Front is currently 34t, which the big rear cog has now rendered rather silly
for road riding. I'm going to try a 36.

[RBW] In praise of Silver Shifters

2019-04-26 Thread John H.
I have used indexed shifters my entire adult life. To be honest, I never really
had any issues and I never really found any of my bikes particularly difficult
to set up and adjust. That said, for some reason when I went to spec out
shifters for my new Sam Hillborne, I decided to try out Rivendell’s Silver
Shifters mounted on the bar ends of my Albastache bars.

What a great decision that was. I can’t believe how
much more *enjoyable* they make shifting. I have them set up with a 9 speed
Connex chain and a 11-32 cassette that I got from Rivendell and after a little
getting used to I feel I can shift nearly as accurately and efficiently as I
could with lower range Camagnolo ergo levers (which were wonderful, by the
way).

If you’ve never tried friction shifting and are curious, I’d definitely
recommend picking up a set of Silver’s and giving it a shot.

[RBW] Re: What is the difference between the Betty Foy and Cheviot?

2019-04-26 Thread Drw
I agree. I’ve had a bunch of bikes since I’ve been conscious of chainstay
length and I don’t think I could attribute a certain feeling directly to that
part of a frame with all the other variables. Maybe a super short chainstay
compared to a Clem or something. We’ve had 2 sams, a new and old Atlantis, a
Clem and a mountain mixte (along with a bunch of vintage bikes) Can’t say that
chainstay length ever popped in my mind as a pro or con on any of those bikes.
Some had pros and some had cons, but chainstay length wasn’t in the top 10
variables.

My wife has a Betty and my daughter a Chevy. If they weren't painted

[RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
Eric, you certainly have gotten a lot of advice and all I can offer is a
single data point. First, I will second Steve's observation that the Rene
Herse equipment is generally made for an integrated bike system, so it
often doesn't lend itself to a retrofit. Second, different brakes work
better or worse with different levers. Make sure the lever & brake pull
are well matched. I have Shimano, Di Compe, Tecktro and Paul's Neo retros.
The first two offered only mediocre power, although the Shimanos worked
better with Tectro levers than with Ultegra. I found the Teckro very
fussy. The Paul's offer three great advantages that make them worth the
money to me. First they offer both excellent stoping and modulation.
Second, they are the easiest to adjust, although I did have a learning
curve with this until the process jelled in my brain. Finally, they are a
lifetime brake. They will last as long as your steel frame. Maybe even
longer. All of the parts are readily available at a reasonable price. I
originally had Paul's racers on our tandem and have been very happy that I
converted to the Neo-Retros for the added tire clearance. We run 45s on
that bike now.

If anyone missed the sales page and photos for the small and XL Gus Boots
demos, the webcache of the pages is still good. If the link doesn't work
just google search : *rivbike gus boots .* The small and XL links show
up, click on the little upside down triangle and choose the cached page.
There's a couple of ways you can see the full photos rather than the zoomed
in box, with Firefox one is to save the "web page complete" and open the
saved folder and the photos. The other is right click and choose "view page
info", under "media" all the 1600x photos are listed, copy and paste the
links.

[RBW] FS or FT: Soma Supple Vitesse EX 700 x 48 Tires

2019-04-26 Thread Adam in Indiana
Cross post from the iBob list...

Got a pair of low-mileage 700 x 48 Supple Vitesse tires that just didn't work
out for me. They have maybe 100 miles, perhaps a bit less.

I tried them on two different bikes (both could barely fit them), and just
didn't care for the handling and/or the millimeters of clearance I had left
over. On H+Son TB14 rims, they each measured right at 47.5 mm.

FYI, one of the frames was the latest canti-Sam; they just cleared by 2-3mm at
the brake bridge.

Anyways, asking $55 plus shipping for both, but would prefer a pair of
Compass/Rene Herse tires for trade, either 35 or 38mm width, as long as they
have some good life left in them.

Thanks!
