different tension holes on either brake post then
fine tune with the tension adjustment set screw. Maybe the idea is to cheap
out on springs and compensate with the ability to secure the hanger off
center?

I only had this problem once, otherwise I think they are great brakes and
cheap as heck.

The grubscrews to which you refer are on the straddle wire carrier,

Dear Steve,

Nope. They use a cast end on one side and a pinch clamp for the other.

A grub screw bearing directly on a stranded cable loaded in tension is also
described as the "death clamp", right? There are ways to fix it (brass
sleeve, for instance, a ball bearing may also work), but it is a
stupid/unsafe/inconvenient design out of the box.

[RBW] Re: FS -- Bike Bags, Riv and other

2019-04-17 Thread Tom Allingham
All: Everything is sold except the Green Tweed Nigel Smythe Lil' Loafer
trunk bag (which fits perfectly on a Mark's Rack or Nitto Mini-Front Rack),
the Black Acorn Tool Roll, and the custom blue and tan hand-tooled
saddlebag. I'll take $50 shipped for the Lil' Loafer, $40 shipped for the
Acorn, and $50 shipped for the custom all-leather saddlebag. Next up:
Another fairly long list of bags, mostly Gilles Berthoud. Thanks for all
the interest and patience. For all buyers, I have sent the packages out
today. Tom (Pudge)

[RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

2019-04-17 Thread Jack K
To reduce "knee jam on sharp turn" issues with bar-end shifters I always
trim off a shifter body's worth of handle bar end. For me that helps a lot
in keeping from getting poked by the shift lever. I've seen it written that
some bars narrow enough away from the tip that a bar-end shift will no
longer fit inside if an inch of two is lopped off, but I've trimmed quite a
few bars from various makers and never experienced that issue. Not saying
it doesn't happen, just that it hasn't happened to me.

BTW, although lots of folks do this sort of handlebar-ectomy with a hacksaw
with good results, I've always used a plumbing tubing cutter. The new cut,
after a bit of sandpapering, has always looked equally clean and precise as
the original manufacturer supplied end of the bar.

*As always, Rivendell staff are super helpful and well informed. *

*My take home from all this: it is possible to have a functional but not
great brifter setup with Sugino XD2 / XD600, but it's better to have all
Shimano road components to have smooth shifting. *

I've convinced my friend to adjust the handlebars (longer stem plus tild
bars up and away from his knees a bit). If 1,000 miles doesn't convince him
and his budget allows he can try swapping to brifters then.

*Thanks a million for all the helpful and detailed replies. *

[RBW] Re: new bike week

2019-04-17 Thread Ash
What Jonathan is saying so true about Bosco bars. At first, in theory, it
doesn't make sense. After using Albatross, Choco, Jones Loop, Surly Open
and a few more, I bought Bosco out of curiosity. Primarily because when I
went to pick up wheels from Rich's place I noticed he had Bosco on many of
his bikes.

Now I'm a convert. I had Bosco on the 51cm App I had. Used the same bar
on 50cm Atlantis. My latest is 46cm Appa. Also has Boscos. Heck, I have
even put the 52cm Boscos my road bike (which had real nice Campy brifter
cockpit) and love it. Maybe looks a bit comical. That's fine.

It did take a bit of trial and error with various stems before I went from
'like it' to 'love it'. Initially I had the 52cm Bosco on the Apps. For
my arm length and stuff 55cm felt noticeably more comfy. (Hence the 52cm
became spare and went on the road bike)

@John - Congratulations! Nice build. Appaloosa is a great bike. Keeper
for life! I'm a bit jealous because I haven't been able to fit fenders
with similar width tires I have. Btw, mine was the last available 46cm
Silver frame that I bought from Riv 2 months ago!

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! 50cm MIT Atlantis

2019-04-17 Thread Tim Baldwin
Roberta, after a few days I can certainly say this is the best feeling bike
I've ridden.

Kai, I may remove the skateboard rack as it won't fit my current 10" board
that I'm riding and have to strap it on the basket, which works fine too.
I've thought about going smaller again but the big board is a lot of fun.

Joe, I was planning on doing all black after seeing pics of yours but I
ended up mixing in some silver and now I'm liking the yin yang look of the
black/silver combo.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2000 58cm Atlantis $675 complete bike

2019-04-17 Thread Joe Bernard
Roberta rides bikes my size, I have a 53 MIT Atlantis and previously a 51
Appaloosa. I don't think she'd fit a 58cm of anything.

Actually, I did send you a PM (not sure what "DM" means) reply back on
April 4th or thereabouts, but evidently something didn't work right. Maybe
a spam filter got it or something. I'll try again. Look for an unusual
e-mail address.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2000 58cm Atlantis $675 complete bike

2019-04-17 Thread Ian A
For me, with my similar PBH,I'd consider it a correct fit. Depends on one's
height, but if you are close to 5'9" or thereabouts, it might well work out for
you. If you are shorter than that, I'd agree it's too big.

It would be a long drive to come home disappointed, but...

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2000 58cm Atlantis $675 complete bike

2019-04-17 Thread REC (Roberta)
The owner let me know it would be too tall for me (I gave him my maximum
S.O. and PBH). Last night, I put the bike carrier on my car, hoping to
drive up tonight to purchase it. Oh, well...

He didn't comment about it being shipped, but there's no harm in you (the
group "you") asking him (I'm assuming a "him.") It's quite a deal! I'm a
bit too far from the bike to me an intermediary, though.

John - great build and I love my Rivelo silver Joe. I go back and forth on
boscos and Chocos. Both great bars with the Joe.

[RBW] Re: new bike week

2019-04-17 Thread Jonathan K.
That Appaloosa looks so good! I saw it a few days ago on Utility Bicycle
Works's Instagram. It looks even better now that it's finished.

I admit, though, I'm biased. I also have an Appaloosa with Bosco bars. I
hope you update after you've used them for a while. When I first put them
on my bike, I almost immediately took them off, they felt so upright and
bizarre. After a while, though, they became my favorite. I've tried almost
every bar that Riv sells on my Appaloosa (Choco, Chocomoose, Albatross,
Billie, Bullmoose), and the Boscos are the ones that are staying. I really
want to hear how you like them on a longer tour. I ride my Appaloosa a lot,
but mainly for commuting. I haven't done any really long rides on it. (The
longest ride on that bike was about 30-40 miles and the Boscos were great.)

How's the fender clearance with those 2.1" tires? I think your pictures
just convinced me to try some Antelope Hills on my Joe.
