big apples might be worth a try. haven’t dealt with goatheads/puncturevine, but
they seem even worse than our greenbriar. I can change a tire fine, just don’t
want to be doing it every week, especially on winter rides through the forests

I have this same question, Roberta. Does anyone know when the next batch of
Clementines come to Rivendell? They really are beloved and they do sell.

Ryan is poking fun at me for Clem hoarding but it’s much worse than he thinks.
I started out with a Betty Foy and over time, I wore my family members down and
we are overrun with Clems! Here’s the line up:
Husband: Clem H
Son: Clem H
Sister: Clem L
Brother in law: Clem L
Mother in law: Clementine (it’s mine, now)
Me: Clem L

*Also, my Mom has a 2019 Cheviot. Why not a Clem, you ask? Because it didn’t
come in “sea foam.” But that Cheviot did.🙄

Re: [RBW] briar tires

2019-11-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I've used only 1 extralight model, but from my experience with thorns, I'd
bet $15 that they won't protect sufficiently for your tastes against
goatheads. Pre-Stan's and Orange Seal, I used Kojaks (35 labeled/32 actual)
on a couple of my road bikes; the puncture belt sufficed to keep goathead
punctures down to about 1 every 30 miles, which I considered to be the
preferable commuting and errand choice to riding dog tires; I went through
most of a yearly purchase of 200 Remas a year, though of course this use
included other bikes with other tires, some of which were 23 mm wide racing
tires and got slightly fewer miles per flat than the Kojaks but not hugely
so; and 60 mm Big Apples, which had a really effective puncture belt, and
which would be punctured by goatheads much less frequently, tho' they
weren't flat free -- but the BAs weigh literally 2X what my current fat
tires weigh.

The only systems I've found to be almost 100% proof against thorns are:
Modern Stan's and Orange Seal, used with as light a tire as you like (175
gram 559 X 28s; 450 gram 722 X 60s) -- tubeless for lower pressures, tubed
with sufficient road-like pressures -- tubeless works somewhat better; or
the pre-sealant standard around here, which was a heavy, heavy, belted tire
with thorn proof tube (2 lb in 700C C 50 size, no kidding, but you can get
them for 25s-28s) + tire liner + Slime. Result = bow wow.

The local roadies used to cut the beads off a used racing tire and use
*that* as a liner between tube and new tire; gain, too woofy for me.

II haven't used Big Apples for years, but they do reduce your puncture
repair to I'd guess about 1 about every 100 miles, this on pavement where
the hard surface seems to push the thorn through the casing. On dirt, I've
very often come out with literally dozens of thorns in front and rear
tread, brushed them off, and ridden away without air loss. 60 mm, 15 to 20
psi, normal tube, no sealant.

Hi Lee,

Sounds like you'd come down St. Helena / Spring Mtn road out of the
mountains heading into St. Helena. I would probably opt for White Cottage /
Ink Grade instead of Howell Mtn Rd, as there's less traffic, for sure. Old
Howell Mountain Road is the best climb up from Silverado. However, they've
blocked it off at the top where it hits Howell Mountain Road so you would
probably need to throw it over the barrier when you hit the top
Anybody else ridden Old Howell Mountain Rd recently?

If you are there another time (maybe w/o camping gear) I definitely suggest
Mt Veeder and Dry Creek roads. Super low traffic; I'm usually out there by
myself!

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Opinions on some Napa routes?

2019-11-11 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Tour of the Napa Valley stitches together most of these roads:

https://ridewithgps.com/trips/17036705
(not my GPS track)

You can cut out some distance and climbing by turning left at mile 44.5 onto
Chiles Pope Valley Road and heading straight for Pope Valley.

Another suggested change: Go through downtown St Helena and stop at the Model
Bakery. Lots of yummy baked goods, sandwiches, etc., there—but no restrooms.
Or, at the southern end of St Helena is Gott’s (formerly Taylor’s Refresher),
which offers gourmet fast food and long lines.

Most of Angwin is closed on Saturdays. There’s a gas station there that might
be open, but if you’re low on water, just coast downhill to St Helena.

[RBW] Re: Opinions on some Napa routes?

2019-11-11 Thread Rick Thompson
I did a route like that about this time last year. Most of Howell Mtn was,
and I think still is, closed to cars so that's great. Angwin stores are
closed on Saturday (Adventists, I think), but Pope Valley Market at the
bottom of Howell Mtn has cold drinks. Chiles Pope Valley is nice, not much
traffic until around the lake but even that's not bad. Silverado Trail is
busy with wine-sotted drivers, but the shoulders are wide. Goathead thorns
are dry and sharp and everywhere, I ran out of tubes fixing flats.

2019-11-11 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Yes, Garth! These photos were so helpful; I knew I wasn’t imagining this. I
thought I noticed it in the photo the seller had on Craigslist - I remember
thinking that bike looked looonnnggg.

I’m telling you, this Clem is a DIFFERENT BIKE. And you know what else? My
sister had been riding (ok stealing) her husband’s 59 Clem L in grilver, and
though it was too big, she got used to it. When her 52 Clem L came (in bronzy
green Sept 2019) I figured she’d fall in love and declare it the best bike
ever. But every time I asked she’d give me a non-enthusiastic answer and say
she missed her husband’s bike. I wonder if the geometry changes to her new bike
are why she’s been so lukewarm.

I use a s-84 27.2 lugged post on my 29.8 Clem no problem! I used a shim which I
filed to fit the contours of the seat lug. Never slipped, and looked even

I suspect "modern standards" would be just as bewildering to me as Riv

years and have never had trouble finding all the new and used ones I needed.
For big fun try getting into folding bikes and figuring out THOSE sizes!

Re: [RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
Fair enough, it's only freaky and inconsistent by modern standards I
suppose. That bit about the tubeset diameters makes a lot of sense, thanks.
Anyone have a list of what tube specs have been used and when? That would
be interesting to see.

It's way easy to find 27.2 as that's the most common current road standard.
It's not hard to find 26.8 per se, there just isn't much variety. Not that
you can't be happy with a Nitto post for the rest of your life, of course,
but that lugged one is neat and 27.2 only.

Eric, Velo Orange had Kalloy make them 300mm long one-bolt posts in a range
of weird sizes for $25 a pop. 25.0/4, 26.2/4/8, 27.0/2. Fantastic resource
for older bikes.

[RBW] long shot: looking to test ride a 60cm Cheviot in the DC area

2019-11-11 Thread Dorothy C
I am an 81 pbh, and I have a 55 Cheviot. Earlier this year my wife and took a
ride with Grant with a Hubbuh Hubbuh and his 60cm Cheviot. I got scared on the
back of the tandem, and tried to ride to 60cm Cheviot. I couldn’t get my behind
on the saddle - between the height of the seatpost lug and the curve of the
seatpost itself, the saddle wouldn’t go down to a ridable height for me.
Worth noting too, is the Cheviot is a long bike - a couple inches more and it
would probably not fit on our Thule rack. I am fine on the 55 Cheviot - I have
Choconorm bars on it.

[RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
Freaky and inconsistent is a little much.

28.6mm is the outside diameter of a normal seat tube. 0.7mm wall thickness
yields a 27.2mm seatpost. 0.9mm wall thickness yields a 26.8mm seatpost. The
thinking is spec tubing that is stout enough for the application and the
seatpost diameter is a result.

If Grant wanted to take the easy way, use off the shelf tubing for all bikes
and do what everybody else did, then all Rivendells would be 27.2mm. For the
Silver tube sets that he decided to have made, he decided to spec a little bit
thicker wall thickness for a little bit more stoutness.

It’s totally easy to find 27.2mm seatposts. It’s totally easy to find 26.8mm
seatposts. If you are having a hard time finding the right size, let us know
and we’ll help you find one.

2019-11-11 Thread Tom Horton
I have thought about tubeless and haven t convinced myself it s worth new rims
and needing to remember to renew sealant occasionally It s flat down here on
the delmarva peninsula and few rocks—we were basically ocean bottom not that
long ago— so traction and pinch flats not biggies.

But if i do go that route i think gravel kings perfect i have some in lesser
width on my quickbeam with tubes

Wonder how thorn proof those new endurance plus casings from compass/herse are?
I sure like their standard tires on pavement

RE: [RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Laing Conley
Seat post size is the inner diameter of top of the seat tube (usually single
butted - thin part at the top) - change the tube = change the seat post. When
the Sam got 0.2 thicker tubes (same outer diameter = same lugs), the seat post
got smaller -> 27.2 minus 2 x 0.2 = 26.8.

I believe it's a matter of what seatlug is used for a particular model. 27.2
was on the MUSA frames, 29.8 was the socket-style lug originally used on all
Clems and now only the big ones, 26.8 is the lug currently used on the smaller
Clems and all MIT fully-lugged bikes.

Re: [RBW] briar tires

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
Why isn't tubeless an option? Haven't got an appropriate wheelset, no
budget for it, just don't like the idea?

I'm not a huge fan of tubeless for most purposes but that's a use case for
which I would certainly consider it. The reason it's so popular in MTB is
that you can run lower pressures for more comfort and better traction
without the danger of a pinch flat. It's also popular with people riding
super-supple tires like Compass/Rene Herse on road and gravel because you
can run thinner casings if you don't have to worry about a ride-ending
series of flats from small things like thorns.

Your use case is somewhere in between, you're riding trails but you aren't
riding hard enough to risk PF'ing on a rock garden so the reason you're
doing it is more similar to that of the Bicycle Quarterly adherent. Tires
with tons of belts and protection don't feel very good and don't conform
around obstacles as well, meaning that you have less traction offroad. You
can probably get the same flat protection without tubeless but you'll cost
yourself ride quality. In your situation I would use a 48mm Gravelking SK
set up tubeless on Velocity Cliffhanger or VO Voyager rims.

[RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
So what's the deal with Grant's thinking on seatposts? There are a lot of
Rivs that come with the 26.8mm seatpost standard. Roadini, Sam H., and the
lower two sizes of the Clem come with 26.8 and I believe all the others are
made for 27.2 or 29.8 in the case of the Hubbuhubbuh and 59cm Clem.

So, my questions...

Considering how hard they are to come by outside of the stock Kalloy
seatposts Rivendell ships with frames, "Dajia Cycleworks" (really just a
Velo Orange house brand), and Nitto stuff, why use it at all? Does the
0.4mm jump really impart much of a benefit to ride quality? If it does and
you're already willing to forego wide compatibility why not go straight to
26.0? When 26.8 isn't used, why isn't it used? Why jump straight to 29.8
for the largest Clem? If a 59cm Clem needs such a beefy seatpost shouldn't
the 57 and 61 Roadinis get one too, or are they not offroady enough? Why do
tall Clems have to use a seatpost in a size Rivendell doesn't even sell? Do
the Roadeo and Homer use 27.2 so people can use more conventional
with-the-times parts on it and if so, why not others too?

I've always been baffled by this so if anyone with inside knowledge can
explain this to me I'd love to hear why.

So, if you can’t get your hands on a 60 to try, my story may help.

If I remember right (I’m about 95% sure), MY PBH is 83. I rode Grant’s 60 cm
Cheviot last April and when I jumped off it I got more acquainted with that
tube than I wanted to. I did not expect THAT on a mixte frame. I remember
thinking 55 was the only way to go for me.

I'd like to get a 60cm for several reasons (such as...me being able to ride

with the saddle jammed all the way down.

if anyone in the DC area has a 60cm Cheviot, I'd love to meet up and take

[RBW] Opinions on some Napa routes?

Hey RBWers, hope you are all enjoying a good fall!

I'm thinking about doing the following ride this Saturday morning and
wanted to get your thoughts on how difficult, how much time, relative
safety and traffic conditions, etc. Note, I'll be traveling with a camping
load on the bike.

I'd appreciate any input you may have on:

1. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park to Pope Valley via either Howell Mountain
Rd or White Cottage Rd + Ink Grade

2. Chiles and Pope Valley Rd to Lake Hennessey

3. Lake Hennessy down to Yountsville, likely via the Silverado Trail

[RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Clems

2019-11-11 Thread REC (Roberta)
Leah,

I cannot believe how BEAUTIFUL that color is. So rich and the Riv website
does not do it justice. I noticed that when I saw the Cheviot in person
last week. For those looking at the Chev, Rivendell told me that the Chev
and this Clem are the same color in blue.

I also like the svelteness of this bike, compared to the original Clem.
When I shopped originally for my first (and, I thought, "only" Riv), I had
rejected the Clem because of the weight and heft. However, this will be on
my potential retirement bike and I'm looking forward to test riding it. :)

Now that it's not in the triple digit temperature, you'll be able to ride
nearly every day until summer. ENJOY You'll have to get another
matching shirt for when it warms up! :)

I'm currently using the skewers with my new wheelset, but if a buyer really

2019-11-11 Thread Jay Lonner
It's so funny that you wrote that - I just returned from scrounging through
my parts bin looking for a pair of these myself for an upcoming build.
Luckily I have a brand-new set, which doesn't help you, but does make me
wonder whether Paul's decision to stop making these contributed to the
development of the Silver shifter Mk II. I have a set of the IRDs on
another bike and they just aren't as good as the OG Silver/Sprint.

If I hadn't found these I would have been very tempted to go off in a
different direction and buy a Rohloff hub or something. So 5 minutes of
scrounging just saved me $1,200+! Not a bad morning's work...

Honestly, stuff like this creates a real tension between my desire to go
all Marie Kondo on my parts stash and take back my garage vs. the knowledge
that parts that I really like and depend on could go away at any time,
reinforcing my hoarding impulses.

Good luck in your search!

[RBW] FS: 700c wheelset with XTR M900 hubs

2019-11-11 Thread Joey Robinson
Posted this over on ibob already, but I thought the people here might be
interested in these wheels/hubs as well.

For sale is a 700c wheelset with old XTR hubs and unknown rims. Hubs are
HB-M900 and FH-M900, I believe from 1992. Bearings are in great shape.
Spacing is 100/135 QR. The rims are fairly worn down (see photo) so if you
just want to buy this for the hubs, let me know and I'll unlace them and
save a boatload on shipping. $100.

Buyer will need to pay shipping from 30318. Price is negotiable so make me
an offer if you think I'm asking too much.

Pictures are here:

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Clems

2019-11-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Leah may need to get her tape measure out again. I'm thinking the longer
toptube and chainstays are the result of the seattube getting slacked back a
bit..I'll bet the bike itself isn't actually longer.

[RBW] WTB: Paul thumbie w/ Silver Shifter and adaptor

2019-11-11 Thread Michael Morrissey
Hi,

I want to buy a Paul Thumbie with the Silver Shifter. Paul used to make an
adaptor to use them, but it's discontinued. I want to run a friction
shifter on my 9 speed Rivendell.

Anyone holding and not using?? I just want the one shifter and mount.

Thank you!

Michael

[RBW] Re: It's getting to be that time of year again: Time to order stuff from Rivendell

2019-11-11 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
Good reminder. Thanks Bill. It's also that time of the year to order merino
baselayers. Might as well order them from Riv!

Re: [RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Clems

2019-11-11 Thread masmojo
Leah, I had to chuckle at the account of your new purchase.
When I got my Clementine I worried that subsequent interations, would retain
the bits I liked & the parts I didn't like would be put straight.
Well, the long chain stays don't thrill me & I didn't think they would go away,
but I didn't think for 1 second that they would be getting LONGER!!??

Guess, I should keep hold of my Clementine (not that I was planning to part
with it), sounds like they could become much sought after in the future for
their "short" chainstays.
😂
